Certification Proof?
Yes, I see the stock up a bit. But I have not seen one iota of any research. People have posted that BLTA is approaching Certification. They have been trying for over 15 years. What do you base those claims on? Do you guys have anything besides hype? Prove it. Please post your great research here.
You can look back here, I was Long before you, I am not a basher.
What do you guys have?

PRC 11th 5-Year Plan (Pipe Demand)
For those of you unaware, the People's Republic of China (PRC) is managing the growth of China by a series of 5-Year plans. The PRC is currently in the 11th 5-year Plan (2006-2010).
http://www.china.org.cn/english/features/guideline/156532.htm
The Blueprint contains 2 items of special interest to TTCM and their investors.
* Major Pipelines to Ease Energy Shortage in Five Years.
http://www.china.org.cn/english/BAT/160290.htm
* Tackle Water Issues. (Page 2)
http://www.china.org.cn/english/environment/144278.htm
When you look at China, common sense alone tells you that there is and will be huge demand for TTCM's pipes for years to come. The 11th 5-year Plan verifies and almost guarantees incredible growth for TTCM.

A Little USSE Humor
From RB:
Okay, this is whats up! The "Boss" is out of Natchez until Monday?
Anyone have a guess where he could be??? Most Likely:
1. He flew to the Dominican Republic.
2. He flew to Mason City, to supervise the move of the reactors.
3. He flew to California with his new partners.
4. He flew to Houston, to supervise the move of the reactors.
5. He flew to Princeton IL, to punch Radcliff in the mouth.
6. He flew to Minn. to punch PP in the mouth.
7. He flew to MA to purchase a building for reactors.
8. He flew to Florida to slap the ......out of Stanton.
9. He flew to Italy on vacation.
10. He never flew anywhere.
Actually, I think he is scheduled to be at The Expo till Friday.

Re: 9-Year History
Mr. Rodriguez himself, in the very letter he wrote, speaks of a 10-year relationship with Mr. Rivera. Read it for yourself:

I do not post hype. I post facts, figures, research and other Due Diligence. Deal with it.
I do not tell people when to sell like you do (which implies you buy). I share information and let them make their own decisions. Get used to it. I am not sure why you are so afraid of the truth.

USSE/Dominican Republic Connection
The growth of the Dominican economy remains significantly hampered by an ongoing energy shortage, which causes frequent blackouts and high prices.

John Rivera is well aware of the energy situation in The Dominican Republic. From his bio on USSE Website: "His accomplishments include developing a clean-oil process that converted pit oils to uncontaminated fuel; developing co-generation facilities in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Nicaragua; and leading the development of process technology to extract clean oil from contaminated sand in Kuwait".

Doubled Fertilzer Order
If true that is more good news. The amounts are small because he is having the Fertilizer tested, "The carbon ash product is undergoing additional testing in Virginia to validate whether the activated carbon within the fertilizer can adsorb toxins in the soil, rendering them inert, thus detoxifying the soil."
I was already sure that Mr, Garjian was still working on the Deal, but always nice to have confirmation.
Wow, I just read his post again, what an inspiration, it has to be one of the best posts ever written on this Board. Make sure you read this again:

