That's why I keep hearing Southwest, southwest....
Bad murrayhill! BAD BAD BAD
"Only the new Airbus jets would have in-flight entertainment systems."
It seems this deal is not for airplane retrofits, but only new planes. In that market, airlines certainly have more options.
One roadblock with APS/B.Boyer is that he remains an A. Airlines employee, and AA appears to have given him some support.
Now how many potential customers want to put their IFE services in the hands of one of their competitor's workers?
IMO, BB should quit his day job.
Yes, but isn't the same thing the Japanese did to us with VCR and other inventions in the 70s and 80s? In the long run a stable and quasi-capitalist China (even as a competitor) is good for world peace.
I'm sorry, but this seems like a bizarre statement.
OT What I meant is wait until the baby boomers start collecting social security and needing all of that expensive medical care, anyone know where that money is coming from?
Everyone knows profit growth in this recovery has mostly been due to cost cutting (and exceptional productivity growth). Top line growth? I don't see it happening without better labor numbers. It sure ain't coming from debt financing, mortgage refinancing is reaching an end, and everyone knows the U.S. consumer is already living way beyond their means.
The perils of opening world markets in a mix economies at different stages of growth.
Just think of it as the growing pains of the E.U. only an order of magnitude or two greater.
Yeah, the Fed and federal government have shot their entire rate cut/tax rebate wad and the effects are starting to wear off with still no job growth in sight. You think the federal govt. has problems now, just wait until the baby boomers start withdrawing from the national money pot en masse. That will give new meaning to the word deficit.
Think/hope/pray for Southwest. That's the kind of order size/brand name that will move the PPS significantly IMO.
IMO, the big difference is the availability of free IFE already on TED.
Alright! And here comes the EDIG conspiracy phase! Just like with past projects people will say EDIG is making up business and other companies (possibly out of stupidity, perhaps boredom, but more likely just for the sheer wackiness of it all!) are going along with this big con. Let's see, besides APS, AA seems to be involved, divx, United, and probably a whole bunch of other airlines to boot. The "trials" are actually a type of "American Idol" to see which airlines PR machines are best at helping EDIG pull one over on the investing public. Supposedly Lorenzo Lamas frequents one of B.Boyers spas and over a late night sitz they cooked up this whole plan.
Thank god we have owd and others to spell things out for us. Hooray!
Or they could provide one of those hand crank power generators. Better yet, link stationary bike pedals (they've got room underneath the seat in front, no?)to an electrical generating system, so passengers can just bike power the entire flight. They could supply IFE and treat economy-class syndrome at the same time!
YES! First Aloha, next stop Jamaican Airways, and then, the world!!!!!! Wahoo!!!!
Take a visit to Times square some day soon. Word is that in the milling crowds you may spot literally dozens of ipods as you walk around.
The early bird gets the worm...
Question is exactly how many in service 737s have IFE installed under this directive (I know nothing about this, just assuming that there are some unaffected systems installed under other guidelines perhaps)?
"And on Sunday, APS begins a DigEplayer trial with a trans-Pacific carrier whose identity is still confidential. Boyer said APS is producing players customized with that airline's colors and logo for the test."
Oh, s---, not ANOTHER trial. Man and now it looks like we'll be dealing with people across both oceans in Asia and Europe. What a headache! That's all we need, multilingual customer demands. This is turning into a global nightmare, wouldn't you agree owd?
"the airline offered the players to customers for $10 a flight with reasonable success. Ted now is trying lower prices to determine whether that increases business."
Calling owd! Calling owd! Please work your spin magic on this statement. Like I said, its all about finding the sweet spot between $0-10.
I don't think you've been paying much attention to the market recently. Walmart and all the other download sites are fighting over the last slice of the pie--that's Apple's pie.
Let's compare apples to apples.
Alaska: DigEplayer is the only IFE available
TED: You already get free tedvision and music programming
Do you think that might have something to do with lack of enthusiasm for shelling out $10?
I mean, how many people are so addicted to tv/video that they can't find something else to occupy themselves (I usually sleep myself) for a few hours on a flight.
Obviously, United doesn't have enough room on board to provide a player to everyone in coach (as a free rental would allow), and $10 looks like it was on the high end, so they are taking the logical step of tinkering the rental fee to make sure that all of the players they do have space for are rented. Maximizing revenue and all that. That is the purpose of a trial, no, to fiddle around with things and get it right? We can't all be as perfect and omniscient as some of the Prophets (hehheh) on this board.
WTF, I should go work for a low cost carrier, they are stealing all of my ideas!
Gee, you should go work for the Bush or Kerry campaigns, you seem to have a knack for creative "ellipsing" of comments.
