More often than not I've seen many of these people get rehired....then get transferred. Interestingly I learned something recently about Scorecard that validated your point---it did reward those who got paid the least with more hours. Those that got paid more were either promoted or transferred. Most of the employees I spoke to who were either promoted or transferred were ok with the idea of being transferred, but about half were happy about being promoted (to salary management).
As for the manager who kept the deli fryer open for herself---did that manager get coached? If she didn't I would have brought this up to Global Ethics. Directly.
Walmart does have some very good stores. Some of them are extremely profitable--mainly due to excellent leadership and experienced associates. The last store I was at had great leadership, but inexperienced associates. Couldn't pull a profit there due to lack of understanding behind IMS or customer demand. Of course the biggest problem surrounding that store was the customers.....nearly 40% were unemployed and living off some sort of assistance from the government. And theft was (and still is) a colossal issue there. And mind you it's a Neighborhood Market. And not it didn't have an AP associate. It didn't make enough money to hire one (till corporate greenlighted it after the last dismal store inventory).
Don't get me wrong, the associates are (mostly) good people. Just inexperienced. Some were illiterate. A few never finished school beyond 6th grade. Yes it's that bad.
As for the power aisles---yes I remember that very well. Then about 8 years ago in an effort to stimulate sales, vendors and suppliers came up with the idea of dropping PDQ's in the middle of the action alleys. The results were customer complaints, dirtier floors and crowded action alleyways. Sales improved, but profitability didn't. And you're right impulse sales in Department 82 plummeted.
Wal-Mart became a very different company soon after Sam passed away. Many of the old-timers I speak to recount the "good ol' days" when hard working associates were rewarded with large raises. Now they're rewarded with keeping a job. And maybe a 50 cent annual raise.
I could go on and on about pricing, vendor relations (it's getting worse) and the long standing abysmal issue of customer service......but I'll instead conclude with a silver lining---this company has the purchasing parity of a medium sized 2nd world nation. It will remain viable for many years to come. And despite the concerns I've provided here on this board--this company has, for the most part, treated me and my family very well.

Yes they are. Ditto for CVS and Walgreens---which are eating Walmart's pharmacy sales alive. Which is one of the chief reasons why Bentonville decided to open up small format stores in the countryside (Walmart Express stores). They're about 11,000 sq ft in size and are designed to compete mainly with dollar stores.
What bugs me the most about Walmart's stock is we should have split by now. It hasn't. Then again some of my buddies have said the same thing about Costco's stock. Equally worrisome is the relative stagnation surrounding WMT's stock price. It's not just stagnant sales, it's also the way WMT opens new stores. Not that it's a new concept...but defraying costs to profit centers does nothing to help sales (despite brand new Neighborhood Markets doing much better than the average Supercenter). And I won't begin to tell you how this company opens new stores, or remodels them. I've never seen so much incompetence per square foot in my entire life.
Profitability is another story all together---but the grocery business has always been a "pennies on the dollar" sort of business. General Merchandise is suffering---primarily because Lowe's and Home Depot has been bleeding customers from Walmart.
Walmart has to adapt, therefore the reasoning behind opening Walmart Express stores. Eventually Bentonville will not open up anymore Supercenters---ushering the end bix box outlets. And that day may come much sooner than many think....

FYI...They are slowly moving away from using self checkouts. Furthermore, there are associates who are double "jobcoded" for both stocking and cashiering. Supercenters have at least 5-6 associates who are at least dual jobcoded. Neighborhood markets have at least 1. You also cannot buy cigarettes after 10pm. At least in the state of Texas you can't.

I respect your opinion. However I must disagree. The real problem, ironically, is teaching and training management what the policy states--so they can teach and train their associates. And it's a broad policy, mind you---so it shouldn't take a long time to get them to understand what the policy is. As far as calling customer support, I would like to add that customer service is--despite popular opinion--taken VERY seriously at Wal-Mart. Store Managers have been known to get fired over poor customer service.

When it comes to the topic of schedules, the Scorecard shows the following:
1. Unassigned shifts
2. Uncovered shifts
3. Sales versus wages
4. Front end coverage (cashier coverage)
Information is shown to store level managers in order for them to write schedules for hourly associates. Which is, in turn, written via a very different operating system.

No, but given enough time and notice, management CAN influence how many hours can be allocated to associates based on anticipated events (such as on-site concerts, etc). As far as last minute sales pushes (such as anticipated weather events, etc), no store can be able to adjust that quickly. They simply have to resort to shifting resources around (some stores are cross-training stockers as cashiers. And vice-versa).

It's not out of people. It's the way some managers write their schedules. Competent managers will find the correct coverage during peak shopping times, and hire accordingly. Declining same-store sales have a way of putting pressure on managers to cut hours. But me thinks it has something to do with store managers not fully understanding the term "sales forecasting"....

Schedules aren't written via Scorecard. Data from the Scorecard can dictate how hours are allocated, on the other hand. Accurate sales forecasting is key.

Not necessarily accurate. Stores do take into consideration such variables. What becomes a major challenge is predicting weather events. But then again who can accurately predict the weather?

The Ad/Match Price Guarantee is very broad; it practically covers all products, all competitor's coupons and all ads...provided the competitor falls within a certain radius of the store. The only thing it doesn't cover are gimpy/confusing advertisements and double/triple coupons. Having said this some managers do not fully understand...for whatever reason...this policy so in order to preserve profit margin they do not communicate this to the cashiers. Who in turn provide the wrong feedback to customers. But that's only PART of the problem here....

If Wal-Mart doesn't bridge its logistical problems (that causes out of stock issues) it will eventually become the next Kmart. One of the ways Wal-Mart could solve this problem is to build small-concept distribution/transdock/crossdock distribution centers in order to alleviate backorders and congestion at the larger distribution centers.
