DM,
What was the Yankees excuse? They played the same teams. The Red Sox were due to cool off. They have a tough series coming up this weekend too.
I have felt that we will be in good shape if we could hold the four game lead into the ASG, it may be a little tough, but perhaps the Rays will do the same to the Yankees this weekend.
I certainly hope so, Chacon is due to pitch Sunday when I am there.
Rays take third straight from Sox
5-2, Jason Johnson now 0-2 for Boston. The Red Sox bats have cooled off during the visit to St. Pete. The Rays have now won five of six against the Sox in the Trop this year.
Francona,
has a medical condition with his blood circulation that requires he keep warm. If you notice, he even does it on the hot days. He probably gets a health exemption.
Jason Johnson sucks,
4-1 Devil Rays in the second. This guy is baaaaaaaaad.
Peg,
I wasn't complaining, just reporting. :o)
Yeah, I don't think he is an answer either, just like it doesn't look like Jason Johnson is our answer at pitcher. Hopefully he does better tonight than Beckett or Schilling did, but I am certainly not holding my breath for a split of the series.
Yankees acquire outfielder
KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals announced outfielder Aaron Guiel was claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees today after being designated for assignment by the Royals on June 30. Guiel, 33, played parts of five seasons with the Royals from 2002-2006, compiling a .245 career batting average with 31 home runs and 117 RBI in 263 games. He hit .220 (11-50) with three home runs and 7 RBI in 19 games for KC in 2006. Guiel also spent 52 games at Omaha (AAA), hitting .249 with 11 homers and 32 RBI. His best season came in 2003 when he hit .277 with a career-high 15 home runs and 52 RBI.
Guiel, a 21st-round draft pick by the Anaheim Angels in 1992, was signed as a minor league free agent by the Royals on June 13, 2000, from Oaxaca of the Mexican League.
Back home,
well I had a great two games in St. Pete, other than the fact my favorite team lost them both. One a pitchers duel and one a late slugfest. As I have said before, give the Devil Rays some pitching and they will be hard to beat. The Rays have now won four of five at the trop against the Red Sox this year.
At least we didn't lose any ground to the second place team.
DM,
I wish the Mets had Kazmir pitching for them tonight!!
Kasmir pitches two hitter,
Pitched a heck of a game, Lugo made two errors and it didn't even faze him. One of the Red Sox two hits was a checkswing single.
A great game to see, even if the wrong team won. At least the Sox didn't lose any ground. :p
The Devil Rays have now won three out of four games against the Red Sox this year at the Trop. I guess I am lucky to be 1-1.
On to tomorrow and hopefully Schilling will beat old friend Casey Fossum.
Bill,
That is what I meant, imagine if they had an owner that didn't siphon off the income?
I gotta run, time to head for St. Pete! Have a great holiday everyone.
Bill,
I thought TFIC meant that Tribune Forever Indebted Cubbies.
A-rod,
was due after his awful month of June. Hopefully he is getting all his hitting out of his system in one game.
Congrats to the Yanks on winning the subway series.
Susie,
Schilling and Beckett will each have starts in Chicago against Ozzies team just before they play the ASG.
Glad to see Tek not make the team, he needs the rest and doesn't really deserve to go based on his offensive numbers this year.
There is talk that Manny may not go to rest his knee.
Personally i think they should just change the name to the Boston-New York baseball gala. There are a lot of deserving starters not in those two cities.
Wright serving up meatballs,
I can see why he isn't lasting over six innings. To many tosses outside and then serving up the high "get it over" fastball. If not for the base running blunder, this inning would be very ugly.
Chuck,
Sorry to hear about Scranton. They have many fine old homes and buildings downtown. I know with how hilly it is how fast water can move.
I am glad you were blessed.
Wow! Why didn't Valentin slide?
Chuck,
Yep, that is why they play the games.
How are things up around W/B? I hope you didn't see any damage. How did Scranton Fare?
Susie,
But the Red Sox are fifty percentage points higher than they were last year. If you look at the Yankees record at this point over the last ten years they are about where they have always been, but now there are a lot more good teams that they have to overcome. It isn't just the Red Sox. That is why they are in trouble.
They did not keep up with the elite of the league in interplay and before the season is over that will turn out to be a big thing.
Chuck,
I think the Yankees are in even tougher straights this year.
1) Matsui and Sheffield, first they have a major problem in that it is their wrists, Nomar and other have taken a couple of years before they were better, that is why I don't feel Wily Mo will be full strength either.
2) The next problem for those two is the timing of their return. It is likely they won't have the minor leagues to rehab in as those seasons will be coming to a close.
