Why I am selling my shiney Odyssey 1000 :
1) Firmware bugs became too annoying ("back" button not working after you select a song, no backlight when using Radio, VBR files cause track time to go crazy, "Line Out" isn't an unamped signal, delays between songs, lockups/reboots, etc etc)
2) no capability for remote, crappy case, no ID3 tag support, no search function, 13-15 seconds to boot up, scroller isn't speed-sensitive, VoiceNav functionality so limited that its worthless, big unattractive screws on side of player, Music Explorer software sucks, etc etc...
3) Music navigation is just too basic. If I want to look through "folders" I'd just use my PC and "File Explorer"
4) better players with more features due out in the next 2 months from iRiver, Samsung, RCA, Bantam, etc (see www.dapReview.com)
5) e.Digital will probably go out of business (according to the facts -income vs. expenditures- and thier own SEC filings), being then unable to honor warantee, update firmware, or replace batteries
6) Odyssey's price/performance is poor compared to Zen or iPod. The Zen, also using a 2.5" laptop drive, is the same size but with superior functionality for $100 less. The iPod, using the a top of the line 1.8" drive (more expensive), is 30% smaller and has a powerful music database, easily worth $100 more
7) Where is the Customer support? 6 weeks of not selling any Odysseys yet still not able to release firmware fixes? What are they doing over there?
LOL.. richmitchell is upset. Blame e.Digital, not the voice of reason.
Maybe the webcast is to announce they finally found the batteries for the Silhouette CD/MP3 player. You know, the same one Creative and Dinoeer have been selling for 6 months.
Where is the accountability for products promised but not delivered?

Sricket, don't worry there's no chance I will take you seriously. You may not like or agree with my reviews, but at least I put in the effort. You did... nothing... :D

Chuck, The Odyssey's battery isn't replaceable, unless you can show me some evidence otherwise. CNET said e.Digital claimed they will be able replace the battery in the future, but that's just a promise, and we know how good e.Dig is at keeping its promises. They can't even manage to stock a few Odysseys, so I doubt they have extra batteries! lol.. Regardless, getting the battery replaced won't be an issue if (when) they go out of business.
New iRiver MP3 players offer more features than the competition, like e.Digital

What happened to the Silhouette CD/MP3 player? The one where they claimed to have "a battery issue" that was never resolved. That's funny, because I've seen the EXACT same player for sale by Creative and others. How is that battery problems only plagued e.Digital, but not Creative or Dioneer? The picture of it still on the front of the e.Digital webpage lol!!

Tinroad, just trying to get this damn thing sold LOL.. it gave the whole forum a good laugh. However the crap I listed in that auction is just marketing BS. Obviously it's not worth keeping compared to the others I have. I mean, if I pointed out all the bugs, missing features, bad value, and that the company supporting it is almost bankrupt, well it would certainly would be a hard sell!
LOL.. sricket, oh please tell me how I am deceiving the buyer? You must be saying that what I listed ("this is one of the best digital audio players money can buy") is not true. Well buddy, you may be right. But, e.Digital and most of the longs here believe it is THE BEST DAP IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE, so that's the general point of view that I presented in the auction. I do, of course, want to to sell it before the new players from Samsung, iRiver, RCA, etc. are are out this month and next.
Tender.. Nope, not lying, just presenting a favorable opinion, even if it doesn't happen to be mine. Salesmanship and marketing is like that. If you are ignorant to this subject a search on google may help you.
Hey, thanks for helping me sell this POS. If you guys think it's so great, why don't you buy it. I know you guys are tickled, but the text in the auction is just there to get it sold of course :)
Daboss, at least apple guarantees the iPod for a full year. e.Dig only does 180 days, if they are even around that long.
e.Dig has no Odyssey 1000 to sell for 5 weeks now? What other income do they have to support operations?
Another new 20gb MP3 player. Intro price will be around US$400

