gilead23, I was wondering the same thing...and I think you're right. From looking at my brokerage site, it doesn't appear the Canadian pinks are trading today.
It's a bit hard to tell because my brokerage doesn't report volume on Canadian pinks until the end of the day, but the bid/ask are not moving with the Canadian market the way they ussually do....so I'm pretty sure they're not trading.
Do any other brokerages report real-time volume on the Canadian pinks?
daredguy, EZEN issued an annual results PR in early March and filed their annual report on 3/31 the last two years.....so I think the timing this year sounds like it's just about par for the course....and not necessarily a good sign.
But like you, I’m also wondering if there's isn't some other "good sign" out there that I'm missing that explains this recent break-out? ….or maybe some big money has just taken notice of the same old “good signs” we’ve been watching?
I do consider it a good sign that EZEN announced "InfoWorkSpace is taking part in the NCES assessment" in their most recent newsletter:
https://www.ezenia.com/newsletters/q1_2006.html
"Ezenia InfoWorkSpace is taking part in the NCES assessment and is excited by the feedback we've received from our customers. The assessment starts in February, and there has not been a date specified for completion. We would like to extend our thanks to everyone for their valuable input."
The NCES is a big DOD program to get all the DOD networks to use the same standards and to get them collaborating more between each other. EZEN participated in the pilot project last year called the Next Generation Collaboration System (NGCS)...and it's a good sign that they're remaining involved in the program as it evolves and scales up to a much larger program to be deployed across the DOD over the next few years.
...or maybe there's something happening with this FBI information sharing initiative?:
http://www.gcn.com/vol1_no1/state-local/21602-1.html
The bureau has adopted commercial data analysis tools to exploit the content of Scope. Some of the tools include the Chiliad Business Intelligence Suite from Chiliad Inc. of Amherst, Mass., which the bureau used to build its Athena Search System; ClearResearch from ClearForest Corp. of New York; RetrievalWare from Convera of Vienna, Va., and Infoworkspace by Ezenia Inc. of Burlington, Mass.
Note that the "VCF" mentioned above has been scrapped for the new FBI "Sentinel" program….and the FBI seams to be pressing pretty hard on IT spending this year:
http://www.fcw.com/article91886-01-06-06-Web
...and there's plenty of other little things out there that might suggest the use of IWS is growing.
Like this that just showed up last month from a random google search:
http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:CndCGrQ1w3YJ:www.acq.osd.mil/log/tp/aa_e/Impl_Plan_Appendix_upda...
"Quick Win Solutions. InfoWorkSpace has been installed on the NIPRNET to support ammunition planning. In addition, USTRANSCOM is working with the Services to build a web-based interface tool for Services to input their COCOM ammunition requirements, and provide visibility to JMC, COCOMs, Services, and others for planning and modeling; target date is summer 2006."
So in the end, I couldn't guess what “good sign” might be causing this recent run up either, but I think these are at least a few potential fronts for the company to continue to generate growth from in the long run. ….and us EZEN investors just have to be a bit more diligent to deal with the fact that Ezenia IR operates on the same “need to know” basis that their customers do.
EZEN earnings: daredguy, the word from IR is earnings will be out by the end of the month:
http://ragingbull.lycos.com/mboard/boards.cgi?board=EZEN&read=3994
smolton, I routing for you in the tournament! Since your PSL2 portfolio is overweight in EZEN, it resembles my actual portfolio much more than my PSL2 portfolio.
I think the obvious loop hole in that study is the fact that by conducting interviews with the living, they're eliminating a large portion of smoker and drinkers that die young of heart attacks and cancer before the effects of Parkinson’s have a chance to set in.
"Better to burn out than to fade away"???
MITK: Although the financials were a bit of a disappointment, the conference call seams to have succeeded in keeping the market looking forward to the roll out of the products from JH.
I sold out of the little position I had, but will keep it high on my watchlist for a good entry point a little later on down the road.
I don't see any sense in freezing it or trading it in this contest......the only hope I have of coming back into contention is to trade a winner for another winner....and freezing any short-term gain I might get before the contest expires.
