ads are now showing up
it's a subscription service, which means it cost $$$$$
not a threat to qtrax, which is free. new competition for itunes
interestingly enough they promise drm-free tracks, first for a subscription service. that'll give apple a run for their money, so far only universal is signed on. UK only, not operational yet.
There actually are some ads. they are only visible right now when using the qtrax player in the library or download section
darn. i just funded my account to increase my position, pps is up...
new advertisers:
Toyota
AirTran
yellowbook.com
EVERYTHING is getting hit.
i don't think amazon controls what shows up on that box. i think either qtrax picks manually or their using their owns software called xpeer which they're probably just testing out. either way, ipod is still there being advertised.

i think they should build in a 'friend finder'via the popular emails like gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc, plus they should have facebook & myspace integration.
music.qtrax is the portal site & you CAN download from it but only when using the qtrax browser.
the qtrax player is esssentially a firefox browser with a buily in player

1. itunes has not been profitable until this year, & now only marginally. itunes was created for the secondary purpose of keeping consumers locked into the ipod.
2. of the 14% of the ipod owners who actually use itunes to buy music, they have no drm issues with apple bec the songs play on their computer & ipod, so they're not even aware drm exists. that's all i'm saying.
by the way, do you own an ipod?
yep, you are absolutely correct.
i stand by what i said, it's rather simple, no rocket science here.
"in terms of overall music consumption the itunes store is a joke of all jokes"
itunes can account for at most a measly 1% of online music consumption. filesharing is the clear winner
on your second point, the ipod accounts for about 70% of the portable players out there, so itunes drm hasn't been much of an issue to apple, (although that's changing begining with emi & eventually the rest). Of course apple hasn't sold that many tracks to begin with. 5 billion over a 5 yr period ain't much in comparison to the FREE music services.
as far as i know jupiter is a credible source accepted throughout the industry. I know analysts who pay a $hitload of $$$$ for their reports.
lucky, good article- but it's about 18 months old already- ancient for internet. those numbers have since increased for both apple & p2p
grover, according to jupiter research there are over 3 BILLION illegal p2p downloads a month!
Itunes has only 5 billion downloads after being in business for 5 years.
in terms of overall music consumption the itunes store is a joke of all jokes.
furthermore, jupiter reasearch estimtes that 84% of all ipod owners don't get their music from itunes.
you are 100% right.
what amazes me is that ppl can be so ignorant sometimes. a news piece comes out that rhapsody is SELLING drm-free songs at 99 cents each- AND EVERYONE HERE PANICS
rhapsody is just another competetion for itunes, joining the ranks of amazon, the upcoming myspace music store, etc
qtrax is a FREE & LEGAL service competing (primarily)against the FREE & ILLEGAL services.
for every 1 person you find that is willing to pay 99 cents for a song, i'll find you a 1000 who won't. the cold hard facts are that 99% of all songs stored on mp3 portable devices were ripped from CDs or stolen via p2p. Apple only sells on average about 6 songs per Ipod.
what makes qtrax significant is that they have achieved licensing to give away Downloads for free & portable too. We saw from Universal & EMI labels & we will see from Warner & Sony soon. Anybody can get licensing to create an online music store that charges 99 cents. expect more pay-per-download stores to emerge soon, the industry is trying their very best to take away market share from itunes.
IMHO, qtrax should have a invitation only private beta launch. they should automatically invite the 7,000 current users to beta, & then allow each beta user to invite 100 friends. then each invitee can invite 100 of their friends & so on & so forth. this is what gmail did with enormous success.
1. it enables slow & steady growth to test the system, eliminate the bugs, which is what a beta launch is supposed to be.
2. it creates excitement. of course for this to work qtrax would need to have integration tools like facebook's 'friend-finder' with gmail-yahoo-aol-outlook-hotmail, etc
i think it's almost every other week now. it's a global service.
