From Wikipedia
Japanese pharmaceutical Eisai bought the rights to Targretin and three other anti-cancer products from Ligand in 2006.[4]
In 2012 it was announced in a preprint that researchers had discovered that bexarotene reduced amyloid plaque and improved mental functioning in a small sample of mice engineered to exhibit Alzheimer's symptoms. Three different mouse models (APP/PS1, APPPS1-21, Tg2576) were used. It is thought that bexarotene stimulates expression of apolipoprotein E (ApoE), which leads to intracellular clearance of ß-Amyloid. The Alzheimer's Foundation of America expressed concern that people desperate to find a treatment for Alzheimer's not take matters into "their own hands."
In the United States, patents on the drug expire in 2016.[4

Cancer drug improves symptoms of Alzheimer's in mice, study says
Published 10 February 2012
An existing cancer drug seems to improve many of the effects of Alzheimer's disease in mice, a study published in the journal Science has found.
Researchers in Ohio found the drug bexarotene was effective in increasing levels of the protein ApoE, which in turn sped up the clearance of amyloid-beta, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. They also discovered that the drug quickly improved memory deficits and behaviour. This supports previous research which has shown that ApoE helps clear amyloid plaques in the brain.
Alzheimer's Society comment:
'This exciting study could be the beginning of a journey towards a potential new way to treat Alzheimer's disease. However, this is very early days. People with Alzheimer's should not rush to get this drug, as we need much more research to establish if it has benefits for humans.
'Investigating the added benefits of existing licensed drugs is an innovative approach in our fight against the condition, and one which Alzheimer's Society is championing through its Drug Discovery programme. This could see new treatments for dementia being developed much sooner.'

Targretin® (bexarotene) capsules
Targretin® (bexarotene) capsules 75 mg are used to treat the skin problems arising from a disease called cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) when at least one systemic therapy has not worked. A doctor must advise on the proper use of Targretin capsules.
CTCL is a rare disease. In CTCL, T-cells become cancerous and affect the skin and the blood. Normally T-cells are used by the body to fight infections. CTCL symptoms are often mistaken for a rash, eczema or psoriasis.
In the United States, there are nearly 2,000 new cases annually and the annual incidence continues to rise and its cause is unknown.
Do not take Targretin capsules if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Targretin capsules may harm your fetus (unborn baby). You should contact your doctor immediately if you believe or suspect you are pregnant while you are taking Targretin capsules and until one month after you stop taking Targretin capsules.
If you are capable of becoming pregnant, you must have a pregnancy test within one week before you start Targretin capsule therapy and monthly while you are on therapy, confirming you are not pregnant.
You must use effective contraception (birth control) continuously starting one month before beginning treatment with Targretin capsules until one month after you stop taking Targretin capsules. It is strongly recommended that two reliable forms of contraception be used together. At least one of these two forms of contraception should include condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, IUDs, or spermicides.
If you are male and your partner is pregnant or capable of becoming pregnant, you should discuss with your doctor the precautions you should take.
Do not take Targretin capsules if you are allergic to this medicine.
Targretin capsules can greatly increase blood levels of lipids (triglycerides and cholesterol) and these levels must be monitored and, if elevated, treated.
Targretin capsules can cause an underactive thyroid and periodic blood tests will be needed to detect this. Medication to control the condition may be necessary.
Before you start to take Targretin capsules, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, have or previously had an inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis), are breastfeeding, are taking gemfibrozil (Lopid®) a medicine to reduce high triglyceride cholesterol (fats) levels in the blood, or are taking tamoxifen (Nolvadex®).
You should tell your doctor if you are allergic to retinoid medications (for example: Accutane® [isotretinoin], Soriatane® [acitretin], Tegison [etretinate], Vesinoid® [tretinoin]), have or ever had high triglyceride (a fatty substance) levels in your blood, diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes), gall bladder disease, any liver disease, if you regularly drink more than a small amount of alcohol, are taking any prescription medication for fungal infections, bacterial infections, or seizures, or eat a lot of grapefruit or drink a lot of grapefruit juice.
Because vitamin A in large doses may cause some side effects which are similar to those seen in patients applying Targretin gel, do not take more than the recommended daily dietary allowance of vitamin A (4000 to 5000 International Units). If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight while taking this medicine. Minimize exposure to sunlight and do not use a sunlamp.
The most common side effects with Targretin capsules are an increase in blood lipids (fats in the blood), headache, weakness, underactive thyroid, decreased white blood cells and diarrhea.
Please also see the Targretin capsules Full Prescribing Information and patient's instructions for use including Boxed WARNING and additional important safety information.

Greek Government Twits - Daily Diary
Greece lets another deadline slip in bailout poker

....a government official denied that the parties had been given an ultimatum to respond on Monday.
Asked whether the parties had to respond in time for a Euro Working Group meeting of finance ministry officials in Brussels, the Greek official said: "No, there is no deadline."
I think you may be correct, but as we have seen time and time again, the Greek deals tend to fall apart at the last minute, and even if there is a new deal, it will likely fail very quickly. Even so, TBT, at this level, may still be a short to intermediate term gem since the Fed is rapidly running out of Keynesian options that even the most gullible investors will swallow. As for long term, the sky may be the limit here.

