LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - 09/16/09) - Platinum Studios, Inc. (OTC.BB:PDOS - News) has partnered with Disney Channel star David Henrie to star in the theatrical adaptation of the Platinum Studios' comic book "The Weapon." Henrie stars in Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place," which won an Emmy on Saturday for Outstanding Children's Program. In addition, "Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie" was cable television's most-watched program of the year with over 11.4 million viewers. "The Weapon" hails from Platinum Studios' large multi-universe library of over 5,600 comic characters, which rivals that of Marvel, recently acquired by Disney for $4 Billion, and of the recently revamped DC Entertainment, owned by Warner Bros. From its universes of comic book characters, Platinum Studios has projects in development at multiple studios, including Disney, Sony, Universal and DreamWorks.

David Henrie of the Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place" will pair with Platinum Studios to develop its comic book series, "The Weapon," into a feature film he'd star in.
"Weapon" follows martial arts enthusiast and inventor Tommy Zhou, who has developed a ground-breaking portable innovation that an evil order will stop at nothing to steal. Released in 2007, "Weapon" was created by Platinum chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg.
"'The Weapon' is so awesome, and my Disney audience will enjoy the empowerment and action-filled journey my character experiences," Henrie said. "I'm a huge fan and student of MMA (mixed martial arts), and I hope to bring that to the character of Tommy."
Rosenberg ("Dead of Night") and Jim Henrie ("The Beautiful and the Damned") will produce; Randy Greenberg of the Greenberg Group will exec produce.
Platinum also is developing "Cowboys and Aliens" at DreamWorks and Universal, "Atlantis Rising" at DreamWorks and "Unique" at Disney. The company is finishing up postproduction on "Dead of Night" with Hyde Park Entertainment and Omnilab Media.
Henrie, repped by WME and Luber/Roklin, most recently appeared in the Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie." He has had recurring roles on "How I Met Your Mother," "That's So Raven" and "The Pitts."

OT: Studios seek comic relief
Hollywood hungry for heroes with DC, Marvel deals
By MARC GRASER
Fanboys aren't used to being popular. Most actually like being on the fringe.
But less than two months after Hollywood wooed them aggressively at Comic-Con, geeks have never been cooler.
Last week, Disney ponied up $4 billion to buy Marvel Entertainment. This week, Warner Bros. took over DC Comics and rebooted it as DC Entertainment in an effort to more actively turn the comicbook publisher's library of colorful characters into major moneymakers for the studio's various divisions.
While the timing of the deals were coincidental -- both had been in the works for years -- they're likely to have significant impact on Hollywood.
The major mark will be apparent at the megaplex, as more comicbook properties head to the bigscreen. They won't necessarily be centered around traditional superheroes -- pics adapted from graphic novels like "300," "A History of Violence" and "Road to Perdition" weren't -- but it will help if they are.
That's because studios are eager to produce and distribute more tentpoles that not only perform at the box office but become franchises that generate considerable coin from TV shows, DVDs, websites, videogames, toys and merchandise, licensing deals, theme park attractions and other opportunities.
Superheroes are simply more conducive to such goals.
At a time when studios are also looking to curb spending, comicbook pics are also seen as more cost-efficient, considering that they're not dependent on big stars. The characters are the big draw.
Christian Bale may be the current Batman, but Warner Bros. could always cast a new thesp to don the cape and cowl; it's done so multiple times in the past. Other characters like the Green Lantern, which Warners is readying for a 2011 pic release, with Ryan Reynolds starring, are perfect for such recastings, given that other characters have donned the same super suits in the comicbooks.
How those characters are adapted for various platforms at Warners is now the purview of Diane Nelson, prexy of DC Entertainment.
The exec knows a thing or two about how to power up tentpoles and keep brands alive, having overseen Warners' "Harry Potter" franchise for the studio since 2000. Also, as the head of direct-to-DVD arm Warner Premiere, she released several successful animated films featuring DC's more iconic characters.
Nelson's new post at the studio is one that production prexy Jeff Robinov has wanted for some time as a way to speed up the development process of DC's top properties, an effort that's frustrated both fans and corporate bean counters over the years.
"I've long believed that there was much more we could do across all of Warner Bros.' businesses with this great body of characters and stories," says Robinov. "There are endless creative possibilities to build upon."
But Robinov needed someone who understood the intracacies of producing tentpoles and managing them across various studio divisions -- from theaterical to homevid, videogames to consumer products -- so that they can be fully exploited over time.
Superman will likely fly again. The Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and the Justice League are also being developed for features, though lesser-known characters like Jonah Hex, Lobo and the Losers will bow first. A revamped slate will be announced early next year.
Nelson will devise a strategy for each property, working closely with studio division heads to plan out when products are rolled out around the launch of a DC character.
"We're putting long-term plans in place for each property," Nelson says. "We want to use the same model that worked with 'Harry Potter.' "
She'll also work closely with producers on the creative directions of the characters (even pulling back control of some projects) when they make the leap to other entertainment platforms. In the past, individual producers controlled more of that process.
"They're company-owned rights and resources, as opposed to a project a producer may bring to us," Robinov says. "(Producers) know it's a corporate agenda and the rights need to be run by the studio."
Fanboys, however, aren't necessarily excited by the new developments.
They fear the Mouse House will give Marvel a Disney makeover and slap Mickey ears on Spider-Man's head.
They've heard about plans to reinvent classic properties before, and gripe about how Warner Bros. has squandered the appeal of its Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera brands over the years.
They also worry that Nelson may not be the right choice to shepherd a new Superman movie or marshal the rest of his superfriends. The exec saying things like, "I'm the first one to admit, I'm not by my nature a comic fan," won't make them feel any better.
But Disney promises to leave Marvel alone and give it the same creative autonomy it gave Pixar after it acquired the toon shop in 2006. Pixar, in fact, wound up with even more power after Iger handed the company control of Disney's entire animation division.
Warner Bros. is actually working on reviving its Hanna-Barbera toons through pics based on "Tom & Jerry," "Yogi Bear" and "The Jetsons."
And Robinov didn't choose Nelson because she has a pile of comicbooks stacked in her office (although she probably does now). She's proved her ability to navigate the often politically complicated waters of a conglom like Time Warner, and work with very vocal creatives, like J.K. Rowling, to turn "Harry Potter" into a cash cow for the studio.
"This has been something that's been carefully looked at for a long period of time, and we feel we're ready now to act on it," Robinov says. "We've got a lot to work with here."