Massachusetts Consortium Info
The Massachusetts Consortium
The Deal - A signed Memorandum of Understanding between USSE and Vegetable Energy Group, LLC d/b/a Vee-Go Energy; and E2M.org to form a green consortium to provide wholesale green electrical energy and generation plants to public and municipal electricity buyers throughout the state of Massachusetts.
http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/070123/0206435.html
Proposed # of BioFuel Reactors - Target is 400,000 to 550,000 Gallons BioFuel Per Day. 475,000 Gallons Per Day would require about About 88 Reactors. Longer term, duplication is planned to 5 other areas totaling 440 Reactors.
Timeframe - With the caveat that these are forward looking statements, yada, yada, yada, Vee-Go’s short to term goals (less than 17 months now) are to:
1. Formalize the Mass MOU and appoint the USSEC/SPC/Vee-Go/E2M entity formed per the MOU as the exclusive source of USSEC/SPC products in Massachusetts.
2. Determine the viability of the catalyst activated carbon in USSEC soyash as a potential detoxifying agent for several mycotoxins including vomatoxin, aflatoxin, deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 and others. Tests are now being conducted by a Virginia agricultural laboratory associated with CCC Feeds.
3. Test the viability of USSEC soyash as a coal replacement by determining combustion characteristics and the effect of phosphates on the catalyst now used in powerplant SCR scrubbers to mitigate sulfur and NOx emissions. Tests are now being conducted by a privately owned power plant in the northeast USA.
4. Establish the viability of USSEC soyash as a fertilizer for northeastern regional crops, including, but not limited to corn and tobacco. Tests soon to be conducted by local farmers and CCC Feeds.
5. Sign long term “pay or take” agreements with utility customers and attain a cash flow from the Massachusetts sale of Rivera green electricity, fertilizer, biofuel REC’s, and fertilizer REC’s in 2007.
6. Establish a biofuel plant in either Holyoke, Springfield or Westfield, MA producing at least 800 tons a day of fertilizer for sale at $.125 to $.150 per pound including REC’s and 400,000 to 550,000 gallons a day of Rivera biofuel at 10% below a mutually acceptable fossil fuel benchmark price such as the current NY diesel #2 barge price as listed on http://www.joc.com, plus associated REC income of $50 per megawatt hour.
7. Utilize the entire output of the above biofuel facility to supply several potential customers with whom I am in various stages of discussion and due diligence.
8. To import Rivera biofuel by RR tanker or preferably by barge to New Haven, CT to be delivered by existing jet fuel pipelines to Western Mass until our biofuel plant is up and running.
9. To continue in collaboration with Central Connecticut Cooperative Farmer’s Association, other farmer coops in the eastern US, a farmer owned corporation in Canada, and hopefully state and federal agricultural authorities to establish a family farmer initiative to grow biofuel feedstocks in the Northeast and eastern seaboard states. Initial feedstocks could include soybeans, corn, and canola. Purchase to be direct from farmer’s silos, price to be cost plus guaranteed profits for 20 years to purchase 80% of harvest, 20% of harvest to be retained by farmers for market rate sales if they desire, fuel to be supplied to them at $.99 per gallon adjustable for inflation over 20 years, electricity if under our control to be deep discounted, and discounted fertilizer to be provided by us.
