Fake Google Site Hides Trojan Horse John E. Dunn, Techworld.com
Fri Jul 21, 11:00 AM ET
Scammers have set up an exact copy of the download page for Google's Toolbar plug-in in an attempt to lure users to download a Trojan backdoor.
Reported by security outfit Surfcontrol, some versions of the scam even spoof the correct Google Toolbar web address for Internet Explorer, using Google's own redirection service in an attempt to hide the real, non-Google address.
The Trojan itself--W32.Ranky.FW--is designed to turn the PC into a bot zombie, and is spread using the conventional technique of asking recipients of a spam e-mail to follow an embedded link.
According to Surfcontrol, the version detected by the company fails because of poor programming of defective compilation, but it remains a proof-of-concept in how to attack users using a simple combination of convincing elements.
Clever Combination
Outwardly simple, the scam has a clever combination of tricks. Although using parts of established Web sites is standard in phishing scams, it is relatively unusual to go to the length of reproducing en entire page precisely, in combination with a convincingly-spoofed web address.
The fact that the spammed e-mail appears to come from Google could convince recipients to follow the link.
Assuming that a re-engineered version appears--highly likely--once infected, users will notice nothing untoward, although their PCs will have become part of a bot-controlled network.
Google has been attacked in similar way before. Last September, scammers faked the Google search page itself in order to aid the spread of a worm.
More recently, a Trojan attacked the company's adsense advertisements, replacing them, in-browser, with fake ones on any PC infected with the malware.

A Professor was giving a lecture on "Involuntary Muscular Contractions" to his first year medical students. Realizing that this was not the most riveting subject, the Professor decided to give an example his students could relate to.
He pointed to a young woman in the front row and said, "Do you know what your ass hole is doing while you're having an orgasm?" She replied, "He's probably golfing with his friends."
Two young boys walk into a pharmacy one day, pick out a box of Tampax and proceed to the checkout counter. The man at the counter asks the older boy, "Son, how old are you?"
"Eight," the boy replies.
The man continues, "Do you know what these are used for?"
"Not exactly," the boy says. "But they aren't for me. They're for him. He's my brother. He's four. We saw on TV that if you use these you would be able to swim and ride a bike. Right now he can't do either one."

Python gulps queen-size electric blanket Wed Jul 19, 7:05 PM ET
KETCHUM, Idaho - It took surgery to save a 12-foot Burmese python after it swallowed an entire queen-size electric blanket — with the electrical cord and control box.
The blanket must have gotten tangled up in the snake's rabbit dinner, owner Karl Beznoska said. He kept the blanket in the cage to keep the 60-pound reptile, named Houdini, warm.
"Somehow, he was able to unplug the electric cord," Beznoska said Wednesday. "He at least wasn't hooked up to the power. It might have been pretty warm there."
Veterinarian Karsten Fostvedt conducted a two-hour operation on the python Tuesday, and said afterward, "The prognosis is great."
Neither Fostvedt nor fellow veterinarian Barry Rathfon had operated on a snake before. "We just basically called a couple of specialists and they told us where to go in," Fostvedt said.
X-rays showed the tangle of the blanket's wiring extending through about 8 feet of the python's digestive tract. The surgery to remove it took an 18-inch incision.
Specialists at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine told them it probably would have taken Houdini six hours to swallow the blanket and the snake probably would have died without the operation.
Beznoska, a retired ski instructor who now works as a draftsman and carpenter, is from Austria and moved to the resort