OT: Entertainment stocks rally, analysts upgrade
Stronger-than-anticipated rebound in ads expected
By Georg Szalai
Sept 11, 2009, 09:41 AM ET
NEW YORK -- The week is ending on a high note for entertainment stocks, with at least two prominent industry analysts publishing bullish reports.
Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Wienkes on Thursday raised his view on the entertainment sector from "neutral" to "attractive."
And Friday morning Barclays Capital analyst Anthony DiClemente published a ranking of his favorite industry stocks that also predicted more upside ahead.
Both argued that despite a rally since March, entertainment stocks remain affordable, and they cited an expected advertising recovery now that the recession seems to be at or near its end.
"A stronger-than-anticipated rebound in national advertising -- a primary driver of fundamentals and sentiment across the group -- is the single most important factor in our updated outlook," said Wienkes. "We acknowledge what we think will be continued weak consumer spending and local advertising trends, but think these will be more than offset by rebounding national advertising, stable affiliate fee growth and solid content trends as secular disintermediation risk remains distant."
Similarly, DiClemente predicted that "a cyclical recovery for U.S. advertising will more than offset media's well-known structural concerns in 2010/2011."
Valuations in the sector are still "attractive relative to historical levels and other market sectors," Wienkes added ahead of next week's annual Goldman Sachs Communacopia media investor conference. And he predicted that entertainment stocks will increasingly reflect fundamentals in a phase of normalization after three "relatively distinct trading stages of 'capitulation,' 'beta rally,' and stabilization."
DiClemente overnight echoed that. "Despite a buoyant summer break and a nice welcome-back rally, the longer view maintains that media stocks are not only "highly torqued" for an economic recovery, but are still generally inexpensive versus the market and other consumer stocks," he wrote in his report.
For example, media/entertainment must still play catch-up to such sectors as retail and gaming, and sector stocks still trade about 10%-15% below their recent historical valuations pre-financial crisis.
Which stocks do the two analysts prefer right now?
Wienkes upgraded Time Warner shares to "buy," saying he likes it and Viacom's stock best.
And DiClemente said as a back-to-school initiative of sorts, his team has created a forced-ranking system as stock-picking within the entertainment and media sector is key after the rally of recent months. His top five stock picks are Walt Disney, Discovery Communications, Viacom, CBS Corp. and News Corp.
While entertainment executives have remained cautious on the outlook for an ad recovery, the Barclays and Goldman analysts see a slow improvement.
Overall sentiment is still improving, DiClemente argued, pointing to reports this week that General Motors would launch a major auto marketing campaign later this month. "That's not just stabilization language, that's recovery talk," he said.
Meanwhile, Cowen analyst Doug Creutz on Friday sounded much more somber notes in downgrading some big entertainment names, arguing that "advertising growth (will) be sluggish at best over the next two years."
He predicted that U.S. ad spending will decline 1.3% in 2010 before finally turning slightly positive in 2011 with a 1.2% improvement.
Creutz downgraded shares of Viacom from "overweight" to "neutral." He also cut CBS Corp. and News Corp. from "neutral" to "underperform."

