Retail Track: NARM Makes The Most Of A Down Year
BY ED CHRISTMAN
So, the National Assn. of Recording Merchandisers convention held Aug. 11-14 in San Diego was deemed a success by most participants Retail Track came across, even though it lacked a dominant issue or theme. One distribution president called it "the flatline convention"—he didn't mean that it was dead, just that there was no controversy.
While there seemed to be universal concern about business being down, it wasn't transmitted with the panic or despair that permeated the 2003 convention. Instead, retailers and suppliers took a sanguine approach, pointing out that they had to work together to solve the industry's problems.
With that, some of the issues merchants were discussing appear to have been resolved. For the first time in a while, merchants said they hear the majors talking about releasing product in the upcoming first quarter. Now all the labels have to do is keep the flow consistent throughout 2006, instead of shoving it all into the fourth quarter, their usual modus operandi.
Looking to fourth-quarter 2005, merchants urged labels to examine the release schedule from last year, when music faced strong competition from DVDs. "The real opportunity for the intelligent music marketer this year is to target the weeks in last year's fourth quarter that had big DVD releases," says Kevin Cassidy, executive VP at West Sacramento, Calif.-based Tower Records. "We are looking for who is going to help us punch through last year's comparable-store numbers."
On the exclusives front, retailers switched from condemning them to asking for them.
Meanwhile, non-retailers finally acknowledged the CD burning problem. Recording Industry Assn. of America chairman Mitch Bainwol and Russ Crupnick, president of NPD Group, cited burning as a growing concern in their respective NARM talks.
On to the final night's award ceremony, where Sony BMG dazzled everyone with an 18-minute clip showing the history of music through the voices of its artists. That was followed by Rod Stewart, playing a tight mini-show of his greatest hits.
Earlier in the convention, Universal Music & Video Distribution presented a three-song performance by Styx, followed by a showcase of wares slated to arrive in the third and fourth quarters. Other acts who performed during the well-attended UMVD session were "American Idol" runner-up LaToya London, Ne-Yo, Fefe Dobson and the All-American Rejects.
Afterward, I joined distinguished competitor Mark Pearson for a chance to sit down with London, who has been signed to Concord. London was not surprised to be an "Idol" runner-up, she said, because she has never won a talent contest. She added that her runner-up status was for the best, given that Sony BMG and Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment have an option for one month to sign any artist who competes on the show. By not winning, London said, she was able to sign with an indie label and have some control over her album.
The convention featured 45 performances in total, making it one of the most musically oriented NARM meets in years. Three nights of Club NARM featured great performances by World Leader Pretend, Antigone Rising, Rachel Sage, Raul Midón, Liz Phair and Charlie Sexton, among others. The convention kicked off with sets by Columbia's Delta Goodrem and Welk Music's Nickel Creek, while La 5a Estación and Reik were featured performers during Sony BMG Norte's product presentation, and Blindside was showcased during the Navarre session.
In addition, the trade show featured three or four bands each day. Retail Track was lucky enough to catch a sterling performance by Raining Jane. The guy who seemed to be everywhere at the convention, Harry Perry, also had a booth at the trade show, where he riffed all day long on guitar, promoting his band's album "Video Commander."
As usual, Sony Music Label Group gave a product presentation in its suite. A videoclip highlighted its upcoming releases, including albums from Ricky Martin, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Patti Loveless, Coheed & Cambria, Switchfoot, Three 6 Mafia and Gretchen Wilson. Also coming are albums from Chris Botti, Jamiroquai and Martha Stewart, who will release three Christmas-themed titles.
In other news from the convention, indie-retail coalition Music Monitor Network has expanded and made some key appointments.
The addition of Sound Garden, which has one store in Baltimore and one in Syracuse, N.Y., brings the network's store count to 96, with combined revenue exceeding $100 million.
MMN named Michael Kurtz as president. Kurtz was previously executive director, running the network's day-to-day operations. It also appointed Jon Tueller, of Salt Lake City-based Graywhale, as chairman; and Chris Brown of Portland, Maine-based Bull Moose, as vice chairman.
