It's scary....
how much AAPL seems to depend on the iPhone (at least in the media).
Many pundits have forgotten how well the mac has been doing, taking market share etc. It all sounds like a crap shoot riding on iPhone's sales and performance.
But in the meantime, it's been giddy fun getting paper rich.
GO AAPL !

tomm, I've loved Evora for years
Also, many things put out by "Putumayo Presents" are great. I love "An Afro-Portuguese Odyssey" in particular. If digital was like the old vinyl, the grooves would be gone by now.
Tex, re music streaming
I've posted this before and sound like a tout for AOL, which I am not. I don't particularly care for their usual way of doing business, but AOL Radio is a great way to get free streamed music: a huge variety of musical genre, including these Latin stations, Amor, Bossa Nova, Grupera, Jazz Latino, Reggaeton, Ritmo Latino, Rock Latino, Sabor Cuban, Salsa, Tropical and Tus Favoritos. For streaming, the interface is better than iTunes. It shows the song titles, time, and flashes the album pic across the screen.
This is from their "read-me" which downloads with the free application:
"The AOL Radio application lets you listen to the AOL Radio Featuring XM channel lineup. AOL members have access to the full station lineup with both broadband high quality streams or the dial-up streams. An AIM screen name can get access to the same narrowband streams that are available in the HTML player on aol.com.
"Requirements:
This application will only launch on Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later. (Mac OS X 10.2 and then apply the OS Updates to get Safari installed)
"Notes:
• AOL Radio allows you to indicate whether you are using a dial-up or broadband connection. Selecting "Dial-up" will cause the application to play the lower bandwidth streams, which will work over a dial-up connection.
• AOL Radio does not support setting your iChat status on Mac OS X 10.2. For this feature to be available, you need to be using Mac OS X 10.3 or higher.
• AOL Radio will honor your http and https proxies from the System Preferences. The audio streams will be pulled through the http proxy, so that proxy must be able to support unending http streams. If you are using a software firewall that works through these settings, you may encounter problems playing radio streams.
Changes since Radio 1.0:
• Radio is now a Universal Binary to support both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.
• The song change notification window is now draggable (click and drag the album art).

OT- Bootz, congrats on ur Spurs
I was rootin for the Suns. I love Steve Nash's style of play, but the Spurs were a more disciplined club and were just too good. I do hope though that a Piston or two gets shoved up Bowen's butt if Detroit mixes with SA. He was hammering Nash without being called on it.
PS Nice pic, too, guy. :)0

OT-KCMW, I did post about HDR...
Tell me how the Casio 750 brackets exposures. I've done it only manually, repeating shot with varying exposures. The only thing I've seen on this camera is after-the-fact brightening or dimming, not multiple exposures at one time. I am curious as to where it is on the Casio.
BTW, I downloaded the open source HDR also, as well as the qt4 graphic user interface,(which is necessary for the open source HDR) and stopped there. I don't have a clue as to what that GUI is all about, so that's a project on hold til I can study it to see what I'm doing.

dill, I hope you're right
but again it really depends on the nature and extent of the alleged infringements. Since the burst and compression technology involved potentially deals with all kinds of audio/video compression, transmission etc, who can say what present or future Apple products will use it.
Yahoo, MarketWatch etc aren't giving it a lot of significance based on the limited stories so far, but maybe they don't understand the technology and law better than we do...
and I for one, understand squat, which I already mentioned to Tex :)0º
Tex, re the Markman
Have you or anybody actually read the Markman decision?
Is it basically like a motion for summary judgment in a patent case?
I scanned it last night and it's pretty opaque to me. The judge interpreted lots of technical terms against Apple's interest but how crucial those terms are to Apple's position, I haven't a clue. It's unfortunate that nothing in the media gets to the heart of the matter (probably because techie people, or the lawyers in the case, who would really know what they're talking about, have better things to do than post to the web. So the pundits talk and spin generalities....depending on which team their interest lies.
If anybody understands the technology well enough to venture a clue, you can download the pdf at http://news.worldofapple.com/ about a quarter of the way down the page.
(I don't know if you can easily attach a pdf to a post here in IHub)
OT- Bootz, sorry me bad

