A large number of publishers (you and I as examples) may not be appreciative of what Matt has afforded us…………for free.
I appreciate it, but he's going to have to get me "hooked" on his stuff before I'm willing to buy it. (It's not a bad business model; it's worked in other industries you know!)
As for the value I get right now at this moment; I'm not willing to pay very much - maybe $25 for a lifetime subscription. In time, that'll go up. I only paid $50 or so for my SI lifetime. Was paying monthly... $10 or so I think... then was offered a free id so I took it. I was on the verge of forking over the $200 or so a lifetime costed there before the freebie was offered. Bob, correct me please if my SI numbers are bad off. I really can't recall what they were.
I've bookmarked a few TA threads... time will tell whether I'll get value out of them or not.
Eventually Bob's gonna need more juice for his Mustang, so I imagine they'll come up with a revenue generating model sooner or later. :)

Well, if I get grandfathered in, that'd be cooler than having to pay...
Thanks for the TA link. I've got it bookmarked.

Nice, useful url's in your header, Vendit... thanks.
Will be lurking and try to jump in once I get a feel for the thread.

This control by a thread head IS why I LOVE IHUB.
LOL! That's my problem with ihub. Of course, I choose to accept the TOU to have the privelege of posting here just the same.
As I said earlier, you violated the letter of the law; not the spirit. Sometimes folks get carried away with enforcing the law in a legalistic manner losing all sight of the spirit of the law just like the religious leaders did in Jesus' day. (The same leaders who held the commandent "you shall not murder" conspired to have Jesus tried and killed, but to them they were clean since they did not violate the letter of the law.) Note that I'm not trying to compare myself to Jesus in anyway... just coming up with a well-known, well-understood historical fact I think.
Besides, I'm feeling lazy and don't want to delete your post. I rather enjoyed reading it. My original statement (about deleting your post) was meant to be dripping in sarcasm so as to highlight my point of view.

Reid, let me also add that despite all the wild allegations made with regard to my creating multiple id's or pretending to be multiple people, I've never, ever done that on ANY chat site including this one and SI. Where possible, my id's on these sites is "smchan" and when that one is taken, I usually try for "srmchan".
If ihub goes to a subscription model, I will pay assuming I've found a few threads I consider to be worthy of the price. As yet, I haven't found one, but I honestly haven't looked that hard b/c I have several on SI that keep me plenty busy. (Special kudos to TC and the Befriend the Trend Trading thread on SI where I starting learning about TA.)
I can afford the subscription price b/c I have no intentions of creating even a second id, and so far I'm scoreless w/ respect to suspensions on SI and ihub. (I can see Bob's finger hovering over that suspension button now!)

post 3; maybe 4... who's keeping count?
Hey Reid, you forgot to number your post, but I'll let it stand anyways. 8-) (I do not like legalism, and you are well within the spirit of the thread's rules.)
Interesting point about worthwhile content and a good lead in on my opinion concernings whether Bob is bad or good for ihub. I'll tell you this much, without Bob I would've been gone a long time ago. I realize I don't always know the whole story, but I felt Matt's actions demonstrated a lack of experience w/ regards to acting as a chat sysop and I think he was overwhelmed with this (and other) responsibilities.
IMO there are still imbalances but I do believe Bob is trying hard to fix them in a peaceful manner. I just wish he'd hurry the heck up. I definitely saw a change in trend after Bob arrived. Without that trend change, I would've written this site off a long time ago.
All that aside, I would like to find a few TA threads where I feel comfortable but as yet I haven't found anything I like to keep up with. Suggestions are welcomed.

post 2 (i think)
if someone posts something on a chat site via a browser could it be accessed off their machine 2 months from now...
Definitely maybe. Web servers can trace just about any aspect of user activity. Same with routers and other Internet "plumbing". Never assume you're complete anonymouse on the 'net.
Time to go bring my kid home from the hospital... I am so happy he's doing better. His big brother has missed him this week.
Feel free to ask questions about tracing, hacking, etc and I'll answer as best I can later tonight.

Did you buy the EMC yet?
No, I'm probably at least a few days away from making any trades w/ my covered calls. I haven't properly chosen all my stocks and dd'ed them and I still need to develop my plan since this is a new strategy for me.
Do you have a preferred board that you'd like me to use? Would rather keep my options plays in 1 place. (Feel free to answer privately... didn't mean to put you on the spot.)