OT: Warner Brothers Restructuring DC Comics
Wed, September 9, 2009 at 11:40 AM
Even though Marvel is clearly ahead in the race, DC is slowly (but surely) catching up. 2010 will bring forth The Losers and Jonah Hex for fans, the offensively-pricey Green Lantern starts production this coming Spring and we'll eventually get Batman III and that Superman re-whatever.
Now Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that Jeff Robinov (who himself was recently given a new juicy contract-renewal as he's being suited to take over the company) plans on restructuring DC Comics from the leg up with an official announcement coming as soon as this afternoon.
Long story short, a number of DC properties that have been lingering into nothing-ness (read: Wonder Woman) have been recalled back to the studio away from their long-time producers. If said properties return to their perspective parties, it will be at a reduced deal. The studio doesn't want to hand over too much damn money to the likes of Joel Silver and Chuck Roven. No offense, guys.
I know, I know. My first reaction was also, "Oh so this is their way of stealing Marvel's thunder!" But that's just not the case, says Finke's source(s). Said plan has long been in the works. It's just conveniently timed to be announced after that whole "Disney buying Marvel" thing. You might have heard about that.
If this means we get the next Superman film out sooner rather than later, I'm game.
UPDATE: And as earlier promised by Ms. Finke, Warner Brothers officially announces their new plans including new title (read: DC Entertainment) in additon to long-time big-cheese Paul Levitz stepping down. So it appears a fire has in fact been lit under WB's ass. Good. And who benefits from all of this? Fans eagerly awaiting DC-related films.

Found out today that the IBOX was using too much server space and took longer than 6 seconds to load. They want a simple IBOX, not too much pictures but text and links are okey. I have to think about how to rebuild this now.
Yea, I dont know what there doing, but hopefully they will restore it. I can always take the cached version on PDOS IHUB and copy paste it back in, but it will have to be soon. Google may be a re-cache and wipe that out too. Then Hrs of work again.
WTF, we hit 10c this morning. Nice volume too. Hopefully, we see some good news on some new projects or does someone know something good is comming.

Cowboys vs. Aliens vs. Lone Ranger
Fifteen months ago the Hollywood Reporter and then Collider's Cal Kemp (linking to the THR story) reported about Robert Downey, Jr. eyeing a lead role in Cowboys and Aliens, an adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's 2006 graphic novel series. Earlier today Variety's Michael Fleming reported that director Jon Favreau will probably team with Downey on the project.
I love this idea sight unseen and not even having flipped through Rosenberg's comic book. I love it because it's absurd and stupid and dead-on, and because the film has a chance to redeem the idea of merging six-shooters, horses, buckaroos and super-sized other-wordly FX. The debacle known as Barry Sonnenfeld's Wild Wild West took this idea and killed it for years. If Cowboys & Aliens doesn't make it work -- or worse yet, if it does the same "oh, God, I hate this, lemme outta here" Wild Wild West thing -- the wrath of the moviegoing world will come down on Cowboys & Aliens like a ton of bricks. No, it won't. People will go to see it no matter what. But guys like me will be shattered.
Why would I drop everything to see Cowboys & Aliens in a New York minute but I can't stand the idea of Johnny Depp starring in The Lone Ranger? Why would anyone want to see The Lone Ranger for any reason, under any circumstance, under the influence of any drug...whatever? Clearly, the Favreau-Downey is the cowboy movie people want to see. If I were Depp I'd bail.
Cowboys & Aliens will be a DreamWorks/Universal project. The producers are Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Ron Howard along with Steven Spielberg. (Good movie for Spielberg -- he'll be able to make more money!) Platinum Studios CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg plus Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are also producing.