3) It is highly unlikely they can catch the lightning in the bottle they got last year. I think you can honestly see Small and Chacon's second half as a fluke that is unlikely to occur again.
4) We don't know about the Sox and the injury bug for the second half, but if the Sox injury report is no worse than the first half they will continue to do well. Teams with good pitching and great defense rarely slump for very long. The Sox do not have to overcome Schilling and no closer this year.
5) The Red Sox question marks, other than Foulke have worked out very well. Schilling is back on track for an attempt at twenty games won. Beckett has shown no sign of blisters and is also on track for twenty wins. Lowell has done what I expected him to do, be the top runner for comeback player of the year.
I know the Yankees have had injuries but so have the Red Sox. Coco was out for 50 games, Wells has been out, as have been several of their role players.
We talked before the season about the two teams depth, Boston has managed their injuries better, thanks to that depth.
As I said earlier, the Yankees have made to many late season recoveries to count them out, but it will take a lot for them to do it. The wild card, improved Red Sox defense, the schedule, Toronto all will be added hurdles to overcome.
I agree with Peg, pitching is a priority. The Red Sox need Clement and or Wells to come back. The Yankees need to see Pavano return, Dotel to recover and to see some consistency from Moose, RJ and Wright.
That said, the Yankees need something for the bottom of the lineup, 7-8-9 aren't scaring anyone right now.
Peg,
Thanks. If the Mets pull one out tonight it could be five behind.
One thing that suprised me, maybe not you, but while perusing nyyankeefans.com someone stated, and was backed up by others, that the Yankees were next to last in runs scored in the AL during June.
I know that they left a lot of guys in scoring position, epecially the past week or so, but that was shocking to me.
Do you think the Yankees should go for more pitching or more hitting or just take their chances the rest of the year? Many of the fans are saying to not trade Hughes under any circumstances and risk this year to save future years. That doesn't sound like most Yankee fans in the past, or was that just the newspapers?
I have seen a lot more comebacks in second halfs from the Yanks than I care to admit, but this year they look like they will have more to overcome than usual.
We shall see,
the yankees have inconsistant pitching and so do we. Toronto isn't quite the team the other two are, although they can make some serious noise if Halliday and Burnett can be healthy the second half.
I don't see the wildcard coming from anywhere but the Central. If Detroit plays only .500 ball the rest of the way they are at 96 wins. I don't see them collapsing with the pitching they have. Ditto with Chicago.
The Red Sox have the schedule advantage and for me, the biggest advantage is they have all these young kids getting experience in the big leagues this year. I figured they wouldn't see a lot of action until next season, so that is all a plus. Not only that, but pitching is at a premium and it will be hard to trade for quality at the deadline without giving up premiere farm hands. I don't think Cashman or Theo are very eager to do that.
The Red Sox have Nixon they could trade as well as Tavarez/Seanez and a couple of position guys on the farm.
The Yankees have Huges and Tabata and would be crazy to let them go unless they are within 2-3 games at the deadline and could get premiere help.
The Sox could use another starter if Clement or Wells can not return and a middle reliever or two. The Yankees need a lot more, all that the Red Sox need plus a corner outfield bat or two.
Games Played So Far
Red Sox 37 home 42 road
Yankees 42 home 36 road
Blue Jays 46 home 35 road
Games Played By The All-Star Break
Red Sox 37 home 49 road
Yankees 43 home 43 road
Blue Jays 46 home 42 road
2nd Half Schedules
Red Sox 44 home 32 road
Yankees 38 home 38 road
Blue Jays 35 home 39 road
2nd Half Head To Head Games
Blue Jays vs Boston = 8 games left
Yankees vs Boston = 9 games left
Yankees vs Blue Jays = 13 games left
Doing great,
he should be a no brainer for the AL all-stars assuming there is a slot available for another Red Sox player given the arcane rule that every team needs to be represented.
Red Sox tie Athletics
for best interleague record ever as they go 16-2 by beating the Marlins today. The win puts the Red Sox lead in the American League East at 4.5 games pending the results of the Toronto and New York games.
Papelbon gets his 25th save and Mike Timlin picks up the win. Jon Lester failed in his bid to go 4-0 as Julian Tavarez coughed up the lead in the sixth, giving up a Home Run to Miggy Cabrerra, tieing the game at three.
David Ortiz committed his first error of the season dropping a foul ball at the Marlin's dugout, but atoned for it with his third home run in two games.
The win is Boston's fourteenth in their last fifteen games.
Dew,
Well he could of done it a couple of years ago, I am not so sure now. I guess it was a pretty lame comment because a lot of people could say that about their pitchers, but...
This year he has seemed to get a lot wilder about the sixth inning or so. In the past it seemed his wildness was more random if you know what I mean.
