NIAID Halts Planned HIV Vaccine Trial
BETHESDA, Md., July 18 -- A decision to abort a planned HIV vaccine trial is getting mixed reviews from vaccine advocates.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said Thursday it will not go ahead with the PAVE 100 trial, intended to test a candidate vaccine in 2,400 American men who have sex with men.
Instead, the agency said, it will entertain a proposal for a smaller, more focused trial of the vaccine, focusing only on any possible effect on viral load.
Immediate support for the decision came from two major HIV vaccine advocacy groups, but a third said the move was probably not based entirely on scientific issues and worried it would be seen as a "vote of no-confidence" in the search for an HIV vaccine.
The NIAID move is "a bold decision" that bears in mind lessons learned from a recent failed vaccine study, according to Seth Berkley, president and CEO of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).
"That is the way good scientific endeavors work," Dr. Berkley said in a statement.
He added that his group has been proposing smaller trials "to test for a sign of promise before proceeding to large efficacy trials" and welcomes NIAID's willingness to entertain such a small study.
The Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, an international private-public research alliance, also supported the decision, calling for "innovative approaches" in vaccine research.
"The world also needs to rethink how we design HIV vaccine trials," executive director Alan Bernstein, Ph.D., said in a statement.
"Rather than 'home runs,' we need to emphasize clinical studies that will yield new insights into the human response to HIV and the key factors necessary to achieve long-term immune protection," Dr. Bernstein said.
But Mitchell Warren, executive director of the New York-based AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, said the group had supported the PAVE 100 trial's scientific rationale, which was broadly backed during a meeting of NIAID's AIDS Vaccine Research Subcommittee a little more than a month ago.
"In deciding not to go ahead with PAVE 100," Warren said in a statement, NIAID has "likely considered other fiscal and feasibility considerations beyond these scientific recommendations."
Such issues "carry great weight, Warren said, but "after nearly a year of public hand-wringing and unproductive public attacks on the entire search for an AIDS vaccine, it is essential that this decision not be viewed as a vote of no-confidence for the overall endeavor."
The NIAID said it was making the decision at least partly because of concerns raised by the failed STEP trial, halted late in 2007 because of lack of efficacy. (See: Perplexing Results of Failed HIV Vaccine Grow More Puzzling)
The vaccine tested in STEP, developed by Merck & Co., used an adenovirus 5 vector to carry three HIV genes. There appeared to be a slight increase in risk of HIV infection for vaccinated men who were both uncircumcised and had pre-existing immunity to the vector.
The vaccine that was to be tested in PAVE 100, developed by NIAID's Vaccine Research Center, also uses an adenovirus 5 vector.
Initially, it was to have been tested in 8,500 volunteers in the U.S., South America, the Caribbean, and eastern and southern Africa. Enrollment was to have started in the U.S. in October 2007, but was postponed after the STEP results became known.
Subsequently, the study was re-designed to include only 2,400 circumcised American men without immunity to adenovirus 5 and to focus on the vaccine's effect on viral load, additional safety data, and detailed immune responses.

Ca$h what are you referring to? I don't see any new filings.
Wow I have never seen so much volume. What do you think is going on here? I browse he board from time to time but wow we are looking good now.
I dumped all my shares when we hit .40 I managed to squeeze out a small profit. I started to have a bad feeling about this company. Couple of things spooked me. 1) No responses to my numerous emails to IR 2) Not all car stereos can pick up the broadcast because they dont go down that low, meaning a large number of people who drive to work can't hear the show. 3) Star's deteriorating health 4) Lack of advertising for this station. The list goes on. Good luck to all that are holding. Glad I got out when I did. Maybe things will turn around down the road, but who knows. For now I will follow the show and take a wait and see attitude.
On a down market we did pretty good today!
Sounds like real good news too. We are coming along people!!!
The word is starting to get out. STAR is back!!!!
Nice little pop today! Station continues to sound great.
I live way out in Long Island, NY and I get the signal fine. Don't know what he's talking about.
Thanks for that article!!!
Don't forget the High powered PR machine that's coming.

No show today. Called up the radio station and the receptionist tells me the show should begin Feb. 11
So it looks like we have another week to wait. Hopefully they will send out a press release.
From what I know the show should be on Monday Feb 4. The lack of news from the company is killing me. They updated the website so that's a positive. http://www.pulse87.com
We'll see what happens come monday.
Nothing until the show gets on the air.
I will wait for it to go much lower before getting some more. I have a feeling it will.
Hey Olico just how many shares do you actually have now?
Man it's quiet in here.
Ok who has the most shares of GOVX?
FYI Yahoo board is now open.
From what I'm hearing, the show is now set to begin Feb. 4
Hopefully there won't be any more delays.
I can wait a few more weeks for the show. I'm still holding and staying positive.
Here is a blog from STAR himself
--------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings,
First let me say THANK YOU for all of your wonderful kites!
Weeks ago, upon entering the table of liver reconstruction, I was asked by the floor nurse if I would like to see a priest or minister before the procedure. I replied to her by saying, “No thanks, I stopped hanging out with thieves and con-men back in 1986.”
Although she smiled and said, “I will pray for you,” I could tell she was steamed by my arrogance. The next day when I came out of my drug-induced slumber, I asked that same nurse to keep my door open so she could watch a real three-day resurrection.
More importantly, I’ve had a good support team of friends and family that have helped me through this experience - Buc Wild actually cried at the hospital. As we now move forward, let it be known that I’ve got some unfinished business in Hollywood, California.
Back in 2000 I was side tracked by the world of Hip-Hop and commercial radio while trying to head out to tinsel town and make Star & Buc Wild movies. That dream, that vision, and that reality is now back in my sights again!
If you’ve done your research, you should now know that WNYZ (pulse 87) is a low powered television signal. I chose this venture over another radio deal based upon the fact that I can set up my satellite television operation.
Oh yeah, I’ll be hosting a radio show there as well…See ya in February!
S.

I pray that the 400mg cohort has some positive news. This thing is slowly dying.

Weren't you selling your stocks?
Still no news but the stock is up today. What I'm hearing is that Star recently had liver transplant surgery and is currently recuperating well at home. Not sure when this surgery actually took place but I don't think he will be out that long. Hold on guys. As long as Star dosen't die on us we should be ok, LOL.
I haven't seen any news about a postponement of the show. I hope that is not the case though.
Called Mega Media Group today re: the drop in stock price (718)421-9400. They stated they had no idea why that happened and that there is no new news. I'm thinking maybe somebody just couldn't wait and dumped.
Looks like it's time to start loading up again, lol. This is just too cheap.
Toadws is right. We may see a run up close to the launch but as Stayblazin said we probably wont see anything significant until the next quarter. I am holding for the long term.
Actually I am not new to GOVX. Been some what of a lurker lately but I have been buying steadily.
Loaded up on a couple thousand shares today. Now I'm gonna wait and see what the new year brings.
Hey CA$H or Olico do u have a link to that form?
imo I think they need to either consolidate some of their businesses or discontinue some of them all together. I think it would be better for them to focus on maybe two or three businesses at a time. Cut some of that spending down and concentrate on obtaining more advertisers. They are trying to be a jack of all trades.
