InterDigital Boosts Licensing Portfolio with Huawei Tie-Up
Zacks Equity Research
,Zacks•April 29, 2020
InterDigital, Inc. IDCC recently announced that it has inked a global non-exclusive patent licensing deal with China tech behemoth — Huawei. This comes as a surprise to many as the two companies have a bitter history of being actively involved in numerous patent license litigations. Apart from putting an end to years of legal disputes, the strategic move is likely to enhance InterDigital’s diversified portfolio of wireless technology and intellectual property amid the current economic downturn. Post the announcement of this news, shares of InterDigital increased 15.1% to close at $57.70 on Apr 28.
It is worth mentioning that patent infringements suits are common in the technology industry. Last year, the Wilmington, DE-based wireless service provider had filed a patent infringement case in the United Kingdom against Huawei, the world's largest provider of telecommunications gear. Reportedly, InterDigital claimed compensation for Huawei’s illegal usage of the former’s 3G, 4G and 5G standards-essential patent licenses. Acknowledged as one of the top innovators and contributors to cellular wireless standards, InterDigital sued Huawei in 2011 on similar grounds of patent breach. Later that year, the China-based company filed a case against the U.S. firm for antitrust investigation.
Despite years of prolonged legal spats, Huawei and InterDigital agreed to drop all pending lawsuits over patent infringement and license fees. Notably, the Trump Administration had added Huawei along with 70 of its affiliates to the Entity List — a list of entities that are ineligible to receive any item without government approval. This mandated U.S. suppliers to apply for licenses to provide components to Huawei. Despite the trade ban, two major American holders of patents for wireless networking technology — Interdigital and Qualcomm Incorporated QCOM — continued its relationship with Huawei. Apparently, both the companies believe that since U.S. export control laws do not cover their patent technologies, they can continue to generate lucrative revenues and develop 5G technology with the China-based company.
Recognized as the world’s third-largest smartphone provider, Huawei is a large customer for both InterDigital and Qualcomm. Per the latest agreement, InterDigital has authorized the China tech behemoth to utilize some of its patents on Huawei products, thereby enhancing the flexibility of the entire licensing program. Notably, InterDigital has permitted Huawei to leverage its patented WiFi and High Efficiency Video Coding technologies on the latter’s 3G, 4G and 5G devices. The licensing agreement will be effective until Dec 31, 2023. Financial terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.
InterDigital’s commitment toward licensing its broad portfolio of technologies to wireless terminal equipment makers that allows it to expand core market capability, is noteworthy. Currently, it has many leading companies under its licensing agreement and expects to grow its licensing revenue base by adding more firms that have attained market prominence over the past several years. Impressively, it claims more than 32,000 patents in wireless and video technologies and 9,800 patents for 5G cellular data standards.
The company’s global footprint, diversified product portfolio and ability to penetrate in different markets are commendable. Apart from its strong portfolio of wireless technology solutions, the addition of technologies related to sensors, user interface and video to its offerings is likely to drive significant value, considering the massive size of the market it licenses.
InterDigital currently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). It has long-term earnings growth expectation of 15%. In spite of being committed to its objective of expanding revenue streams while controlling operating expenses, shares of InterDigital have lost 8.4% compared with the industry’s decline of 17.6% in the past year.

IN PART:
With the coronavirus pandemic leading to worldwide devastation, countless people have largely been confined to the safety of their homes to prevent exposure to the deadly virus. These have increased the dependency on wireless equipment providers like InterDigital, with digital sustainability becoming the norm of the day.
Additionally, more and more companies are offering the work-from-home option to employees to ensure their safety and well being. Several firms are also providing a secure and connected workplace setup through quick onboarding and enablement services to support the seamless continuity of businesses and enable employees to fulfill their professional obligations. With more cities going under lock-downs and the administration asking people to opt for home quarantine, the remotely working trend is likely to be in vogue till the pandemic subsides. This, in turn, is likely to create new revenue-generating opportunities for the company, as humans become solely dependent on the digital platform to stay connected not only for their professional lives but also for online education, shopping, dining and entertainment.

