Dana White at UFC 69 teleconference
Apr 02, 2007 - 2:05PM
A few quick notes from a UFC 69 telephone press conference:
*UFC president Dana White had strong words for Floyd Mayweather's recent disrespectful comments about mixed martial arts: "He says he wants to pay Chuck Liddell a million dollars to fight with a heavyweight boxer and see if he'll last. How about this? How about we pay Floyd a million dollars to fight MMA and see how long he lasts. Or even better ... I'll give him a million dollars of my own money if he boxes anyone other than Oscar (De La Hoya) and more than 10 people buy tickets."
Mayweather was quoted in an article on the boxing Web site Thesweetscience.com as saying: “UFC ain’t s--,. It ain’t but a fad. Anyone can put a tattoo on their head and get in a street fight. We should put Liddell against a good heavyweight, under Mayweather Promotions, and if Chuck wins, then I’ll give him a million dollars out of my own pocket. These are guys who couldn’t make it in boxing."
*White also slapped down a boxing-based writer who criticized MMA fighters for their boxing technique, claiming their footwork was "wrong." White patiently explained that unlike a boxer, an MMA competitor also needs to be watching for other forms of strikes, or a potential takedown, and thus need to set up their punches differently than boxers.
*White said it could take as long as a year before we see matchups with PRIDE vs. UFC fighters.
*He said they're looking at August or September for a potential Randy Couture vs. Mirko Cro Cop match.
---------------------------------------------------------
Dana White on PRIDE: ‘I run everything’
During a conference call earlier today with national media to discuss UFC 69, Dana White departed from recent statements that he will not run PRIDE FC, inferring that he will indeed be involved with steering the promotion.
We weren’t invited to participate in the call (sob), so we’ll lean on Steve Seivert at the Houston Chronicle and Loretta Hunt at FightNetwork.com for all the particulars.
Here’s a snip from the UFC President vis-à-vis the Chronicle:
“PRIDE is still going to be a Japanese organization. PRIDE is going to be run the way PRIDE was. I’m, obviously, ramping up the American side of it, and I am going to do what I do in America. I run everything.”
And similar statements from White courtesy of Ms. Hunt:
“Though it was announced at last week’s press conference in Japan that the newly-formed PRIDE Worldwide Holdings LLC. would be run separately from the UFC, White conceded he’ll have some say in its direction. ‘I run everything,’ White quipped, explaining the company will keep its Japanese employees and remain Japanese-run, though he would ‘amp up the American side.’”
Not too shocking, considering White admitted to being a “control freak” during the session. It’s unclear, however, as to the reasons behind the shift in public statements.
Perhaps the Fertittas and Dream Stage Entertainment (DSE) President and CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara agreed that it was best to ensure that the recent acquisition did not become the Dana White show.
Regardless, it was naïve to think that White wouldn’t be pulling the strings to some degree, whether it was overt or behind closed doors.
There are a lot of other goodies contained within both write ups, including when to expect the “SuperBowl of MMA” (sometime next year), the UFC will only award one contract during the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (in previous seasons two fighters earned six-figure deals), as well as more on the HBO and ESPN deals (announcers aren’t the sticking point, according to White, it’s the overall production).
Nealgalt-There must be something very big coming, for them to go and clean up the records.
It's like people will clean house before visitors arrive (at least I behave like that)......lol
LOL-with strawberry something-wasn't that the flavor...:o} You are too funny!!!
Mebbeee those twin's prediction is starting to show...:o}

The active stock (BKMP) is more positive, you may want to hold it for a while. Then in the end of the reading I wanted some more input on BKMP so I told her that stock is related to UFC (just wanted to see how she would react) and she said: Oooh that is huge. If you can get in on the ground floor of any UFC, it will grow in leaps and bounds and there is huge money there. I have a much better feeling with that stock for you and it will continue to grow........................

UFC Owners Buy Mixed Martial Arts Rival
By ADAM GOLDMAN 03.27.07, 6:24 AM ET
The majority owners of Ultimate Fighting Championship have agreed to buy their biggest mixed martial arts rival, Pride Fighting Championships, in a deal that will establish megafights among the outfits' titleholders and possibly attract huge pay-per-view audiences.
Company executives declined to comment on the sales price, but a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta will purchase the Japan-based Pride for less than $70 million. The person was not authorized to speak to reporters and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The deal was completed Tuesday and was announced during a news conference in Tokyo, where Lorenzo Fertitta has been negotiating with Nobuyuki Sakakibara, the majority owner and chief executive of Dream Stage Entertainment Inc., Pride's owner.
