General Motors plans to invest $449 million in two factories in the Detroit area to build the next-generation Chevrolet Volt hybrid electric car and two unspecified new vehicles. The company said the investment would eventually bring a second shift at the Detroit assembly plant that makes the Volt and other cars. G.M. says it will invest $384 million at the assembly plant and $65 million in a battery pack plant in nearby Brownstown Township.
Plug Power Inc. (Nasdaq: PLUG - News), a leading provider of clean, reliable on-site energy, announced the sale of twelve GenCoreR backup fuel cell systems to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). "This sale marks completion of the first of several pending opportunities that we expect to close this year in accordance with our public milestone to triple GenCore orders," said Mark Sperry, Plug Power Chief Marketing Officer. "These systems will be deployed in the application for which GenCore was specifically designed."
The 5kW hydrogen-fueled GenCore fuel cell systems will be integrated with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) equipment to provide critical backup power to DEP offices throughout the state of Florida. Plug Power was chosen for its ability to deliver a total fuel cell system solution that includes training, service, hydrogen delivery, and a system durable enough to endure extreme weather conditions.
"The Florida hurricane season can create power challenges for our critical operations," said DEP Deputy Secretary for Regulatory Programs and Energy Allan Bedwell. "These state-of-the-art fuel cell systems use existing, proven technologies to deliver reliable backup power during service interruptions while providing cost-effective environmental benefits."
As a result of this purchase, Plug Power will now be listed as a supplier of backup power for the state of Florida, enabling all state agencies to procure and deploy GenCore systems. This listing complements Plug Power's recent agreements with the U.S. General Services Administration and the N.Y. State Office of General Services which allows federal and state agencies to purchase GenCore backup fuel cell systems directly from federal and state contract listings.