JMCP Diversified Ethanol, a Division of James Monroe Capital, Begins Discussions on Ethanol Plant Mergers
Wednesday July 19, 12:25 pm ET
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 2006--Diversified Ethanol, a division of James Monroe Capital Corporation (Pink Sheets:JMCP - News), today announced that it has entered into discussions with multiple ethanol and bio diesel plant owners for potential mergers or acquisitions.
The company intends to acquire or merge alternative fuel producers under the Diversified Ethanol umbrella thus becoming a major producer and supplier of alternative fuels.
Starting last May, more and more refiners have been adding ethanol into regular gas, and dropping the popular additive MTBE, which is used to make gasoline burn cleaner. The additive may cause cancer, and Congress has declined to offer refiners protection from the legal liabilities that may stem from the use of MTBE, 45 states have enacted policies to stimulate ethanol production and consumption, and it has been mandated in some States already. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 requires gasoline producers to nearly double the use of renewable fuels, mostly ethanol, by 2012.
Gas consumption has been increasing every year, while we haven't built a new refinery since the 1970's. Ethanol will fill part of this void, as refineries blend it in. Auto makers Ford and General Motors are ramping up promotion of flex vehicles that run on 85% ethanol, known as E85. This demand has been noticed by prominent visionaries of the future such as Bill Gates, who purchased $84 million dollars worth of ethanol related investments.
"Diversified Ethanol will allow these plants to operate independently but with the backing of the parent public company, this will allow better pricing on supplies and cut production costs and related expenses as we grow," said CEO Taylor Moffitt.
Moffitt added, "I drove to work today in a car fueled by E85 made from corn. The cost of the fuel is less and the emissions are lower, it gave me a sense of being environmentally friendly while being non-dependent on foreign oil."

Governor: Big Dig bolts unreliable
Romney says more than 1,400 trouble spots need reinforcement
Monday, July 17, 2006; Posted: 9:54 p.m. EDT (01:54 GMT)
BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Gov. Mitt Romney said Monday that tests show more than 1,100 bolt assemblies that used epoxy and more than 300 other areas in a Big Dig connector tunnel where the ceiling collapsed are unreliable.
Romney, speaking at a Statehouse news conference where he drew charts and diagrams of the trouble spots, said all will have to be reinforced.
"In grabbing ahold of these bolts and pulling on them with excess force, they're letting go ... at lower pressures than they were designed to handle," Romney said.
"That suggests that this epoxy system is not working ... and for that reason we can't count on it," he said.
Last week, days after 12 tons of ceiling panels came loose and fell on a car, killing a passenger, the governor announced that inspections had found at least 242 points where bolts were separating from the tunnel roof.
Two Big Dig tunnels have since been closed and Romney has not yet cleared the way for them to reopen.
The $14.6 billion Big Dig -- the most expensive highway project in U.S. history -- buried a highway network that used to slice through the city, replacing it with a series of tunnels.
The project also has been plagued by leaks, falling debris, cost overruns, delays and problems linked to faulty construction.
Attorney General Tom Reilly, who is considering filing involuntary manslaughter charges in the ceiling collapse, said Monday that investigators had discovered documents showing there was a "substantial dispute" from 1999 to 2000 over whether the design of the tunnel was adequate to hold the weight of the 3-ton ceiling panels.
Reilly, who refused to give specifics, said he did not know how the dispute was resolved. He said the tunnel designer, the contractor and the company overseeing the Big Dig project were involved but would not say who raised the questions.
The contractor on the tunnel, Modern Continental Construction Co., issued a statement saying it was cooperating with the investigation and is "confident that our work fully complied with the plans and specifications provided by the Central Artery Tunnel Project."
Messages left with project manager Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff and tunnel designer Gannett Fleming were not immediately returned.
Commuters on Monday endured increased traffic hassles with the closing of a second tunnel ramp connecting two interstates. It was closed Sunday after testing showed dozens of problems with the bolts holding up the ceiling. That ramp had been used as part of a detour around the accident scene.
Romney said engineers successfully tested a system to reinforce the bolts.
Romney met earlier in the day with congressional, state and city leaders to outline his plan for traffic and to ensure the safe reopening of the tunnels. After the meeting, Sens. John Kerry and Edward M. Kennedy endorsed the governor's plans.
Kennedy said congressional committees are making plans to hold hearings into the tunnel collapse and the Big Dig project.
"We want to make sure the issue of safety is front and center," Kennedy said.