"We have been talking to Pride for probably about 11 months," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "It's been a long, drawn out process but we finally we were able to put the two brands together."
To buy the company, the brothers created a new entity called Pride FC Worldwide Holdings LLC. The newly formed company will take over Pride assets, including its trademarks, video library and valuable roster of fighters, from Dream Stage. The Fertitta brothers, who own Las Vegas-based Zuffa LLC, the parent company of UFC, intend to keep the well-known Pride name and promote fights under that brand.
The acquisition marks a new phase in the brothers' quest to dominate the burgeoning world of mixed martial arts since they bought the struggling UFC in 2001.
"This is really going to change the face of MMA," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "Literally creating a sport that could be as big around the world as soccer. I liken it somewhat to when the NFC and AFC came together to create the NFL."
The deal allows the Fertitta brothers to broker the biggest MMA fights possible in the near future, increasing their influence in this sports entertainment business.
"We will be able to literally put on the fights that everyone wants to see," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "It will allow us to put on some of the biggest fights ever."
In the past, there has been at least one case in which Pride and UFC couldn't hammer out a deal to put their top fighters in the ring together. With Pride in their pocket, the Fertitta brothers intend to ensure that never happens again.
The sale gives Pride more financial backing to expand the business internationally after suffering a recent financial blow.
Major sponsor Fuji Television Network Inc. dropped Pride in June after a tabloid linked Pride to the Japanese mob - something Sakakibara has denied vigorously. To help bolster Pride, the company staged two PPV fights in Las Vegas. Neither was a financial success. The fights gained exposure for Pride but lost money, making the sale of Pride more likely.
"I think it certainly weakened their position," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "One of our goals is to get back on a major platform back here in Japan."
Lorenzo Fertitta said he'll be looking to expand Pride internationally.
Buying Pride is the latest in a series of acquisitions that the brothers have made in the last six months. Zuffa snapped up World Extreme Cagefighting and World Fighting Alliance last year.
Similar to Pride, buying WFA gave UFC the rights to a popular fighter named Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Jackson will face UFC's most popular fighter, Chuck Liddell, the current light heavyweight champ in Las Vegas, on May 26 on PPV.
In the combat world, the Pride deal leaves a fragmented group of upstarts and K-1, another Japanese company that promotes fighters skilled in various forms of kick boxing.
Thanks to a surge in popularity, the brothers' investment in UFC and MMA in general has begun to pay off.
Last year, UFC cracked $200 million in PPV revenue, putting it on par with World Wrestling Entertainment (nyse: WWE - news - people ) Inc.
UFC stages fights in arenas across the country and airs a clutch of successful television shows on Spike TV. It has also opened an office in London, looking toward establishing itself internationally.
The brothers also run Station Casinos Inc. (nyse: STN - news - people ) in Las Vegas. Lorenzo Fertitta is president and Frank Fertitta is chairman and chief executive of Station Casinos, a public company that was recently purchased by a private equity investor group that includes key members of the Fertitta family.
WOW did you predict that webpro?

QBID sure was a downer, this is what she said:
She said: "I don't feel this idle stock will benefit you this year or suddenly start doing better, you should sell it". Later on in the reading I brought it up just to nail it down some more and she said:"You have lost a lot of money with this investment, I don't like the feeling no-no-no not a good vibe there".
Us psychics are NOT right 100%, so I still hold hope......:o}
Bud Fox-It was the second time investments came up that I mention the name, first time she said the idling stock is going to be successful. I have to transcribe the tape to tell you exactly.
I will post the words she used about BKMP as soon as I get it typed. Might take some time (hoping tonight), but I might be busy working. I will post it though.....:o}
Holi moli she got absolutely excited about the Fightnetwork. I am rewinding the tape, can't go through it yet, but she said QBID was a dud. She said it was going to make oodles of money. When I retace word for word, it will take a few hours to do the typing etc. But BKMP was coming up as the winner......She was amazing, picked up my grandmas name, going to Vegas.....so many things, and din't say a beep first.
Okidoki..:o}

PANAMERSA Corporation (PNMS) Partner DESIMPLEX to Supply New Trading Software to the Newly Formed PDR Exchange (Panama), Inc.
