Genuity to Save 57 Percent in Telecom Costs With Internal Enterprise Voice over IP-TM- Implementation
Thursday September 5, 1:13 pm ET
WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 5, 2002--Genuity Inc., a leading provider of enterprise Internet Protocol (IP) networking services, today announced that the implementation of its Enterprise Voice over IP service at its Woburn headquarters will save the company an estimated 57 percent, or more than $300,000, in its overall telecom costs for 2002. By migrating its voice services from legacy to next-generation IP services, Genuity has been able to leverage its existing data infrastructure to carry voice traffic and dramatically reduce its overall expenditures on such items as voice circuits, minutes-of-use charges and other related expenses.
Through the implementation of Genuity's Enterprise Voice over IP service, a "typical" enterprise customer could potentially reduce its total data and telecommunications costs by an estimated 40 percent. The around-the-clock and global nature of Genuity's business, combined with its ability to implement the service without having to incur additional connectivity costs, resulted in the company's 57 percent annualized savings.
"We are extremely pleased with the initial results from the implementation of our Enterprise Voice over IP service for outbound calling," said Joe Farina, president and chief operating officer of Genuity. "We have been able to dramatically reduce our overall telecom spending, while still enjoying the type of high-quality voice and data services that businesses like ours demand. In an environment where all companies, including Genuity, are looking for immediate cost-savings, we are now able to show our customers and potential customers, from firsthand experience, the savings they can achieve by using Enterprise Voice over IP."
Genuity's implementation of the Enterprise Voice over IP service in Woburn was completed in February 2002. In addition, Genuity recently finalized the migration of its second-largest office, located in Lewisville, Texas, to the service for all of that facility's outbound calling. Genuity will also continue to extend the Enterprise Voice over IP service capabilities to its other office locations in the future.
Genuity's Enterprise Voice over IP integrates voice and data traffic onto a single, multi-protocol IP network infrastructure utilizing Genuity's Tier 1 IP backbone. A significant step forward in the convergence of voice and data services, Genuity's Enterprise Voice over IP service provides cost-effective, high-quality voice and data communication for enterprise customers and support for future IP-based applications.
Earlier this year, Genuity's Enterprise Voice over IP service was honored as a recipient of the prestigious TMC Labs Innovation Award for 2002. The award honors products and services that demonstrate raw innovation, unique features, and significant contributions toward improving communication technology.

Icahn Raises His XO Holdings to Participate in Restructuring
Thursday August 29, 2:11 am ET
By Kara Scannell, Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal
Billionaire financier Carl Icahn said he increased his holdings of XO Communications Inc.'s bank debt to 94%, giving him a powerful voice in XO's bankruptcy-court proceedings and assuring him a substantial ownership stake in the restructured telecommunications carrier.
Mr. Icahn, who already owns XO bonds with a face value of $750 million, launched a tender offer to acquire XO's senior secured loans in July. Wednesday, Mr. Icahn said he had agreements to acquire $947 million of the $1 billion face value in bank debt for a total of $500 million.
XO "has an excellent fiber network," said Mr. Icahn. "I obviously believe it is going to be one of the survivors." XO is a Reston, Va., provider of Internet and phone service to small businesses.
The development comes two days after XO won bankruptcy-court approval for a restructuring plan that requires Telefonos de Mexico SA and XO's largest investor, Forstmann Little & Co., to invest a total of $800 million for an 80% stake in the firm.
Theodore J. Forstmann, co-founder of the New York leveraged-buyout firm, already has $1.5 billion invested in XO. But after proposing the restructuring plan, Forstmann and Telmex now are trying to terminate it, citing deteriorating conditions throughout the telecom industry. XO filed for bankruptcy protection in June.
Unlike many telecom carriers that have entered bankruptcy proceedings, the prospects for XO's fiber network sparked a heated battle between Mr. Forstmann and Mr. Icahn.
Mr. Icahn, who launched a counter restructuring plan to Mr. Forstmann's, abandoned that offer for control of XO in May after being unable to reach an agreement with the banks.
But as conditions throughout the telecom industry worsened, bank holders became more willing to unload their debt, especially as the likelihood that the Forstmann-led plan, which was generous to the banks, wouldn't close.
Mr. Icahn, a corporate cage-rattler, stands to double his investment if the Forstmann-led plan goes through. Under that plan, holders of bank debt would be paid cash for the $1 billion in bank debt. Mr. Icahn has voted in favor of the Forstmann-led plan.
If the Forstmann-Telmex plan doesn't go through, under a backup plan that is still being negotiated, Mr. Icahn would emerge as the controlling shareholder of XO, with about a 95% equity stake in the restructured company. Bondholders would get the remaining 5% in XO equity plus some warrants.