10. To continue to work closely with Massachusetts elected state officials at all levels to create an alternative energy initiative that will shine as a beacon for other regions as it utilizes resources to be made available by the proposed and hopefully soon to be enacted Massachusetts Green Communities Act of 2007 at http://www.mass.gov/legis/HD4254.pdf
11. To inject $1,000 to $10,000 a day into the E2M Regional Economic Council to introduce E2M’s community conscious capitalism and create the community wealth that will establish, as a pilot region, the sustainable E2M economic model in Western Mass, http://www.e2m.org. This will result in the formation of inner city youth entrepreneurial programs, low interest loan programs, entrepreneur friendly venture capital investment funds, the launch of 500 or more new small businesses, the funding of social initiatives to create affordable housing, provide jobs and social support to returning veterans, break the cycle of poverty, address violence in the family, reduce hopelessness among the young, and help to revitalize American democracy as our Founder’s originally created it here in Massachusetts, the birthplace of American democracy.
Vee-Go’s medium term goal (two to five years) is to:
1. See the above duplicated in at least five regions in the Northeast US and Saskatchewan, Canada. (5 X 88 = 440 Reactors)
2. Fund programs enabling the University of Massachusetts-Amherst an agricultural land grant institution to conduct R&D on additional biofuel feedstocks such as crambe, flax, algae, chicken and horse manure, organic wastes, and other experimental organic materials.
3. Establish a small municipal electric utility next to a municipal wastewater treatment plant to research the cultivation of algae based organisms in municipal wastewater streams energized by CO2 emissions from electrical generation.
4. Fund current embryonic initiatives to augment traditional agrarian style crop production techniques with new technical agricultural growing techniques whereby life sustaining foodcrops are grown much more efficiently, organically, and year round in greenhouses with rigidly controlled atmospheres devoid of harmful insects and pathogens. By using USSEC biofuels to generate electricity for efficient, crop enhancing, full spectrum, lighting; greenhouse heating; crop fertilization; and by redirecting the CO2 from heater exhausts into greenhouses to increase plant growth rates, important foodcrop yields may exceed, by multiples, traditional techniques as crops flourish year round, 24/7, under glass while outside lands produce additional food crops as well as biofuel feedstocks.
Mr. Garjian States "I believe each of these goals is not only possible, but probable and I hope to exceed the indicated timelines"..
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=18612539

