I meant the date the answer is due is irrelevant. Samsung will answer to avoid default. It does not have to settle by then. The pressure to settle comes at the hearing on the merits stage.
If they dont answer, they are in default. Will never happen.
There is 30 days to respond, but that date is artificial. The parties can settle anytime before the Court would rule, which could be around 6 months or so. Whether Samsung answers the complaint is rather irrelevant. The question is whether it will wait for a ruling.
I agree. This stock is all about 3G now. One more big deal, and we're off to the races. No deals, and the ship will slowly sink. Place your bets!
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said yesterday that it would appeal an arbitration decision requiring the South Korean company to pay $134 million in royalties to InterDigital Communications Corp. InterDigital, King of Prussia, said on Wednesday that it had received the award from an arbitration tribunal of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. Samsung had disputed that it owed certain royalties to InterDigital for its wireless technologies
how much would you like to wager that we open up at least at $30.80 or lower?
Looks like the fun will continue today. Asks are already at $30.50. Ugh. Bought back in around $30.90 yesterday thinking maybe we settled down. Whether the Barrons folks and analysts are correct. maybe the best thing to do is wait for it to sink down a few points and load up again then. This stock is tough - very tough - to guess as to where it will go in the short term.
PACER: Arbitration confirmation for Samsung is available. Nothing interesting. Just asks the Court to confirm the award and identifies the arbitrators.
Some very positive statements, and some very negative ones. Though, this is the most negative I've seen Tom to date. With the end of 2006 quickly approaching, the need for a new 3G license does loom large...fortunately, not as large as a few months ago before LG (which will keep us positive regardless)
Even more of a reason for Nokia and IDCC to have agreed on 3G. Instead of agreeing to enforce the agreement or find more mutually satisfactory terms, the parties decided to terminate it all together and continue the delaware litigation.
Question: Nokia appealed the arbitration award, and then IDCC settled by saying if you pay the arbitration award, we will allow you out of your 3G obligations until April of 2006. Why would IDCC not do the same thing with Samsung? Outside of the supposedly less contentious relationship, is there any reason to believe that IDCC wont given Samsung the same settlement...basically, pay the arbitration award and we'll start clean "in discussing" 3G? IDCC didn't require Nokia to pay 3G to settle the appeal, why would it require Samsung to?
Thanks, I will buy back in. Just not sure of the time yet. Could be as soon as tomorrow, I just want to see the price settle down first.
Given yesterday's win, its kind of shocking, but for the first time in 4 years, i sold out today and own no shares. I will buy back in the $20s, if it goes there. As I indicated this morning, I feel a repeat of the dip to the $26 or $27 range, before another run up.
What was the old price target? The headline on the news article only mentions price cut (and not the "buy" rating). Unfortunately, we are now down 20 cent in pre-market.
I understand that Carpenter and Nollenberg have new reports. Does anyone have the price targets?
I believe that it is more likely than not that Samsung will appeal. That said, I think it is very likely that Samsung will either lose that appeal or settle (more likely the latter). With that in mind, IF we continue the fall today and it is not minor (let's say, greater than 50 cents), then I expect that we will drift back down to the $25 to $28 range. I anticipate that the drift will be temporary, and later in the year we will pop back up to today's levels. We may just be in for another round of falling to $26, only to go back to $33...basically a repeat of what just happened. Of course, this is all speculation and anyone's guess is as good as mine. I just have an uneasy feeling about the next few days. Long term prospects still look good, assuming we can get some more 3Gs on board.
Samsung responds....in the Korean Times article, it states that it "may" wait to hear from a "higher court" before paying anything. Sounds like its going the route of Nokia. That shouldn't be a surprise, Nokia did it and received a free and clear pass for 3G to date. Why not take a run at it, with IDCC you know you'll always get something for it.
What's amazing is that some people bought in pre-market at $36.50 and above.
Any person who guessed the first week of any month after June had a good chance of being right given the ICC schedule. But, enjoy patting yourself on the back.
$134Million from Samsung!
News? Selling at $35.99
Arete - did we ever learn what its price target for IDCC is?
Spree, you are beyond making a mountain out of a molehill. Paul Hastings is a very large, international law firm that practices every type of law under the sun. The fact that they might perform some work for IDCC is simply uneventful. All large companies have lawyers, and often from more than one firm. The firm could be doing everything from employment contracts, renegotiating leases, taxes, etc... Nothing here to look at.
What was the insider percentage of holdings previously?
Your speculation is no more plausible than mine.
I'm simply stating that, in the past, there have been instances in which a large volume price drop preceding a negative news annoucement, and was hoping that's not the case here. As I see the price climbing back up right now, I'm hopeful that's not the case.
News may be out (to some), and we just dont know it. Hence, the large volume price drop. Hope that's not the case.
You assume we win. There are a lot of inter-related factors here, and there are a few scenarios - while less probable in my opinion - that are not favorable.
Apparently, we're better off on days when the market is down.
Re: Infineon. Does anyone have the remotest idea how much in royalties we can expect from the Panasonic and/or LG design wins.
Nollenberger Capital reiterates buy, lowers from $44 to $43
InterDigital Communications "buy," target price reduced

Nollenberger Capital
NEW YORK, August 3 (newratings.com) - Analyst Casey Ryan of Nollenberger Capital Partners maintains his "buy" rating on InterDigital Communications Corp (IDCC.NAS), while revising his estimates for the company. The target price has been reduced from $44 to $43.
In a research note published this morning, the analyst mentions that the company has posted better-than-anticipated Q2 results and record recurring revenues. The EPS estimate for FY06 has been raised from $4.11 to $4.13 to primarily reflect the upside in Q2. The EPS estimate for FY07 has been reduced from $2.20 to $2.13 to reflect lower license wins.
Was this a meets, beats or fails?
Why would Samsung sign a 3G deal if Nokia resolved 2G without signing one? Why not hold out and see what happens with Nokia, including whether Nokia can prove that IDCC's patents are not essential or otherwise not needed to be licensed? At a minimum, if it holds out until its sued, it can settle the litigation for less than the full amount IDCC now wants.
Now there are trades at $25.75. Not sure what is going on. Hopefully, the early trades were mistakes and will be voided.
News article (excerpt from the NAMC Newswire..1 hour old)
Now InterDigital Communications (NASDAQ: IDCC) is a company that develops digital wireless components to semiconductor companies and handset manufacturers. They were downgraded by Piper Jaffray yesterday and that caused the stock to tumble as it shaved off $6.82 off its stock price to close at $25.89 on over 10 million shares traded. It looks like this was way overdone and actually I am saying that it was oversold and overdone, you could very well see a bounce today as investors realize this. We will be doing a feature on the wireless industry again in July that will shed some light on the future of the industry.
Perhaps PJ is responding to IDCC touting the company to PJ on one day, and then having the execs sell the next.
6:58am this morning.
Its likely because PJ advised its clients of the upcoming downgrade to underperform. Unfortunately, from the bid/ask so far (conceding its early), we are in for another rough ride today. I hope we stay above 31.
I dont know if it means anything, but pre-market asks from 7:15am today are in the low 32s (down about 50 to 60 cents). I didn't know you can flash an ask that early.
