U.S. stocks were trading up Tuesday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average added
15 points to 13184.1, the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rose 1.8 points to
1405.9, and the Nasdaq Composite ticked up 0.69 point to 3023.21. Among the
companies with shares actively trading are Towers Watson & Co. (TW), Estee
Lauder Cos. (EL) and NCR Corp. (NCR).
Estee Lauder's ($60.56, +$5.55, +10.09%) fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose
25% as the beauty-products company saw a strong rise in revenue across all
regions and major segments. Results slightly topped estimates, though the
company issued a cautious forecast.
NCR ($22.48, -$2.64, -10.51%), a maker of automatic teller machines, was cut
to neutral from outperform by Wedbush. Wedbush said NCR's emerging-markets
business, crucial to growth, is at risk if foreign practices come under broad
investigation. NCR is looking into allegations it violated sanctions on Syria
and antibribery law in China and the Mideast, which raises immediate
implications for multiquarter investigations and potential fines, Wedbush said,
while also putting $200 million to $300 million of Chinese revenue at risk.
Following recent reports of a tipster's allegations NCR may have violated
sanctions and antibribery laws, the company said in a filing it has "concerns
about the motivation of the purported whistleblower," and noted some of the
allegations "appear to be untrue."
Michael Kors Holdings Ltd.'s (KORS, $48.27, +$5.92, +13.98%) fiscal
first-quarter earnings nearly tripled, comfortably beating expectations, as the
company saw double-digit percentage same-store sales gains in both North
America and Europe and also recorded a rise in licensing revenue. The retailer
also raised its full-year estimates and offered a strong current-quarter
outlook.
Towers Watson's ($51.73, -$6.83, -11.66%) fiscal fourth-quarter earnings
surged 49%, despite a surprise drop in revenue, as the employee-benefits
consultancy recorded declining costs. The underwhelming results were followed
by an even-more downbeat first-quarter view as the company sees flat revenue,
at best, amid currency hits and slack demand. The company said its benefits
arm's revenue was hit last quarter by "billing transition challenges" while
talent management was hurt by Europe's economic woes.
Envivio Inc. (ENVI, $2.49, -$3.21, -56.32%), which provides Internet
video-networking technologies, said its fiscal second-quarter revenue will miss
its earlier expectations due to a slowdown in spending by its service-provider
customers, particularly in North America and Western Europe.
Other Stocks to Watch
Aegean Marine Petroleum Network Inc.'s (ANW, $6.72, +$0.51, +8.23%)
second-quarter earnings fell 16% as the Greek shipping-fuel supplier recorded a
bigger loss from the sale of noncore vessels, masking revenue growth. Revenue
beat estimates from analysts, however, who had expected revenue to drop
slightly.
Array BioPharma Inc.'s (ARRY, $4.82, +$0.26, +5.59%) fiscal fourth-quarter
loss narrowed as the drug company reported higher license-and-milestone
revenue. Earnings beat Street expectations.
Cellcom Israel Ltd.'s (CEL,
CEL.TV>CEL.TV, $6.72, +$0.58, +9.44%) second-quarter
earnings fell 50% as the Israeli cellular provider faced increased competition
and higher expenses. But earnings beat analyst estimates.
CommVault Systems Inc.'s (CVLT, $50.14, -$2.58, -4.89%) stock may have more
downside risk than upside potential, said J.P. Morgan. Dell represented 22% of
CommVault's revenue last quarter and JPM said the computer maker is likely
favor its own IP, which may lead to Dell's contribution to CommVault's revenue
declining again.
Dick's Sporting Goods Inc.'s (DKS, $48.73, -$1.81, -3.58%) second-quarter
earnings fell 27% on a charge tied to its investment in struggling British
sporting-goods retailer JJB Sports, masking higher revenue. The company raised
its full-year adjusted earnings estimate and same-store sales outlook, but
second-quarter results weren't as strong as prior quarters.
Flowers Foods Inc.'s (FLO, $20.30, -$0.58, -2.78%) second-quarter earnings
edged up 0.6% though revenue increased less than expected amid softer consumer
demand and higher ingredient and packaging costs. The packaged baked-goods
company backed its earnings and sales forecast for the year, but only due to
its recent acquisition of Lepage Bakeries, which hadn't been part of its prior
outlook.
Home Depot Inc.'s (HD, $54.92, +$2.10, +3.98%) fiscal second-quarter earnings
rose 12% despite pressure on sales growth, as its laser focus on productivity
continued to bolster margin and whittle down overhead costs. The country's
biggest home-improvement retailer raised its full-year earnings estimate ahead
of Wall Street estimates, but the company's affirmed sales growth outlook was
short of consensus.
Natural gas-processor MarkWest Energy Partners LP's (MWE, $50.54, -$2.22,
-4.20%) public offering of six million common units priced at a 3.8% discount
to Monday's close. The company plans to use proceeds from the offering to
purchase additional common units to fund its capital-expenditure program, for
working capital and for other general-partnership purposes.
Micros Systems Inc. (MCRS, $46.93, -$1.95, -3.99%) will likely see its
fourth-quarter results, due to be disclosed later this month, pressured by
currency headwinds, said Thomas C. McCrohan of Janney Capital Markets, which
finds the shares attractive but warns most Street estimates haven't fully
accounted for currency impacts.
Monster Beverage Corp. (MNST, $56.19, +$2.92, +5.47%) doubled the size of its
share-repurchase program to $500 million, as the energy-drink company seeks to
bolster shareholder value.
