Another Panther Glitch
FileVault displays a message saying it can reclaim lost disk space in the encrypted directory -- this is where the problems start. If you let FileVault reclaim this lost space, you could run into problems after you restart.
FileVault does appear to work just fine as long as the user does not attempt to reclaim disk space when FileVault gives that option.
"Apple is aware that some customers have reported an issue when using FileVault's 'reclaim used space' feature," said Apple in the statement. "Apple is investigating these reports and any customers with questions should contact AppleCare."

OT: Dean's The Right Man for the Job
Fi and Blue, Great to know some other Dean Supporters. Met Dean at the rally at Copley Square in Boston recently and will be attending a Rock the Vote Rally next Tuesday. I've attended some of the grassroots meetups and you would be surprised how many moderate to liberal republicans that are supporting Dean. Dean is the only candidate that understands that we have to change our national priorities. He also knows that real change can only come from an American grassroots movement. An Fi your right ...The Media, The republicans, The Democratic Leadership and the Pundits still don't get it. Beyond the Presedential election I urge you all to Vote against anyone that supports the current administrations empty headed policies.
OT: Economic: Trick or Treat
Roni, A good percentage of the 7.2 % GDP is deficeit spending given to Haliburton, Becktel, Worldcom and numerous other American defense contractors from our massive Federal debt.
If we had a robust economy the fed would have tightened the money supply and raised interest rates.
We are in a Wartime economy without any meaningful Job growth and the IOU's will eventually catch-up to us in higher taxes or fees down the road. If this economic situation is not corrected soon and the Boomers begin to retire the tax rates will have to go up or federal spending will have to take massive cuts.
Just as Iraq has become a quagmire our economy is headed in the same direction. Just don't count on Social Security, Medicare or Job security because the current White House and Congress will bleed this country dry.
PPC 980 3 GHZ Rumor
An unconfirmed report spelling out some interesting future possibilities about Apple and their PowerPC progress and development:
"Following the microprocessor forum, IBM presented Apple with a handful of PPC 980 alpha samples to begin work on the next generation Powermac due out in 9-12 months. Initial compiler tests showed specfp base 2000 of 1400 and specint of 1200 at 3Ghz. The PPC 980 will have double the L2 cache of the 970, and will still not have an L3 cache option, owing to the fact that the 980 will have a 1x, 2x, 3x, and 4x bus multiplier, which will allow an FSB to run at the chip clock speed if need be, but the plans are to stick to a 2x multiplier, which would mean a 1.5Ghz FSB. The reason why the 980 is appearing only 12 -16 months after the 970 is that Apple chose to engage in parallel development with the Power 5, rather than wait 12-18 months after the fact. The 980 samples that were given to Apple were 90nm chips, as opposed to 130nm chips for the PPC 970 and the Power 5.

Upgrading Kats
Cotton, If I didn't have to support so many early adopters I would stay with Jaguar 10.2.8. Only three Panther features compel me to upgrade 1.) The Profile Switching Feature 2.) The Font management Software, and 3.) The bash shell in the terminal. Its hard to justify the $129.00 upgrade price but alot cheaper than a new system.
I'm speaking as an average casual user and the lust factor is just not there for me this time. It leaves me wondering if I am the only one who is happy with the way things currently are. I know I won't be the only one, though. My friend who bought the G-4 a couple of months ago is happier than a dog chewing on a bone, but he is oblivious to all this stuff. He will be on 10.2.8 ten years from now.
Altaire4 ....... Big Kat Dance.
G4 iBooks ..... Sweet
Reality Check: My Two Plus year old Ti G4 Powerbook at 400 mhz runs better now than when I first bought it. The improvements in OS X to 10.2.8 have made my Powerbook a work horse. So an 800 mhz G4 iBook with enough Ram would be a very capable system. I just prefer the Powerbook Form factor. I think this is great news and I expect this will help to shore up Apples education marketshare.

And thats why the WMA codecs will most likely be dead within a year. Just like Microsoft sells MS Office to leverage its Windoze OS; Apple's iTunes for Windows will leverage Windows users to purchase iPods and maybe even some G5 systems. Kind of diabolical ...... ha. Follwup: Apple Migration
Its official 12", 15" Powerbooks, Dual 2 GHZ G5's and 17" iMac's are now recommended hardware along side the Dell hardware at my organization. We've been testing out a Dual 2 GHZ G5 and have been blown away by its performance. Our IT upper management has worked very hard to lobby the company department heads to migrate to new Apple OS X systems and it looks like we are well on our way to winning them over.
Time to get on the stick with Panther 10.3.
After five years of migrating away from Apple systems to Windows boxes the organization I work for is now reaching a point of reversing the trend.