Thoughts on THC:
Dude...I need to go get some doughnuts :)
MITK: The 10Q is out and I had to post it here since it no longer qualifies for discussion on the VMC board <g>:
http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/807863/000114420406006122/v034784_10qsb.htm
Revenue of $1.52M, loss of $0.03 for the quarter.
That ought to secure me last place in this contest tomorrow!
SSKILZ1,
I wasn't insulted....and "antagonistic" was a bad choice of words on my part....maybe "insensitive of peoples positions" would have been better?
I agree we are in the dark about earnings guidance....and if the company is not issuing guidance....I don't think anyone else could really make any accurate projections either.
Yes we have to look forward....and it's one thing to speak in general terms of "expecting earning to increase" or "expecting earnings to decrease" for given reasons. But I think it goes a bit too far when people create actual EPS numbers....then begin building layers of presumption about fair P/Es, growth rates, and fair values based upon their personal projections.
Please note that I'm not saying you do this....I think you keep your forward looks to general terms in a well-rationalized way.
Personally, I didn't expect INB to match their last quarter earnings....let alone meet some of the wild projections posted here....so I haven't been in that stock since 2003.
Sorry about insinuating you were an antaonist....I really didn't mean to....my vocabulary just failed me. I'm probably guilty of being more antagonistic than that with my posts about ARSD.....but I really have a distaste for investing with the Saudi oppressors that spurs the hatred for freedom that breeds terrorism. ....ooops...there I go again!
Good luck with all your investments!
SSKILLZ, INB never issued any guidance, so those earnings will only disappoint the individuals who created their own overblown earning projections....and the people who believed them.
While I never agreed with people creating their own earnings projections, I also think the whole "Timberrr" thing is a bit too antagonistic for this board? What happened to "I could always be wrong"?
INB is a stock that taught many of us here some lessons back in 2002-2003. Hweb loved it back when it was trading under $1 and posting good EPS numbers…..and it was a hot issue for us Value Microcappers on RB back then. But then they started announcing some new acquisitions….and it got a bit hard to understand what they were doing….and then the numbers began weakening….and many of the value micrcappers ran for the exits under $1. But then the stock proceeded to go to $15 without any semblance of value….and without many of the Value Microcappers.
Stay humble.....
Bob let us know what you hear!
Didn't someone once say "be greedy when other are fearful....and fearful when others are greedy?" I started my position Friday....and am looking to add more.
Ouch, my second day in a row of being at the bottom of the Daily Portfolio Performance Standings.....but I've used this weakness the past two days as an opportunity to initiate positions in HPEIF.pk and MITK.ob in my real portfolio....so I what's ugly for my pick six....is hopefully a good opportunity for my actual portfolio?
MITK.ob: Niles, "White Pine Capital LLC" filed a Schedule 13G on Friday showing they increased their position to 6.6% (984,900 shares).
I've been contemplating buying some MITK since I noticed them in mid-December; but have been waiting for a bigger dip in PPS…and have been toiling with just when to buy. Half of me wanted to buy before the next quarterly report....and half of me wanted to buy after....so as the report is to be filed Wednesday morning, I bought half a position today.
I had some hesitations because their revenues have been a roller coaster the past four quarters. But that being said, I'm impressed with how they've managed to continually make nice steady improvements to their bottom line even when revenues are down (albeit with some non recurring events).
I couldn’t guess if revenues are going to dip again this quarter or jump 20%? But from looking at the PR’s, it seams they’ve been increasing their business activity from Sept.-Dec.?:
http://www.miteksystems.com/content/news.htm
So I'll wait to see the numbers before getting more, but do think the next year or two will show some significant improvements as JH incorporates the technology into their products and sells those products:
http://www.harlandfinancialsolutions.com/NewsAndEvents/PressRelease_detail.asp?id=296
GLTUs!
SSKILZ, I'm pretty familiar with UGNE. I wouldn't be too inclined to get into it until the 4th quarter report is out of the way....or until they announce a milestone from GSK.
Their third quarter looked great with $0.09 EPS, but included a $4M milestone payment for the FDA approval of Fortical. Fortical is an osteoporosis drug (Salmon calcatonin) that is a biogeneric of the Novartis drug Miacalcin...which sold about $230M in the U.S. in 2004. But salmon calcaonin in general has a lot of competition from the big biphosonate drugs (Fosomax, Actonel, & Boniva). There's also a few generic salmon calcatonin drugs expected to be FDA approved relatively soon.....so that might be some competition as well.
