Hip-hop venture looking to set up shops here
YOUTH | Sites would teach teens about economic development
June 22, 2007
BY CHERYL V. JACKSON cjackson@suntimes.com
A hip-hop teen hangout concept is headed for Chicago, with a social activist leading the way.
Benjamin Chavis took the helm this month of New York-based H3Enterprises Inc., which promoted itself as being the first publicly traded hip-hop company and plans to develop a worldwide chain of HipHopSodaShop locations providing places for teaching youth about business, while offering a menu of healthy foods, cybergaming, merchandise and hip-hop music.
After a two-year delay, the first spot is under construction in St. Petersburg, Fla. Negotiations are in the works for the real estate for a shop in New York. And Chavis is in Chicago today to look for leads on potential Chicago area locations.
Shops in the Loop and on the South Side are a given, said Chavis, who is meeting with youth and hip-hop community leaders, commercial real estate agents and business players.
"We're looking for opportunities to invest in developing communities," said Chavis, former CEO of the NAACP and president and co-founder -- along with hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons -- of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network coalition of artists and recording industry executives. "Our concept is how to inspire, promote and sustain economic development.
"We're going to teach young people about economic development."
The facilities will range in size from 6,000 to 12,000 square feet.
"This is a combination of the best health food, video gaming and the best in wholesome hip-hop music," he said.
H3 also owns BG7, an energy drink endorsed by Chicago Bull Ben Gordon and being tested in Chicago. http://www.suntimes.com/business/439073,CST-FIN-hiphop22.article

HipHopSodaShop to serve as youth business school
Former NAACP head Benjamin Chavis plans to open the first of many HipHipSodaShops in St. Petersburg to teach hip-hop youth about business, investment and social responsibility. BY PAUL SWIDER
St. Petersburg Times
A plan to make St. Petersburg the launching pad for a new hip-hop concept is getting a boost under a new boss with national clout.
Benjamin F. Chavis, former head of the NAACP and longtime social activist, has taken over as chief executive of H3 Enterprises, the parent of HipHopSodaShop, which plans to open its first store of a worldwide chain in St. Petersburg later this year.
The store will bring together hip-hop music, gaming and healthy food with an ethos of community investment. Chavis said several hundred thousand dollars will be invested in the location, without being more specific.
H3 hired Chavis and his firm, CEF Management, as the company's board gets serious about its novel business model. Pitching itself as the first publicly traded hip-hop company, H3 is planning to use HipHopSodaShop as a vehicle to promote sound business, teach investment to hip-hop youth and incorporate social responsibility into what Chavis describes as a unique business concept.
''This is a model development,'' said Chavis. ``We hope the rest of corporate America will look at this.''
Chavis is a co-founder, with hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, of the nonprofit Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, an organization aimed at recapturing the social consciousness of original hip-hop and using its popularity to bring about social change.
''For the last three years, Russell and I have been talking about teaching financial literacy to young people,'' Chavis said. ``This is the perfect teaching tool. We're going to put it into practice.''
After a career that started with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and moved up through the Nation of Islam, Chavis said he is now utilizing business concepts to promote cultural development.
H3 and HipHopSodaShop have garnered attention in the two years since the company was formed by 25-year-old Brian Peters and a partner. They've attracted notice from the hip-hop and sports communities but have yet to put a store together.
''If they really want to reinvent the soda shop and make it a cool, positive place for kids to hang out, that'd be great,'' said University of South Florida marketing professor Carol Osborne. ``But they really need to pull off a unique one.''
Chavis said the next location will probably be in Harlem. Stores are also planned in Jamaica, South Africa and the United Kingdom, among other locales. http://www.miamiherald.com/694/story/141547.html

Apr. 3 - Health authorities say seven people made sick by E. coli ate at the same Orange County Souplantation restaurant.
Most of those who tested positive ate at the Souplantation in Lake Forest on March 23rd or 24th.
Authorities have yet to determine the source.
The restaurant has been allowed to stay open after inspectors declared it safe.
Health officials are asking anyone who ate at the restaurant and has developed symptoms to contact a physician. Symptoms may include bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and a low grade fever.
In some people, especially children under the age of five and older adults, the infection can lead to a very serious condition affecting the kidneys.
