MDT $83.26 Medtronic to separate its patient monitoring and respiratory
interventions businesses

Medtronic said Monday it's planning to separate its patient monitoring and respiratory interventions businesses in a move aimed at better positioning both the NewCo and Medtronic for long-term success. The Dublin-based medical device company said the business had about $2.2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2022. It expects the separation to be completed in the next 12 to 18 months. "Independently, NewCo will be a leading connected care company with a compelling leadership position, attractive margins, and potential for growth acceleration with increased investment and dedicated capital allocation," Chief Executive Geoff Martha said in a statement. "Looking ahead, we remain focused on active portfolio management with an ongoing process of evaluating potential additions and subtractions to further accelerate Medtronic's growth over the long-term." Once the move is completed, the company is expecting modestly faster organic revenue growth and an increased weighted average market growth rate. The combined business has a team of more than 8,000 employees worldwide. Medtronic stock rose 1.2% premarket and is down 19.5% in the year to date, while the S&P 500 SPX, +2.37% has fallen 21%.

The queue of ships waiting to unload at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach fell from a peak of 109 ships in January to four vessels this week.

Merrchants push for lower fees

Credit card rewards are funded, at least in part, by fees that merchants pay. When you use a credit card to make a purchase, the retailer is charged somewhere around 1% to 3% of the transaction amount in order to accept your payment and have it processed securely. It’s called interchange, aka a 'swipe' fee, and it's set by the payment network that credit cards run on-often Visa or Mastercard.

Futures slide as China worries sour global mood

U.S. stock index futures fell on Monday, as worries about China's economy dented sentiment globally after sharp gains on Wall Street last week driven by better-than-expected earnings and hopes of a less aggressive Federal Reserve.

U.S.-listed shares of Chinese companies such as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Baidu Inc led the losses in early premarket trading, down 12.5% and 11.7%, respectively, as President Xi Jinping's new leadership team heightened fears that growth will be sacrificed for ideology-driven policies.

Meanwhile, delayed data on gross domestic product showed the Chinese economy grew a better-than-expected 3.9% in the third quarter, but retail sales disappointed with a meager rise of 2.5%. read more

Projecting the new AP Top 25 college football rankings after Week 8 of the 2022 season

The college football rankings will have a new look when they are updated on Sunday after more than a handful of ranked teams took losses during Week 8. When all the scores and results are settled, we should expect some movement in the top 10 and a return to the AP Top 25 for a surging LSU team that beat previously
beaten Ole Miss handily in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week.

The Tigers' 45-20 win in the Magnolia Bowl was the program's sixth victory in the last seven meetings in this historic rivalry; it also extended their winning streak in Death Valley to seven games. Just like in 2014, Ole Miss showed up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, undefeated with hopes of contending for the SEC West only to leave with a loss. The Rebels will take a step back in the standings and fall in the new AP Top 25 as LSU -- now 6-2 overall and sitting first place in the SEC West -- will return to the national rankings for the first tie since its one-week showing earlier this month.

Ole Miss wasn't the only team that started the day undefeated but will no longer have the rankings advantage of that zero in the loss column. Of the nine teams that entered Week 8 unbeaten, six of them of played an FBS opponent (Georgia and Michigan were off, Tennessee played UT-Martin). Three of the remaining six lost. UCLA took its first defeat of the season at Oregon, Ole Miss fell at LSU, and Clemson took down Syracuse. Of course, the matchup between the Tigers and Orange guaranteed that one unbeaten team would lose, but it was an example of how tough it is to remain
undefeated with ugly showings sure to occur along the way.