NEWS Key3Media Group, Inc.-Digital Rights Management and Piracy Debate Spotlighted At Seybold San Francisco 2002
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2002 8:34 AM
- Canadian Corporate News
FOSTER CITY, CALIFORNIA, Aug 28, 2002 (CCNMatthews via COMTEX) -- Seybold San Francisco 2002
Seybold San Francisco 2002, a Key3Media Group, Inc., (KMED) event will address the controversial topic of Digital Rights Management (DRM) and piracy protection. The Digital Rights Management Day: Preventing Piracy and Leveraging Premium Content Online takes place September 10, 2002, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. at the Moscone Center, San Francisco.
DRM means defining, protecting and licensing intellectual property rights in the digital world. It has become controversial because control over information usage stirs debate around the definition of fair use, and consumer's rights to copy and share digital files. In a split session entitled 'The Antipiracy Wars,' Bill Rosenblatt and two panels of experts will look at both the problem and some of the solutions to the conflict between owners and consumers of digital information and entertainment.
The most controversial issue surrounding the DRM debate is the pressure from industry and government groups to require rights management systems to be built into devices like computers and televisions, which consumer groups argue could make legitimate uses more difficult or even impossible. Companies like Apple, Intel and others have been vocal in their insistence that rights management is a marketplace issue and that technology products should not become the enforcer of licensing and copyright regulations.
"The debate in Congress over legislation is now primarily about requiring copy-protection features in all digital media devices," said Bill Rosenblatt, President, GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies. "Several pending bills would mandate their inclusion in all digital media rendering devices, and would allow media firms virtually free reign in hacking into Internet servers suspected of harboring pirated material. Technology organizations become indignant at these pieces of legislation, calling them unfair constraints on innovation and consumer choice; meanwhile, legal experts wonder whether DRM technology can really coexist with the copyright laws in their current form."
Whether you are a publisher interested in protecting intellectual property, a company concerned about your use of copyrighted material, or a consumer fearful of possible restrictions on your use of information, at Seybold San Francisco 2002, you can hear more on these topics as well as see the latest in rights-management systems. Bill Rosenblatt will spearhead discussions surrounding current antipiracy wars -- problems and solutions, DRM case studies and applying the technology to corporate enterprises and publishers.

These statements are intended to qualify for the safe harbors from liability provided by the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. You can find many (but not all) of these statements by looking for words like "will", "may", "believes", "expects", "anticipates", "plans" and "estimates" and for similar expressions. Because forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainties, there are many factors that could cause Key3Media's actual results to differ materially from those expressed or implied in this release. These include, but are not limited to, economic conditions generally and in the information technology industry in particular; the timing of Key3Media's events and their popularity with exhibitors, sponsors and attendees; technological changes and developments; intellectual property rights; competition; capital expenditures; and factors impacting Key3Media's international operations. In addition, the IT industry has experienced a significant downturn since the middle of 2001 and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 have adversely affected the economy generally and significantly decreased air travel in particular. These developments have and will continue to adversely affect participation and attendance at Key3Media's events, although the Company is not able to quantify or reliably estimate the future impact that these matters may have on its businesses, results of operations or financial condition. The sections entitled "Item 1. Business - Certain Factors That May Affect our Businesses" and "Item 7. Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations" in the Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2001 filed by Key3Media with the SEC contain important cautionary statements and a discussion of many of the factors that could materially affect the accuracy of Key3Media's forward-looking statements and/or adversely affect its business, results of operations and financial position. These statements and discussions, as well as any others contained in Key3Media's other SEC public filings, are incorporated herein by reference. Key3Media does not plan to update any forward-looking statements.

IT Security Serves as Cornerstone Theme At NetWorld+Interop and COMDEX Atlanta 2002
Security Issues, Vendors and Technologies Infuse Educational Sessions, Interactive Exhibits and Show Floor Pavilions
Tuesday August 27, 9:03 am ET
LOS ANGELES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 27, 2002-- Heralding security as the top-ranked area of interest among show attendees at NetWorld+Interop and COMDEX conferences, Key3Media Group, Inc. (OTCBB:KMED - News) announced today that NetWorld+Interop and COMDEX Atlanta 2002 will feature security issues, vendors and technologies as a cornerstone theme. The weeklong conference and exhibition convenes September 9-13, 2002, at the Georgia World Congress Center.