The Military Connection
Rather suddenly the U.S. Military has possibly entered into the picture with USSE. In the past JR has mentioned Military Testing but i suppose the re-emergence is mostly because Jerry Bloom is a representative from U.S. Military Procurement Department, who expressed extreme interest in the low heat signature attribute delivered in the Rivera Hydrolysis Pyrolysis Solution biofuel.
http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/070615/0267066.html

Untimely Switch
I am not sure if it was you or not, but someone just flipped out of USSE, into SSTP at .105 a day or two ago.
Ouch, whoever it was.
I must admit, I thought about doing that a few days ago, until I heard Stantons USSE shares were locked up.
Lesson learned, trying to get cute with USSE SSTP shares could backfire big time.
.
Re: Speckulater may I ask how long have you owned usse
I bought in January, so yes I am down. There is not much doubt about The Rivera Process, just the execution of management. That seems to be rectified in the last 2 weeks and moving forward.
Supposedly, bio chats with CEO JR periodically. He used to post here, but exhibited little tolerance for bashers and is now banned.
Your timing is much better than mine, Bravo.
.
Why Reduced O/S Matters
Retiring 225 Million is a big deal. The USSE "pie" stays the same, but there are now less pieces, so your piece of the pie is now more valuable. Shares were reduced about 15%.
Some have posted that the reduce O/S is no big deal. Decide for yourself. Here are 3 different scenarios of USSE stock price, the only variable is number of Outstanding shares. We were in Scenario 1, now are in Scenario 2, will be in Scenario 3 IF the other 225 Million shares of Stanton are retired.
Constants:
Profits = $50 Million
Price Multiple = 25
Scenario 1:
$50M / 1.5B shares = .033 Earnings Per Share
.033 X 25 = .83
USSE stock price = $0.83 a share
Scenario 2:
$50M / 1.275B = .039 E.P.S.
.039 X 25 = .97
USSE stock price = $0.97 a share
Scenario 3:
$50M / 1.05B = .048 E.P.S.
.048 X 25 = 1.20
USSE stock price = $1.20 a share
.
Re: A couple of things
So the Demo/Meetings did last until June 22. That makes sense because the Demo pictures were from Friday June 22. The longer the Meetings lasted the better.
U.S. Military presence. Exciting.
So we thought we had been waiting for a PR about the Demo for 5 days now. When in fact, since Meetings lasted until Friday, it has only been 2 days since. A reasonable amount of time for them to get ready for a PR.
p.s.
Ron9
Much thanks again for your valued efforts and willingness to share. When we meet sometime in Natchez, or even The Dominican Republic, I will gladly buy you dinner.
.
O/S Reduction Interesting Points
1.) O/S reduced from about 1.5 Billion, to 1.275 Billion shares.
2.) O/S might be reduced further. If Stanton loses the Dividend also, reduces another 225 Million shares.
3.) It is possible Mr. Stanton is owed $3 to $4 Million for money he already funded USSE.
4.) If Stanton only owns USSE , this might explain why there has been no mention of USSE in recent PR's, only SSTP.
5.) If Stanton and Rivera have been feuding, and funding stopped, this might explain some of the delays with USSE so far, expected funding unexpectedly stopped.
6.) The reason JR finally did this is because we have funding now! Stanton is not needed. More proof of BioCentric Funding.
7.) Those shares could have been used and sold by USSE, instead they are retired, Poof. Gone.
EXCELLENT NEWS!
.
Freedom Fuels Is Connected To BCEI/Core
Freedom Fuels is in no way connected with USSE. Get that through your thick head and please correct your continuous post about revenues. Your fabulous company does not have a JV,LOI or any other agreement with Freedom Fuels LLC nor will they ever according to my sources.
You need new sources. You are incorrect, yet again.
Your first statement is blatantly wrong. Your got lucky on your second claim, though wrong in meaning, it is technically correct. SSTP has a signed Joint Venture with BCEI/Core. The Mason City Freedom Fuels Plant is the Biocentric Energy Plant referred to. If you have a connection to BCEI/Core, you have a connection with USSE.
Jim Blair is the CEO & CFO of BioCentric Energy. Mr. Blair is also one of the founders of Freedom Fuels. This is from the USSE Website before it was removed, and the BioCentric Energy info was put on the Customers & Partners Page:
Jim Blair
CEO & CFO, Biocentric Energy
Jim Blair has been working in business restructuring for over 20 years and recently was the lead member of the team that constructed and commissioned the largest biodiesel plant in the U.S. Prior to joining USSEC, Jim was CFO and Project Manager of SoyMor, LLC, a 30 million gallon per year biodiesel company that produces biodiesel and other soy value added products. He was also one of the founders of Freedom Fuels, a 30 million gallon per year biodiesel company. At Freedom Fuels, Jim established the business plan, raised the necessary funds for plant construction, selected the process, developed procurement strategies, had responsibility for all personnel and facilities during construction and plant start-up, and negotiated commodity and biodiesel sales contracts with third-party vendors. Prior to SoyMor, LLC, Jim worked as a CFO of a 40 million gallon per year ethanol plant. Additionally, Jim has experience in the dairy, plastics and aluminum foundry industries. He has served on the National Biodiesel Board and participated in the Minnesota Governor's Biodiesel Task Force. After leaving the SoyMor project he partnered with Mike LoCascio and formed Core Ventures Renewable Fuels, a renewable fuels project development organization. Jim has a BA in Economics & Business from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN (1985) and a MBA from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse (2003).