I know that emails and computer files can be accessed even when deleted and that is figuring in more and more in lawsuits...
If you use a browser, odds are that a good portion of your activity over the last few days is well preserved in your history logs and browser cache. Some apps only throw deleted files into trash cans which are not emptied until explicitly specified. Even then, remnants of files that are software recoverable still remain.
Beyond that, you have to drop to a physical level to restore data. Disks store information by "burning" 1's and 0's on a magnatized surface. Those 1's and 0's can linger - even when written over so someone with the right tools (probably a microscope and a lot of patience) can re-construct remnants of files. Costs go up accordingly with each level of work required for file restoration.
All that said, browsers are MORE apt to "remember" information than many other types of apps. Furthermore, you have NO idea what type of logging the web server is doing or how the web app is implemented. There are some really nasty ways one can spy on clients from the server.
Even beyond that, data carriers can trace traffic. It's possible to tap your DSL or cable modem line with a network sniffer and record every bit of net traffic coming across your line. It's also possible to have routers record traffic passing thru them.

No, I am considering selling covered calls against my current investment.
I have no current position in EMC but have traded it in the recent past.
Sorry for not clarifying that earlier...
Sam
I don't know the details of how that works internally, but would strongly suspect that only the last revision is physically saved.
From a programming perspective, it makes sense to me. I tend to believe, however, if that post is captured somehow, it has essentially been "recorded" and could stand as evidence. If someone places a voice call and hangs up, the call (and signal carrying the voice) is gone but it can be captured on tape and later used as evidence (right Ms. Lewinsky?). Personally, I look at copied posts the same way though I have to figure in the credibility of the copier as w/o some other technology, there's no way of knowing the copied text is genuine or not w/o some record of the original post.
Considering the number of people that read one such shocking post last night on the "other" site, I can't imagine that one having any problems standing up.
When I occassionally say something I later regret, I will edit the post to remove the offending words and try to offer a bit of an apology and explaination for my poor actions. There are other effective methods too - like name calling. :)

Maybe he's referring to collective, relative mass and not the number of people?

I saw that Lisa. I sent Bob several examples of selectively applied thread rules too and I think he, at least, has an appreciation for the problem.
It's hard to be patient in Internet-time, but I'm trying hard. Looking forward to Bob's answer.
I've never talked to Tim on the phone but I hear he has a bit of an accent. Is that true? :) I'm glad the two of you talked... this is a strange world indeed. I've invited him to come watch WWF wrasslin' pay per views with me a few times, but he's generally had a "thing" already planned. LOL!

I didn't see the disclosure that Poet and I wanted about whether he was Chinese
I tell you many, many time... I no Chinese. Just for that, you no get spyplane back.
In regards to no. 2, that one is a tough problem. Of course, I'm not Bob so I can't answer but rest assured I've voiced my opinion using many words on this topic. Simply put, I asked whether ihub's policy is to let a CoB selectively apply thread rules or not. It is baffling to me that I and others are being censored for being off-topic while the censoring CoB is allowed to do the very same thing. Too bad our language is not more precise and less open to interpretation. I am anxiously awaiting Bob's answer to my question though I realize it might take a few days to think it over... then another few days to pound it in my thick head while I go test the boundaries of the rule and, of course, get censored.

Oh my... I posted *two* of my picks... what's the world coming to?
I am already long IBM and am considering a small position in EMC as a basis to sell covered calls. I hate to play against myself (IBM and EMC are competitors) but like what little I've seen on EMC so far. Has anyone researched EMC vis-a-vis IBM and can you tell me what both companys' prospects are in the storage arena?
Thanks,