USB2, 10gb, 105 x 59 x 18 mm, line-out, optical out, line in recording.
A player with all the functions of the NJB3 but it fits in your pocket. The line out and optical out will appeal to audiophiles. iRiver is a well known brand name in the MP3 player market, with the best-selling CD/MP3 player SlimX. iRiver products are sold at Best Buy, Circuit City and other national chains.
Tinroad, I think the investors deserve to know how the Odssey stacks up against the competition, since the companies future may well depend on it. If it has problems, or lacks features, it may not sell well. If it doesn't sell well, the company may fail. Basic stuff here. That doesn's seem "irrelevant" to me. If you disagree with something I've said about the Odyssey then why don't you refute it specifically?
How is Odyssey a more "sophisticated file management system" then iPod or Zen? I don't think you've done your homework on how iPod and Zen store files and database the ID3 tag info. Anyway, what matters is how useful the user interface is, not how it stores files. No one buys a $300 MP3 player for its file management system, they buy it to play music. iPod and Zen offer browsing and searching by songs, artsist, albums, genres, composers, etc. With Odyssey you can ONLY move around in directories. lol.. it's so basic in comparison. You seem really determined not to beleive me, so what you may want to do is find a store in your area with a good return policy, and go buy an iPod or Zen and compare it.
sricket, what exactley are you claiming is "slanted" ? Instead of making worthless generalizations be specific. Regardless, I never claimed I was an "expert" only that I have personal experience with several products like and including the Odyssey. I give my opinion based on its merits against the competition. Whether what I have to say is or isn't good news for your investment, doesn't make it any less legitimate. Feel free to go buy yourself some Mp3 players and debate it on an point for point basis. You would be better off to follow your own advice.
Tinroad, navigating the Zen isn't as intuitive as the iPod. The reason I think it's better suited for the techies is because the Zen functions around an on-the-fly Playlist, it's not just point and play like iPod. With the Zen you can simply point and play, but it adds the track to the playlist and puts as first priority. Normally you would just pick several artists of songs or albums, add them to the playlist and let it run through straight or randomly. I figured this would be more confusing that it really is. Case in point my girlfriend, who is not really into gadgets, has been using the Zen for more than a month at her job and she loves it. She likes the playlist so she can just load up the music she likes and have it only play that. I had to show her how to use it but she picked it up quickly and can whip through it now. I'll probably need to revise my website. There is no consipiracy against the Odyssey, by the way.
Sosoomee, I think doing any kind of searching would be dangerous while driving, skiing, or running. However, at least on the Zen and iPod, there are dynamic ways to search when you are not driving, skiing, or running.
Tinroad, the e.Digtial directory tree is in no way "a more sophisticated direction" as opposed to the browsing/search functions offered by iPod and Zen. The Odyssey is really simplistic in comparison, you can only manually look around in 2nd-level directories for tracks. It's not just an opinion, the ID3 support on iPod and Zen gives them significantly more advanced browsing and search functions. Howevever I agree with you that being different can be a good thing, and as I said before the directory-based navigation may appeal to some people. ID3 tag information is sometimes wrong on downloaded tracks but there's a million programs that you can use to change the ID3 tag fields to whatever you want. If you have all your tracks organized by file name you can use a program like "ID3 Tag Studio v.3" to covert all the filename fields to ID3 tag data in each file. If you rip a CD yourself, the program (like Audiocatalyst) usually gets ID3 data from CDDB.com so it's done automatically.
Sorry Berge, never said I was any expert, this is just a personal interest. However I do have several years experience with a dozen or so different MP3 players. So what's an expert anyway? Do you have as much experience?
Tinroad, navigating with the Zen is easy. You can search for and play music in many ways. From the Main Menu you can Select Music Library or Find Music. Then you choose to Artist, Album, Genre, Songs. Then it gives you a list of whatever you selected, alphabetically. The scroller is speed sensitive too so if you have 100 artists on the player you can get to the one you want really quickly.
What you were referring to is the "Find Music" function. For instance if you want to hear the Song "Strawberry Hill" you go to Find Music, Select Song, the it gives you the whole list of songs. You can then enter the first few letters of the song name using the scroller and an alphanumeric character popup box. Enter "Str" and it will send you right to that song. Damn nice feature.
So, if you understand all this, you see how limited the Odyssey is in comparison. It can't search or list songs by Artist, Album, Genre, Title, Composer, etc.. Like iPod, Zen and the rest. All you can do is navigate around directories. It's so basic it feels crippled next to the other players. So that's why I've made a big deal about it. At least a dozen people I've talked to bought another player just on this factor alone.