Soon to Be BLOCKBUSTER!
A couple years ago, Empty Room Studios was hired to do initial concept designs for Platinum Studios to present in order to secure the Cowboys & Aliens movie. We were given 4 days to produce over 100 concept designs for their pitch. Here are a few of those concept designs. We also worked on the second graphic novel of Cowboys & Aliens, with Alana Abbott providing the story, Rick Hershey and Anthony Cournoyer providing art, Gene Kelly lettering, and Jeremy Mohler as project manager/editor. You can check out Cowboys and Aliens II by clicking HERE

OT: Disney/Marvel: A hero sandwich
Studio melds comic book co. into pic plan
By MARC GRASER
When the Walt Disney Co. proclaimed last year that the studio would get back to focusing on family fare that defines the Disney brand, one thing was missing from the equation: the films that would attract families to the megaplex.
After releasing a string of underperformers like "Race to Witch Mountain," "Bedtime Stories" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic" at the box office, company topper Bob Iger was quick to admit the problem wasn't the economy but the "choice of films and the execution of the films," as he told Wall Street in May.
"It's not the marketplace. It's our slate," Iger said.
Iger's candid confession could easily have been read as the kind of corporate insecurity that has been known to put studios into a creative coma as they figure out which pics may actually connect with auds.
Yet the Mouse House is a different animal these days.
With Iger as Disney's Mr. Fix It, the company is showing a surprising level of confidence -- unusual at a time when the recession might be expected to have the opposite effect -- and is aggressively brokering deals that won't just prop up the studio at the B.O. but also produce properties that create significant financial upside for the rest of Disney's divisions.
Its latest move -- last week's $4 billion deal to buy comicbook giant Marvel Entertainment -- gets Disney into the superhero biz, an area that other studios have clearly capitalized on but one that the Mouse House hadn't been active in, other than releasing Pixar's "The Incredibles."
The more than 5,000 colorful characters involved in the Marvel pact will surely help launch a franchise or two -- something Disney hasn't done since "National Treasure" in 2004 -- but also give Disney the ammo to attract males, especially young boys, to its movies, TV shows, cable channels, websites, theme parks and merchandise, which now appeal mostly to girls with "High School Musical," "Hannah Montana" and the Jonas Brothers.
"Cars" is still one of the surprising standouts in the Disney/Pixar roster: Released in 2006, the toon, which earned $426 million worldwide, continues to perform as a runaway seller of toys to boys. And the Disney XD channel (formerly Toon Disney) plays more than 20 hours of Marvel-produced programming.
While the resulting tentpoles under the Marvel mantle should help energize Disney's release schedule for years to come, the studio had been quietly but vigorously pursuing other ways as well.
That includes turning to prolific producers on the lot or such high-profile directors as Jerry Bruckheimer, Robert Zemeckis, Tim Burton, Jonathan Mostow, Rob Marshall, Jon Turteltaub and McG to remake classics "A Christmas Carol," "Alice in Wonderland," "Swiss Family Robinson," "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Tron," or adapt popular videogames ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"), TV shows ("The Lone Ranger"), or even segments of "Fantasia" ("The Sorcerer's Apprentice"). A fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" is planned, as are three additional installments of "National Treasure."
The Disney plan also involved bringing Steven Spielberg onto the lot through a deal to distribute DreamWorks' slate of films through the Touchstone banner and Liberty Media's pay cabler Starz. The move, which saw Disney pony up $175 million as part of an $825 million fund to finance DreamWorks' rebirth also enables Disney to pump more pics through its strong, but until recently underutilized, distribution pipeline, since DreamWorks plans to release as many as six films a year.
The only sticking point in that pact could be the types of films DreamWorks decides to make. Red flags will surely be raised if any are considered too violent, raunchy or serious and don't mesh with the Disney brand. DreamWorks' first pic through Disney will be a remake of the invisible rabbit pic "Harvey." Spielberg will helm the pic, which is a co-production with 20th Century Fox. DreamWorks pics like actioner "Cowboys and Aliens" and comedy "Dinner for Schmucks" are being released by Universal and Paramount, respectively.
But that may not matter. Disney sees the DreamWorks deal as a relationship builder, and one that pays it back a healthy distribution fee without requiring considerable resources. It's just not one that drives the rest of Disney's divisions.