Monday March 19, 12:49 pm ET
DALLAS, TX and PANAMA CITY--(MARKET WIRE)--Mar 19, 2007 -- PANAMERSA Corporation (Other OTC:PNMS.PK - News) announces Partner DESIMPLEX is in the final Beta testing of PDR trading software to be used by the newly formed Stock Trading company PDR Exchange (Panama), Inc.

PDR Exchange (Panama), Inc. will be an operating company of Fundacion Pan America and will be the engine used to trade receipts issued by Fundacion Pan America. Known as a Pan American Depository Receipt (PDR), it allows beneficial owners of the Fundacion to buy and sell PDRs online anywhere in the world. This will in effect create a private trading system that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to anyone in the world who has a computer and is a beneficiary of the Fundacion. The beauty of the system is it completely eliminates any naked shorting or manipulation of Share Price (PPS) by brokers and market makers, while giving the individual beneficiary complete anonymity.
PANAMERSA Corporation (PNMS) CEO Mike Terrell stated, "The completion of this software coupled with the benefits of a Panamanian Private Fundacion makes the present system obsolete. People in the stock markets, the average investors, are getting their pocket picked every day by the system. The Market Makers and brokers have taken over and manipulate naked short sell, which is selling shares they don't even own, costing the average investor millions each year. PANAMERSA Corporation is a good example," said Terrell. "We announced 3rd Quarter earnings that were up over 2500% over the second quarter and our PPS went down. We followed with 4th Quarter earnings up over 500% yet our PPS was manipulated down. The company is doing great but our shareholders are taking a beating so I have offered all our shareholders a one year minimum price Guarantee of $0.02 per share and a 2 year Guarantee of $ 0.04 per share if they will pull their certs and become a beneficiary of the Fundacion. This will be the new way of doing business on a global scale and is the wave of the future." For more info on see www.blog.panamersa.com.

Captby-I booked Jan.23th this year-but understand now you have to wait for months. I am taping every word..lol
That sounds like a real vacation, I am going to work all through the 2 months. Maybe I'll get some free time, I'll try to do those things you suggest. Terry and Linda Jamison, known as THE PSYCHIC TWINS, are the only twin psychics in the world. And yes, they are identical !
The Psychic Twins did predict the simultaneous terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center Towers and on Washington, D.C. by Bin Laden. The Psychic Twins made this prediction to 20 million listeners on the Art Bell Radio Show in November 1999, in an interview with Art Bell (the tape of this interview is available from the archives at www.artbell.com). While they primarily focus on psychic counseling for individuals and businesses, a sideline that they have become known for is world predictions (medical breakthroughs, national and natural disasters, the U.S. economy, stock market, etc.) Because they keep files on all predictions they write, they were able to locate at least five different documents of their channeled writing which specifically foretold these events for the year 2001. Currently, the twins have two network television shows in development. Please refer to their "What's New" section for air dates. They are currently available for readings by phone. (see "Contact us" for information.)
You can now read Woman's Own Magazine: April 23rd release, where Terry and Linda are profiled in this two-page article by Lisa Johnson, don't miss it!
"Our hearts go out to all the victims and their surviving family members. Let's all unite in prayer for world peace at this very emotional and difficult time."
- Terry and Linda Jamison, THE PSYCHIC TWINS
THE JAMISON TWINS are also accomplished actresses, singers, comedians, producers, designers, models, authors, teachers, healers, mediums, lecturers, painters, and book illustrators... and have done all of these things professionally.
THE PSYCHIC TWINS appear regularly on NATIONAL ENQUIRER TV, TURNER SUPERSTATION, NBC, ABC, AMC, and OPRAH WINFREY'S OXYGEN NETWORK which interviewed them as two of the world's best psychics. They have also appeared in seven documentary films.
Profiled in THE 100 TOP PSYCHICS IN AMERICA (Simon and Schuster), Turner Superstation's acclaimed documentary TWIN STORIES and THE BOOK OF TWINS (Doubleday), THE JAMISON TWINS make frequent TV and radio appearances. They have been interviewed on OXYGEN, PAJAMA PARTY, NBC's THE OTHER SIDE, LEEZA, AMC's HOLLYWOOD GHOST STORIES, ABC's MIKE AND MATY, KABC 7 NEWS and FOX'S GOOD DAY L.A., as well as UPN's STRANGE UNIVERSE. HARD COPY featured them reading host Kyle Kraska.