Checking on Mason City
I am checking on the Mason City Plant. There is a possibility an honest error has been made. However, FreedomFuels does have a plant in Mason City, the project assisted by Core Ventures, built by NewMech, and engineered by SSOE.
Your credibility was shot when you refused to post pictures of the "Freedom Fuels" plant that you claimed to take. You thought it was safe to wait a week to post. However, I have not forgotten how you backtracked on your claims when challenged.
IF FreedonFuels is not involved with USSE, then why in the world did you drive to Mason City, Iowa to take your pictures of the plant, for no reason?
Post your pics!

http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=20760518
I used the term Potential Revenue Streams, because things can change, we do not know how these Deals will turn out. It should be noted that the MA Consortium Deal is a Memorandum of Understanding. The Illinois Biofuel Deal appears to be on hold. We have not heard anything official yet, but supposedly, they wanted $1.2 million from USSE for the plant site, when the land was only appraised for $200,000.

Re: 650M SSTP In USSE Treasury
with 650 million sstp shares in the treasury is not USSE's benefit two fold?
1. SSTP gets a contract, share prices go up USSE gains in that perspective.
2. SSTP i doubt that will be getting the fuel from USSE for free, any contract SSTP gets a substantial portion of that would go to buying the fuel from USSE?
Uggh! I was hoping someone with more knowledge of this than me would answer. I will take a stab at it, in hopes of starting an intelligent discussion of this topic.
You are totally correct about #1. SSTP closed Friday at .09, so that added a value of about $58M to USSE (645M X .09). I am not a CPA, but it seems like that could be included in USSE Balance Sheet as an Asset (sure not a Liability). The shares are Restricted stock, so probably a Long Term Asset.
As far as #2, we do not really have enough info to know exactly. When SSTP/USSE soon have SEC Approved Audited Financials, we will know a lot more.
My vision of a typical USSE/SSTP Trasaction might be:
USSE sells Fuel to SSTP for $2.60 a Gallon, SSTP sells Fuel to Customer $2.80 a Gallon.
So then each Companies Profit Equations might look like:
USSE
((Sales Price of Fuel to SSTP) - (Total Costs) + Sales of Carbon Ash Byproduct + Sales of BioGas Byproduct.
SSTP
(Sales Price of Fuel to Customer - Buy Price from USSE) + Any Green Credits and Green Certificates qualified for.
There is also the matter of any Fuels Subsidy (State & Federal) the Fuels might qualify for. The WSR Report mentions a Subsidy of $1.20 per Gallon. I am not sure who is entitled to this money.
.
New Management Skill Added
Look at all this new knowledge, expertise, experience and Management skills recenly added to USSE.
Prior to that, Jack founded and was CEO of Worldwide Wireless Networks, where he took the company public (company was ultimately acquired by Covad). Jack has an MBA from Pepperdine University (Malibu, CA) and a BA in business and economics from Edinboro University (Edinboro, Scotland).
Mike LoCascio
CTE, Biocentric Energy
Mike LoCascio has spent over 10 years working as a sales engineer in the water treatment and specialty chemicals area with the last 5 of those years dedicated exclusively to designing environmentally compliant water treatment systems for ethanol processing facilities. Mike was directly involved in consulting on the design and process engineering of 34 ethanol projects during that time. Mike was the first sales engineer in his company's history to achieve sales in excess of $1 million dollars in a year. He achieved that goal 4 years in a row and was awarded sales engineer of the year in 2003. After leaving the specialty chemical sales field, Mike partnered with Jim Blair to form Core Ventures Renewable Fuels. Mike has a BS in Nuclear Engineering from Iowa State University (1989). Mike served 5 years active duty in the United States Marine Corps and 3 years in the reserves.

Re: POTENTIAL Growth
Good post. Well put, i agree completely.
The stock market is a forward looking vehicle, historically 6 months in advance.
Over the long term, stocks generally reach their true equilibrium. However, in the short term, stocks can be way undervalued (where we are now), and can become way overvalued (where we might be headed).
The Rivera Process is a Disruptive Technology, so yes it can be valued like a biotech company. It will be very similar to a start-up biotech stock, getting a new drug unexpectedly approved by the FDA. IF/When The Rivera Process is proven viable, and produces the numbers we here know that it is capable of, look out above for the stock price.
.
Valuation
USSE holds about 645 Million shares of SSTP in it's Treasury. SSTP closed Friday at .09. So, at this very moment, the USSE treasury has a cash value of about $58 Million. So, USSE has a value of about .04 a share, just from the SSTP shares alone. If/when SSTP goes to .20 a share (which might be soon), the USSE Treasury will have a value of about $129 Million, or about .08 a share. This is strictly from the value of the SSTP shares alone.
USSE has a value and applicable Market Cap in it's own right that would be added to the value of the SSTP shares. Remember, SSTP is pretty much a middleman, USSE does all the production, and will make profits on what they produce. USSE also controls the big picture, because they set the price to sell to SSTP as they see fit.
Minus the SSTP shares, USSE is valued at a Market Cap of about $45M, while SSTP currently has a Maket Cap of about $117M.
USSE is currently blatantly underpriced.
Do not worry bub, when we get more accurate numbers we will fill you in.

