VUZIX STAR AUGMENTED REALITY GLASSES ARE ADOPTED FOR CONCEPT DEMO OF "CLOUD-ENABLED GLASSES" BY NEC BIGLOBE
NEC BIGLOBE has developed a concept demo of cloud-enabled augmented-reality glasses using Vuzix Corp.'s Star series optical see-through AR video eyewear. The system is connecting to the cloud and uses the built-in cameras and displays in the Star to connect that data to the real world. Applications, for example, can use face recognition to connect Twitter or Facebook users instantly with their Twitter name under the user's face while using the glasses as a very natural human interface. NEC BIGLOBE expects applications ranging from sports to hobbies, like skiing, snowboarding, mountain climbing and fishing. Being connected to the cloud can enhance these activities, for example, by helping the user identify fish and fishing techniques right on the river, to showing the user where his friends might be on the ski hill just by looking at icons that are geospatially correct inside the user's view through the glasses.
Vuzix’s vision for EMEA distribution
by Stuart Wilson, Monday 30 January 2012
David Lock, director of operations EMEA at Vuzix
"Video eyewear vendor Vuzix will look to further develop its regional channel at next week’s DISTREE EMEA event in Monaco. Distributors, retailers and e-tailers of volume ICT and consumer electronics (CE) from across the region use the event to meet both existing suppliers and potential new additions to their product portfolios.
“Vuzix is the leader in video eyewear and continously provides the customer with high end, fashionably styled eyewear,” said David Lock, director of operations EMEA at Vuzix. “The Wrap range provides users with the ability to watch 2D and 3D movies and music videos on a virtual large screen - when connected to a multitude of video out devices including mobile phones, Apple devices, portable DVD players and more.”
Vuzix also has a range of ‘VR’( virtual reality) eyewear which enhances the experience for PC gamers, enabling them to enjoy the additional features of 3D and head tracking allowing them to ‘step into’ the game.
“Vuzix’s augmented reality eyewear proposition enables distributors and resellers a unique opportunity to offer a product that no other vendor is providing,” continued Lock. “Additional resellers [that we recruit] in 2012 and 2013 will benefit from the award winning technology products that Vuzix is bringing to market.”
“We will use DISTREE EMEA to broaden our network of distributors and resellers across the EMEA region. We want to offer channel partners the opportunity to have a future technology portfolio of proven devices,” he added.
Vuzix already has significant channel reach for its products but sees additional growth opportunities in mainland Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
“The Vuzix proposition provides distributors and resellers with an opportunity to offer a unique range of products for consumers and specific vertical markets,” commented Lock. “Our commercial channel programme provides for acceptable margins, based on representation and certain volumes.”
“We now have a Vuzix trade presence in 42 countries supported by our business in the UK; we anticipate this will expand in 2012 in line with our resources,” added Lock. “In 2011, Vuzix revealed a major technology development partnership with Nokia, which provides an opportunity in 2012 and 2013 to bring to market a range of see through eyewear that will further enhance the use of augmented reality, virtual reality and consumer eyewear in a multitude of markets.“

LAS VEGAS , Jan. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Vuzix Corporation (TSX-V: VZX, OTC:BB: VUZI, FMB: V7X), award-winning manufacturer of video eyewear, is excited to unveil SMART Glasses Technology - Integrated HD display engines and waveguide optics that literally break the boundaries of conventional optics and display solutions. For decades wearable displays have been referred to as Head Mounted Displays because of their bulky size and odd appearance; primarily attributable to the displays and conventional refractive and or reflective optics that they employ. This older technology is limited by the laws of optical physics that result in form factors that are large, heavy, and practically impossible to make into fashion eyewear.

Now after years of internal developments and our recent licensing relationship with Nokia Corporation, SMART Glasses Technology is finally here. This amazing new technology starts with a compact display engine capable of hi contrast and brightness for outdoor use. The output is then relayed into a 1.4 mm thick polymer waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface which squeezes the light down the waveguide and then two dimensionally expands the image back into the user's eye, creating an image that is then mixed into the real world. And, all this technology neatly fits into the temples & lenses of a conventional pair of eyewear!
As the name implies, SMART Glasses are much more than just a wearable TV. Designed to work with SMART Devices that are typically connected to the internet, SMART Glasses are interactive and merge virtual information with the real world. They can be used at night or outdoors in full daylight.
Vuzix is planning a line of both monocular and binocular SMART Glasses for the Commercial, Industrial and Consumer markets. With integrated head tracking and options for multiple camera technologies Vuzix SMART Glasses can broaden the users' sensory perception across a greatly expanded light spectrum; additionally they can be used to recognize their environment along with their position in the real world, all-the-while recording and transmitting what the user sees.
From standalone solutions for night vision and first responder use to fully internet connected and geospatially aware devices for amazing Augmented Reality applications.
Look for Vuzix SMART Glasses technology initial release into the commercial and industrial markets by fall 2012.