Most recently, THE ART BELL SHOW (Premier Radio) broadcast their Millennium prophecies worldwide to 20 million listeners (November 1999). Six hours later, their prophecy of a shooting in Seattle, Washington actually occurred as they had predicted live on the air. THE PSYCHIC TWINS correctly predicted the April 2000 stock market plunge during that same interview. April 2000, the Dow and Nasdaq suffered their worst point drop in history! And they were the only psychics to accurately predict the George W. Bush win on national TV and radio one year prior to the presidential election.Several other prophecies from that show have also already come true. Aside from prophecy work and private readings, THE PSYCHIC TWINS have assisted police and detectives in solving murder cases, even accurately predicting the name of the murderer.
THE PSYCHIC TWINS employ the unique method of "automatic writing," or channeled writing, which is a form of telepathy through which they communicate to a broader knowing. This amazing and rare gift resulted from an arduous struggle with a long-misdiagnosed illness. The twins have been practicing and studying metaphysics for over fifteen years.
Before embarking on their present psychic career, THE JAMISON TWINS were nationally renowned comic performance artists. They appeared at THE WHITE HOUSE for the Reagans, with BOB HOPE at LINCOLN CENTER, and at EARL'S COURT in London. They later starred in a film for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE as the two-headed housewife "Louise." THE JAMISON TWINS have entertained audiences all across the country with their twenty original comic characters, incorporating comic improvisation, singing, and robotic mime. They also design and construct their own costumes.
In 1984, the Jamisons embraced the practice of True Buddhism, and as volunteer leaders they have helped to pioneer the largest movement for world peace in history. Today, they reside in Southern California, striving to live a creative and meaningful life while inspiring thousands across the country. They are available for TV and radio interviews, private events and gatherings, lectures, and of course private readings.

SEC Suspends Trading Of 35 Companies Touted In Spam Email Campaigns
Investor Protection Agency Unveils "Operation Spamalot"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2007-34
Washington, D.C., March 8, 2007 - The Securities and Exchange Commission this morning suspended trading in the securities of 35 companies that have been the subject of recent and repeated spam email campaigns. The trading suspensions - the most ever aimed at spammed companies - were ordered because of questions regarding the adequacy and accuracy of information about the companies.
The trading suspensions are part of a stepped-up SEC effort - code named "Operation Spamalot" - to protect investors from potentially fraudulent spam email hyping small company stocks with phrases like, "Ready to Explode," "Ride the Bull," and "Fast Money." It's estimated that 100 million of these spam messages are sent every week, triggering dramatic spikes in share price and trading volume before the spamming stops and investors lose their money.
"When spam clogs our mailboxes, it's annoying. When it rips off investors, it's illegal and destructive," said SEC Chairman Christopher Cox. "Today's trading suspensions, and actions that will follow, should send a clear message to spammers: the SEC will hold you accountable."
Linda Chatman Thomsen, Director of the SEC's Enforcement Division, said, "Many of these companies are no doubt familiar to anyone who reads their email, because each has been the subject of a spam email campaign. While the Commission cautions investors not to make investment decisions based on anonymous emails they receive, we are also committed to tracking down those who prey on investors with false or misleading information."
Mark K. Schonfeld, Director of the Commission's Northeast Regional Office, said, "By halting trading in these stocks we are seeking to protect investors from further harm. But this is only the first step. Our investigation of the perpetrators - the people behind this misconduct - is continuing."
The securities of each of the 35 companies have been quoted on the Pink Sheets quotations service. Recent trading clearly demonstrates how spam campaigns can affect stock prices and trading volume. For example:
On Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, shares in Apparel Manufacturing Associates, Inc. (APPM) closed at $.06, with a trading volume of 3,500 shares. After a weekend spam campaign distributed emails proclaiming, "Huge news expected out on APPM, get in before the wire, We're taking it all the way to $1.00," trading volume on Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, hit 484,568 shares with the price spiking to over 19 cents a share. Two days later the price climbed to $.45. By Dec. 27, 2006, the price was back down to $.10 on trading volume of 65,350 shares.
On Dec. 19, 2006, trading in Goldmark Industries, Inc. (GDKI), closed at $.17 on trading volume of 126,286 shares. On Dec. 20, 2006, the spam campaign started, with e-mail proclaiming "GDKI IS MAKING EVERYONE BANK!," and setting a 5-day price target of $2. By Dec. 28, 2006, spam emails boasted of the price spike that had already been achieved -- "$.28 (Up 152% in 2 days!!!)" -- and promised a 5-day price target of $1. That same day, GDKI closed at $.35 on a volume of more than 5 million shares. By January 9, 2007, the closing share price was back down to $.15.
