You are correct that in Canada we use Sponsoring Brokers to take a client to market; however, there are designated market makers on all exchanges. Although their presence is more pronounced on the ME and CNQ (which is the new exchange) the TSX and TSXV have specifically designated MM’s to assure a continuous two sided market, all CDN markets have them. The major difference here is that the MM’s are strictly regulated by RS and directly reportable to not only the exchanges but also their houses and the IDA/Provincial regulators. Semantics perhaps but correct none the less.
As for CMKX, what a hoot!

For those who may not know this: it's perfectly normal for a TA to give out information about shares outstanding. It is, in fact, part of their job. They'd only NOT release the number if they were specifically told not to do so by the company.