Vuzix VR Manager 4 Enables 3D Headtracking

Vuzix VR Manager 4 Enables 3D Headtracking
Oxford based Vuzix Corporation, manufacturer of video eyewear, are rather excited as they've announced the long awaited launch of VR Manager 4. The software upgrade will allow Vuzix VR users to create extensions that add 3D stereoscopic video and head tracking support to many Direct X and Open GL applications and games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Vuzix tell us that Virtual Reality Manager 4 is the first software upgrade to put stereoscopic 3D video and tracker support in the hands of the end-user and gaming community and it means they are no longer reliant on game developers (or Vuzix) to create extensions that allow for head-tracking and 3D gameplay with their favorite titles.
“VR Manager 4 opens the door to immersive gaming in a way never before thought possible“, said Paul Travers, CEO Vuzix Corporation. “Consumers now have the power to decide what games they will play in 3D or with head-tracking and share the applications they create with the world.”
Vuzix’ VR Extensions Exchange will serve as an online community for uploading and downloading both Vuzix and Creator (user generated) Extensions. Community members will receive a free lightshield for uploading a new extension - an actual lightshield?
The VR Manager 4 will begin shipping with all VR compatible Vuzix Eyewear models and can be downloaded for free at www.vuzix.com/downloads.

" Last week, video eyewear maker Vuzix announced (pdf) that it has partnered with cell phone maker Nokia to produce the next generation of see-through near-eye display (NED) glasses. The glasses will use Exit Pupil Expanding (EPE) optics technology developed by both Vuzix and Nokia.
Vuzix, which has been developing display technologies for the military since 1997, credits itself with creating the consumer video eyewear market, which it did in 2005 with the release of the V920 glasses.
The V920s and other Vuzix products allow users to view media on a pair of glasses, which make it look as though they are watching a big-screen television. Unfortunately, the less-than-stylish look, high cost and relatively cumbersome feel of the Vuzix glasses have made a full-on breakthrough into the mainstream difficult.

"We believe that Nokia's EPE technology solves a long missing piece in the NED business for creating sunglass-style video eyewear," said Paul Travers, Vuzix President and CEO. He added, "Integrate this Nokia technology with Vuzix's advanced display engine developments with partners like Fraunhofer IPMS, and we expect to be able to offer the video glasses that Hollywood and Sci-Fi writers have only been able to imagine."

Vuzix Secures License to See-Through Optics Technology from Nokia
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Vuzix Corporation (TSX-V: VZX, OTC:BB: VUZI, FMB: V7X) ("Vuzix" or the "Company") announced today that it has entered into a technology license agreement with Nokia to develop and produce see-through waveguide optics for use in near-eye display (NED) systems (head mounted displays and video eyewear) based on Nokia's proprietary see-through (Exit Pupil Expanding) EPE optics technology. The agreement, combining Vuzix and Nokia technology, is expected to accelerate the development and introduction of new NED products to the market.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110518/MM04932LOGO )
Under the agreement, Vuzix will perform on-going research and development and is expected to manufacture and bring to market components and products containing the licensed technology. In addition, Vuzix will provide Nokia with access to its products and components which incorporate the licensed technology.
The see-through EPE technology has been developed and prototyped by Nokia over the past decade in various configurations. Vuzix believes that it has the potential to form the basis for sunglass-styled video eyewear, which could be manufactured in high volume and appeal to mass consumer markets.
Jyri Huopaniemi, Director and Head of the Nokia Research Center Media Technologies Laboratory said, "Vuzix' specialized expertise in video eyewear will be critical in driving the further development of EPE technology and ensuring its integration in new consumer products. We are excited to be enabling a new era of innovation."