TTCM Newbie Synopsis
TTCM China, founded in 1995 and based in Tianjin China, is a leading producer of glass-reinforced composite plastic products including regular and high-pressure pipes, fittings related to the water supply and sewerage systems. In cooperation with the Harbin Industry University, TTCM developed an advanced technology employing micro-emulsification, which enables a reduction of the amount of resin used in the production process and at the same time raises the product compactness, strength and infiltration quality. These procedures make TTCM's glass-reinforced plastic pipes superior in strength to plastic pipes while they only weigh one-fourth the weight of regular steel pipes and one-eighth of the weight of similar class concrete piping. Pipes range from 4 feet to 12 feet in diameter, and up to 40 feet long, with a lifetime of up to 50 years.
The exceptional sustained economic growth of China, combined with increased industrialization and urbanization, inadequate investment in basic water supply and treatment infrastructure, and the world's largest population at over 1. 3 billion, has created a huge demand for TTCM China's services. Current estimates suggest that over half of China's population, as many as 700 million people, consume drinking water contaminated with human and animal waste at levels well above maximum permissible levels. TTCM's extended life plastic pipes provide effective solutions to this growing dilemma. In short China (and many other Asian countries) have a severe Water Crisis, TTCM has a solution.
TTCM has been in business for 12 years, but only went public in the United States in early 2005. During the 3 years that we have the company Financials, TTCH has been mildly profitable.TTCH has repeatedly stated that growth has been limited due to a lack of Working Capital. On June 7, 2007 the company announced that they have finally obtained access to Working Capital by an Open-ended Revolving Line of Credit. TTCM also has a Signed Contract Backlog over $23.5 Million. Due to these factors, some of the current investors have estimated 2007 Revenues to triple to about $20 Million and Profits to surge Threefold to about $1.6 Million from the previous best year in their history. We can not see any reason why the share price will not follow. In fact, we believe that TTCH is currently severely undervalued and has bright prospects for continued, rapid growth.
TTCM does have an investor contact in California. His name is Dr. Choe, he runs or helps run several bussinesses, is on several Board of Directors, so he is a busy person. Due to some recent incident he has been a little tight lipped about company information. He is currently searching for a firm to handle Public and/or Investors Relations for the company. TTCM unfortunately is a PinkSheet stock, but does plan in the future to get Audited Financials to satisfy the SEC and get a BB Exchange Listing. Apparently, the company believes that right now the money is better spent on Working Capital to work thru their backlog, than getting Financials. If you feel that you must contact Dr. Choe we ask that you remember he is a very busy person, please be respectful, and keep your relevant questions to a minimum. By phone, myself and several others, along with an investor that met Dr. Choe in person in his office, have verified with him, a lot of this information.
In Summary
TTCM is a real company, that is currently profitable, with a superior product that is in great demand. TTCM for the first time ever, now has Working Capital with a Signed Contract Backlog, therefore is poised for outstanding growth.

Fully Understanding The Press Releases
When crafting together a PR, most companies go to great lengths to compact a lot of information into a small concise space. This is especially true of the 4 recent BCEI/Core-SSTP/USSE PR's. They contain a ton of information in a relatively short amount of time. Personally, over the years, to properly understand a PR, I have found it immensely beneficial to read and reread the same PR at least 5 times, preferably over a period of several days. I am amazed at the new nuggets of information I glean every time I reread a PR. I think that investors that only read a PR once, just do not absorb all the information that is available to them. Re: Senior Management Page
Yes they have updated the page. More specifically, they have added 5 people from BioCentric Energy, Core Ventures, FreedomFuels. Very interesting indeed.
The lightning speed with which SSTP/BCEI-Core has embraced each other is astonishing. In a little over 2 weeks, they have issued 4 revealing PR's, which came to a head with the Demonstration in Natchez last Tuesday. In my opinion this is the best thing that has ever happened to USSE/SSTP. This Deal is HUGE and moving fast.
Another observation worth noting is that Dr. Zuckerman does not appear on that page. It does appear that Zuckerman is out as CEO.

