Online Shoppers Especially Prudent, But At Least They're Buying
The rotten economy likely won't stop e-commerce sales from rising this holiday season, but it is causing Web cash registers to ring less loudly than in most years.
High unemployment, a rocky real estate market and an uncertain outlook have convinced online shoppers to drop high-end TVs, apparel and other items from their shopping lists in favor of less-expensive, discounted fare, according to a number of people in the business.
The average order size at Overstock.com (NasdaqGM:OSTK - News) was $99 for the first half of December, where the seasonal norm is $110 to $125, says company CEO Patrick Byrne.
That's at least an eight-year low, he says.
"I would ascribe it to people tightening their belts and buying less-expensive presents," he said. "It appears people are focused more on their immediate family and doing fewer frivolous purchases for people that are just acquaintances."
PriceGrabber.com, one of the largest online comparison-shopping services, has seen a definite trend toward lower-cost items, says Graham Jones, the company's vice president of merchant accounts.
Sales of high-priced plasma TVs and expensive apparel have been replaced by sales of moderately priced GPS devices and netbook computers, Jones says.
"Last December, high-ticket items started to get a lot of clicks. I haven't seen that this year," he said.
Still, U.S. online retail sales Nov. 1 through Dec. 20 rose 4% from the year-earlier period to $25.5 billion, says market tracker ComScore. It says blizzards throughout much of the nation helped online sales.
But last year was a down year as the recession started to take hold. U.S. online sales for that same period a year ago fell 1% from the corresponding period in 2007.
Even in today's recession, online retailers are racking up sales thanks to discounts, free shipping and foul winter weather.
Any growth in this economy is a good sign, says PriceGrabber's Jones. The company's sales leads are up 1% this season vs. last.
"We were not sure what to expect this year, so we're not too upset," he said.
'Killer Deals'
For Overstock, an online retailer of excess inventory, lower order sizes can have a plus side, if it results in a higher volume of sales, says CEO Byrne.
"You have to put all of that in a blender and mix it," he said.
Discounts have helped sellers. One example is eBags, a leading online retailer of handbags and related goods.
Anticipating a tough holiday season, eBags founder Peter Cobb approached the 550 companies that sell products through his site, asking that they offer 20% discounts on some products through Christmas.
Many agreed, knowing sale items would get better placement on the site, Cobb says.
"We worked with our brands to offer killer deals. We said, 'If you come to the table, your products will be highlighted, and if you don't you have to understand that with 43,000 products on our site, you are going to be pushed way down (on the Web page),'" he said.
He says sales on eBags are up 34% from Nov. 27 through Wednesday compared with the year-earlier period. Bigger selection than physical stores and the ease of ordering help online sales, Cobb says.
"People have confidence in the technology and realize that in a couple of clicks I can find what I want," he said.
Last-Minute-Gift Shop
Traffic to Shoebuy, an online retailer of shoes and related goods, was up 25% this season, the company says.
To boost sales, the company offered free overnight shipping, free return shipping and a last-minute-gift shop.
The strategy paid off for Shoebuy, a unit of IAC/InterActiveCorp (NasdaqGS:IACI - News), says Shoebuy CEO Scott Savitz.
"This will be a record holiday season for Shoebuy," he said. "All these things that we're doing continue to have a good impact on consumers."
Savitz says recent blizzards on the East Coast and elsewhere helped.
"Because of the weather, we did a robust active-wear and outerwear business in the past week," he said on Wednesday.
The Blackhawk Network, a leading seller of third-party prepaid cards, says sales of its plastic retail gift cards through its GiftCardMall.com site this holiday season have quadrupled vs. a year ago.
GiftCardMall sells gift cards for more than 500 retailers, including Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN - News), Best Buy (NYSE:BBY - News) and Home Depot (NYSE:HD - News).
On Monday, the company rolled out a new version of the service. It lets people buy virtual gift cards that can be sent by e-mail to recipients. Sears (NasdaqGS:SHLD - News) and Bass Pro Shops are among the retailers signed up to the program.
The idea is to help the procrastinating shopper, says Terri Llach, Blackhawk's chief marketing officer. But she wishes the company had made the offer sooner.
"If we had it a month ago, that would have been great," she said.
Slow sales of big-ticket items are good news for Liquidity Services (NasdaqGS:LQDT - News). Companies sell excess inventory through its Liquidation.com in bulk, mostly to small businesses, through auctions.
Its number of auctions this holiday is up 20% from a year ago, says Bill Angrick, chief executive of Liquidity Services.
"We know now that consumers are very focused on essential items and are staying away from higher-end discretionary items," Angrick said. "So we have seen an influx of larger-screen LCD TVs, a lot of jewelry accessories, higher-end apparel, high-end fitness equipment and home theater gaming systems.
"These products are not selling as rapidly as expected and as a result are being pulled from the shelves and sold through our channels."