"APS gave TED some players to use in a test that showed less than stellar results"
Funny, I thought they said the response to the rental fee was lukewarm, but that customers enjoyed the ability to control their content.
Ah well, must be my rose colored glasses.
Please present posts. Don't recall verbatim, but I'm pretty sure I used words like "hope" or "might". Sorry, if you take most message board posts as gospel.
Good point, oh well, maybe they could install digEs in the bathroom, I don't think the lineups are long enough as it is.
But I like FFs logic better, kills two birds with one stone. Let's bring back a new and improved People's Express!
I think they decided to rip out the airplane bathrooms and use the free space for storage. Carrying around all that c--- just added so much to fuel costs that it didn't make much business sense. Anyway, they figure the digEs would be able to take people's minds off of any problems that could arise from lack of toilets on the longer haul flights.
If you make it, they will come...
Awwww.....don't be like THAT
With those numbers, it isn't. They might be hoping to move more than 10k.
Thanks moxa,
Nice to hear positive firsthand experiences:
"First class seats are leather while in economy passengers are in slim-line cloth-covered seats. Pitch in first class runs around 36 to 37 inches while it is 32 to 33 inches in the back. A real feature in first class - and an amenity available in economy as well - is Alaska's one-of-a-kind "DigEplayer". The device is pre-loaded with roughly a dozen films (admittedly most aren't first-run), a wide range of digital music, TV shows, and other features. The hand-on-your-ear cheap-o earphones make people look like Princess Lea from Star Wars (I use my Bose Quiet Comfort 2 noise cancellation headphones with the players and they work great!!!). During the month of January, movie choices included "In America", "Daredevil", "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen", "Princess Bride", and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation". An eclectic selection. The DigEplayer are compact, their batteries last the length of a six-hour flight, and truly make the flight go faster. No other domestic carrier has anything like it. It's great. "
The market "environment" isn't helping things either.
The desire for differentiation among the carriers may in the end be an obstacle for the dige. This might have been avoided if EDIG had somehow managed to license the underlying platform to a variety of IFE developers and let them run with it. But since it was APS' baby we are stuck in bed with them (which is not necessarily a bad thing)
Doesn't help that they (the majors) are perpetually on the bankruptcy merry go round.
I think Ted's still got some growing pains. They sound like they just decided to throw everything into the blender, but that runs counter to the philosophy of the low-cost carriers that brought them into existence. Having two IFE solutions is redundant, especially when they are looking to provide the best bang for the buck. And if your customers are budget conscious, its less likely that they'll be willing to ante up for the extra services.
That said, carrying 5-15 units on each flight for the few big spenders on board makes a nice selling point and helps 'differentiate' them in their marketing from the competition. I don't see many other carriers going the same route, though, it will be one system or the other.
Any rental fee is just icing on the cake for the airlines. The main cost benefits come from:
1) reduced weight/fuel savings
2) lower costs for retrofitting planes
3) targeted IFE costs (only passengers who want it pay for it)
Reminds me of that scary toy doll teddie ruxpin
You got me all wrong, fella, I'm with you!
As a wise man once said, "READ MY LIPS, NO NEW TESTS!"
Yeah, yer probably right about the Ted thing too. I thought the majors were getting eaten alive by southwest, jetblue, et al. direct-flight, no-frills (well at least they started that way) business model, but you seem to have a better handle on the industry dynamics than me (http://www.dot.gov/affairs/bts1703.htm). Thanks for sharin'.
We can only hope the next test APS has lined up is with Air Jamaica or some other REAL airline, wahoo!!!!
G-dammit! I couldn't agree more. WTF are EDIG and APS doing messing around testing with the 2nd largest american/global air carrier when they could be out selling 30-40 units to someone like Air Jamaica?
Don't tell me they're looking for a repeat of what happened with their first test, because I'm not just gonna sit around and watch it happen!
The last thing we need is the headache of some big multinational company pestering us with orders and product requests.
Yeah, sure Ted is hip and represents how the majors plan to respond to the low-cost carriers that are eating their bread and butter, but do we really want to be a part of some radical change in the airline industry?!!?!?!?
I say no to you
I wouldn't doubt the granting of a discounted price for the reasons you mentioned. That's why we have to hope for additional sales.
We can't charge a premium until we show customers we've earned it.
I haven't assumed anything, perhaps others have. This is just some arbitrary limit based on their estimated needs AFAWK. The pendulum could easily swing in the other direction, if AA finds themselves growing rapidly, they might up their orders over 6000. The point is, there is no need really for anyone to suggest that orders will be lower or higher than the 6000 number right now.