Bob, I like to bust your chops, but I think I'm reasonable in doing so. Please consider me.
Sam
And here's a bit more info that suggests such rulings may no longer be legal...
http://www.mbendi.co.za/werksmns/techwks4.htm
A recent amendment has been made to the US Telecommunications Act 1996 and the Communications Decency Act of 1995, which provides that interactive computer services are not republishers of the data transmitted over their computers. This would in many instances protect the ISP from defamation claims.
It can clearly be seen that the legislatures and courts in other countries are tending towards protecting service providers from liability for defamation. The rationale underlying this view seems to be the immense burden on ISP's in trying to edit the information. It is likely that South Africa will follow this international trend.
Though I don't like CoB (and have spoken out against it), I think it would be a bad thing to see ihub (or similar websites) taken out for their content. I hope you guys have good legal counsel and keep your noses clean. (That's not a threat from me; just a statement. I'm not even remotely interested in launching any sort of legal challenge to ihub.)
Sam
The owners of *any* venue (be it online or 3D) have sole discretion in determining what can and can't be said in their venue and who can or can't say it. Period. Whether a site is free or paid has zero bearing on it.
Excellent point, Bob. I agree that you have every right to edit the content in the best way you see fit, but I also think that right carries some responsibilities as was demonstrated with Prodigy years ago. If you recall, Prodigy would not allow posts until they were reviewed. Someone bashed a company on Prodigy, that company sued Prodigy, and Prodigy lost because as editors of that content, they were found responsible for that content. I believe Prodigy tried to argue they were simply a carrier (like a phone company) and not a content provider.
Whether that decision was reversed in appeals or not, I don't recall. It's been a LONG time back (pre "ISP" days) and laws may have changed since to provide more protection to service providers.
I'm sure you and the rest of the ihub team try to maintain some level of standard which satifies the majority of the community b/c, without the community, you'd have no business. Of course, there will always be those of us who will try to bust your chops for one reason or another.
I'm no legal expert, and the above is just from the cobwebs of my memory, so I'd suggest researching what I said before stating it as fact, etc etc etc.
EDIT: I found more information at google on the law suit against Prodigy.
http://www.jmls.edu/cyber/cases/strat1.html
http://www.eff.org/pub/Legal/Cases/Stratton_Oakmont_Porush_v_Prodigy/prodigy_decision_eff.summary
Here's the interesting part...
Stratton Oakmont and Porush sued Prodigy, the volunteer moderator of the Money Talk forum, and the anonymous user who made the postings. Prodigy asked to be dismissed from the case on the claim that Prodigy could not be held responsible for the postings of its users, but the judge disagreed and issued the ruleing in response to plaintiff's motion for partial summary judgement.
On May 24, 1995, the court held that Prodigy had editorial control over the messages in the Money Talk forum and was therefore liable for the content of those messages. According to the New York Supreme Court (which is a trial level court in New York), Prodigy's policy of systematically monitoring messages made it liable for the content of these messages.
In addition, the court held that since Prodigy directed and controlled the actions of volunteer Board Leaders, at least for the limited purpose of monitoring and editing the Money Talk bulletin board, Prodigy was responsible for the actions of its Board Leaders.

Interesting story... but I fail to see how it's much different than a MM playing the part of an axe to either run or beat down a price. Am I missing something?

You know, Neeny, I ask my wife that all the time. "If nothing else", I tell her, "we need to keep practicing." 8-)
Would like to send the little buggers to private schools, but much more than 2 and it'll be every kid for himself!

Wow! Is that really you? I have a thread over on SI called "The Redhead Lovers' Society". Perhaps I should create an equivalent here. I'm married to a strawberry blonde and genuinely appreciate redheads.
My second son, Joshua, is also a strawberry blonde. Doesn't look like I'm going to get the redheaded daughter I want so much...