US aircraft carrier in S.Korea amid missile crisis Mon Jul 17, 11:03 PM ET
PUSAN, South Korea (Reuters) - A U.S. aircraft carrier group arrived in South Korea on Tuesday amid heightened regional tension brought about by North Korea's test-launch of missiles two weeks ago.
The group led by the nuclear-powered carrier USS Enterprise, and including a guided missile cruiser, attack submarine and other ships, arrived for a previously planned port call at the southeastern city of Pusan, the U.S. Navy said in a statement.
"The Norfolk, Virginia-based carrier's deployment to the Western Pacific was planned months in advance and is not in response to any current or recent events," the statement said.
U.S. military officials would not say how long the naval strike group would be in Pusan, but local media said it would stay for four days.
North Korea defied international warnings and test-fired seven missiles on July 5, including the long-range Taepodong-2 which some experts say could possibly hit parts of the United States

Bush frustration sparks expletive
Monday, July 17, 2006; Posted: 10:13 a.m. EDT (14:13 GMT)
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) -- U.S. President George W. Bush expressed his frustration over the situation in the Middle East by using an expletive in comments to British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg Monday.
Not realizing his remarks were being picked up by a microphone at the summit of world leaders, Bush bluntly expressed his frustration with the actions of Hezbollah.
"See, the irony is what they really need to do is to get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this (expletive)," Bush told Blair in a discussion before the Group of Eight leaders began their lunch. (Watch raw footage of the Bush, Blair exchange -- 1:31)
Bush's remarks were picked up by the summit's closed-circuit television, which was filming the leaders sitting down to eat.
Normally, the images are transmitted with sound that does not allow reporters to pick out individual comments. But in this case a microphone picked up Bush's comments to Blair.
Blair, whose remarks were not as clearly heard, appeared to be pressing Bush about the importance of getting international peacekeepers into the region.