NetWorld+Interop and COMDEX Atlanta will feature the industry's top and emerging security technology companies, including Check Point, Internet Security Systems, 2C Computing, 8e6 Technologies, Intelligent Computer Solutions, Masterclock, Inc., Micromuse, Inc., Secos, Spirent Communications, NetScreen, ReefEdge, Inc., Astaro Corporation, SonicWALL Inc., Intruvert Networks, Inc., Shavlik Technologies, Avocent, Bluesocket, Digital Envoy, Intermec Technologies Corporation, Radware Inc., Simplesoft, and Vernier Networks, Inc. The Atlanta event brings buyers and sellers of networking products, technologies and services together to do business, receive world-class education and put innovation to work through a broad array of cutting-edge interactive exhibits and show floor demonstrations.
"At NetWorld+Interop and COMDEX 2002 Atlanta, we strive to give attendees what they want. According to pre-registration surveys, security ranked the number one interest area for attendees coming to the event, with 50% looking for security products to purchase," said Valerie Williamson, Interop brand president for Key3Media Events. "Our focus on security technologies will be pervasive throughout the event; on the exhibit floor, in the educational sessions and throughout the interactive technology pavilions and demonstrations on the InteropNet. This year's show is ideally suited for technology buyers to access the most comprehensive contingent of security vendors, educational sessions, solutions and exhibits available at a single event."
Attendees at NetWorld+Interop 2002 Atlanta will experience dedicated floor space on security, including the Security Zone, where vendors will showcase vanguard technologies -- from firewalls to encryption; authentication to virus protection; biometrics to VPN security. Additionally, the InteropNet Labs (iLabs) will feature the Wireless LAN Security Initiative. As WLAN products have exploded onto the networking scene, security vulnerabilities have been exposed. The iLabs WLAN Security Initiative will address these issues and build a next generation, secured wireless network utilizing 802.1x, extensible authentication protocol (EAP) and IPsec. These solutions are featured in an open environment staffed by industry engineers and in free iLabs classes offered throughout the conference.
"I have attended many NetWorld+Interop shows in the past and have been able to interactively discover many new technologies," said Emilio G. Perez, CW3, USA of the U.S. Army Reserve Command, Chief Local Area Network. "I am a touch and demo type person and being able to observe the many vendors and demo their products in Atlanta will be very useful to me. Many times until you see a product in action you really don't know what its possibilities are."
Real network security threats require hard work and hard knowledge to plan for and thwart. At NetWorld+Interop and COMDEX Atlanta 2002, a huge menu of classes and workshops are designed to teach defenses against unwanted digital intrusions including:
The Interop Conference Security track features two days of in depth sessions
InfoSecurity University, a feature of the COMDEX Business Technology Conference, includes two full days of sessions on proven security strategies
The COMDEX Hard-Core Technical Conference features a full day of sessions on Windows .NET security
VPN Day 1 and VPN Day 2 provide practical knowledge on building real-world IPsec-based VPNs and integrating them into your network infrastructure.
Strategic Interop features a session on implementing effective security and turning business requirements into networking requirements.
Network Forensics Day introduces cutting-edge solutions to today's most challenging network and network security issues. Top network analysts from PMG NetAnalyst, with their experience working in hundreds of enterprise environments, lead the sessions.
NetWorld+Interop and COMDEX Atlanta 2002 is the East Coast's premier technology event focusing on today's hottest industry topics. In addition to security, the Atlanta event will focus on three other technology cornerstones, including wireless, storage, and VoIP. The weeklong event takes place September 9-13, 2002 at the Georgia World Congress Center. British and U.S. planes strike Iraqi targets
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain confirmed Thursday that U.S. and British fighter aircraft had struck targets in southern Iraq earlier this week but said it was not aware of any casualties.
"Coalition aircraft were in operation in the southern no-fly zones over Iraq late Tuesday. Self-defense action was taken against a mobile tracking radar unit which had locked onto our aircraft," a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said.
Iraqi Air Force Command said earlier Thursday the planes had bombed civilian and service targets shortly before midnight Wednesday in the provinces of Missan and al-Wassit, wounding four civilians. It also said its air defenses had fired at the attacking aircraft.
But the British spokesman said he knew of no casualties: "We are not aware of any casualties and we take absolute care in all our operations to limit any casualties."
The raid was the first in 10 days and the 26th strike of the year by U.S. and British attack jets in northern and southern "no-fly zones" of Iraq, established after the 1991 Gulf War to protect the Kurds of the north and the Shi'ite Muslims in the south from attack by Baghdad forces.
The tit-for-tat exchanges have increased in recent months amid mounting threats from President Bush to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Washington accuses Baghdad of developing chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.
Iraq denies the charge and Saddam has said any U.S. invasion on his country is doomed to fail.
