New Magnesium Alloy iMac Rumor
The next generation of the “New iMac” that Apple Computer is going to launch in the first quarter of next year will have a magnesium-alloy case and a high proportion of plastic parts for cost reduction, according to sources in Taiwan’s IT industry.

with DRM and encryption, its hard for large organizations to switch to alternatives when your legacy data formats are proprietary and your work force uses MS Office almost exclusively.
Mac OS 9 has no command line terminal and very little in the way of Security and Virus issues. I prefer OS X because its much more stable and efficient in processing data.

Have you noticed that when ever Great news happens for Dean. The first response by both Democratic and Republican pundits is Clinton's this and Clinton's that. I think this is all apart of driving a wedge through Democratic party unity. Despite issues with the DNC the objective is still to beat GW Bush. All politician's have political ambitions ... yeah even the Clinton's.
What really should be discussed is how the Republican's have deviated from their promises. Yeah we got our tax cut ... but how about reducing the cost of Big government. How has the federal government gotten smaller. What about Medicare spending ? How are we going to pay for all this and the War on Terror.
Heck, even Newt Gingrich disagrees with the current administration on iraq.

OT: Absurd: Paying Microsoft to deal with Security Holes.
Lisa, ok ... Update Servers .... Hackers don't care who they hurt just that they take down the largest amount of systems. Frankly, I don't need that kind of hassle, when better alternatives exist. Personal Computers we're designed to share information, trying doing that with Windows systems today, never mind financial transactions. OS X is a choice just as Linux and Free BSD with X11 and Gnome/KDE are a choice. No Dieties involved. My advise to my Windows colleagues is Use a good Firewall, AntiVirus software, use the Microsoft Windows Update web site and USE 9 digit Alpa Numeric passwords with SSL or PGP encryption. If your unwilling to do these basic things then expect your system can be compromised. Despite all of this, Web sites can still be used to deliver a fatal blow to your system. Then ask yourself, is it worth what Microsoft charges for these kinds of issues. The choice is yours ? I think you already know my answer.

Lisa, have you ever considered what would happen if the Windows Update server was high jacked for say an hour. The fallout could knockout Millions of systems. So it all boils down to a matter of trust. Security has never been Microsoft's strong suit.

Lang tell us what you really think ?
Linda, I'm currently using Fidelity Investments, their trading fees range from $19.00 (limit Orders) - $14.99 (Market Orders). If I started trading more often I could get the price down to as little as $8.00 a trade. Since I'm focused on mid to long term stock investments my needs are simple.
Linda, That's great news.

Mass Market Apple Strategy
Apple could mass market to the budget PC consumer and education markets with a more conventional desktop by differing the Brand name. It would have to run windows, linux applications and iTunes (Like Lindows); This would replace the eMac and iBook line. An AMD, intel or IBM processor design could be used which would leverage Darwin, windows and Linux Open source applications. Price this line betwen $299.00 - $699.00 and watch the fur fly.
The second generation G5 Pro Towers should all be marketed to the High-End as Duals and Quads, a G5 flat panel iMac would be a ProSumer prestige middle tier product. The Powerbooks are perfect the way they are, a G5 processor would be nice but would require a redesign to deal with both heat and Power consumption.
The introduction of a new headless mac system (like the cube) priced below the iMac and above the new PC Consumer line would appeal to those who hate the current iMac Design but want a G5 entry Level Mac.
This new strategy would differ the product line in a way that it would not cannabilize G5 sales and give Apple some clout in the market.
Apple needs to be aggressive on Price
Dell which has a relatively poor record for reliability (1 in 4 need service) for its Latitude laptop systems consistenly sells them for less and offers its biggest customers a Three year service contract. You know that they must be losing some cash on this deal but the point is they are Selling these systems in volumes that Apple only dreams of. Dell is willing to sacrifice some dough for a larger piece of the pie.
The G5 gives Apple the technological edge they have needed to break out of their PC niche. Jobs and company need to be bold and capitalize on this edge soon because Intel will deliver a new technology within 2004 to marginalize both the G5 and the Opteron. Count on it !!
That all said my Three your old Ti Powerbook is the most reliable piece of hardware I have ever used with the exception of my Mac II FX built in 1986 (still useful for doing Web graphics). The Dell Latitude laptops are not as reliable, but they don't have to be, its good enough and cheap enough for Joe Six-Pack and that translates into larger Market Share and profits.
Until Apple is willing to market to that larger segment of the market, where price is king, most investors and analysts will consider Apple an innovative little player in a much bigger playground that gets held up for its lunch money by mediocre bullies.
inverse is right
Since Microsoft's success in marginalizing Apple's Original OS with Windows the vast majority of people under estimate that APPLE can break beyond their die-hard niche. They have come to this conclusion because time and again Apple has created new markets which they then lose to competitors because their prices are usually too high for Joe six-pack.
Examples: The Newton, The iPod
What should Apple do ?
The G5 technology should be pushed into a consumer product ASAP to grab a larger share of the consumer market.
Establish a new lowend line of PC's which would run Windows applications priced to sell to the masses for under $600.00 per unit.
The Current G5's Towers should all be duals and quads and marketed as High End Workstations and servers.
Sell a low end iPod to the masses !!!
I'd like my iPod to come in any color but White.
I'm waiting for the model that has a cigarette lighter and espresso spout
Apple Way ahead of the Technology Curve
Bootz, I'm familiar with some of the IT personnel that maintain those boards and your suspicions are dead on. They are unobjective x86 Microsoft PeeCee zealots that have financial motivations to see Microsoft succeed. I find that most experienced Apple users are much fairer in objectively assessing technologies because we expect alot more from our applications and our hardware. Our PC colleagues are all swooning because Microsloth is finally getting around to implimenting a Pop-Up blocker in Internet Explorer. Gee, a little behind the technology curve don't you think ?