When the NARM awards were announced at this year's convention, many attendees wanted to know why Amoeba, hailed by many as the best record store in the country, wasn't nominated. Well, the answer is short and sweet: Amoeba isn't a member of NARM and therefore is not eligible for the awards.
In his speech at the convention, NARM chairman Richard Willis, who is also CEO of Baker & Taylor, noted that most press on the industry is downbeat and urged attendees to work to change that. "We have got a good message, and we have to become advocates for the industry," he said.
He also addressed those who criticize the industry for thinking only in the short term. "We won't have a long term," he noted, "if we don't secure the short term."
In what appeared to be the convention's most unpopular announcement, NARM said it will return to Orlando, Fla., next year. The 2006 event will take place Aug. 2-5 at the Gaylord Palms resort. More enthusiasm greeted the announcement that the 2007 convention will shift to spring and the Midwest, running April 29-May 2 at the Chicago Hilton. ••••

Our Lady Peace Survives 'Paranoid Times'
By Melinda Newman, L.A.
Canadian modern rock outfit Our Lady Peace has set an Aug. 30 release date for its sixth Columbia studio album, "Healthy in Paranoid Times." The album was produced by Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi) and will be led by first single "Where Are You," which goes to radio in July.
Other tracks include "Will the Future Blame Us," "Angels/Losing Sleep," "An Apology," "Walking in Circles" and "Picture."
"Healthy" is the follow-up to 2002's "Gravity," which has sold 615,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The single "Somewhere Out There" reached No. 7 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart and also crossed over to top 40 radio, peaking at No. 12 on the Adult Top 40 tally.
Also on Aug. 30, Columbia will issue the DVD "Live," recorded on the band's 2003 tour.
Our Lady Peace will tour this fall in support of the new album, but for now its only live plans consist of a July 2 appearance at the Toronto edition of Live 8, plus opening Canadian shows for the Rolling Stones Aug. 28 in Ottawa and Sept. 3 in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Crowe Finalizes 'Elizabethtown' Soundtrack
By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
The full track list has been confirmed for the soundtrack to "Elizabethtown," Cameron Crowe's highly anticipated new film. Due Sept. 13 via RCA, the project features exclusive tracks from Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, and, as previously reported, My Morning Jacket.
Previously released cuts are turned in by Wheat, Ryan Adams, Elton John ("My Father's Gun," which is also used in an extended trailer on the Elizabethtown Web site) and the Hollies, among others.
Another track, "Same in Any Language," was written for the film by Crowe and his wife, Nancy Wilson, who also supplied original music. It is performed here by Atlanta band I-9, which recently signed to J Records.
Members of My Morning Jacket also appear in "Elizabethtown" as the band Ruckus, which performs the Lynyrd Syknyrd favorite "Freebird" with disastrous results during one scene.
"Elizabethtown" stars Orlando Bloom as a down-on-his-luck industrial designer who turns over a new page when he returns to his Kentucky hometown for his father's funeral. It will open Oct. 14 in U.S. theaters.
Here is the "Elizabethtown" track list:
"60B (Elizabethtown Theme)," Nancy Wilson
"It'll All Work Out," Tom Petty
"My Father's Gun," Elton John
"i.o.," Helen Stellar
"Come Pick Me Up," Ryan Adams
"Where To Begin," My Morning Jacket
"Long Ride Home," Patti Griffin
"Sugar Blue," Jeff Finlin
"Don't I Hold You," Wheat
"Shut Us Down," Lindsey Buckingham
"Let It All Hang Out," Hombres
"Hard Times," eastmountainsouth
"Jesus Was a Crossmaker," the Hollies
"Square One," Tom Petty
"Same in Any Language," I-9
I think you guys picked a good time to get in.September could reveal alot of great things for mediamax. IMO
Extreme, yes go to sunncomm board and look at the provided links in the info section. Click on "ask the tech" Then once the page comes up click on the "cd in question" and bam, the whole list!!!
Extreme, MMXT is non-pink/fully reporting with low outstanding shares and ready to fly!!!!!!!!IMO
Extreme, we just added a bunch more big artists to the list. Just to name a couple, DAVID GRAY AND MAROON 5!!!!!!!!!!!!
