How about the thread gives you a pass on eating your board and instead give us all surfing lessons? (When your back is ready, of course!)
OT Maybe I should go see him when he comes to town. check out those hands. (Bo Diddley)
OT I thought Bo Diddley was one of the fathers of Rock n Roll. Remember the Bo Diddley beat?
RIMM earnings on the 28th.
After I read that post I realized there was more substance to the matter. :(
I remember having envy that my GG shares took a hit on the merger news while GLG rose significantly. I sold my GLG earlier, and probably bought NG with the money, so I didn't make out too bad.
I appreciate the postings.
BasserDan, Is the battle between these two guys (McEwen and Telfer) just a pissing match in your opinion? McEwen seems to make some good points....
McEwen certainly has that entrepreneurial spirit.
Newly, I believe Roach is speaking in relative terms as he is comparing the economies of the four countries. He later notes that Brazil does have a healthy export component, although between the four countries, they come in 3rd in exports. Since Brazil has the lowest overall growth of the four countries this makes sense to me.
<<However, in recent years, Brazil’s external dependency has risen significantly, with the export share of its GDP more than doubling from 6.2% in 1996 to 14.9% in 2005. And primary products accounted for fully 34% of its total merchandise exports last year ...>>
OT Hopefully my allocations at Kistler aren't reduced because of your sticky fingers! :)
Never tasted grapes from the field. Must be fun.
A most scenic road is through Valley of the Moon, but too many cars for a nice bike ride.
Something a little more on-topic...
I found it interesting that in the June issue of "SmartMoney" that proclaimed contrarian, Dave Dreman had DVN and COP among his picks. They were at $60.16 and $67.31 respectively, at the time. He liked the "enormous cash flow" of the oil companies. Also noted was the reduction in debt as a % of market cap in DVN and the low PE of COP.
<<Don't think it can't happen here, it can!>>
Newly, I was introduced to that concept not all that long ago. I remember when BasserDan wrote about (or linked an article on) a very intrusive survey -- something like the American blah blah blah survey. The questions were quite personal and they knew who was doing the answering. In addition, there are significant penalties for not responding. I said, that can't be true. But I found out it certainly was true when that same survey showed up on my doorstep not even a year later. I complained to my congressman, who indicated he was against the survey, but was no help to me. Of course the survey is for "good" - actually a way to "show" what communities need the re-distribution of wealth.
Watch out for the gangs in Rio, Newly. Besides, how are you going to get all your gold and silver over there? ;)
I'll print out your response and play with charts tomorrow. I'd love to be able to make a worthwhile contribution.
how did you know I was playing with fire on RIMM? ;)
On that note, it is time to get some rest. Charts can wait. (Gee how long have I've been saying that, but maybe tomorrow is the day!)
Just replaced the engine in an '89 Chevy truck. I'd rather spend my money on an new Audi. Can't decide between an A4 or A6.
Thanks 2Mars, your charts are quite clear to me and I understand OB and OS (in part thanks to your previous postings). However, I fail in the being able to chart myself territory. I do not subscribe to stockcharts and the charts I get from cybertrader on Schwab I handle poorly. (I don't think they are quite right either but I haven't had the chance to figure it out.) At any rate I am more of a longer term/swing person anyway.
As far as BIDU, how would one know to cash in that wonderful short for those 7-8 points? Seems much easier after the fact. Hopefully you were able to pull in that coin.
Thanks to you for your contributions. I wonder where you get the energy. You must be young. LOL.
Landm19, I'm not much of a TA person, although I see the value in it and I do pick up bits from people time to time. Lately you have made a great effort in educating many of us, a noble pursuit. However, I must admit that I can not read your charts very well. There are too many lines for me. Maybe it is the over 40-year-old eyes.
At any rate, thank you for your contributions. I just wish I was smart enough to follow them.
Shasta
Zeev, just noticed that APCC has been getting some interest as of late. Do you still follow this one?
Sorry to hear about your back Pantera. Get well soon. As you can see, you were missed in these parts.