OT: Dean Can take the Shrub
Dill, Similar statements have been made by contemporaries of both FDR and Lincoln and in both cases where wrong. GDubbya can barely put together coherent sentences. In fact, when Dean gets the nomination I suspect GDubbya's campaign will want to limit any and all presidential debates relying on Political ADs to control the message. Dean will call him out taking his message to the people and then you will see who gets humiliated.
OT: National Sales Tax
Tex, I think taxing consumption could do a lot of positive things. A national sales tax implemented correctly could be a fairer way of having everyone pick up the tab. It would also place an incentive for people to save some of their income as well.
I think that funding educational systems based on local property taxes is absurd. The poorer neighborhoods will always have substandard schools that way. A national sales tax of between 1- 2 % could very well fund public education school systems in all 50 States.
The attractiveness of making a sales tax (coupled with a monthly refund of tax which would be paid on the standard deduction, so that the poor don't get overtaxed, else the system would be horribly regressive) rather than an income tax is that the tax affects the price of goods bought here, not the cost to make the goods, assuming we don't tax manufacturers on their materials. In Texas, we run mostly on a sales tax (no income tax here), and lots of raw foods are untaxed entirely. If you cook your own food, your taxes are mostly collected when you buy and (re)register your car, and when you own property (or rent it from a taxpaying property owner). Eat out a lot? Pay lots of tax.Taxing consumption seems a way to tax the wealthy more while not taxing people any more than they "deserve" -- and taxing all illegal and income the moment it gets spent. Any thoughts on whether we're better off taxing incomes or taxing consumption on a national level?

OT: We had International Cooperation on Germany
Herb, you cannot paint all Arabs or islamists as the enemy when the problem is a small amount of extremists. Its estimated that over 10,000 Iraqi civilians have perished in the recent conflict. These people have suffered enough under Saddam's rule. Since our so called victory in iraq, extremists from all of the Arab worlds have converged their. We need international cooperation to root out these extremists. This administrations bungling of foreign policy turned the Post 911 goodwill in Europe into hostile disdain and trade sanctions. It will take a new administration to broker the cooperation we will need to make some headway in the war against terrorism. In the meantime we will continue to mortgage our future in both American Blood and Money.
Lets also remember that time is running out on those 'haters of Jews and women." Russian oil will be hitting the US market in five years; big time. The Arab world hasn't been successful putting their petro dollars to work for their own people.
OT: Healthy Debate on Economics
Nickel based on the number of Off Topic posts relating to the issue of our National Debt that followed. It seems my post has stirred up some debate. I think this is healthy, I'm NO economist by any means and find the different viewpoints posed on this subject educational. An interesting irony, I find myself agreeing with Langostino on the debt issue.
OT: What about American Roadside assistance ?
Tex, Hyundai can offer roadside assistance and inexpensive vehicles because they use cheap labor.
How can American companies compete with the Hyundai's of this world ?
That is the root of all our current economic dilemma. If we cannot answer that question we will end up a second rate economy overwhelmed with domestic problems at home.
Has anybody on this board ever wondered what would happen to our financial markets if foreign interests divested themselves of our debt. That's the fine line we walk as the trade deficeit continues to grow.
I'm all for Free Trade if it was truly a level playing field, but it isn't.