A spam campaign in Healtheuniverse, Inc. (HLUN) stock began on Sept. 4, 2006, with emails incorporating a Healtheuniverse press release proclaiming that HLUN was "focused on being the first to commercialize stem cell applications in the $15 billion worldwide plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery market." On Sept. 7, 2006, HLUN closed at $.12 per share on trading volume of 3,000 shares. The spam campaign accelerated, and HLUN shares spiked to $.22 per share on Sept. 11, 2006, with over 2.2 million shares trading hands. By Sept. 22, 2006, the closing price had dropped back down to $.11.
The trading suspensions will last for ten business days. The trading suspensions commenced today at 9:30 a.m., EDT, and terminate at 11:59 p.m., EDT, on March 21, 2007.

Lately, the UFC has been preying on their ‘Hall of Fame’ like a team of rabid telemarketers relentlessly calling a retirement home to sell over-priced appliances to confused and lonely senior citizens. Why? Because bringing a legend out of retirement sells a lot of tickets. However, it isn’t much different than giving your senile grandfather five bucks to pull his pants down and sing the national anthem on the corner, and then charging the neighborhood kids ten bucks each to watch it happen. I honestly felt bad for Royce Gracie after Matt Hughes gave him the prison shower rubdown and I still think the UFC rolled the dice with Ken Shamrocks’ life by letting him fight Tito Ortiz again and again like a confused zoo-keeper who keeps going into the gorilla cage despite suffering repeatedly dire consequences. Now the UFC has set the stage for what could be, potentially, the worst thing to happen in the octagon since Joe Son punched Keith Hackney in the nuts – by matching Randy Couture against Tim Sylvia. Can the older, smaller, vastly more popular former champion defeat the larger, younger current champion, who just might be the most unpopular person in human history to wear a championship belt? Fans everywhere will be watching to find out; which is exactly what Zuffa wants.
ImageTim “The Maine-i-ac” Sylvia vs. Randy “The Natural” Couture
With the possible exception of Alabama, the entire world is hoping Couture will pull this one off. However, trying to take Sylvia down is like trying to tackle a gorilla that is standing on the shoulders of the two other gorillas, to make a gorilla pyramid, which is similar to a human pyramid, except it’s made out of gorillas. Also, the top gorilla has a garden rake in each hand, and it’s swinging them around like a bastard. Also the whole damn stack of gorillas is backing up, so you basically have to run at it like Sonic the Hedgehog if you want to get near it, and that is when your troubles begin. Couture has not done well against larger, younger opponents but, realistically, who has?
ImageIn the battle between younger and older, younger usually wins and, sadly, ‘bigger’ has a size advantage over ‘smaller’. What does that leave? Smarter? I’ll admit that Randy Couture would probably trounce Tim Sylvia in a game of Trivial Pursuit, but I’ll remind you that “The Maine-i-ac” will likely have Pat Miletich or Jeremy Horn in his corner; which is akin to having a genius-level midget strapped on your back ala “Master Blaster” from “Mad Max – Beyond Thunderdome”. Will Couture be able to overcome these obstacles? The civilized world certainly hopes so. Unfortunately, I suspect that “The Natural” will catch a toaster-sized fist in the jaw while trying to box his way into an upper-body clinch and, sadly, Sylvia will win by TKO. Afterwards, unburdened by humility, Sylvia will say that Couture was a great champion but that he is even greater. This will not help his popularity. On the bright side, Couture will still have three fights left on his contract and will very likely face Cro Cop at some point. However, unfortunately, Cro Cop will probably knock him out as well.
Chris “Lights Out” Lytle vs. Matt Hughes
Image
Superman doesn’t go to the gym. Instead, he just sits around and uses his x-ray vision to scope out Lois Lanes’ fallopian tubes. Why? Because when you have super-powers, there’s no need to spend a lot of time in sweaty weight-rooms. Similarly, word on the street is that Hughes never used to train much for his fights. He didn’t have to because he was able to walk through most of his opponents like the son of Jor-El wading through a hailstorm of bullets. But then he ran into a bald genius with a master plan; Georges St. Pierre who, in the role of Lex Luthor, gave him the full on Kryptonite treatment and kicked his ass into the Phantom Zone. Now Chris Lytle, as Batman, takes his shot at the man of steel. Does he have the right tools on his utility belt? Maybe, but as everyone knows, Batman does not have superpowers. Also, bat-a-rangs are specifically forbidden inside the octagon. Therefore, Hughes will win by decision.