Sounds reasonable - I can wait for that rally in Nov-Dec. :)
And thank you once again for your valuable insights.
Thanks for thinking of me on USGL. So, inquiring minds want to know, are you buying? :)
I believe Mossberg has always preferred the Palm products to the blackberries.
Nice job! I covered my RIMM short yesterday, but I still made some money. Wish I had your staying power.
<<It seems that someone is very interested in some good news to bring down oil prices before the mid-term elections. But now I'm sounding paranoid.>>
Sounds like the perfect explanation to me for the latest news coverage.
Joe, thanks for checking on Sonders. I usually don't read her reports, but I happened to catch the one prior. Interesting that she was negative on energy back in Dec '05. I can see being cautious on energy plays now, but I'm trying to learn more about the sector. I agree with Pantera that there are many opportunities between market dynamics, geopolitical risks and weather, to move these stocks to the upside.
By the way, you can call me Sha, Shasta, See, etc for short. SS sounds really bad to me. :)
Didn't Sonders say the same thing a month ago? It seems as though she is early. Time will tell.
VERY sweet on DVN. Congratulations on the strike!
So are you going to take some off the table or do you still see upside here?
OT, this "babe" is back from fun and games up in Ashland/Jacksonville Oregon. Now its back to "work". :)
So many good stock ideas, its difficult to choose, so I'm doing nothing for now. Waiting for Au to drop so I can pick up some of those jrs.
Holy smokes! Good job on DVN!
It looks as though I missed some fun banter here this weekend.
I guess you could say I have a core holding in NEM. I just haven't touched it. I'm not much of a trader, so the juniors would be no problem for me to hold.
I remember the stress in selling a home. Being in limbo also is a pain. Hang in there Newly, and hopefully a buyer will show up soon.
<<What is lasik/prk surgery? Is that where they fix your eyes so you don't need glasses any longer?>> Exactly. Lasik is for the lucky ones, but my corneas are/might be too thin for my huge nearsightedness, so the older version, PRK is the other candidate, with a longer rehab time. Unfortunately, those of us after 40 or so need glasses anyway unless we do monovision (one eye distance, one eye for reading) and that only delays the need for glasses (unless another surgery comes along).
Newly, not feeling right just yet? Wow, that pox has really got you. Is that typical? The forehead scar, if it happens, will eventually fade, but it takes awhile. I hate being sick too - I feel for you.
Maybe a big trading win will help take some of the pain away. :) I wouldn't mind if NEM just decided to take off higher. Speaking of Au, I am thinking of adding to my positions. BasserDan makes a compelling case for the juniors.
OT The eye is doing much better, thanks. The "divot" is over 90% healed. Pink eye is long gone. Hopefully I threw out the right mascara! Today is the second day I have worn contacts for a little while. I have also seen four doctors in regards to lasik/prk surgery and they each have different recommendations. Its crazy.
Did you ever figure out where you got the chicken pox from? I take it that the marks are very slight at this point.
Thanks, Since you didn't list USGL in your list to Joe, I was guessing it wouldn't show up on your favorites list. Looking for confirmation I guess...
Thanks much BasserDan! Would you add any USGL here?
Basserdan, any thoughts on USGL? I haven't seen anything in the news lately. Is the plan dead to acquire those 4 companies? Thanks.
PS I still appreciate all your mining posts and "introducing" me to Ron Paul.
Hey Guz, UNH is looking a lot better these days! I'm finally in the black. I hope you are too (or have been).
I was just going to ask your opinion on that one! DRQ
OK you have my vote! 80 sounds good to me.
Thanks to you for putting DO on my radar. I guess I'll let that winner run a little. :)
Whats your plan for DO? Is it a longer term hold for you? Thanks.
OT Zentman, I am afraid you aren't the one who isn't getting it. How do you know they're exactly the comps you want if you can't rely on the size, # of bedrooms, etc. If you want a wide, unreliable range then zillow will work for you. I'm done cluttering up the board with this. Good luck with your sale.