On the positive side of Fortical, there's some debate that those biphosonates increase a form of bone cancer (Osteonecrosis)....and that might lead to Fortical gaining more market share eventually.....but this is nothing more than a wild card at this point IMO:
http://eastbay.backpage.com/services/classifieds/ViewAd?oid=oid%3A95613&name=health%2Fwellness%2....
My opinion here probably also reflects my reduced risk tolerance in the current market climate.
beigledog, here I come, makes some room down there, lol! My six are sinking faster than a lead brick. Not all of them, but UGNE and HPEIF are showing 10% and 20% losses respectively today....ugh!
SYNI: I couldn't find the webcast on the Green Baron site, so they sent me this link:

Dumb Tax Question(s)?
1.) Do stock options trades belong on Schedule D with stock trades?
2.) This is the first year I've made a capital gain (as 2000 gave me plenty of tax loss carry forwards). After starting my taxes today, I'm a bit surprised by how big my tax bill is looking. How do you guys manage this? Can you have your brokerage withhold tax on profitable trades? ...or do you need to file quarterly estimated taxes?
Thanks for any help.
oilman, is there a pink sheet or ADR traded in the U.S.?
SYNI: .55/.56, 38M O/S, ~8M float.
I took a small speculative position in the stock last week because the company has some hydrogen generation technology and some other alternative energy technologies.....and it seams they're ready to turn on the PR machine with their coverage from the "Green Barron".
Quite honestly, at this point, I'm not sure if the focus of the company is on their hydrogen machine or their PR machine, but in this climate for alternative energy stocks.....I think the PR machine should at least work for a bit?:
http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/060210/0109387.html
High Plains (HYE.V, HPEIF) - CrocHntr, while waiting another day could have saved me another 5% on my buy, I felt pretty safe dipping my toe in the water around C$1.30 are for a few reasons:
1.) The recent financing includes 5M shares at C$1.20, so I think that may be a fundamental reason for HYE to find some support around here.
2.) The stock has retraced approximately 45% of it's move from $0.71 to $1.68 and is sitting near its 50 DMA, so I think that may give it some technical reason to find support here.
3.) Last but not least, I believe the company could be worth a lot more eventually if they execute their plan with moderate success. Having completed the Powermax acquisition and the recent financing HYE has about 23M OS (giving HYE a market cap of about $29M). They exited 2005 with production of about 800 BOE/d, they have about 1.1M BOE proven/provable reserves, and 250,000 undeveloped acres to explore.....which could lead to significant increases in their reserves eventually…..with a little luck.
So I'm glad to see you felt safe getting your feet wet here too....I hope we don't need to wrestle any crocs in here! :)
I only came across HYE when I was scrambling to find my 6 pack for PSL2, but didn't buy any then because I suspected it would come back to me eventually.
Good luck to us....and Bobwins of course!

SYNI: Syngas International to Unveil PyStR Technology at Big Hydrogen Show on Feb 13, 2006 in Calgary, Alberta Canada; Webcast With www.TheGreenBaron.com Also Available on Monday With Further Commentary on Alberta Oil Sands Project
Friday February 10, 9:00 am ET
LAS VEGAS, NV and EDMONTON, AB--(MARKET WIRE)--Feb 10, 2006 -- Syngas International Corp (OTC BB:SYNI.OB - News) -- www.syngasinternational.com -- is pleased to report that, in conjunction with a leading developer of oil sands extraction technology, its gasification technology played an integral part in a revolutionary new extraction method. This method shows a significant increase in yields of usable synthetic crude extracted from the Alberta Oil Sands. These smaller scale tests were conducted on a trial basis in a controlled environment. The combination of these two systems will provide a complete economical solution for tar sands recovery. The laboratory tests showed an increased yield of up to 15%. Larger scale tests are planned soon, to be followed by field tests.