I suspect the markets may loosen up a bit during the next few months as the Fed floods new "electronic" dollars into the crony'd up big boy banking system, and we may actually see some activity in nano and micro stocks once again. Of course, a financial Armageddon is still solidly on the table, but we are probably a year or so in advance of that highly likely train wreck. In any case, CMTX may be in a relatively good position to score a few "freebie" Fed dollars considering our market savvy CEO is likely to be ahead of the curve with respect to how the crony game works. I just hope he doesn't exclude us "little" guys who have stuck with the stock through thick and thin. Surely, there must be a plan to allow our corporate principals to unlock some of their equity here, and hopefully, they won't care if we peons catch a few crumbs in the process. Heck, I might even sign up for the Premium SmarTrend service with sufficient proceeds from my shares.
We should be just days away from the second quarter 10Q. Hopefully, we will get a better sense of where funding will come from should the company secure a major new contract or get the go signal on one of the numerous pipeline deals. Of course, the financial markets are still in a virtual lock down due to the economic uncertainty being imposed by our elitist political twits in DC, and nano caps, like EKCS, are highly vulnerable in such a fearful fiscal environment. Will Punxsutawney Barchenko see his shadow and head back into the burrow until May, or will we have an early spring? Stay tuned.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), the world’s largest retailer, may be interested in Carrefour SA (CA) stores should the French retailer decide it needs to sell outlets, the Independent on Sunday said, citing a person close to Wal-Mart. Steuart Walton, a grandson of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, is leading a European expansion drive and is keeping tabs on the difficulties faced by Carrefour, which is said to be close to hiring a successor to Chief Executive Officer Lars Olofsson, the newspaper reported, without saying where it got the information. You have my deepest sympathy.
Maybe, but unless there's significant news coming, why the huge jump in the bid? Wouldn't insiders just quietly acquire shares at or around the lows of the past months until hapless stockholders, like us, began to see a pattern? Of course, if there's any material information being withheld, such insider buying might well be unethical or illegal, but the regulatory agencies are unlikely to be even remotely cognizant of a "sub-nano" like ASZP. Of course, what I think is usually the opposite of actual reality.
Whatever it was, it tripped the heck out of the alarm on my stock screener.

Americans Can Save More Money at Walmart This Tax Season Retailer offers $3 flat fee check-cashing and free federal 1040EZ filing in more than 3,000 stores
PR Newswire
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Jan. 9, 2012
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Jan. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Walmart (NYSE: WMT) is determined to save Americans money this tax season, and is doing so through its $3 and $6 check cashing(1). The retailer has also worked with its partners to lower costs for their tax preparation services including free in-store federal Form 1040EZ filing.
(Logo: photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090914/WALMARTLOGO )
Last year more than 60 million Americans didn't have access to traditional banking services – such as credit cards and checking accounts(2) – adding up to billions of dollars in fees paid by Americans who need it the most.
"We believe Americans shouldn't have to pay exorbitant prices on their everyday financial needs," said Daniel Eckert, vice president of Walmart Financial Services. "It's their money and we want to make sure they can cash checks, pay bills and transfer money at a low price."
Over the next two weeks these underserved Americans will file their taxes and start cashing approximately $31 billion in tax refund checks(3). Sadly, so many providers stand to capitalize on these individuals by charging between one and three percent of the total refund to cash the check. The average tax refund is $2,902 which means Americans could spend up to $90 just to receive their tax refund(4).
"Customers need to make every dollar count in this tough economy, and that's why we're committed to helping customers pay less for their financial services during tax season and throughout the year," said Eckert. "With more than 3,000 tax preparation kiosks in Walmart stores across the U.S. and low flat-fee check cashing services, our customers can conveniently make their refund dollars stretch farther by simply taking care of their tax needs at Walmart."
Leading up to the biggest tax filing week of the year, January 16 - 22, Walmart has worked with Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block to double its in-store tax kiosks and lower the cost for tax preparation services. Jackson Hewitt will offer free federal Form 1040EZ filing(5) at its Walmart kiosks throughout the tax season and H&R Block will offer a free federal Form 1040EZ until February 29. H&R Block will have 250 kiosks in Walmart stores, while Jackson Hewitt is adding approximately 800 kiosks bringing their Walmart footprint to 2,800.
In addition to Walmart's tax offerings, the retailer offers the following convenient products and services to its customers throughout the year:
Walk-in bill paying services for utilities, mobile phones, rent and more starting at 88 cents. Customers can receive a paper receipt on the spot and choose between same-day, next-day, three-day or money orders as bill payment options.
The Walmart MoneyCard is a re-loadable prepaid debit card that provides many of the advantages of a checking account without the overdraft fees. MoneyCard customers can deposit their paychecks on the card, check their balances, pay bills, shop online and shop everywhere Visa or MasterCard debit is accepted.
Money transfers(6) across the country and around the world in as little as 10 minutes, with fees starting at $4.95.