Tinroad, ID3 v2 tags simply provide more data fields and are more useful for desktop applications. Most of the extra fields you wouldn't need much on a portable. But I know the iPod supports v.2 tags because under "Browse" music from the main menu, you can choose to "Composers" and it lists all the tracks that have that tag data. The Composer field is a v.2-only data field. It's really nice feature for Classical music because there is much more information beyond the simple Artist/Album/Title. With Ipod and Zen you can search for songs by a number of methods, by title, artist, album, genre, etc.. It's a powerful feature that Odyssey lacks. Every player I've seen in the last few years supports at least ID3 v1 tags to display basic Artist/Album/Title information. Except e.Digital products of course.
Tinroad said :
"Austonia, just for clarification, when you refer to ID3 tag support, are you referring to the original ID3, ID3v1.1, or ID3v2? Also, how common is ID3v2 support among the players you have tested?"
Berge, can you make a case that the percentage of faulty iPods exceeds the percentage of faulty Treos? I'd love to hear this argument.
Berge said
"my original treo10 is about that old, and gets used 8-10 hours every day, thank god I didn't wait for the IPOD, I would be on my 2nd or 3rd one, the way the battery problems seem to be."
Hotrod, in case you havn't seen it yet, visit www.dapReview.com and click on the Odyssey you will be taken to a whole slew of pictures (79) I took myself of the Odyssey. Pretty much ends that argument.
Sunset, my review of the Odyssey is based on the features as compared to other DAPs. It's not a matter of opinion. Go get an Odyssey yourself and verify what I had to say about it. I mean how hard is that to comprehend. Of course e.Dig is a terrible inestment, that's as plain as day. That doesn't affect how the Odyssey that I have right here functions. It does have some bearing on the overall value of the player, of course. For instance, what if there are no firmware updates and what is now is all there is? That leaves some nasty problems. e.Dig did say there will be firmware updates, but with thier track record we can't believe any promise until it's delivered. Also, what if they go out of business? This is a very real possibility according to the facts and as stated by the company itself. Who will support it or honor the warantee? SO yes that does have to be a factor. Like i have to keep repeating THE FACTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. If you think my review is "slanted" in some way then name exactley what points are in contention and prove it.
Hotrod, you are saying that because someone has a negative comment about an e.Dig product, they must by lying? That's not reasonable on any level. I know it's fun to pretend but you don't know who has what product.
By the way, sorry about your MXP-100 purchase. It looks like a first-generation product. I mean not as ugly as the Treo of course, but close. However, there is one good thing about it, you don't have to worry about anyone stealing it. Ever.
Richy, you have a lot of conjecture about me but it just comes across as paranoia. If you can refute what I have to say about the Odyssey or e.Dig then do it. There's no conspiracy here, THE FACTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. If you have some point of debate then get to it, otherwise you're just wasting bandwidth.
Sunsetstrip, I have in fact critiqued other MP3 players, but don't take my word for it, check out my website www.dapReview.com. As far as who I send my reviews to, who cares? The topic at hand is E.DIGITAL and the ODYSSEY. Since I own an Odyssey, it is fitting that I share its problems with other people before they consider buying one. If someone else had one before me, I'd sure want to hear what they had to say. As is stands, I get a fair amount of email from people who see the website and I've been recommending people choose a different DAP then the Odyssey. The Nomad Zen has better price (by $100!) and on-the-fly playlisting, and iPod is 30% smaller with a much better interface. The extra features (VoiceNav, lol) are not worth speaking of, especially considering the features its missing (ID3 tags support? Hello?), and there is a handful of firmware bugs. Saying that e.Dig is PLANNING on fixing the problems won't convince me considering thier track record. All of this should be of interest to shareholders because the company's survival is largely dependant on the sales from this one product, at least for now.
Nope, not a disgruntled ex-shareholder, sorry. 5 minutes of research would give you all the information you need to know about this company and whether investing money here would be a smart idea.
LOLOL... as a matter of fact, please email my posts to CNET. Because they are ACCURATE descriptions of problems with the Odyssey and can be repeated with the player that CNET allready has. Sending my posts would make sure I didn't miss anything. Sorry about you paranoia, but I'm not making anything up. Maybe if you actually had an Odyssey yourself you would know that.
So if e.Dig hasn't been selling anything in the last month, where is the firmware update? What are they doing with all that free time. How about a patch for just the basic firmware issues.
I emailed the CNET editor the (long) list of bugs in the O1000 firmware. Hopefully he will revise his review. I allready confirmed them in 2 other players so its not just mine. Considering how late to market the Odyssey is it's really dissapointing they didn't spend a few minutes on beta testing. How did they miss the "back" button glitch? Unbelievable...
I found a new one the other day too. The line-out option doesn't actually give you a line out signal. Instead it simply sets the volume on MAX and disables the scroller volume control. Of course the whole point to line out is to get an UNAMPED signal. This is a feature that many audio nuts want, so thay can use a higher quality outboard amplifier. I took that off the list of its features at dapReview.com