Image
Drew McFedries vs. Martin “Hitman” Kampmann
UFC fans remember McFedries as the guy who out-boxed Alessio Sakara in a fight reminiscent of something you’d see behind a convenience store at midnight. Kampann is from Denmark, so I’m pretty sure that makes him a Danish; which is appropriate since I think that McFedries will eat him for breakfast and win by TKO.
Image
Rich “Ace” Franklin vs. Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald
Anyone with an aspiring modeling career should stay the hell away from Rich Franklin. Evan Tanner looked like something out of “Night of the Living Dead” after his last waltz with “Ace” and David Loiseau left the octagon looking like he was suffering from a severe case of cranial elephantitis. Will “The Athlete” treat Franklin to a happy-meal of intense suffering at MacDonalds? Or will the former champ turn the Canadian into yet another Franklin-steins’ monster. My guess: Franklin by TKO
Jason Lambert vs. Renato “Babalu” Sobral
Every time Babalu comes into the octagon his hair looks like something just exploded right beside his head. Will this have any effect on the fight? Absolutely not, but I have to write about something since this the outcome of this one seems pretty clear to me. Sobral has better striking, better takedowns and better submissions than Lambert. He also has much cooler and far more numerous tattoos. Sobral by decision.
Rex Holman vs. Matt “The Hammer” Hamill
When I was a kid, I had a dog named Rex. Also, the bully at my school was deaf. Every day he’d push you around while shouting half-words you couldn’t understand. It was terrifying. Worse, whenever you complained about it, the teachers would get mad and tell you to always be nice to “the handicapped”. So, every afternoon, he would chase me around like some scene from Planet of the Apes. One day, I came home and my Mom told me that my dog Rex had run away. Years later I found out that this was a lie and that Rex had been put to sleep because there was something wrong with his leg and the surgery to fix it was more expensive than the needle. Hamill by decision.
Jon Fitch vs. Luigi Fioravanti
Luigi will jump onto Fitch’s head and crush him flat. Then he will kick him out of the octagon, sending him sliding off screen at ridiculous speed. Afterwards, he will run around the cage collecting enormous spinning coins while lousy electronic keyboard music plays and his brother Mario celebrates in his corner. No wait, that’s the wrong Luigi. Sorry. Fitch by decision.
Gleison Tibau vs. Jason Dent
Tibau has a loss to “Anaconda Anaconda” and a win over “Anderson Bad Boy”. Dent has beaten a guy named “Kolo Koka”. “Bad Boy Anaconda Kola” would be a terrible name for a soda pop. Dent by TKO
Jason “The Gizzard” Gilliam vs. Jamie “The Worm” Varner
This is like the battle to decide who has the worst nickname on Earth. In one corner: The Worm: a spineless creature and/or contemptible person. In the other: The Gizzard: a thick-walled, muscular pouch in the lower stomach of many birds and reptiles that grinds food, often with the aid of ingested stones. What’s next? “The Braying Ass”? “The Chain-Smoking Clown”? “The Creepy Grandmother”? Actually, I think those names are better. Varner by decision.

UFC 68: Sylvia Heavily Favored in Couture’s Return
The mixed martial arts world will be focused on the return of Randy Couture this Saturday. But his opponent thinks people may be focusing on the wrong guy.
Reigning heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia says he welcomes Couture’s return to the ring.
Come and get me, says the six-foot-eight, 255-pound man-mountain.
And while Couture may be a sentimental favorite, he’s not the betting favorite, according to betED. The online wagering site has Sylvia favored at -350, while Couture is +200.
The 43-year-old Couture, a Hall of Famer coming out of retirement after a year out of the mixed martial arts game, has owned both the heavyweight and light-heavyweight titles in the past and is considered an icon in the sport.
So does Sylvia want to test himself against the best?
"Well, one of the best," Sylvia corrects the questioner. "I wouldn't say the best. I consider myself THE best."
Sylvia and Couture face off March 3 at UFC 68: The Uprising in Columbus, Ohio. It's widely expected that Mirko Filipovic will take on the winner, once he disposes of Gabriel Gonzaga.
Couture could have his hands full against Sylvia, who is 13 years younger – and much bigger.
"If I have to look at it objectively, I don't see how Randy Couture is going to win," says UFC commentator Joe Rogan. "I see a young, hungry, gigantic man who has vicious knockout power and he's fighting a guy who's in his 40s, who has always had a problem with big men. And this is the biggest man he's ever fought. And the most dangerous.