Apple Product Changes
Blue & Linda, I think Apple pads their prices on the iMac Consumer line knowing full well that they will be discounted by 100 - 200 dollars. I'm hoping that the 20"/23" inch Apple Display's drop by a couple of hundred for X'Mas. I don't think these minor changes will have an impact on Apple's Stock price.

OS X vs Linux Redux
Actually, the desktop market as we have come to know it is about to fade away as its functions are replaced by small wireless devices and laptops.
Kevin that's a very astute observation.
I do disagree on linux as a viable desktop OS; It all depends on the type of users and the type of devices used. I work for an R&D outfit that is mainly made up of "Computer Geeks" adoption of Linux in some departments has already happened. I do know that the average consumer would not consider Linux "User friendly". Mac OS X has a major advantage over linux in the development and "ease" of use categories.
Some OS X Advise
Clear, I ran into this issue with my iMac with a previous version of Jaguar. I'm running 10.2.8 with all the previous updates and the issue went away. The 192.68.xx.xx IP address is a maintenace IP that is used when a regular dhcp IP address is not available. A duplicate IP on your Lan might cause this issue from occurring. Update your system and turn on your Firewall if you are on a high speed cable network. Email me at altaire42_0@yahoo.ca for more specific information.
10.3 Bash Shell aimed at Linux users.
Roni, When you consider that Panther 10.3 now uses Bash as the default Terminal Shell that is common on Linux systems you begin to understand that Linux also has a shot at the desktop market. I still think that when you compare Gnome/Kde to Apple's Aqua interface OS X wins hands down. Still, some shops may leverage inexpensive x86 hardware with Linux to replace desktop systems. The other OS that many people may use is the forthcoming Java Desktop OS coming from SUN next month. It looks like Windows is going to have some serious competition for the desktop space next year. I still believe that Apple can double its desktop share in the near future .... Apple could accelerate the process if it would negotiate large discounts for Panther 10.3 for Mid-Size to Large businesses.
PC Replacement Cycle
Nickel, I wish I had your confidence in a Tech rebound. I don't see much in the way of spectacular growth in the PC market for at least Twelve more months. The interest is their but some people are starting to find themselves running short on disposable income. Some IT departments are slapping Linux on these older PC systems and realize they can get another year out of them.

OT: Destructive Religious Rhetoric
An example of Religious rhetoric used for destructive purposes.
EVIDENCE OMAR ALIVE
The voice on the tape sounded similar to that of Mullah Omar
and if authentic would be the most recent confirmation that he is
still alive and actively involved in the Taliban revival.
According to Sama, the five- to six-minute speech was
addressed to a 10-member council the Taliban says was set up in
late June to better coordinate anti-U.S. attacks.
Over 350 people have been killed in a wave of bloodshed in
Afghanistan since early August, much of it linked to the Taliban.
Other militant forces are also believed to be active, including
al Qaeda and renegade warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.
The tape also featured a longer speech from an unknown
Taliban commander.
"If you have strong faith and have strong honour you should
stand up to protect your country and your religion," the voice
purporting to be Omar said, speaking in the Pashto language
spoken on the Afghan and Pakistani side of their common frontier.
"Every Muslim should ponder and awaken his honour and protect
Islam and the Koran and, God-willing, if he dies, it will be a
great success and if he lives then it will also be a victory."
The tape was handed to Reuters in Spin Boldak, a southern
Afghan town near the border with Pakistan where Taliban
guerrillas are believed to be active.
It was delivered at a time when Afghan President Hamid
Karzai's government has said it is considering opening a dialogue
with more moderate elements of the Taliban and Hekmatyar's party.