InterDigital Announces Collaboration With Anritsu to Test 5g Industry Verticals
GlobeNewswire•March 2, 2020
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/interdigital-announces-collaboration-anritsu-test-090010529.html
WILMINGTON, Del., March 02, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (IDCC), a mobile and video technology research and development company, today announced an agreement with leading telecommunications electronic test equipment maker Anritsu Corporation to collaborate on the development and experimentation of 5G industry verticals.
The collaboration is aimed at offering trusted test bed environments to examine the growing number of industry verticals that will shape future 5G growth. InterDigital and Anritsu have agreed to set the architecture of demonstration scenarios, share technical specifications related to the execution of joint demonstrations, share and integrate software and hardware into existing platforms for joint demonstrations, provide support for the implementation and promotion of joint demonstrations, and pursue expanded collaborations with additional participants and research programs.
InterDigital and Anritsu’s first joint demonstration, titled “5G Industry Verticals Test Bed”, provides a platform to evaluate device and application performance like throughput, latency, and signaling using an end-to-end 5G test bed operating in standalone (SA) mode and integrated with mobile edge computing (MEC). InterDigital contributed an immersive 360-degree media streaming service that leverages InterDigital’s 5G-CORAL mobile edge computing platform, which has been integrated with the Anritsu MT8000A 5G Network Simulator platform. The demonstration also includes MT10000A measurement equipment to test 5G timing and latency, which is critical in many Industry 4.0 use cases. The demonstration, initially scheduled for the now-cancelled Mobile World Congress, has been virtually presented on the Anritsu website, here.
“We are delighted with this first showcase of InterDigital’s video and edge technology over a 5G standalone platform from Anritsu,” said Dr Alain Mourad, Director Engineering R&D at InterDigital. “Over the next 12 months, we will be extending our collaboration with Anritsu to showcase InterDigital’s beyond 5G hybrid network slicing technology for Industry 4.0 use cases.”
“This first step of our agreement with InterDigital, to produce the test bed and initial use case, has shown the powerful collaboration we have together. We are excited to extend this work, and bring to the industry further testing expertise and knowledge for the more advanced use cases of 5G in network slicing and Industry 4.0,” added Jonathan Borrill, Head of Global Market Technology at Anritsu.
InterDigital and Anritsu have outlined several additional areas of engagement for their collaboration. The companies have agreed to work together to integrate InterDigital’s demonstration of Hybrid Network Slicing with Anritsu’s 5G Network Simulator platform, and are preparing a joint showcase of their integrated vertical applied to a tele-operated driving (TOD) use case. InterDigital and Anritsu have also agreed to implement a trial campaign to gather data insights of 5G network characteristics and are currently exploring expanding their collaboration to include additional participants.

US brings new charges against Chinese tech giant Huawei
ERIC TUCKER
,Associated Press•February 13, 2020
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/us-brings-charges-against-chinese-182813663.html
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has added new criminal charges against Chinese tech giant Huawei and two of its U.S. subsidiaries, accusing the company in a plot to steal trade secrets from competitors in America, federal prosecutors announced Thursday.
The case comes as the Trump administration is raising national security concerns about Huawei, the world's largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, and is lobbying Western allies against including the company in wireless, high-speed networks.
The new indictment brought by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn adds to the legal woes in the U.S. for Huaweiy, which already faced bank fraud charges in that district and a separate trade secrets theft in federal court in Seattle.
The latest allegations accuse Huawei of plotting to steal the trade secrets and intellectual property of rival companies in the U.S. In some cases, prosecutors said, Huawei directed and provided incentives its own employees to steal from competitors by offering bonuses to those who brought in the most valuable stolen information.
The company also used proxies, including professors at research institutions, to steal intellectual property, prosecutors said.
A lawyer for Huawei did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

How InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) Can Impact Your Portfolio Volatility
Simply Wall St

IN PART
If you own shares in InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) then it's worth thinking about how it contributes to the volatility of your portfolio, overall. In finance, Beta is a measure of volatility. Volatility is considered to be a measure of risk in modern finance theory. Investors may think of volatility as falling into two main categories. The first type is company specific volatility. Investors use diversification across uncorrelated stocks to reduce this kind of price volatility across the portfolio. The second sort is caused by the natural volatility of markets, overall. For example, certain macroeconomic events will impact (virtually) all stocks on the market.
Some stocks mimic the volatility of the market quite closely, while others demonstrate muted, exagerrated or uncorrelated price movements. Beta can be a useful tool to understand how much a stock is influenced by market risk (volatility). However, Warren Buffett said 'volatility is far from synonymous with risk' in his 2014 letter to investors. So, while useful, beta is not the only metric to consider. To use beta as an investor, you must first understand that the overall market has a beta of one. A stock with a beta below one is either less volatile than the market, or more volatile but not corellated with the overall market. In comparison a stock with a beta of over one tends to be move in a similar direction to the market in the long term, but with greater changes in price.

Apple (APPL) wants you -
to have a cheaper iPhone in your back pocket, that is.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company is prepping to roll out a new, lower-cost iPhone as it looks to retain its edge in the global smartphone marketplace, particularly against Android-enabled devices, with its suppliers already prepping to begin production.
Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that Apple suppliers and manufacturers in China and elsewhere have already received plans for the new lower-cost model, and will begin assembling it starting next month.
The new iPhone, which will be similar to the company's SE model that it released in 2017, could be officially unveiled as early as March.
According to reports, the new model will have a 4.7-inch screen and Apple's older thumbprint recognition technology.
Apple is planning a slew of new high-end iPhones for release later in 2020 that include 5G connectivity, faster processors, and new 3-D cameras on the back.
A lower-cost version would serve not only those who don't want to shell out $1,000-plus for a new piece of hardware, but in other markets where its higher-priced phones don't sell as as well.

Apple reportedly working on satellite technology for direct wireless iPhone data transmission
Apple is said to be working on satellite technology,
having hired a number of aerospace engineers to form team along with satellite and antenna designers, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The report notes that this is an early-stage secret project that could still be scrapped, but that the purpose of the team and its work is to potentially develop communications satellite technology that can send and receive data directly to user devices, including the iPhone, in a bid to make it possible to connect Apple devices without the need of a third-party network.

The Leahy–Smith America Invents Act (AIA)
is a United States federal statute that was passed by Congress and was signed into law by President Barack Obama on September 16, 2011
Opponents of the Bill
contended that it will lead to results similar to other nations' patent systems on which the bill is modeled — market incumbents will become further entrenched, the rate of startup formation will fall to levels in other countries, and access to angel and venture capital will fall to the levels of other countries, as described in the Impact of the Changes section below. A startup that relies on patents for protection from competitive risk, would, under the AIA, lose the protections of the previous regime to assemble the capital, strategic partners, and time for R&D and testing. The startup, exposed to the risk of copying by an established player in the marketplace, will be unable to attract venture capital, and so will lack the financial resources necessary to commercialize the startup's invention and grow the company. The weakening of patent protection diminishes incentives for investments and development.
In addition, opponents of the bill
pointed out that the proposed revisions create greater options for accused infringers, and weaken the rights of patentees, and that patent reform should remain in the hands of the court system. Opponents argue that patent reform should be confined to administrative reforms at the USPTO.[24] The time, effort and money that will be spent after issuance under the AIA on inter partes review and post-grant review would be better spent improving initial examination.
According to patent attorney and reexamination specialist Taraneh Maghame, "the root of the problem trying to be addressed by the reexamination process could be better solved if quality patents are issued in the first instance."