I think his back is still bothering him.
Even if he could go every other day for five, imagine how the bullpen would be at the end of the year. 8O
If Tito would only pitch Wakefield five innings a game,
he would have one of the best ERA's in the majors. :(
Willis just made the Red Sox mad,
Manny Ortiz has hit four home runs tonight. What a guy! ;o)
I am ticked off, the game was supposed to be on the Sunshine Network here in Florida and we are getting some Special Olympics rerun thingie instead. Bah!
Red Sox errorless steak ends tonight,
in the first inning. Miribelli and A-Gon each commit one on throwing errors. Sox up early thanks to a three run homer by Manny and a solo shot by Ortizzle. 4-1 Sox heading into the bottom of the third.
This is the Time for the Yankees
to make their move, if they are going to.
From July 3 until Aug. 1, the New York Yankees have only nine games against teams with winning records (as of standings of June 28).
Peg,
Maybe he forgot his Orange Juice at breakfast? ;o)
Peg,
1st D Wright doubled to deep left, J Reyes and P Lo Duca scored. 2 0
3rd A Rodriguez singled to left, J Damon scored, D Jeter to third, J Giambi to second. 2 1
3rd J Posada grounded into double play, second to shortstop to first, D Jeter scored, A Rodriguez out at second, J Giambi to third. 2 2
4th R Castro singled to left, D Wright and J Franco scored, C Woodward to second. 4 2
4th J Reyes singled to left, C Woodward scored, R Castro to third, J Reyes to second advancing on throw. 5 2
4th P Lo Duca singled to left, R Castro and J Reyes scored. 7 2
6th E Marrero homered to left. 8 2
Peg,
I have it up again. Yes Johnson is still in the game but Eli Moreno just went upper deck to left field. He is over 100 pitches. No biggie, I will go to ESPN or somone to get a game summery to catch up on what I have missed.
Thanks anyway.
sskillz,
I have been reinstalling drivers for my tv card. How have you guys scored? It was 2-1 and now 7-2.
Sometimes I am not happy with ATI.
Thanks and I hope the Mets do well the rest of the weekend!
Congrats Yankee fans on your teams win tonight,
a one hitter, very nice. Mussina has looked much better his last two starts.
The Red Sox lost as you all know, Jason Johnson was horrible, especially the first two innings. The good news is the Sox continued to play error free baseball and the bullpen did not allow any runs. Hopefully Wake can start another win streak.
Matt restored my post to Susie and asked that we try to stay on topic. I am very willing to do that and hope that we can let the past stay in the past and enjoy each others knowledge without the personifications in the future.
Soxfan,
Everyone loves Coco!!
Half of Cleveland threatened to move to Canada after Coco was traded, the other half believed the Marte hype and is patiently waiting.
;)
Chuck,
What Red Sox board are you alluding to? I have not seen anything negative written about him on any Red Sox boards, he is a fan favorite and many of us know that once he is accustomed to playing again he will be better than Damon, especially two or three years from now when a certain team will lament that they have another Bernie Williams.
Please provide some links, thanks!
Sox Fan,
I am thinking of two of them, one is a little fuzzy. To me the number one catch in Fenway Park was Dewey taking a Homer away from Joe Morgan by reaching into the bullpen during the 1975 World Series.
The other one and I am fuzzy on who or when it occurred was a diving catch Fred Lynn made when he planted his face in the Center Field lawn while running full speed toward home plate.
I am happy for Coco and the Sox and it was a big play given their streak, but for sheer value I will take Dewey's catch. It is hard to top one in the World Series.
I never saw the one you allude to, but that had to be a spectaculer catch.
dm,
Do you seriously believe that? I don't. I know some Yankee fans felt foolishly that Pedro gave the Sox game two as appreciation for all his times in Boston and the Mets allowed the sweep to get at the Yankees.
Both sound pretty dumb to me. No professional team or player is going to be embarressed just to stick it to a rival. Not even on the last day of a season.
I agree,
but it is still funny what happened. The cheer has caught on elsewhere despite the crassness of it. I hear it at times in Tampa, I am sure George just loves that.
Something really funny last night,
After Beltran hit his home run in the sixth, the suprisingly vocal Met fans started a let's go Mets cheer, they were naturally responded to with Let's Go Red Sox, but the Met fans were strong in fighting the cheer. So what do the Sox fans do?
They start a Yankees Suck cheer which the Mets fans immediately joined into with them. That ended the shouting match as they united in their common dislike of that other New York team.
Even fans on nyyankeefans.com were dismayed at that. LOL They thought the Met fans were stupid for being suckered so easily (pun intended).