In further studies, Syngas International has determined that its proprietary PyStR (pronounced "Pie Star") technology can aid in the efficiency of producing synthetic crude from the bitumen mined from the Alberta Oil Sands by providing producers with low cost "green hydrogen." The savings have been projected in the 50% range. Hydrogen is required to upgrade crude bitumen to synthetic crude. An average of 3kg of Hydrogen is required to produce one barrel of synthetic crude, at a present estimated cost of $7.00/kg. Millions of kilograms of Hydrogen are used in the oil sands on a daily basis, allowing PyStR to provide a savings of millions of dollars per day to large operators.
Syngas International is presenting its PyStR technology to industry and government executives within the oil patch and academia on Monday, February 13, 2006 at 1:45pm in Calgary Alberta, Canada at the Big Hydrogen Show co-sponsored by the Canadian Hydrogen Association and EnergyInet.
Robert Klein, CEO of Syngas International commented that the technology could lead to great achievements in lowering the cost of oil sand extraction, the major obstacle preventing mining over the last 30 or so years to any significant degree.
Alberta's oil sands contain the largest known reserve of oil in the world. An estimated 1.7 to 2.5 trillion barrels of oil are trapped in a complex mixture of sand, water and clay, with recoverable reserves estimated at 175 billion barrels, second only to Saudi Arabia.
The Company is also pleased to announce that it will conduct an exclusive CEO Webcast with The Green Baron so that SYNI shareholders and the investment community can learn more about the current and future prospects of Syngas International Corp. The webcast will be conducted by Evergreen Marketing, Inc. and their subsidiary TheGreenBaron.com and will be available for listening on Monday, February 13, 2006 at www.TheGreenBaron.com. An exclusive profile of SYNI is now available at this website.

EZEN: Ezenia released their newest newsletter this morning:
https://www.ezenia.com/newsletters/q1_2006.html
There's some good stuff in there...they've been nominated as "Best of Breed" by the Army....and they're participating in the NCES….the big program to expand the use of collaboration services across the DOD.
I'm thinking the involvement with the NCES could be the reason for the recent boost to the share price?
OT: EP,
First I should say I appreciate and respect your opinion....and I don’t mean to offend anyone with my posts here.
I'm commonly told I "thinking out loud" too much in conversation....so perhaps that carries over to my message posting?
As for any recent clash between us, I really didn’t mean to start any friction, but I guess it originated when I replied to gigem77’s question (msg. #18900): CPTC announced their first sale to China. The stock has been moving up, probably as word leaked. Any ideas on how far this could go?
Since the question was parsed with fundamentals, I replied with my thoughts of the fundamentals, since I was looking at it myself after reading the news....and had formed an opinion why that news wasn’t a good impetus for a break out. Then you responded to me with a comment about funny mentals causing me to “lose major money” on CPTC. Then I just had to state the obvious that it was only an “opportunity cost” and not any “real loss” if I wasn’t in the stock…..and like the quote from Buffet said….if no one’s calling strikes…you can watch pitches all day.
I really meant no offense by any of it.
I also didn’t mean any offense by my post about GV today either, but could see where you might have thought it was being sarcastic. But I was speaking from experience of doing DD there, one could easily get bogged down with the fundamentals of the Florida Real Estate market…as the hundreds of posts with dozens of opinions on The Value Microcaps board would suggest.
BTW, I’m not just into “value” stocks. Remember BIPH, lol!
That SYNI isn’t a value stock either…it’s one of the more speculative ones I’ve entered lately. It’s a “looked like a bottom to me…..and with a presentation coming on 2/13….I’m thinking it’s probably gonna go up” sort of play. But I didn’t mention it here yesterday when I bought because I’m really not too comfortable with their fundamentals….since the CEO is also the CEO of AVLN…..and this company has some other strange ties to PTII that I don’t completely understand. So I didn’t mention it because I generally try to avoid touting companies that I fear could be brought back to me in a year to make me look like a fool (like I always enjoyed doing to “terp” on the RB BIPH board with his former touts).
As for shit going up and down, generally I agree, but I also look at what price I’m paying for my shit relative to other shit on the market….and try to avoid the real obvious cases where there’s a fan too close by....I've been downwind of the fan a few times in my days....and it's never any fun.
HPEIF.pk I FINALLY got some shares!!! I've had orders in the past few days....but have not bid the ask price....as that's usually at least a couple percent higher than the Canadian price. Probably the only reason I got filled today was because the ask in Canada dropped below my bid on the pinks.....but I'll take what I can get.