"Tim Sylvia is a very under-rated man. He just doesn't look that dangerous, because he's got a body that looks like the average person's body. He doesn't have this muscular shredded six-pack body. . . . He doesn't look like this dynamic powerhouse alpha male champion. But he is. I think people get confused.
"That guy's a very dangerous fighter. He wants to win and he's willing to put in the work to win. He's constantly improving. He's a scary guy."
And this coming from an unabashed Couture admirer.
Looks like this year UFC is going to be smoking and Boxing/Wrestling is going to face some big competition.

Ultimate fighting battles for pay-per-view crown
Associated Press

NEW YORK - In the tough business of putting on pay-per-view events, Ultimate Fighting Championship is no longer getting counted out.
The upstart company that specializes in mixed martial arts matched the once-dominant World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. in pay-per-view revenues during 2006 and surpassed boxing-titan HBO. The three companies make up the bulk of the pay-per-view business.
"It was a killer year," UFC president Dana White said.
advertisement
UFC, a privately held company owned by Zuffa LLC, does not release financial results and White would not discuss them. But an industry executive familiar with the results said the company's 10 pay-per-view events generated more than $200 million in customer retail revenue.
WWE said it had 16 events that generated approximately $200 million in revenue and HBO had 11 events, reporting revenue of $177 million.
Typically, the companies take home about half of those customer retail revenues with cable companies getting the rest. The cost of the fights vary. People paid $39.95 to see UFC fighters pummel each other while WWE's brawls ranged between $34.95 to $49.95. HBO's most expensive events cost $49.95.
The performance marks a significant turnaround for the Las Vegas-based company - once maligned as nothing more than a money-losing venture that promoted brawlers in a cage. UFC fought back using a television show on Spike TV, getting more states to sanction the fights and drawing huge crowds to the live events.
The strategy has appeared to work in a big way, helping spur more PPV buys - sales of one event per household - thanks to the popularity of UFC fighters such as Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell. UFC has a major PPV fight Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, where heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia and Randy Couture will slug it out.
"UFC has reinvigorated the pay-per-view category," said Deana Myers, a senior analyst at Kagan Research LLC that tracks the industry.
To spark interest in pay-per-view events, WWE and UFC also air bouts on various networks. WWE's shows - "SmackDown," "RAW" and "Extreme Championship Wrestling" - have been the top rated shows on their respective networks. HBO helps promote its fighters on "Boxing After Dark."
One big difference between WWE and UFC is their audience. Thirty-nine percent of WWE's buys came from international viewers. UFC doesn't have a slice of the international arena but intends to grab market share from WWE when it holds its first pay-per-view fight in Manchester, England on April 21. White noted UFC has initiatives in Canada, Mexico and England, where it recently opened an office in London.
Dave Meltzer, editor of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, says competition between the WWE and UFC has heated up. He said WWE overexposed itself with too many events, hurting its bottom line. WWE's year-over-year buys were down 400,000 from 2005, according to the company. On the other hand, UFC's 5 million buys were a fivefold increase from 2005.
Media analyst Michael A. Kelman of Susquehanna Financial Group says the pay-per-view business will not be a major growth driver for WWE. But other WWE businesses such as video sales and its film division should bolster the company's future financial prospects.
Geof Rochester, WWE's senior vice president of marketing, said pay-per-view buys comprised 25 percent of its diversified business.
Like Myers, Meltzer believes some of WWE's audience is gravitating to the UFC.
"It's a pay-per-view rivalry," Meltzer said. "I'm not saying it's huge but it exists. Right now, UFC is definitely hot."
Meltzer added that WWE needs to find a new superstar like "The Rock," a crowd favorite who drew hordes of viewers.
"What UFC is doing that WWE and boxing haven't done as well is create new stars," he said.
HBO, for instance, has continued to rely on Oscar De la Hoya while a true heavyweight champion emerges, one with star power like Mike Tyson - who drew nearly 2 million buys twice in his heyday.
"The heavyweight champ of the world has always been the mythical strongest man in the planet. It's important for the sport," said Mark Taffet, HBO's senior vice president of sports operation and pay-per-view. HBO hopes a new champion will surface from heavyweight unification matches that could take place this year.
Rochester, of the WWE, said the company is incubating new stars.
"We have the next Rock in John Cena," he said, referring to one of WWE's most popular wrestlers.