Phantom 64 bit Comparison ..... Bogus !!!
Lang that PeeCee article is just plain bogus.
1. It fails to mention what Operating System the AMD 64 Alienware system is running. Since Microsoft is not shipping a 64 bit version of Windows how could I purchase this system. Since most of Microsofts OS versions act like betas what would a beta version of windows be like ?
2. In many of the charts it compares the AMD 64 system to the G5 Dual 2 Gig with unequal technical specs.
G5 Dual 2 Gig with 128 MB of memory and a standard drive versus AMD 64 Alienware with 256 Mb of memory and a Raid drive setup.
Whats wrong with this picture ?
An AMD 64 bit Alienware raid system with twice the physical ram and a Phantom 64 bit Operating System. Doesn't sound like a valid 64 bit G5 comparison to me.
I personally think that AMD makes a great chip and I would love to see a fair comparison to the new G5's. Unfortunately this isn't it.

24 -25 is the next leg up for AAPL
Z, I don't see 30 yet. Unless G5, Xserve and Laptop sales start to drive up Apples market share. I think that 24 - 25 is the next leg up based on iTunes for Windows and iPod sales. New education sales could catapult us to 25 - 26 dollars a share range. I would watch for an APPLE deal with the Michigan School system as a bellweather for a significant jump in the stock price. Its all very positive and its clear that Apple is making inroads in areas of the market that have been entrenched with Microsoft products for the last decade.
Altaire4 ..... AAPL is clearly on a growth path now !!!
Apple Laptop Market Share Rising
Apple achieved its largest slice this century of the worldwide notebook market in 2003's second quarter, analyst firm IDC has exclusively told Macworld UK.
The company took 4.1 per cent of the world's notebook market in the quarter – up from 3.5 per cent in the previous quarter, and 3.7 per cent year-on-year. Apple is the number-nine notebook vendor worldwide.
Apple also took 7.0 per cent of the US notebook market in the quarter. IDC said worldwide notebook sales rose 22.4 per cent year-on-year in the quarter, while US shipments grew 18 per cent year-on-year.

On the verge of migrating to Apple Systems
After five years of migrating away from Apple systems to Windows boxes the organization I work for is now reaching a point of reversing the trend. One of our Windows only departments got hit with Sobig which interrupted a very highly lucrative contract for over three days. Since that time the head of the project has jumped on board the Apple bandwagon. Upper management is now pressing the other department managers to migrate back to Apple systems. My evangelism after all these years appears to be finally paying off. In the meantime our team is trying to keep the windows systems safe until we can role out new Apple systems. Its going to be a very interesting transition - this is way overdue.
Altaire4 ...... looking forward to the migration.
You won't find brilliance in Spreadsheets.
BTW, when you say, "would this have happened without Steve Jobs ... I don't think so" I wonder what you think would have happened if Steve Jobs had been killed in a plane crash and Fred Anderson was elevated to interim CEO. Do you think Fred would have just sat there like a bump on a log and not either negotiated the purchase of Moto's microprocessor division or done a deal with IBM? Are you under the impression that there was anything Jobs did in those meetings or negotiations that would not have been done by anyone in his position with even a modicum of intelligence and skill?
Lang, Fred is a brillant accountant but lacks the technical savvy to run a company like APPLE. While companies like Dell and Gateway are content to reverse engineer known PC designs(Example: Compare The Dell Latitude and the Apple G3 Wallstreet design) Apple continues to focus on re-engineering and improving Apple's System designs.
It takes a special person to coordinate and direct a Technical and Managerial staff to produce outrageously good hardware and software designs, on time, and on budget .... which will sell. All you have to do is look at the lame Apple system designs that came out after the Mac II CX then compare those designs to those after Jobs return.
Who was in charge of Apple during the time they started losing massive share of the PC market ? Sculley, Spindler and Amelio ...... so its important to understand what Jobs contributes to Apple besides his ego.
I think that Jobs has been successful at differentiating Apple, based on both system design and software. A huge feat when competing up against MSFT and Intel.
Jobs was smart not to get into the CPU fabrication business. Its a tough business and expensive to stay ahead of the curve. Look to Sun,Moto and IBM to learn why fabricating CPU designs is a tough business.
Altaire4 .... Go AAPL !!!
Lang you have a warped sense of history
Two names are responsible for Apples failure to produce a Modern Operating and none end with the last name Jobs. Michael Spindler and Gil Amelio. At least Amelio was smart enough to buy Jobs Next's Open Step as a basis for what is now known as OS X.
It was the rift between Motorola and IBM that delayed the development of more advanced Power PC Risc processors. In the end Motorola's Altivec has proven to be extremely valuable to APPLE, thats why the IBM 970 adopted a similar Vector processor. Many new developments in processor design and manufacturing also contributed to the numerous delays but that is ancient history.
Apple has a 64 bit processor with 32 bit backwards compatability now. This puts APPLE ahead of Intel in the CPU marketplace with the lone exception of AMD. Would this have happened without Steve Jobs ... I don't think so.
Altaire4 .... Go
Jobs is the Driving force behind APPLE
Lang and Cotton,
I'm not a big Steve Jobs fan. Yes, Jobs has an ego the size of California. Putting his ego aside for a moment, had Jobs not returned to Apple we would not have 64 bit IBM 970 G5's or the most well designed and useful laptops and systems on the market. Apple would have ceased to be a relevant player in the PeeCee market a long time ago.
When you factor in that his options are tied into the performance of the company he is worth every penny.
How many companies in your portfolio have CEO's that have little or no stake in the companies they manage ?
Jobs already has a very successful company called Pixar we are lucky that Job's has taken a personal interest in the company he and Wozniak started.
As for the IBM 970 3 Ghz processor date slip, Jobs has no control over when they will ship. At least Jobs is honest about what he believes the timetable will be to his customers.
Apple today is now competive on performance thanks to Steve Jobs. A year from now that performance may very well eclipse the PeeCee competition. As Apple continues to grow its cumulative share of the market .... eventually economies of scale will allow APPLE to sell systems at lower prices.

