SoxFan,
You are the exception.
I seem to remember how Red Sox fans gloated last year when the Yankees lost a series against Tampa Bay and subsequently were swept by the Royals.
Thats coming off losing 2 out of 3 from the Devil Rays.
Susie,
Watching that fly ball fall in front of Bernie made me realize why the Yankees signed Damon.
Although Damon's 11th inning throw to the plate in last night's loss did take about 5 or 6 bounces before reaching Posada.
SoxFan,
Think about it. If every opposing manager walked Ortiz in a walk-off win situation he wouldn't accumulate the game winning hits to be considered for the MVP award.
Without the walk-off heroics there would be no other reason to award Ortiz the MVP.
Do not pitch to Ortiz in 9th inning when the game is on the line. Walk him and Pitch to Ramirez.
Ortiz certainly would not be considered MVP caliber for his defensive abilities.
SSKILLZ1,
You may not believe this but 26 and victor have occasionally agreed on some baseball related topics, particular those related to Bonds.
Where to former Yankee players go?
The Mets
LEDEE ON BOARD: The Mets claimed outfielder Ricky Ledee off waivers from the Dodgers. They made room by dumping Eli Marrero when Cliff Floyd talked his way off the DL. Ledee, 32, arrived too late for last night's game.
The Mets had been searching for a lefty bat with power off the bench. Willie Randolph also indicated that he plans to liberally rest his starting outfielders as the postseason approaches. Ledee had a .245 average with one homer and eight RBI in 43 games with L.A.
Omar Minaya said Ledee also was appealing because Floyd has been battling a left Achilles tendon problem that forced him to miss his third straight start last night, though Floyd had a pinch-hit groundout in the eighth. "With Cliff's injury, I wanted to protect ourselves with another outfielder," the GM said. "We're going to be cautious with Cliff - let's put it that way."
The Mets designated minor-league reliever Anderson Garcia for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster.
RUBEN ON HOLD: Ruben Sierra is prepared to join the Mets if his ailing mother's condition improves soon. Sierra hit .179 with four RBI in 28 at-bats for the Twins before his July 10 release. The goal would be for the 40-year-old, switch-hitting outfielder to work into playing shape in the minors, join the Mets in September and be available for the postseason roster - assuming he can prove himself during the minor-league stint. "Ruben is her only available child and he is taking care of her. If her condition does not improve soon, it is possible that Ruben will not join the Mets," said agent Chuck Berry, who plans to be at Shea today to visit client Julio Franco.
26,
To be consistent, Giambi spends too much time at DH to be given MVP consideration.
SSKILLZ1
lets think about this rationally
Isn't Jeter as valuable to the Yankees as Beltran is to the Mets.
Susie,
If the Yankees had done the same with Bernie, Jeter, Posada and Rivera early in their careers, Yankees would have saved a lot of money. Instead Yankees rolled the dice, waited until their free agent years and paid for it.
Who knows Pettitte might still be a Yankee if he was signed to a long term contract early in his Yankee career.
Will fiction become reality?

The debate over the merits of awarding the MVP to a DH has been quite civil...
Is someone's absence that evident?
matvfreelife.
No one who has played as many games at DH as Ortiz.