This being my first buy of a Canadian pink sheet equivalent, this buying experience has been horrendous......it's like being a blind person at a silent auction.
Doing DD at Sedar hasn't been much easier.
Now I know 10bagger says we're going under $1 Canadian, but I just think he has a case of shareholder envy :)
OT: I know you don't want to get bogged down with fundamentals, but GV also has a big stake in a Florida property development:
Goldfield Commences Latest Luxury Waterfront Development in Florida
Tuesday November 22, 7:00 am ET
MELBOURNE, Fla., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Goldfield Corporation (Amex: GV - News) today announced that it has commenced construction of Pineapple House, a multi-phase residential condominium project in Melbourne, Florida.
Pineapple House is located in the heart of the Olde Eau Gallie Riverfront District. The first phase is an eight-story building containing 33 units. Most of these units are already under contract (with non-refundable deposits) at sales prices ranging from $450,000 to $1,500,000. This initial building is expected to be completed in mid-2007. Approval has been received for two additional buildings containing a total of 44 units, planned to be constructed on the two-acre Pineapple House site.
The units will feature a unique combination of luxury amenities, waterfront views of the Indian River, on-site parking, and easy access to the nearby residential, cultural, and commercial districts. The site is within short walking distance to stores and eateries, along with the local museum, library, civic center, several parks, and a community pier. Residents also will have quick access to the area's major employment centers, beaches, and major thoroughfares.
"We are very excited about the Pineapple House project, which will be unlike any other in the area. The new development will showcase the area's spectacular riverfront views and unique historic district lifestyle," said John H. Sottile, President of Goldfield.
Pineapple House is designed as part of a major redevelopment initiative in Melbourne's Olde Eau Gallie Riverfront District. The District's redevelopment committee is considering a variety of improvements, including a river walk, outdoor town square gathering area, improved parking, lighting and street beautification.
Funding for construction of Pineapple House will be provided from a $14 million secured bank revolving line of credit.

SYNI booshing.
SYNI: .54/.55....glad I picked up some shares of that the other day anyway. While I'm still not very comfortable with the legitimacy of the company.....I thought it looked like a bottom.
No, I wouldn't necessarily say that. But it does cause me to pause....as it parallels some of the less desirable companies I've invested in. So I was really just trying to get a sense for it myself.....and wondered if you had any thoughts about it.
FA, did you ever notice AVLN's CEO is also the CEO of SYNI? Do you follow SYNI at all? Have you ever talked to Robert Klein?
EP ~ If I used fundamentals alone, I wouldn't come here to ask your opinion on TA. So clearly, I respect your opinion on TA as well.
But like I said, I use fundamental to determine "what" to buy...and TA to determine "when" to buy....so I sometimes get my TA and fundamentals confused.
Sorry for posting off topic here.
EZEN: Skilz called that pretty well. Now there's a gap down.....hopefully that gets filled on a strong annaual report by mid-March.
EP re: CPTC: "The funnymentals will cause you to lose major money on CPTC."
If fundamentals keep me from buying a stock, they aren't going to cause me to lose anything (other than opportunity).
I like this quote from Warren Buffet: "I call investing the greatest business in the world because you never have to swing. You stand at the plate, the pitcher throws you General Motors at 47! U.S. Steel at 39! and nobody calls a strike on you. There's no penalty except opportunity lost. All day you wait for the pitch you like; then when the fielders are asleep, you step up and hit it."
BLLI: BioLok International Submits BoneGen-TR (Time Release) Product for FDA Registration
Tuesday February 7, 9:43 am ET
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BioLok International Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: BLLI - News), the manufacturer and worldwide distributor of leading-edge dental implant technology, today announced that it has submitted a 510(k) application with the Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") for the registration of claims to market its proprietary bone augmentation material, BoneGen-TR. BoneGen-TR is a time release calcium sulfate product that has been under development at BioLok's Orthogen Research Division and at the New York University College of Dentistry.