"I don't care if a Touchstone movie does $100 million on $30 million of cost," Iger told Fortune late last year. "Its success doesn't breed any other success in the company."
While rumors around town have an axe hovering over Miramax, Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook said the indie arm is safe for now.
"There is no for-sale sign on Miramax," he has said. "It's a great place to find new talent and nurture interesting projects. And when you do hit it, it can be extraordinarily profitable and gives an added dimension with not a giant amount of overhead."
Toons, obviously, are an easier fit with the Disney brand, and under the helm of Pixar's John Lasseter, Disney's animation division has worked to get back to its glory days.
With December release "Princess and the Frog," Disney will introduce its first new princess -- named Tiana -- in more than a decade. She's expected to become a fixture in the Mouse's theme parks and to help sell dresses and other clothing in Disney's successful line. So will "Rapunzel" and a Scottish princess in "The Bear and the Bow," planned for holiday 2010 and 2011, respectively. "Toy Story 3" bows next summer after the re-release of the original duo, all in 3-D, while "Cars 2" races into theaters in 2011, timed with the opening of a themed 12-acre Cars Land at the overhauled California Adventure park.
Lasseter's toon team is said to be especially excited over the Marvel buy, with its animators already scouring the company's library, identifying characters it can turn into movies, TV shows and direct-to-DVD releases.
The expanding slate of releases across multiple age ranges is certainly giving Disney something to talk about. The studio started contracting its sked in 2006, to release 12 to 14 films a year. Fewer films have enabled it to spend more time promoting pics upon their release across all of its divisions, making them appear more high-profile, with an eye toward earning more at the B.O.
But it is now confident it can make even more coin.
It showed off its renewed confidence at Comic-Con this summer when it rolled out impressive presentations for "Alice," "Christmas Carol" and "Tron," and its animation slate that touted its support of the 3-D format, with the first ever 3-D screenings at the fanboy convention. In the past, the Mouse House's presence in San Diego had often been awkward, with the studio unable to connect with the fanboy auds. In the future, Disney may find itself heading down to the Con with a bigscreen version of Marvel's 3-D Man. (Yes, it's an actual character.)
Before that happens, however, Disney will host its own answer to Comic-Con in Anaheim this month, dubbed the D23 Expo, at which the company will show off virtually everything Disney has to offer over four days. The event was conceived in the wake of criticism that the Mouse wasn't reaching out enough to Disney's diehard fans.
With its latest deals, Disney also hopes to keep its shareholders happy. Investors like nothing more than consistency, meaning a constant flow of revenue, and Disney is providing that to them through safe bets with a relative high hope for return. While many observers initially questioned the price, buying Pixar in 2006 for $7.4 billion proved a worthwhile gamble.
Likewise, Disney's movies are easy sells with an instant recognition factor. So are its stars.
It repeatedly gives roles to Nicolas Cage, Dwayne Johnson, John Travolta, Robin Williams and Miley Cyrus for just that reason. And after Johnny Depp helped Disney earn $2.6 billion at the B.O. with the three "Pirates" pics, it made him nearly as important as Mickey Mouse, enlisting him to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for a fourth pic, and tapped him as Tonto in "The Lone Ranger," planned to start after the next "Pirates" adventure. He'll next be seen as the Mad Hatter in "Alice in Wonderland."
Although Disney won't be able to make movies around Marvel's higher-profile characters or even integrate them into its theme parks -- they're set up at other studios and at Universal's parks for many years to come -- the Mouse House will still be able to capitalize on their success. Marvel collects a percentage of all revenues generated from films featuring the characters, which will now go into Disney's coffers. Marvel expects to post profits of around $100 million this year.Marvel may only have made $110 million from the $2.9 billion generated by the first three "Spider-Man" films, but Marvel has a sweeter deal for its next five pics -- the next two "Iron Man" films, "Thor," "The First Avenger: Captain America" and "The Avengers. Those films will be released through Paramount, but the studio only collects a distribution fee of around 8%.
When Iger brokers an expensive deal, he likes to call his acquisitions "a perfect fit" for Disney. He did so with Pixar, then with DreamWorks and again with Marvel. Of the latter, he said buying the comicbook company was "a great opportunity at the right time."
After reporting Disney's first operating loss since 2005 this summer, the timing certainly couldn't be better.