Beer baron loses license for drunken driving
Saturday, July 15, 2006; Posted: 10:23 p.m. EDT (02:23 GMT)
Beer baron Peter Coors' driver's license has been revoked
DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Beer baron Peter Coors' driver's license has been revoked by a hearing officer who ruled the executive had been driving under the influence of alcohol, officials said.
Hearing officer Scott Garber ruled Friday that Coors did not stop at a stop sign on May 28 and was driving intoxicated.
Coors, 59, said he had consumed a beer about 30 minutes before leaving a wedding, the Rocky Mountain News reported Saturday. He faces a July 20 arraignment and has 30 days to appeal the revocation.
"I made a mistake. I should have planned ahead for a ride," Coors said in a statement. "For years, I've advocated the responsible use of our company's products."
Coors' spokeswoman, Kabira Hatland, said Coors was charged with driving while under the influence. Coors' lawyer, Steve Higgens, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Hatland said that Coors rolled through a stop sign a block from his home in Golden and that an officer stopped him in his driveway.
In one breath test, he registered a blood alcohol level of 0.073 percent. In a second, 20 minutes later, he registered 0.088. In Colorado a blood alcohol count of 0.05 results in a driving while impaired charge, while a count of 0.08 results in driving under the influence.
Legal analyst Scott Robinson said drivers with no previous alcohol convictions are usually held to have driven while impaired, rather than the more serious driving while under the influence. A DWI finding can result in a loss of driving privileges for 90 days; DUI can result in suspension for a year.
Peter Coors "has never even had a moving violation," said Coors spokeswoman Kabira Hatland.
Coors took over as president of his family's company in 1987 and in 2000 was named chief executive of the brewer, with 8,500 employees and $4 billion in sales in 2003. Following a 2005 merger, it is now the Molson Coors Brewing Co
Tsunami hits Indonesia's Java, at least 5 dead By Achmad Sukarsono
1 hour, 14 minutes ago
JAKARTA (Reuters) - A strong undersea earthquake struck off the southern coast of Indonesia's Java island on Monday, triggering a tsunami that swept away wooden buildings and killed at least five people, officials said.
There were no reports of casualties or damage in any other country.
The search for victims was continuing, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told a news conference, adding that five people were known to have died.
"An earthquake has happened and then was followed by a tsunami on the southern coast of Ciamis (regency)," he said.
"It has been reported to me that five people have been declared dead and the search is still going on to find those who probably have been swept away by the tsunami waves."
A tsunami warning for Java's southern coast and nearby Christmas Island, to the south of the Indonesian archipelago, was issued by the U.S.-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. Police on Christmas Island, owned by Australia, said there was no damage there.
India also issued a warning for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which were badly hit by the 2004 tsunami, but officials said there was no real threat. The Maldives, a low-lying chain of islands to the southwest of India, also issued a warning.
A massive earthquake in December 2004 triggered a tsunami that left 170,000 people killed or missing in Indonesia's Aceh province. Tens of thousands more died elsewhere, the majority in Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
On Monday, a policeman at Pangandaran Beach near Indonesia's Ciamis town, around 270 km (168 miles) southeast of Jakarta, told Metro TV that six deaths had been recorded but the toll could be much higher.
"Everything looks like a mess. Buildings on the southern coast have been damaged. Only permanent buildings are still standing," said the policeman, called Agus.
The area is a popular local tourist spot with many small hotels on the beach and is close to a nature reserve.
The waves washed away wooden cottages and kiosks lining the shoreline facing the Indian Ocean, witnesses told local media.
"I think there will be a lot of fatalities because probably they are buried under rubble. The road to the scene is covered by rubbish brought by the waves," the policeman added.
PANIC
"We were in panic and running. Almost an entire village was inundated by water. All people were running to the mountain," a villager in the area told Metro TV.
A woman who said she was a witness had earlier told Jakarta-based Radio Elshinta that waves came several hundred metres inland at Pangandaran Beach.
Hendri Subakti, head seismologist at the West Java earthquake center, told Reuters the waves were a maximum of 1.5 metres high.
Some people were still fleeing the coastal area hours later as rumours spread that there could be another quake and tsunami.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had said the quake, which hit at 0819 GMT, was of 7.2 magnitude.
Indonesia's state meteorology and geophysics agency initially rated the quake at 5.5 magnitude, but later changed that to 6.8, and said there were two significant aftershocks.
An official at the country's main fixed line operator, Telkom, said the phone system in the area was down.
Some occupants of high-rise Jakarta buildings felt the quake, which had an epicentre more than 40 kilometres under the Indian Ocean 180 km off Pangandaran beach, and fled their offices.
Earthquakes are frequent in Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country. In May, an earthquake near the central Java city of Yogyakarta killed more than 5,700 people.
Indonesia's 17,000 islands sprawl along a belt of intense volcanic and seismic activity, part of what is called the "Pacific Ring of Fire."
The Pertamina state oil company's 348,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) Cilacap refinery was not affected by the quake and tsunami, a Pertamina official said.
"The refinery is operating as usual. There were rising waves, but now the water has receded," the official said.

