Boeing to suspend upcharge for aircraft safety components, NY Times reports
The cockpits of the crashed Boeing 737 MAX aircraft both lacked optional safety upgrades for which the plane maker charges airlines extra and which are not required by the regulators, The New York Times' Hiroko Tabuchi and David Gelles report. The report notes the planes were missing "the angle of attack indicator" and the "disagree light", which could have alerted the pilots if the aircraft sensors were at odds with one another and also better responded to the new software system updates in determining the angle of the plane's nose relative to oncoming air. Boeing did not disclose how much the full set of safety features costs, but expressed that it would consider safety features standard as part of a fix to get the grounded planes to operate again.

Canadian Solar reports Q4 non-GAAP EPS $1.61, consensus $1.01
Reports Q4 revenue $901.0M, consensus $872.02M. Total solar module shipments were 1,951 MW, compared to 1,590 MW in Q3 and the revised fourth quarter guidance of 1.9 GW to 1.95 GW
Canadian Solar sees Q1 revenue $450M-$480M, consensus $875.41M
The company expects the net profit for Q1 to be low or negative, primarily due to typical lower production and sales volume during the Chinese New Year holiday, IT upgrade, a lower module ASP, decreased sales of solar power projects compared to previous quarters, and an expected foreign exchange loss due to the appreciation of the Chinese RMB against the U.S. dollar. Expects Q1 total solar module shipments to be in the range of approximately 1.3 GW to 1.4 GW, including approximately 50 MW of shipments to the company's utility-scale solar power projects that may not be recognized as revenue in Q1. Gross margin for Q1 is expected to be between 16% and 18
Canadian Solar sees FY10 revenue $3.5B-$3.8B, consensus $2.48
For FY19, expects total module shipments to be in the range of approximately 7.4 GW to 7.8 GW. Revenue guidance reflects the impact of an expected lower module ASP and lower revenue from solar project sales. While the profit in subsequent quarters will likely recover from Q1 level, as module and project sales increase, the company currently expects its net profit for 2019 to be lower than 2018

Off-duty pilot saved Lion Air 737 day before fatal crash, Bloomberg reports
An off-duty pilot correctly diagnosed the issue when a Lion Air crew struggled to control their diving Boeing 737 MAX 8 and informed the crew on how to disable a malfunctioning flight-control system and save the plane, Bloomberg reports, citing two people familiar with Indonesia's investigation. The following day, a different crew facing what investigators said was an identical malfunction crashed killing all 189 aboard and the previously undisclosed detail of the off-duty pilot signals how some 737 MAX pilots faced with the malfunction have been able to avert disaster.