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - 09/03/09) - Platinum Studios, Inc. (OTC.BB:PDOS - News) has received extensive industry media coverage since The Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety reported the possibility that "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau would direct the DreamWorks Studios and Universal Studios feature film adaptation of Platinum's graphic novel "Cowboys & Aliens." Imagine Entertainment principals Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are producing with DreamWorks' Steven Spielberg and Platinum topper Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of "Star Trek" and "Transformers," are producing, as well as writing the adaptation of the graphic novel with Damon Lindelof of "Lost." Kurtzman & Orci are also spearheading Platinum Studios' other high-concept comic adaptation, "Atlantis Rising," for DreamWorks.
Disney's announcement this week of their $4 Billion acquisition of Marvel, along with Warner Bros.' ownership of DC Comics, leaves Platinum Studios as one of the largest rights holders of exploitable comic book characters in the world which stands independent of any studio affiliation.
Universal, Sony, Disney and DreamWorks Studios are among the companies involved with Platinum Studios' comic-based projects. The producers of blockbuster films including "Terminator," "Harry Potter," "Shrek," "Aliens," "Wanted," "300" and "The Rock" are among the other industry players actively pursuing projects drawn from Platinum Studios' library of thousands of untapped characters.
Platinum recently completed production on its own independently financed, self-produced feature film, "Dead of Night," starring Brandon Routh and Taye Diggs, with an anticipated 2010 theatrical release.

Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr. making 'Cowboys and Aliens'
By Jay A. Fernandez and Borys Kit
September 01, 2009
Director Jon Favreau and actor Robert Downey Jr. are bringing their iron-clad collaboration to another comic-book property: "Cowboys and Aliens."
Downey has been attached to the DreamWorks project since last summer, when "Iron Man" co-screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby were working on the adaptation of the Platinum Comics graphic novel written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley.
Last fall, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who are executive producers on the project, took over scripting with "Lost" exec producer Damon Lindelof.
And now Favreau, who is riding a killer wave as an actor, writer and director, has come on to make it his next gig.
True to its title, the sci-fi Western explores what would happen if traditional Old West enemies, cowboys and American Indians, found the prairie attacked by aliens in mid-1800s Arizona. Long in development, the "Aliens" project was originally set up at Columbia with "Sahara" writers Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Donnelly writing.
The Favreau-Downey-Kurtzman-Orci-Lindelof nexus represents the current nucleus of genre geek pop culture. Kurtzman and Orci recently delivered the sci-fi mega-hits "Star Trek" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," Lindelof maintains his control over the "Lost" mindscrew, and Favreau and Downey are about to serve up another highly anticipated "Iron Man" saga.
For DreamWorks, the property represents an essential tentpole to help elevate its newly independent status now that the studio's first round of financing is complete. DreamWorks obviously felt bullish on the "Cowboys and Aliens" project when it decided to include it among the 17 projects it bought from Paramount upon leaving last fall.
DreamWorks declined comment.
As part of that exit arrangement, Paramount has an option to co-distribute the film, an opportunity it presumably will engage given Favreau's $572 million success on the Paramount-distributed Iron Man property.
Imagine Entertainment principals Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, who was once a possibility to direct, are producing along with Platinum topper Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Universal, where Imagine is housed, co-developed and is co-financing the project.
As it ramps up production for the next few years' slates, DreamWorks would likely anchor its 2011 summer to "Cowboys." DreamWorks and Kurtzman and Orci are also developing the Platinum Comics property "Atlantis Rising," another big-budget sci-fi hybrid, with director Len Wiseman and writer Joby Harold.
The CAA-repped Favreau is in post-production on Paramount/Marvel's "Iron Man 2," which is slated for a May release. As a writer and actor, he will next appear in the Universal comedy "Couples Retreat," hitting theaters Oct. 9. He is also providing a voice to the MGM comedy "The Zookeeper."

A note from the Chairman & CEO, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg...
Yesterday, Disney announced that it was acquiring Marvel Comics for $4 billion. (Variety article) What does this mean for Platinum Studios, Inc? While Marvel is tied to Disney and DC to Warner Brothers, Platinum Studios, with over 5000 characters, is free to work with any and all studios!
I am also proud to say that we just wrapped principal photography on “DEAD OF NIGHT," the first film that we have ever been 100% responsible for - from financing, to physical production, through post production (post and visual effects should take us through March 2010). I want to thank everyone involved in making the shoot a success - and for finishing on time and under budget! We rewarded our fans with a sample of what's to come by debutinga short reel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, and we received great feedback.