Xtreme, I hear there will be a new version of IPOD coming out first part of next month. I wonder if MMXT's ipod ready technology will get the nod????
Berg, I think the revenue is booked long before the album hits the store shelves, probably somewhere around the time we see it put up on the support page. The albums we saw come up on the page today I would assume have already been manufactured so even though some may have fourth quarter release dates, we see the revenue booked for the third quarter IMO. I hope this made some sense. lol
Another mediamax album release this week,
Edited by Jonathan Cohen. August 21, 2005, 3:10 PM
'Step' By Step
Former Phish bassist Mike Gordon and guitar legend Leo Kottke offer up their second collaborative album, "Sixty Six Steps," this week via RCA Victor. The set blends a handful of originals with such covers as Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion," Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" and Pete Seeger's "Living in the Country." The follow-up to 2002's "Clone" was hammered out last December at Gordon's father's house in Costa Rica and recorded just before Christmas in the Bahamas.
"Going quick is a really good way to make an album," Gordon offers. "Coupling that with being in an exotic place and working quickly with that vibe, it keeps it very encapsulated, mood-wise. I really like the way that aspect of it came out. It kind of brought me somewhere special."
As for tackling a classic rock sacred cow like "Sweet Emotion," Gordon admits he was initially skeptical. "The record company told us they had a lot of luck on a couple of Leo's albums with cover songs that got airplay, and would we consider it?," he says. "At first, I was like, 'Well, f*** that!' We're not going to be told what to do! But I realized, actually, it's a nice idea."
Phish fans will also recognize album track "Ya Mar," which was often covered at the band's shows and has appeared on four of its "Live Phish" releases. "It didn't seem we needed to go in and try and record it," Gordon says of the Cyril Ferguson-penned, Mustangs-popularized tune. "But after working on it and adding and subtracting parts, eventually we liked the idea." The duo begins a North American tour Sept. 15 in Lawrence, Kan.
I'd have to agree with you on that!!!!
Howdy, yes, waiting to see if we will be a part of that!!!
Sahd, my sentiments exactly.Anxiously awaiting 4th quarter ramp ups!!! Proof is in the pudding!!!
More good releases to boost the third quarter!!
Keep it coming Mr. Hesse!!!!!!!!
Syleena johnson JIVE more big names attached to this one too!!!!
Syleena Johnson gets Chicago stars' help on CD
July 20, 2005
It's a hometown throw-down. Chicago rap and R&B stars Kanye West, R. Kelly, Common, Twista and famed producer Jermaine Dupri have lent their talents to ''Chapter Three: The Flesh,'' the third album from Chicago vocalist Syleena Johnson.
Due Sept. 13 from Jive Records, the set was previewed in April via the single ''Hypnotic,'' featuring Kelly and Fabolous. The accompanying video clip may be viewed on Johnson's official Web site.
''The Flesh'' also features Common on ''Bulls Eye,'' Twista on ''Phone Sex,'' Johnson's former Soulife labelmate Anthony Hamilton on ''More'' and a repeat performance from Kelly on ''Special Occasion.''

Sahd, JIVE RECORDS.Maroon 5 cd/dvd should do well too. Another big name
Maroon5 Plans Its Next Step
By Melinda Newman
After the phenomenal success of "Songs About Jane," Maroon5 is hard at work crafting new material for its sophomore album for Octone/J Records.
"We're kind of re-creating the sort of vibe that we had set up when we were writing the songs to the first record," guitarist James Valentine tells Billboard, "where we rented a house and we got some instruments set up."
"Songs About Jane" peaked at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 a full 67 weeks after its June 2002 release. The set, which has sold 4 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, spawned the multi-format hits "This Love," "Sunday Morning," "She Will Be Loved" and "Harder To Breathe."
Such a successful label debut does give a band a nice boost of self-esteem, Valentine admits. "Now at least we know that we have the world's ear, and I think that does bring some confidence, but at the same time, we're not going to stop really pushing ourselves to develop our songcraft."
While Valentine says no sure direction for the project has emerged, the band is leaning toward more uptempo material.