Calcium sulfate has been used for bone augmentation for many decades. A pure calcium sulfate product was previously approved for marketing by BioLok and has been in use in implant dentistry. Commenting on the limitations of traditional calcium sulfate, Dr. Harold Alexander, President of Orthogen, said, "Previous calcium sulfate products are sometimes resorbed too rapidly by the body, before full bone defect filling can be accomplished. It is consequently very technique-sensitive and is used mainly for filling small voids. Another common use has been as an adjunct to more expensive bone augmentation products to "stretch" the volume, reduce overall cost and enhance bone formation. BoneGen-TR is designed as a stand-alone product, to have a substantially longer resorption rate, and to cost significantly less than other materials in the market."
Bruce L. Hollander, BioLok's President, added, "Our strategy in developing BoneGen-TR was to have a unique and proprietary product that offers a number of significant advantages compared to other materials used in dental bone regeneration. Recently there have been recalls of potentially contaminated human source material and enhanced disease concerns (mad cow disease) with animal source material. Concerns about these materials offered by various other dental materials companies argue for the availability of a fully synthetic material such as BoneGen-TR; a fully resorbable product that has been demonstrated as safe and effective."
"Clinical trials to further demonstrate the benefits of BoneGen-TR are scheduled to start later this quarter," continued Mr. Hollander. "We are hoping to receive FDA clearance for the 510(k) and to begin commercial shipments of the product by the end of 2006. We are excited about the opportunity to enter another $1 billion market with our patented, proprietary product, BoneGen-TR. Upon FDA clearance, our rapidly expanding direct sales force in the United States and our international distribution channels will have two complementary products lines for tooth replacement and bone augmentation with distinct patent-protected technological advantages to bring to market."
According to Mr. Hollander, BioLok also intends to explore opportunities to market BoneGen-TR for uses outside of dentistry. The Company will soon implement initiatives to identify licensing partnerships to distribute its product for orthopaedic applications.
BioLok International Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: BLLI - News) is merging cell biology and technology to develop and market products for the dental implant and tissue regeneration markets. The Company is the worldwide manufacturer and distributor of the BioLok Precision Dental Implant System. BioLok offers a superior line of dental implants that incorporate many patented features and are synonymous with quality, fit of components, leading edge technology and design, and ease of use. Additional information is available on the Company's Web site at http://www.biolok.com.
sskillz, you don't think EZEN looks like it's under pretty heavy accumulation here? NITE's bid has absorbed a lot of shares the past couple days.
I've been in for a long time....and from much cheaper....so I intend to hold to see what the numbers look like...or if there's something more behind this move.
OT: SUPER BOWL MVP guesses, I was the only one who guessed Hines Ward for MVP! What was the prize? <g>
I just had a feeling....that guy shows up at every game ready to work his heart out....even at blocking and the other less glamorous roles of a wide receiver in the game. He isn't extremely tall or fast, but he's got incredible hands....and a work ethic and level of determination that I think is the epitome of what the Pittsburgh Steelers stand for.....hard working, humble, and happy folks!
Wooooooohoooooooo! Steelers!
Happy trails Bus....it's been a great ride!
OT: I've had an e-machines desktop for the past two years and have no complaints....and got a lot more for my money than I would have gotten from one of the bigger names.
Tiger Direct ussually has some good deals on e-machines and other computers too:

Edit: Actually the e-machines on the top of the Tiger Direct webpage looks like a pretty good deal.
The "initial listing standards" are different from the "continued listing standards":

yinser, just don't do your bottom fishing near Neville Island, lol!
I've got to cheer for the Steelers from Philly....but lots of Philly fans have come accustom to jumping on the Pittsburgh bandwagon during play-offs.....so we have some friends to watch the game with.
USLM looks like it could be a pretty safe play from here....but I'm looking for a little higher risk/reward opportunities in companies that "could be" in the early stages of emerging....in slightly sexier industries. My pick six reflects a few that are on my close watch list....EZEN is the only one I'm holding though.
GLTY!
I think Hines Ward is going to be a big part of the game....and make a few big plays....I'm going with a long shot and picking Hines Ward for MVP!
yins, SSK provideds a weekly update of individual stocks. The last time it was posted was post #821...or the post this is a reply to.
Yins goin to the South Side to watch the game? Should be a riot down there if Pittsburgh wins.....was the place to be when the Penguins won the cup in '93!