Disney to buy Marvel for $4 bln
Stock and cash deal to combine character library
By Georg Szalai and Paul Bond
Aug 31, 2009, 09:39 AM ET
Disney has agreed to acquire Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in a deal that brings Marvel's portfolio of 5,000 characters, from Spider-Man and X-Men to Captain America, the Fantastic Four and Iron Man, under the Disney umbrella.
"We believe that adding Marvel to Disney's unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation," said Disney CEO Robert Iger.
In a conference call Monday morning, he said the deal should close by year's end.
"Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses," said Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter.
Under the terms of the deal, Marvel shareholders would receive $30 per share in cash plus about 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share. Overall, the deal is valued at $50 per Marvel share as of Friday's closing price.
Both companies' board have approved the deal. It now requires antitrust and Marvel shareholder approval.
Miller Tabak analyst David Joyce called the deal a "good move" for Disney, even though it "should put some near-term risk arbitration pressure on it."
He pointed out that the Pixar acquisition a few years ago worked out well for Disney under Iger's leadership.
"Disney already knows how to monetize characters across multiple platforms, and now it has 5,000 (Marvel) characters to apply its success to," Joyce said. "It helps give Disney a new, rational area to expand its exposure to younger audiences, especially boys, in which Disney had lost some balance in recent years."

Did you see the Movie "High Plains Invader" formally called Cowboys vs Aliens on SyFy. Not Bad for a low budget special effects cowboy movie. I wonder how they make money on TV movies like this? Im betting C&A with its high budget and better special effects dept will look so much better.

EXCLUSIVE: 'Magdalena' Writer Weighs In On Story, Cast, Comparisons And More...
Posted 3 hrs ago by Rick Marshall in News, Top Cow, Video
MagdalenaLast we heard from the "Magdalena" camp, the upcoming adaptation of the Top Cow property had landed "Midnight Meat Train" director Ryûhei Kitamura to helm the project, with "The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations" writer Holly Brix penning the screenplay.
Chronicling the adventures of a direct descendant of Mary Magdalene who protects the world against evil using a variety of supernatural powers, "Magdalena" already has its stars in "Step Up" actress Jenna Dewan (playing the heroine, Patience) and "Hellboy II" actor Luke Goss (playing Patience's mentor, Kristof). Last year, we featured a week of video interviews with Dewan (we've embedded some of them in this post), and now we thought we'd check in with the new "Magdalena" writer to see where the project's at these days—and where she's planning to take it.
MTV: Where is the film at right now? Where are you in the process?
HOLLY BRIX: Right now, we're working out a deal so that I can start writing. We're not at the beginning of the process, but we're just going to script.
MTV: Is there a particular storyline you have in mind for the film? Is there a certain arc you've identified for adapting?
BRIX: Obviously, I read all the comics and we talked about different versions of the story, but the one I found most compelling was Patience—her arc in becoming the Magdalena. We decided to focus the movie on her. It's the transfer of power from her mother's reign as the Magdalena to hers.
MTV: Jenna Dewan and Luke Goss have already been cast. When did that happen in the process? Have you had to change anything with their casting or work around them in their roles?
BRIX: It was sort of simultaneous. I got the orders to beat out a story around the same time they were casting it. I always knew these were the actors they had in mind, so it was sort of fun to have that in my mind as far as what they looked like, how they sound, etc.
Usually when you're writing, the casting isn't done and won't be done for years, so you have to come up with your own casting in your mind. It was nice to have real actors who have some acting chops that I could work around.
MTV: What about the new director, Ryûhei Kitamura—have you been communicating with him about the story?
BRIX: We've been talking a lot. We do most of it via email, but it's been super-fun to have an idea and just ask him, "What do you think of this?" and then have him right away say, "That's cool. Why don't we do this, too?"
MTV: The comparison everyone's making with the film is that it's a mix of "The DaVinci Code" and various action movies like "Wanted." Is that a fair comparison for what you're planning?
BRIX: I do. It's definitely a supernatural action movie, so I think 'DaVinci Code' is a good reference as far as all the Catholicism in it. But in addition to that story, it's also a really straightforward action movie.
There's not a lot of secret codes to unlock and that sort of thing.
MTV: Magdalena made more than a few cameos in other Top Cow comics, and various Top Cow characters made cameos in her stories. Any of that happening in the movie?
BRIX: You never know. At this point, we haven't worked that in, but we're certainly adding a lot of elements that weren't in the source material. I know in the Top Cow universe, she appears in the other comics and vice versa, so I think there could be an opportunity for that. But right now, nothing is set in stone.
MTV: Action movies with female leads have had a rough time finding an audience in the past. Are you worried about that with "Magdalena"?
BRIX: The movie's never really been a female action movie, because of Kristof. It's more of a two-hander. He's a huge character in it. He's definitely her mentor and fights right alongside her and teaches her everything she knows.
They go the whole movie together. He doesn't drop out somewhere along the way.
We always envisioned it as a two-hander. she's the one with the superpowers—the supernatural element of the story is her—but he's definitely right there alongside her the whole film, so it could easily be considered his film as well.
MTV: So is it more of a "buddy cop"-style film?
BRIX: Well, there's not really a romantic storyline. They're pursuing the same objective, and I don't want to say it's like '48 Hours,' but it is sort of like that. They both have arcs, they're both right in the foreground, and I consider the story both of theirs.
We're definitely trying to set it apart from some of the other movies where they haven't had that compelling male lead, too.
MTV: So do you have an ETA for the script and when production might start?
BRIX: We'll probably have a draft done within six weeks, and then hopefully we'll get financing pretty quickly and can start setting a date for when we can shoot this. I think everyone's committed to having a quick turnaround.

