There are some here quite overly concerned with the certification issue.
I am a Quality Specialist in metrology, that's measuring things, not the weather. I have worked for a major manufacturer of electronic components for over 10 years. Both QS-9000 and ISO-14001 certified. We have to meet many standards depending on what end use our components are used for including some UL.
Certification of any BETA units would be a complete waste of time and money. The certification is awarded by insuring that all production steps and components meet the requirements of the proposed standard. This can only be done after the production process is set up and well documented. Once the process meets the standard and the product certification is obtained then changes can be made to the product as long as well documented, and still within the standard that the unit was certified under. Just can't go very far with the cart before the horse.
From reading past PR's noting the intention to use CSA as the certifying body I believe Hydra has already done step 1 below and is most likely communicating with the Project Holder in step 2.
CSA America, Inc. develops standards to support products utilizing fuel cell technologies and products that produce hydrogen. CSA America published the first National Standard for fuel cells in collaboration with ANSI in 1998. Today CSA America continues at the forefront of fuel cell standards development, providing important impetus for development and acceptance of this powerful technology across America and around the world.
Domestic standards are developed using procedures administered by CSA America, Inc. and accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The product standards currently being addressed include stationary fuel cell power systems, portable fuel cell power systems, fuel cell modules, micro hand-held fuel cell power systems, and hydrogen generators using fuel-processing technologies.
Standards in Development -
Working with various stakeholders, CSA America, Inc. has established the CSA America Fuel Cell Technical Committee for the purpose of developing a series of fuel cell ANSI/CSA America standards. Standards projects currently include Stationary Fuel Cell Power Systems (FC 1), Portable Fuel Cell Power Generators (FC 3), Fuel Cell Modules (FC 4), Hydrogen Generators Using Fuel Processing Technologies (FC 5/UL 2264) and Handheld or Hand-transportable Fuel Cell Power Units with Fuel Containers - Safety (FC 11/UL 2265).
International Standards -
International standards are being developed through the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the leading global organization that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. To promote fuel cell standards worldwide, CSA America serves as the administrator of the IEC U.S. Technical Advisory Committee on Fuel Cell Technologies (IEC TC 105 U.S. TAG).
CSA America welcomes the opportunity to develop standards for new technologies and alternative energy. CSA America works closely with other standard development organizations to facilitate the harmonization of national and global standards.
Step 1: Start the application process early
Contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-463-6727 or click here to complete the on-line order form. Here's what we'll ask for:
A marketing brochure or data sheet describing the product (what it is, what it does, and what it looks like)
A photograph of the product
A list of all components or materials used in the product, including the manufacturers' names, model or catalogue designations, electrical ratings (if applicable), and CSA file numbers (if applicable)
Indication of any other approvals either already received or being pursued.
Any alternate materials or components that might be used in manufacturing
Schematic and/or wiring diagrams, if this is an electrical or electronic product
The model or catalogue numbers to be covered by this certification, and the similarities and differences between models
The full name and address of all facilities where the product will be assembled, and a contact person for each facility.
We understand that this product information is one of your company's most valued assets, and our reputation rests on maintaining the confidentiality of the information you provide.
CSA will respond promptly to your submission with a reference number, fixed fee, schedule, sampling requirements, and the name of the CSA staff member assigned to your project (the Project Holder). You will be asked to submit the fee prior to testing.
Step 2: Provide samples and test data
The next step involves providing CSA with a sample of the product you want certified.
Please label all product samples with your project reference number to ensure prompt service. In some cases it might be more practical for the Project Holder to visit your facilities-for example, if the product is very large or the production run is limited. If your product has already been tested by an accredited testing organization, you can include the report containing those test results now.
Step 3: Respond to the Findings letter
Once your product has been tested, you will receive a finding letter. The Findings letter tells you the results of the test and what to do next to obtain certification. This letter may ask you to respond to specific items, or to alter the product to meet certain requirements. If your product is ready for certification, the Findings letter will include a proposed Certification Record, and ask you to confirm this as the published record of the product.
Step 4: Receive final certification
If the product meets the requirements, CSA International will issue a Certification Report and Certificate of Compliance. You may now use the CSA Mark on the certified product upon signing a service agreement with CSA International.