Cars of the Near Future Will Use Less Fuel, May Run on Electricity, Senate Legislation Suggest
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The cars, SUVS and pickups people will buy in the years ahead are likely to use less fuel, and many will rely on ethanol or household electricity instead of gasoline. The energy legislation pushed through the Senate this week provides a roadmap to the future, demanding higher automobile fuel economy, mandating huge increases in ethanol as a motor fuel and supporting more research into building "plug-in" hybrid-electric vehicles.
While Senate Republicans complained that the bill does nothing to increase domestic oil production, Democrats said that's because the nation must move energy policy away from its heavy reliance on oil.
The House is preparing its own version.
The Senate bill requires automakers to increase fuel economy to 35 miles per gallon, about a 40 percent increase over what cars, SUVs and small trucks are required to achieve now. It would lump all the vehicles under a single regulation, but also give manufacturers flexibility so large SUVs wouldn't have to meet the same requirements as smaller cars.
It requires a yearly increase of ethanol production to 36 billion gallons a year by 2022, a sevenfold increase from today. By 2015 half of the new vehicles offered to buyers -- as many as 10 million -- will have to be capable of running on 85 percent ethanol, biodiesel or some other alternative energy source.
And for the first time, the president must find ways to cut oil demand by 20 percent of what it is expected to be in 2017 -- a target President Bush has embraced -- and attain further reductions after that. Gasoline demand is expected to grow 13 percent to 261 billion gallons a year by 2017 without some fuel saving measures.
But will auto showrooms provide the same selection of vehicles? Will they be as big, as powerful, as safe?
"I would expect them to look a lot like they do today, the same size, the same acceleration and the same or even better safety," says David Friedman, director of the clean vehicles program at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
He maintains they will have better technology, better engines, more efficient transmissions and stronger aluminum bodies. They'll cost a little more but use much less gasoline.
"The goal is to replace fossil fuels with alternative fuels and use conservation," said Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., who was involved in the discussions on many of the auto fuel economy and motor fuel issues that ended up in the bill.
What has changed from a few years ago, she said, is there no longer is "a fear factor that you're going to be in itty bitty cars" if the government requires automakers to make more fuel efficient vehicles.
In addition to making conventional cars more fuel efficient, the bill seeks to boost research into use of lithium-ion batteries -- like those used in laptop computers and cameras -- in vehicles.
Should ways be found to make them more durable in a vehicle environment, cars could be plugged into an electric socket at home, relying only rarely on gasoline, says Friedman. Some studies have estimated the fuel cost -- mostly the cost of electricity and a small amount of gasoline -- would be equivalent to about $1 a gallon, said Cantwell.
Automakers, lobbying hard against the fuel economy provision in the Senate bill, expressed continued concern Friday about their ability to meet the new requirements without changing the mix of cars they will be able to provide in the showrooms of 2020.
"There's no way you can get those numbers without a dramatic shift in consumer choice," insisted Mark LaNeve, General Motors' vice president of North America sales, service and marketing. "We don't know how it's attainable."
Eric Ridenour, chief operating officer at Chrysler Group, where three of every four vehicles are built on truck frames, said the company will have to decide whether to keep selling some of its larger vehicles.
"Clearly the larger family-sized vehicles will be the ones that will be most at risk," said Ridenour. "The end result will be lighter, smaller vehicles in general." He envisioned generally smaller cars and more of them running on diesel.
Ford Motor Co. is committed to increasing auto fuel economy, said Alan Mulally, the company's chief executive. "It's what customers want. It's what they value."
But is it possible technically to meet the proposed 35 mpg fleet requirements even with a new way of calculating compliance taking into account vehicles size?
"That's the only debate," said Mulally on Friday at a Ford assembly plant in Chicago where the company was introducing its new Taurus model, one that travels 28 mpg on the open road.
AP reporters David Carpenter in Chicago and Tom Krisher in Detroit contributed to this story.