OT: 'Green Lantern' Delayed By Australian Economy?
Posted 17 hrs ago by Josh Wigler in DC Comics, News
Ryan Reynolds, already causing controversy by starring in different superhero projects from Marvel Comics and DC Comics, is going to need a lot more than a power ring to combat his deadliest foe yet: the global economy.
Production Weekly reports that production on "Green Lantern," the Reynolds-headlining superhero film from Warner Bros. and DC Comics, is currently in jeopardy due to the financial climate in Australia, where the film is currently pegged to shoot.
"['Green Lantern's'] proposed Australian shoot is understood to be under threat after the rising Australian dollar has blown out production costs," reports Production Weekly's Twitter feed.
If the rising dollar in Australia is preventing "Green Lantern" from getting made, why doesn't Warner Bros. simply change the shooting location? Well, that might be easier said than done.
A film of "Green Lantern" size is likely to pick its city very carefully, sizing up tax incentives and other monetary factors in order to make production as cost-effective as possible. So, while the movie could technically relocate, it probably couldn't do so without delaying production. "Green Lantern" has already changed dates once before from December 2010 to June 2011, and should a location change occur, it's entirely possible that the film could see yet another release date shift.
Assuming that "Green Lantern" does get delayed, what does that mean for "Deadpool," the other superhero project with Reynolds' name attached to it? Might a potential delay on "Green Lantern" require another actor to assume the role of Wade Wilson? If his ability to juggle both characters wasn't in question before, it certainly could be now.
(What does this say about WitchBlade which was rumored to be filmed in Australia too. Higher costs for this also. Since they havent started yet, would it not be a better idea to go somewhere where the incentives are the same or better and the dollar value is better than here? JMO)
The hit movie will get there, it just will be next year. I dont know of anything in the pipeline that will be sooner. Maybe Bonesaw, I read somewhere it was done, not confirmed BTW, but needs a distributor. I say sell it to Cartoon Network and move on. Everything else is next year. If we go really low, I may have to scrape up some cash. :)
IMO
OK: Wowie was a good idea....(joking).
Hopefully we wont go into the 03 range or lower. But without press on any developments or even some free press from Comic blogs or to investors other than Money TV, we could have a problem. Lets see, the last press was in April. We are waiting on press from "the Darkness: Aprodite XI, MTV deal, Youngblood, 5 TV shows, 10 gaming contracts, Dreamworks, Vanguard, Dylan Dog trailer and release date and unknown contracts, to name a few. Im know I missed some.
Dont you think if we got some of these answers, the stock would be higher. I do. I think some good news would boost us up. But it has to be good. IMO only
Im not sure? I understand how DNA makes money, seen enough Jurrasic Park movies, but since I dont think you can clone WOWIO or piece part it out, I just dont know. IMO
