George Jones - Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes
Millie Jackson - Loving Arms
Duffy's Nucleus - Mary Open The Door
He's "an unstoppable force,"
to quote a mutual friend.
Chubby was signed and controlled
by Morris Levy/Roulette Records who in turn was
backed by the Genovese family who in turn controlled
Harlem at the time via their associate "Bumpy" Johnson.
Had they wanted Chubby at Smalls he would have been there, no doubt.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Levy.
The feeling was that he expropriated it
from Hank Ballard. Besides, Chubby came from PHILADELPHIA!
I think the fat guy playing the bari
remained stationary.
Along the road to perfection at the Apollo, no doubt there
were some damaged horns in need of repair on the Chittlin' Circuit!
Back then, I saw a ton of music, but the most memorable thing
wasn't musical. It was at a club in Harlem named Small's Paradise.
Later it was re-named Big Wilt's Smalls Paradise after Wilt Chamberlain became
a partial owner. (Regardless of your size or wealth, in NY in those days you were
always partnered with some "fellows" from Brooklyn).
I was probably 17 with another person's draft card and along with a friend, was
there to see Ray Charles & his orchestra with the Raelettes.
The band was full of great jazz players and, as typical, they opened the show to warm things
up for "The Genius." After several numbers the lights dimmed and an announcer off stage introduced
the man himself, who then entered from stage left. He was led out by his long-time manager Joe Adams.
After seating at the piano he started to play an instrumental from one of his records called "Doodlin," written
by Horace Silver. Partially into the tune, Ray leaned over and, instead of correcting his balance, fell off the piano stool.
WOW!
Joe Adams rushed back on stage and helped Ray onto feet. They quickly closed the curtain and
shortly thereafter it reopened with the band, once again playing a few more numbers until finally, Ray re-appeared
and quite honestly, sang his ass off!
Same w. Sam & Dave's horn section!
It was so outrageous, I sat through the shitty movie again
to see their performance in the second show.
(The Apollo found movies so awful that seeing them twice
in one day was dangerous to your health.)
They DARED you to do what I did.
He had the most dynamic act
I ever saw at The Apollo. His horn players (3 or 4, I can't recall), did back flips!
In the glory days of The Wolfman Jack nightly broadcasts on XERB, out of Del Rio, TX, Joe did a DJ
segment on Friday night & James Brown did one on Saturday night. Pre-recorded, of course.
Joe Tex; they called him "The Rapper."

I'll be there
He was always very generous with me.
There are some stories I'd love to tell. but propriety
demands my silence, joe.
Jimmy Webb was a personal and professional
associate of mine. By the time I'd met him, however, he'd lost a bit of his "acuity" and
one morning he appeared as a musical guest on the Today Show. Halfway through his song
he abruptly stopped singing and playing the piano. Rushing in to cover, Bryant Gumbel asked him
what was wrong? Jimmy simply replied "I forgot the rest of the words."
Without losing a beat, B.G. immediately switched over to interview mode and said "Tell me what it was
like to be a sensation in the business when you were 19 yrs old!"
That's why Bryant Gumbel was making 8 million a year from NBC.
Jimmy was still a great composer, however. (see post #55318)
Otis Redding - Pain In My Heart
Very interesting right hand, cap.
Ravens have an impressive record at home.
Minus 3 seems like a gift.
Percy Mayfield - The Danger Zone
Charles Brown - Driftin' Blues
T-Bone Walker - Get These Blues Off Me
Ray Charles - Losing Hand
John Coltrane - Good Bait
Overlooked & under rated;
he set the table for the "sliders" that followed.
He's LOOKED 71 for the past 10 years.
Performing w/o a stage is about as real
as it gets. That was often the case in a lotta dumps
I played in in my "yoot."

For what?
Full disclosure, cap
I never bet, I only "handicap" sports games. I thought GB was a really good play
as they've had an unlikely win streak against Dallas, IN Dallas, and It continued! I thought the Lions
would cover given their home advantage and the hype around the way they "lost" that game via the
legitimately contested off-sides call. Their late game defense proved porous.
One analytic hardly spoken of is what I call the SPI. It's much more applicable in collegiate sports, but I
value it, anyway. It refers to how many single parent players are on a team. Those dudes have an
extra chip on their shoulder. For that reason I rarely favor Notre Dame!
Mixed feelings.......
Yer team wins but they fail to cover.
It's a really rough town, cap!
They deserve to go all the way, IMO.
Next game!
Eminem is there. One Shot!!
Bet the house.
Thank me later,
Regrets, cap;

It is illegal to sell marijuana across state lines.
"But, Oregon's marijuana can only be sold in Oregon. No one in any state can legally sell weed
across state lines, because marijuana is still illegal under federal law."
God only knows where he's selling it.
There just aren't that many gram buyers in Oregon.
I think he has an open wide "back door."