OT: Dean needs To Make a House Call
Blue, In the last Democratic debate Lieberman and Kerry tried to paint Dean as someone who would not support Israel. Dean has stated time an again that he wants the US to be an honest broker between Israelis and the Palestinians. Dean is the only grassroots candidate and has pulled way up front. Interesting enough, both Kerry and Lieberman voted to give G Dubyya Carte Blanche for the current Iraqi adventure.

Equity Trading is Very Subjective
BTW, sound unbiased analysis has nothing to do with "glass half empty" or "glass half full". That's just pejorative language used when people aren't willing to discuss or debate on facts. Bears who say "well that's just rose-colored glasses" are equally guilty.
lang, the difference between a Bear and a Bull can be summed up in the simple water glass analogy ... if your in the market for the long haul ? The fact that you can use different analytical facts or formulas is in itself subjective. Data can be skewed to come to the conclusion an individual seeks. How much Apple is going to make this quarter is not as important as how the company positions itsself to be profitable for the forseeable future. Selling systems in volume like Dell is not as important as having healthy margins and quality products. I suspect, Apple makes more money percentage wise on its iPods than it does on its consumer iMac's or EMac's. At the end of the day its a matter of profit and product loyalty not just the cheapest price. I also know from personal experience that their is alot of pent up demand for Apple's products now. When people come up to me and ask what kind of Apple system should I buy I usually have a good answer for them.
From a trading perspective I have never lost a penny from trading Apple shares... ever. Understanding the health of a company from a spreadsheet is one thing but understanding the true worth of a company is another.
Trading shares in any market has an inherent risk especially if you only factor in the spreadsheet of a company. Look at Enron as an example of how data can be manipulated. What was more important to examine was the character, integrity and ethics of the CEO not the spreadsheet. That's subjective, but many people would not have been burned if they had only taken the time to understand the character of the man behind Enron.
Altaire4 .... Out
Is the Glass Half Empty ?
Lang, I believe that the 22 - 23 dollar range is what Apple is currently worth. I can see some upside from here with iTunes for Windows, New G5's and new Powerbooks. A reality check is always a good thing and I'm always looking to see the other side of an issue. I still haven't seen a cogent reason for the sell rating but if it drops back into the teens i'll be happy to throw more money into AAPL.
Maybe, I'm wrong about this, but I don't see the reasons for the downgrade ?
Smith Barney Sell Rating
One of the things I've noticed about some of the brokerage firms that drives me insane is market manipulation. The Smith Barney Sell rating is not warranted. It appears to me as a means to lower the entry point for them to buy in. Maybe, I'm wrong about this, but I don't see the reasons for the downgrade ?