Ethanol's public profile rose significantly last July when Congress passed an energy bill that mandates the doubling of biofuels output by 2012. In January, President Bush gave the industry a further boost with a strong endorsement in his State of the Union speech. And with the imminent phase out of a petrochemical added to gasoline to reduce tailpipe emissions, more U.S. motorists will depend on the corn-derived fuel more than ever before. In some markets, wholesale prices for ethanol have surged to roughly $2.75 a gallon or more, according to the Oil Price Information Service of Wall, N.J. Because ethanol makes up about a tenth of every gallon of unleaded gasoline with which it is blended, it is great for ethanol producers and distributors.
Diversified Ethanol's new corporate headquarters is located in the heart of ethanol country: Iowa. "We needed to be right in the middle of the Midwest ethanol plants. As we work on ethanol mergers and acquisitions, it is a significant advantage to be established within the ethanol community. Being in Iowa, it will give us first hand knowledge and information about the key players and producers within the industry. Therefore we can prepare for future trends in the ethanol industry, even before the crop reports come out. The company anticipates this strategy will enhance the company's competitiveness within the market," stated Taylor Moffitt, CEO.
Moffitt also stated, "Friday, light crude oil futures reached a high of $79.45 a barrel on NYM September futures, which could be a record, due to the escalating violence in the Middle East and damage to Nigerian pipelines that threaten to cut off supplies. The demand for ethanol will increase substantially as the demand for oil rises."

I am attaching an article about a possible cure for this dreaded disease. This company has received little or no exposure about this possible cure, and know that you, if anyone would be able to find out if this is true. Many people believe that because Sickle cell is a predominate African American disease that it will not get the exposure that it desires. I have watched you through out your career here in Cleveland and have come to respect your reporting honesty. I am supplying you with a few links that might help you decide if this is truly a wonder drug or just a scam.
Thank You

The Russian wrestling team and American wrestling team are having a 5-on-5 exhibition match. Both teams are down to their final wrestlers, tied at two wins apiece. The remaining American wrestler is 5'10", 175lbs., and his Russian counterpart is 6'7", 300lbs and all muscle. The American coach sends his wrestler into the match with little hope of winning. As expected, the Russian has with way with the American. Suddenly, the American explosively turns the match around, pins the Russian, and gains the victory for the American team.
The American wrestler returns to the sidelines where the coach asks him, "Son, how were you able to defeat that big Russian? Honestly, I didn't give you much of a chance."
The wrestler says, "Well, coach, when he had me down on the ground all rolled up, I saw a pair of nuts dangling in front of my face, and I just bit them as hard as I could."
The coach is shocked. "That's how you beat him?!"
"Hell yeah!" the wrestler says. "You'd be surprised what you can do when you bite your own nuts!"

Energy Vision International Announces New Installation for Its Patented DeMarco Energy Miser Geothermal System
Wednesday July 12, 10:57 am ET
OXFORD, Miss., July 12, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Energy Vision International (Other OTC:EGVI.PK - News), a rapidly growing diversified energy company, was awarded a contract to install the new 6-ton / 2-stage DeMarco Energy Miser Heat Pump geothermal system. EGVI's subsidiary American Geothermal secured the contract and will perform the installation.
Installation of the system has begun on a newly constructed 4,000sq ft home north of San Antonio, TX. The home will feature a 6-Ton / 2 Stage DeMarco Energy Miser geothermal system. The system acts as a 4-ton unit during lower air temperatures and switches to 6-tons in hot conditions. This translates into less electricity usage through intelligent design. The Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) for the new DeMarco system is 21.8, which is considered very high on the EER rating scale.
Victor DeMarco, CEO of EGVI's subsidiary American Geothermal, commented, ``The growing demand for geothermal heating and cooling is the driving force behind design engineers improving the technology for the benefit of the consumer. Our challenge is to push the EER ratings to the maximum limits and in so doing further increase the incredible energy savings presently enjoyed by our customers.''
Chairman of EVI, Anthony Welch, added, ``We expect to meet or exceed our expectations for 2006. We have promised profitable revenues and continuous growth. We continue to deliver by today's announcement. Our expected sales for the remainder of 2006 and through 2007 create great enthusiasm throughout the company. Demand for our energy conserving geothermal solutions has never been higher.''
About the Company
Energy Vision International grows through energy-related acquisitions, marketing its patented geothermal water-air heating/cooling systems, and sales of energy conservation solutions. The company has three subsidiaries at present with plans for more.
The company's subsidiary, DeMarco Energy Systems of America, Inc.