Stock options an issue at Apple's annual meeting
http://tinyurl.com/22lqva
I voted for the SH proposal #6 against the recommendation of the Board. I like the idea of putting restraints on the issuance of options.
"A group of activist shareholders has put a proposal on the company's proxy statement. The proposal calls for the company to set grant dates for stock options during a given fiscal year ahead of time. It also mandates that options granted to senior executives be given an exercise price that is equal to the average opening and closing prices of Apple stock on the day that the options are given.
The proposal is sponsored by New York-based Amalgamated Bank LongView Collective Investment Fund and the Connecticut Retirement Plans and Trust Funds, of Hartford, Conn. The two funds own a combined total of about 796,000 shares of Apple's stock.
"In our view, corporate efforts to game the timing of options can distort a core purpose of options, which is to motivate executives to improve long-term performance for the benefit of all shareholders," the proposal read."
Apple says in opposition:
Apple is opposing the measure. In its proxy statement, the company argues that the proposal is unnecessary and doesn't apply to Apple's current equity-compensation practices. The company also pointed out that it hasn't granted any options to senior management since 2003, using instead restricted stock grants that don't have an exercise price.
"Even if Apple decides to grant stock options to senior executives in the future, the Board believes that the proponent's restrictive approach is not necessary to protect the interests of Apple shareholders," the company wrote in its proxy."
In other words, trust us.
Nah, slap me once, shame on you. Slap me twice, shame on me.
Eric, please enlighten us on BURST news
I note BRST had a nice pop today, but AAPL didn't seem to notice. Care to be a little more specific about the big news?
We've heard about how devastating it's going to be for Apple since BURST won a nice bundle from MS. Is there anything new, or is it wishful thinking on your part?
Blue, not a bad little stake
for the little guy.
As for the possibility that iPhone fails to meet expectations, it'll hurt bigtime,(but not be fatal) and we won't know much until after the fact. At that point, as I've said many times before ad nauseam, I'm not smart or nimble enough to time it well.I've lost ground trying to time Apple and many others over the years.
So, for me personally, the time to get out is now if I thought the iPhone wouldn't meet expectations. But I feel it will be a success, and I'm staying the course with a pretty good piece of me on the line. I know it's irrational to think this way, but I feel I'm playing with the house's money. >;0)
I just love this company's prospects and products over all.
Famous last words.
Blue,
Although I first bought at 20.75 (two splits ago) in '98, which would give me a 20 bagger, I twice sold and bought back at a higher price reducing the net effect to a 12.74 bagger, which ain't bad.
What it taught me is I can't market time worth spit (a lesson that Tex has apparently learned too). It would take something very bad in this stock to shake me out again (like Steve's physical health or "SEC" health.)
roni, I smell another nice pop today 2
AAPL has slowly climbed out of the AH and pre-open deficit, and Hong Kong and Nikkei up nicely too.
AAPL is a fun ride.... lately
wonderful Apple design article, dill
I plan to read it again later. What a wonderful explanation of a big part of why we love Apple products.
of mice and men, thanks yofal
Sorry, I wasn't clear: I didn't want to open a new tab (with command T or you can customize and put the new tab button in the toolbar).
I want a new tab for another link, one button/one hand style.
But I just read a comment from Stridey at Camino that it's not possible w/o a two button mouse.
And thanks KC for the cheap mouse advice.
Dear Abby, will my affair with Camino last?
I've been playing with Camino for a few days and like it a lot but I can't seem to find a "one hand/one button mouse" way to "open a new tab". With Firefox, you can just click and hold to get context menus. With Camino, not so much, and nothing I've found in preferences allows it either. I'm too cheap to buy a two button mouse. I love my little Apple bluetooth one button baby for the while.
Thanks for your thoughts.
as to the split,spit
I guess it's hard for me to think of AAPL as bluechip without the old counterculture image. Besides perchance there's a disconnect between the cool Mac guy in the commercials and the suits who might be more inclined to buy a blue chip company.
But if AAPL keep going up in value, I'll take it either way, split or not....so much <º)
interesting question, Tex, re cap-size
apropos of your market "addressability" thought, I would hope a split is not too far away as it's looking pricey to the average Joe at prices above 100
The so-called leak of the ATT summer vacation memo must have been a factor in today's run-up. It sure does make it look that the iPhone will be out there no later than July...

Shareholder proposals at annual meeting this Thursday
I took a fast look at the proposals up for vote on Thurs, 5/10/07, and think I'll vote for the directors' proposals and against all the shareholder proposals EXCEPT Proposal #6, dealing with options backdating practices etc.
In principle I vote the Board a wide berth on such things as electing the Board members themselves, and employee/director stock option plans. Shareholder Proposal #6, which the Board opposes but has some large blocks of stock in support, attempts to curb Apple's options backdating practices which have proven troubled. The other SH proposals have small blocks of stock behind them and to my mind deal with things the Board can best decide.
Overall, the legalese is too long and technical in the Notice to give a full understanding of the issues without more time than I want to spend on it. So, in the absence of anybody here having something pithy and knowledgeable to say to the contrary, I plan to vote my shares in favor of Apple Board's recommendations and against the SH proposals EXCEPT Proposl #6 where I will oppose the Board recommendations.
Any thoughts welcomed. :<)

Aces hi
With MS earnings (and AH) up, along with Apple today giving back some of yesterday's AH euphoria, could we have an Ace sighting tomorrow? I hope so for some comic relief if not for contrarian indication.
It's a strange choice, tomm,
not that far away from Prince St, etc. I would think upper west side would give more diversity of location for the three in the city,...Soho, CPS & 5th Ave and let's say for example, 72nd and Columbus... But maybe it's some facility with a chic "abattoir" antique architecture to it that would appeal to Steve's aesthetic.
On a day like today, with the numbers Steve and crew brought in...whatever they want is cool with me. :<;)
thanks again, yofe
it's nice having you and your ingenuity with this stuff around :<)
Did you or anybody pick up anything that hinted, smelled or vibrated like any obstacle to iPhone gettin to market in June?
QT streaming was problem today
For the first time in a very long time, I couldn't get the conference call with the URL from the Apple site
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/earningsq207/
even with repeated relaunches ad nauseam. Then yofal gave me this "direct link", http://stream.qtv.apple.com/events/apr/earnings/earnings_07/earnings_live87.mov
which worked like a charm.
Can someone explain for the future how to get the direct link URL?
I went through a lot of frustration.
Thanks again, yofal, and anyone with some understanding of how this thing networks, please jump in.