I personally see shades of favoritism here towards Jenna.
Come to think of it... Jenna came back to SI in glory... in a total-about face despite her earlier, venomous rantings concerning the SI community. Jenna wrote, "SI needs me". In fact, she needs SI - because I wager she's been suspended from here and has nowhere else to tout her wares. Fortunately for her, her SI suspension was over just-in-time for her to get back there. Unfortunately for her, she ranted and raved a bit much last Thursday night and, despite a promise to have an even stronger presence, she's dropped off the radar screen. Bummer.
How can one be most peoplemarked and most bookmarked if one keeps getting suspended? That's a question for you, Bob, since the thread top is "questions and answers".
Without Jenna, I need a new hobby. Time to order some performance parts for my Z28, I reckon.
Sam
Considering you immediately killed my thread to critique picks posted on Market Gems because it smacked of personal attacks, why haven't you killed the anti-Bob thread which is not even remotely market related? And why have you squelched Lisa from even mentioning Jenna?
I personally see shades of favoritism here towards Jenna (from a business point of view; can't necessarily blame you if you're model is based on click volume), but it doesn't take long for the investment community to figure out what amounts to a an online chat service and what amounts to a forum for those to advertise their stock picking services. Interestingly, after slamming SI over and over, Jenna has elected to return to SI (for 1 night only as it turns out) and publicly stated she'll go with the site that ultimately wins. Jenna blew up (for the third time) on SI Thursday night and has not been heard from since.
I don't know where Jenna is, but my guess is she has not been suspended here but has instead been censored by Pristine for her unprofessional behavior. Certainly my online behavior is not the best in the world, but I'm here for personal reasons; not professional.
Sam
Dog gone Lisa... show us a pic. Then I'll know you're not Lola...
Sam
Tim "Little Lamb" Luke looks like he needs a good shearing.
I bet Jenna secretly thinks he's hot.
Sam
No comment to which part? My being investigated, skipping church, or the story about the snake?
Sam
LOL! You got me under a microscope too? You investigating me?
OK, ok... I confess... I skipped church 2 weeks ago. <sniff> Will I have to go to jail for that?
Lisa, if I haven't said already, I think you're pretty darn cool. For several days now I've had this mental image of a coiled viper about to bite someone's pristine arse!
Sam
Anyone seen Jenna? I miss her...
She said she was going to be posting stronger than ever on SI last night and then *poof* she disappears like that. I hope she's ok...
Sam
I don't know what's going on here, Poet... but in the short time I've known you, your stock (er, call) has really gone up with me. I'm rather surprised to see someone attack you so viciously.
Today, in my head, I kept thinking over and over "In heaven there's no pinin' or droopin'..."
Catch ya on the flip side.
Sam
Speaking of Jenna, where'd she go? She promised she would be back stronger than ever on SI and created a new thread, but there's not been a peep out of her since late last night.
Sam
I'll bet she makes a great pineapple upsidedown cake too.
You know, I honestly can't recall her having ever mdae that. Not that she didn't, I just can't remember it. Mom's deserts usually centered around black berries, blue berries, or strawberries. And let me tell you, to this day, I cannot eat any of those berries to save my life. She'd find some briar patch full of black berries on the side of the road and that woman would make me work all day pickin' them. I still hate them! Our strawberry patch, at its peak, produced about 4-5 gallon per day. We weren't allowed to let the fruit rot 'cause it would ruin the plants. Even if the fruit were to be thrown away, it had to be picked. Fortunately, mom would usually give me a couple gallons to sale to the snowbirds (retirees who moved from the north to Florida) who came to North Carolina for the summer. They ate it up... Did a lot of work with our tractor helping them put in gardens and such as well.
Anyway, about that desert. I don't know the recipes (since I still hate berries), but I remember some old blue porcelain-like pot in which she'd throw a bunch of berries and an equal amount of sugar and cook it with a crust over the top. Everyone - except me - really liked it.
At least a biscuit was never wasted in our house!
Have you ever eaten at The Dillard House outside of Franklin? It's probably been 15-20 years since I've been there, but my wife and I were talking about it recently. We'd really like to go.
Sam
Be warned, Sam, next I'm typing in the first 2/3 of that URL to see what other jewels you've got hosted there.
LOL! I usually have a lot of goodies there, but I've pared back recently. I just finished uploading a few others including a collage of shots from the last family reunion - though most of the shots are just of buildings and stuff. Mom wanted to preserve a few memories before they were gone for good.
See if you can find my grandpa's old tractor.
Sam
The fellow's name is Tommy, he's my grandfather's nephew and the lady (who's voice was faint) is his niece. The lady told me she went to school with my paternal grandfather who died before I was born (she's from my maternal side) and described what a handsome man he was and how she wished he would've dated her. It was neat hearing about my grandfather as a boy, and I wish I had captured it on tape as well.
I'll try to dig up some pictures of Tommy, my grandfather, and others soon.
The recording (actually, a video from which I extracted the audio) was made August of last year at our annual family reunion.
All this talking about my family has me missing the hills bad...
Sam
"I have a confusion?" LOL! I tilled up my yard today and obviously the tiller shook my brain rather hard...
Caradoc, I recorded this at our family reunion last year. I thought you might appreciate it.
http://www.mindspring.com/~smchan/photos/tommy.wav
Sam
Hey Cara... I have a confusion. I'm originally from Murphy, and my wife is from Andrews. Ever heard of 'em?
My pantry is stocked full of jars of green beans and grape jelly from mama. And I always pick up a jar of sourwood honey when I pass thru the hills. Reminds me of robbing the bees with my grand-daddy and watching the women cut the combs out of the supers in big tubs on the front porch. Man, I loved to chew on that wax. We always used denim (from grandpa's worn out overalls) to fuel our smokers.
As much as I like seafood, mama still knows and cooks my favorite meal when I visit: country fried steak, green beans, mashed potatos with gravy, and (my favorite) those fluffy, fat bisuits!
It's sad to see so many ways of the simplier times being lost.
Sam
I spent some of my formative years in Georgia, but the majority of my time has been in NC. Yet I've never been to the northern outer banks. Been to Atlantic Beach (the southern tip of the outer banks) and south towards Wilmington. The Calabash to Wilmington area is my favorite though I've seen some nice places around Beaufort and Morehead City. God and my portfolio willing, I'll have a second home there someday.
BBQ clams sound interesting... I'll have to try that.
Sam
My wife is not too crazy about scallops or clams though I love 'em, so I mostly stick to shrimp on the grill. Mostly, she likes them cooked in a tomato bbq sauce. Have done lobster as well but it's been a while. I boiled them a bit, then split them down the middle, buttered, and finished on the grill. Unfortunately, they (lobsters) are expensive around these parts, so I don't get to enjoy them very often.
Let's work on that accent... "You all" should be said in 1 syllable like this... "y'all". It sort of rhymes with "shawl". If you'd like to learn to curse like we do down south, most 4 letter words are pronounced with 2 syllables.
Sam