UFC managed to grow despite the lack of a heavyweight star, but the company recently inked a deal with the burly Croatian Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. He's fighting in Manchester in April.
Most fans don't know Cro Cop but he has glimmers of being the UFC's Mike Tyson.
"He's the most spectacular knockout artist of any weight," said Meltzer, the editor of the newsletter. "American fans love knockout artists."
Taffet said he isn't worried about UFC's rise. The two companies are negotiating over HBO possibly airing a UFC fight. However, there are questions about which company will produce the fight and who will call it - along with some hard feelings. One of HBO's most well-known ringside announcers is Jim Lampley, who has bashed the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC.
Taffet said HBO is counting on strong business in 2007 when De La Hoya fights Floyd Mayweather on May 5 in Las Vegas. HBO hopes the match will take its place among the biggest pay-per-view-boxing events of all time - or at least break De La Hoya's 1999 record of 1.4 million buys fighting Felix Trinidad.
As for WWE, Rochester said it's not ready to concede the PPV title yet. While UFC had one good year, he said, WWE has generated more than $2 billion in total PPV buys over a 22-year stretch.
In this smackdown, WWE has plenty of fight left in it.
"We are not worried about UFC," he said.
WWE VP COMMENTS ON UFC AS PPV COMPETITION, ANOTHER BRAND SWITCH, BOOKER'S PROMOTION, PAUL LONDON & MORE
by Mike Johnson @ 1:30:00 PM on 2/28/2007
The Associated Press ran an article today on the three-way PPV battle between Ultimate Fighting Championships, boxing and professional wrestling, looking at UFC's growth in the last year. The basic jist of the story is that UFC is a hotter property right now and unlike WWE, has created a number of new stars. Boxing doesn't come up much. Geof Rochester, WWE's senior vice president of marketing, was quoted as saying the company isn't worried about UFC and has "the next Rock in John Cena." Based on recent UFC events I've attended at local bars in NYC, I can tell you WWE should take note, because those same bars aren't even carrying WWE PPVs at this point, while they are turning away patrons when they carry UFC PPV. WWE may not put over UFC publicly, but saying there's no worry is silly, considering they tried to sign away announcer Mike Goldberg and have started to introduce their own MMA character in Vladimir Kozlov. The AP article has been picked up already in a number of international markets.

UFC 68: THE UPRISING - Fight Breakdown
By Robby Maddux
Saturday evening, UFC 68 invades Columbus, Ohio in its first ever appearance in the Buckeye State for THE UPRISING. Warriors of the octagon do battle all night long, giving fight fans and bettors alike an evening of unprecedented action.
Headlining the magnificent card is two-time UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, Randy ''The Natural'' Couture (14-8-0), taking on UFC heavyweight champion Tim ''The Maine-iac'' Sylvia (25-2-0) in the main event.
Couture, who at 43 is coming out of a year long retirement to try to make history as the first three-time heavyweight champion in UFC history. Couture enters this fight having losses in two out of his last three fights, both to UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell.
Sylvia is a much bigger fighter, with a 7-inch height advantage. He's known for his heavy hands, brutal leg kicks and bone jarring knees. If Couture gets caught off guard, it'll be lights out!
Oddsmakers are predicting Sylvia will retain the title by making him the favorite at -280. But, if you like pulling for the underdog, Couture is your man at +220. Despite the odds being against him, Couture, one of the most revered mixed martial artists of all-time and a UFC Hall of Famer, has never performed up to mere mortals’ low standards.
Also fighting on Saturday are former UFC champions Rich ''Ace'' Franklin (22-2-0) and Matt Hughes (42-5-0), looking to get back in the win column against Jason MacDonald and Chris "Lights Out" Lytle, respectively.
The former UFC middleweight champion Franklin will be attempting to rebound against MacDonald from a devastating first-round stoppage loss at the hands of Anderson Silva in his last fight.
Hughes, the former UFC welterweight boss, lost his title via a second round TKO to Georges St. Pierre last November. A win over Lytle on Saturday will propel him to a third bout with St. Pierre, assuming the Canadian defeats Matt Serra at April 7th’s UFC 69 in Houston.
Franklin and Hughes both have oddsmakers respect at -500. But MacDonald and Lytle will have something to say about that, as they look for big paydays for their supporters who bet the dogs.
This sport is sweeping the betting nation off its feet with great action and even better odds on building bankrolls. There are several other fights on Saturday's THE UPRISING card and we have odds on them all. So check them out. Are you ready? Let's get it on!