Even though the album won't be out for some time, Maroon5 fans will get a new look at the band with the Sept. 20 release of "Friday the 13th -- Live at the Santa Barbara Bowl." Available on CD and DVD, the project includes previously unreleased songs and a cover of Oasis' "Hello."
Before getting down to serious work on the new album, Maroon5 has a handful of summer tour dates on its plate, including appearances at England's V festivals in Chelmsford (Aug. 20) and Staffordshire (Aug. 21), as well as a trio of dates opening for the Rolling Stones.
Berg, right on!! this is what we need!!
Charlie Wilson, Could be a big another big album for us!!!!
Charlie Wilson founding member/lead singer of The Gap Band and everyone’s favorite “Uncle” will release his debut album Charlie, Last Name Wilson on Jive Records in August, 2005.
Charlie Wilson’s album is being Executive Produced by R. Kelly. Additional producers/writers on the album include Scott Storch, Wil.I.Am, Justin Timberlake and Dre and Vidal.
In addition to his album Charlie can be seen on Snoop Dog’s video for “Signs.” Charlie will be performing with Snoop on the Late Show with David Letterman on May 3.
Well said sting!!
Intuition??? Tell me something I don't already know mario.LOL!!
A tid bit from my last post,
I still believe we have a good shot at some impressive growth for the rest of the year provided BMG and others get serious real soon as the start of the busy season approaches. As I've said before, it's up to the labels to move forward with conviction from here.
I'll be watching for any such conviction in the coming weeks and months!!BMG,SONY,UMG,WARNER,EMI,KOCH.
I simply stated I would like for this to play out this year and not get delayed again!! Thank you for your posts!!
BTW. I hope "get shorty" works this time too.
UR2W, The update is that we still have 6 albums charting in the top 200.Most of which are still the same bigger releases like foos, dave mattews, backstreet, cassidy, babyface and kieth anderson. Artists like the foos and dave matthews are starting a second push by releasing second singles with impressive videos and tours , so we could see reorders for for some of these bigger albums to be booked in the third quarter. As far as new releases go, we have had a good number of releases so far from BMG continuing to go out over this quarter and a few for next quarter so far. EMI has from what I've seen has given us about ten albums so far which is good. The support page shows just one release coming out from sony this month. Hoping for more from sony to back up mario's claims. In my opinion thus far, I haven't seen what would amount to alot of growth from last quarters releases, this is why I have been a bit critical.I still believe we have a good shot at some impressive growth for the rest of the year provided BMG and others get serious real soon as the start of the busy season approaches. As I've said before, it's up to the labels to move forward with conviction from here. I will tell you EMI seems to be a bit more committed with their international rollouts then BMG at this point. All of this talk about Universal and Warner doesn't amount to anything for us shareholders until these companies use our product with conviction and/or proper news releases come out for us.Long term, we look to be well positioned but just like everybody else I don't want to see this get pushed into next year before us shareholders get any value back.We went through this same crap last year and so on...
Neil, you make some very valid points in reguards to the agreement between the two companies.
Very true doc,if apple and these labels don't get moving in the next month or so it will be another LONG COLD WINTER!!LOL The third quarterly report is all we have for the rest of the year as far as revenues go, and so far I have to admit, no big increase as of yet for quarter 3.
Thanks for that input mario.
docgfd,
Volume breaks I'm sure, with some of the big names we protected, would make for different pricing, thus creating an average unit price.
CG,I think your little birdy is what got you in this mess to begin with right??????LOL
Sting, very true. How about a move of more than just a penny or two???How about a test of last years highs??? How about anything above .10. Some will be recouping and some will be profiting but at this point any real movement that will put money back in the shareholders pockets would be nice!!!!!!!!!!I would like to think with all the good happening at the company, we could muster some decent news and promotion to accomplish this!! THIS YEAR!!! At this point, I think I'm in the cautiously optimistic group!!!!!Thanks for asking!!!
CGI,THE LONG SHAREHOLDERS NEED TO BE REWARDED THIS YEAR!!!
Neil, you make a good point. Like I said I have been told both ways in the past by the same person as well.I hope it's just the 40%, the audit should tell the tale.Hopefully someone qualified can make some sense out of your inquiry.