In Major League Baseball history, has a designated hitter ever won a league MVP award?
The Answer:
No player in Major League Baseball history has won the Most Valuable Player Award during a season in which their primary position was designated hitter.
The designated hitter is a player used in the batting lineup in place of the pitcher. The designated hitter rule has never been adopted by the National League.
Since 1973, which was the first year DHs were used by the American League, three players have won the MVP award in years they played a significant amount of games as a designated hitter.
The first was Boston's Jim Rice who in 1978 played 49 of his 163 games (remember the one-game playoff against New York) as a DH. The next season California Angels league MVP Don Baylor played 65 of 162 games at DH, and finally in 1996 Texas' Juan Gonzalez played 32 of 134 games at DH.
For more information about the designated hitter rule in baseball read our Infoplease Feature: Rules
matvfreelife,
I don't believe Yankess would have traded for Abreu if Sheffield and Matsui were healthy.
SSKILLZ1,
Mets owe their 1986 Championship to a groundball that went through the legs of a first baseman.
Spoken like a true MVP...
When asked about his error that led to four unearned runs and a loss to the D'Rays.
"I'm not out there all the time," Ortiz said. "It's hard to make an adjustment. I tried to do my best. I can't do too much. It can't be all fantasy."
Susie,
This is why Ortiz DH's. A few more like these throughout the season and the Yankees would be leading by more than one game.
David Ortiz, getting a rare start at first base, made an error that led to four unearned runs in the fourth inning as the Devil Rays took the lead for good.
SSKILLZ1,
Tell that to Mo Vaughn or Mike Piazza.
lets not make 1b, into an incredibly difficult postion to play
Did you ever see Keith Hernandez or Tino Martinez play?
Ortiz not playing first everyday is one reason why the Red Sox are only one game behind the Yankees. A few more games like the following and the Yankees would have a bigger lead.
Last night Ortiz, playing first base, was charged with an error for mishandling Carl Crawford's grounder that put runners on first and second. Jorge Cantu, then drove in Hollins with a single to tie it at 1. Norton, Upton and Paul made it 4-1 with two-out RBI singles.
SSKILLZ1,
How can you say that the Met's are not an interesting discussion. For a change their games are interesting to watch.
I agree that Beltran is a strong candidate for NL MVP and I raised that point a few weeks ago.
Wouldn't be nice to see both New York teams have the MVP for their respective leagues.
This is what MVPs do.
"Jeter leads the Yankees in average, hits (143), total bases (199), doubles (26), stolen bases (24) and is producing when the Yankees need him most; batting .369 since the All-Star break, hitting .500 with the bases loaded and .444 with runners on second and third. For all of David Ortiz's walkoff glory and home-run power, the Yankee shortstop is doing it on offense and defense."
Red Sox Nation says it should be MVPapi, but for all-around excellence, Jeter is your MVP right now.
http://www.nypost.com/php/pfriendly/print.php?url=http://www.nypost.com/sports/yankees/mvp__yankees_...
Good defense wins games just as much as clutch hitting.
One example for those who would base the MVP on one dimensional statistics.
Diving David is Wright on time
Billy Wagner said he couldn't remember what went through his mind. David Wright said there wasn't time for a thought to arrive in his. But both could feel Mike Lieberthal's smash down the third base line meant trouble for the Mets.
Fans at Shea didn't even have time to gasp as Wright lunged to his right for a backhand. In an instant it was over. Wright snared the ball in the webbing of his glove, hustled to his feet and gunned it across the diamond to complete the 4-3 win over the Phillies at Shea yesterday that gave the Mets a renewed 12-game lead over second-place Philadelphia.
Can anyone recall Ortiz making a great defensive play to preserve a Red Sox victory?
skono4,
Charlie Atlas looks quite thin when compared to Bonds.
There is also a chance that Pavano might be back before the end of the season.
50/50 is good over the course of a 162 game season, but could spell problems in a five game or seven game playoff series.
That was evident in Randy's 2005 loss against the Angels in game three of the ALDS.
Susie,
If Ortiz had to play every day in the field would he have the stamina to hit all those game winning hits, especially in last weeks heat wave.
The grind of playing full time has to take its toll on a player's overall statistics.
Susie,
Randy is a 50/50 proposition. Which is a lot better than Kevin Brown was last year.
Susie,
There is one way to settle this debate.
Red Sox should have Ortiz play 1st Base for the remainder of the season.
Do you really believe that the Yankees wouldn't pick up Rivera's option for 2007?
Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his 27th save. By finishing his 114th game over two seasons, Rivera guarantees his $10.5 million option for 2007.
Susie,
I don't believe in censorship not matter how nonsensical the posting is.
I would not want this or any other board to become like one, where dissenting postings can be deleted capriciously by the moderator.
Bull,
Why not get a Yankees' Visa or Mastercard amd see how widely it is accepted in New England.
26,
Never noticed the names.
With all the "agita" victor has created on RB and iHub I thought it was appropriate that he created his own baseball board. This way he can delete any post that that he doesn't agree with.
One way to get around being restricted...
Start your own board.

SoxFan,
I also take a pragmatic view of the Yankees' chances.
It all comes down to pitching. Mussina and Wang are solid, Lidle and Wright are questionable and you never know what type of performance Johnson will give.
SoxFan,
Are you and Victor following the same team?
SoxFan,
Red Sox should have the same confidence in David Wells that Yankees' fans had in Kevin Brown last year.
26, Let's start the debate now...
Jeter or Ortiz for MVP.
Derek Jeter is having his best season since 1999, when he hit .349 with 24 home runs and 102 RBI. It's time to start thinking of him as a legitimate MVP candidate, even with only eight home runs, because he seems to deliver an important hit or two most every night.
Jeter's hitting .355 after going 2-for-4 last night with a home run that put the Yankees ahead 1-0, and more significantly, he is batting .384 with runners in scoring position - third-best in the AL. In addition, Jeter's on-base percentage of .429 is third-best as well, and he has 23 stolen bases.
For good measure last night, Jeter added one of his patented over-the-head catches in shallow center - at full speed - that maybe no other shortstop makes.
Susie, Hamstring injuries are easier to prevent than to cure.

Amazing turn-around for Detroit Tigers.
On August 30, 2003, the Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox, putting them with the 1962 expansion New York Mets as the only modern MLB teams to lose 100 games before September. Tigers avoided tying the 1962 Mets' modern record for losses in one season (120) by winning five of their last six games of the season.
