Im a machine shop leader for over 15 years, been in the trade since 1977
I have been involved in many projects
space shuttle parts, unlimited Hydroplanes,
auto assemble lines, plastic molds,graphite fiber car,
air plane fixtures, hose electrical conectors that do not need saftey wire, tank assemble lines, truck assemble lines, nuclear plant parts, jet engine parts,
rocket motor parts other than, the space shuttle block 2 up grade. heleocopter rotor hub parts,
gun support for helocoptor never did work that one out
told them cant do it but we got paid to try?
the point is I know how things can go south FAST
one place i workrd at got invesiagated by the Fbi?
all it takes is one bad drawing and you have lots of
wasted time and material
FREEUS looks rather simple and thats were one can get into
trouble. The guy next door need help with a swing set,
he had parts left over
there is more than just making the parts too!!!!
asemblie and set up, and operation directions, wiring
digrams there is usally a computer in there some were
so need a program for that. Matinance procdures
then need to get every thing in a Box arange shipping
insuranse who is responcabel for down time
the list is end less
I have made the same part over and over untill its right
then months later A new order comes in and then find
out all the changes were not written down Guy quits
and the insane caos begins all over
it gives you white knuckle feaver when you drive home.
when I read that they are having problems getting parts
that means that the drawing are not right!
Dont want people know that you had to throw away,
some thing made to the print, and its no good.
thats why its a good idea to make a few
before making 100 of parts
it can cost more to fix them than make new ones
but if you cant get new stock or some other reason
then if the repair dosent work.
One part I worked on made 280 parts, got sent out for silver plating, they dunked the parts in molten silver the thread were not there looked like a solid shaft so tryed to recut
the thread to cut the silver out. well we could not see
how to clock up the thread so they got thrown away
one month down the tube so to speak
made another 280 had them vapor plate them looked great.
but they dident fit found out that the lathe opreator
cut the thread to size the plating was .0025 to .004 thick
we can see the threads now lets try to recut the thread
dident work another month GONE also more problems
as the gage got stuck on the part as some one thought
the silver would be like a oil?
Need a New gage took 4 days to get new gage then cant find
new stock had to pay for a steel mill run BIG money
took 2 weeks
got through that part of it so now its time to drill and tap
holes on the mill well that dident go so well throw them out
another month gone
now people are going home with part behind their car,
like pop cans at a wedding it seamed funny at the time
Next thing happens Lathe Guy get in to a fight with his wife
Cops come to the shop and Buy Bye free ride to the
crow Bar hotel. Then he want to sew the company
for the break with his wife, working so many hours 96 a week!!
and some thing about harasment from fello employes can thing
not so funny now
he had to go to Anger magment classe too 3 times a week
this was a really inportant part as it went on the end of a turban shaft and held every thing together
so then find out that the parts that go in the tapped holes are no good throw themm away make new ones
machine
thats makeing part B breaks cant be repaired
3 to 5 week for a new machine come to find out
PArt B first run is ok? not all the part got thrown away
so with the parts from the second run and ones that dident get thrown away we had enough Yea!!!!!!!
But they were not run in a single batch 6 part B s were
needed for 1 part A so that comes to 1680 parts
so they had to be sent out to be indepently inspecthe and tested more luck they had to destroy part to test them
1 in 50 bye bye 40 parts
it really frys My Eyes when Im told every thing is ok
then I got pulled over for drunk driving 3 beers
spent the night in the crow bar hotel.
(the Inpound yard was next to the shop)
made to work the next day too!!!!!
as if im not there no body works!!!!
Need to look in the dumpster
the roof at the shop started leaking
found out guy were
throwing part on the roof!!!!!!!!!!!
any thing can happen
