Barge.....I just got my ASUS R2H mini notebook with the same entertainment software! It´s a really cool mini notebook with TPM1.2, GPS, WiFi, BT, Video, Foto,MS Tablet ASUS Protection Suite .....
The TPM is disabled, the ASUS Protection Suite works WITHOUT the TPM (Like Sony´s Protection Suite). Contrary to SONY, ASUS has no TPM software at all, NO drivers on the HDD or on a CD! I´ll look tomorrow what TPM is built in.

Weby........re: Bitlocker
Weby Bitlocker is just another software encryption program like Utimaco, Credant and other solutions in the world. Since Bitlocker is only available in Enterprise and Ultimate edition it seems to me that it would not have a great impact on the other encryption software vendors. The majority of Windows user will not have the chance to use it.
The really hugh impact will be driven by HARDWARE encryption solutions like SEAGATE/WAVE or HITACHI/WAVE(?) solutions, cause these solutions will be more secure WITHOUT any performance penalties!

HP - TPM models and the (lack of) management software
I´m following HP for a while now, cause I´m confused about their mix of TPMs and/or management software and because they CHANGED their website regarding TPMs.
As often stated they call the TPM NOW "Embedded security chip" and the former named Infineon Protection Suite NOW "HP embedded security software"!
I also wondered about several HP models, which come without any preinstalled TPM software like the DC5700, DC5750, XW4400, XW6400......
First I thought the workstations have an Infineon TPM1.2 but today I found a manual, where we can see that the XW series WILL have a built-in BRCM TPM1.2 within the BRCM 5752 NIC at the beginning of 2007.
http://h18002.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12522_div/12522_div.HTML
Below you´ll find a HP model list with TPMs and the software (IF there is any)
Consumer models (desktops and notebooks) have NO TPMs!
Business models
BROADCOM
Desktops
(with Broadcom TPM 1.2 WITHOUT management software and ONLY TPM drivers for download available)
DC7600, DC5700, DC5750
BROADCOM
Workstations (beginning of 2007)
(with Broadcom TPM 1.2 WITHOUT management software and NOTHING for download YET available)
XW4400, XW6400, XW8400, XW9400
INFINEON
Desktops
(with Infineon TPM 1.2 WITH management software (sometimes preinstalled or available for download))
DC7700
INFINEON
Notebooks
(with Infineon TPM 1.2 WITH management software (sometimes preinstalled or available for download))
NW8440, 9440
NX7400, 7300, 6325
NC4400, 2400
You can see above that HP has about 50:50 mix of TPMs, while all NEW workstations will have a BRCM TPM1.2.
Well IMO HP has to do their homework in enabling a trusted infrastructur having a mixed productline within their own machines and no server sided software.
Have a nice weekend all

Since I´m a customer of Ingram, I have all prices of the Vista versions, System builder and retail versions.
The difference between HomeBasic and Ultimate is at least 150 bucks, if I remember correctly.
I´ll dig it up tomorrow when I´m back in the office.
BR
ISPRO
Ramsey......you´re right on, this is ONE of the many problems you´ll have with Bitlocker.
A few others:
- Bitlocker can only encrypt the system partition. Since most OEMs generate a system and a DATA partition it´s useless cause you cant encrypt this one.
- Bitlocker has a performance penalty of about 12%
- The first encryption needs 1 minute per gigabyte!!! (Well if you want to go to lunch enjoy it!LOL)
BR
ISPRO
Ramsey....please consider that Bitlocker is only available in Vista Enterprise and Ultimate edition.
Take the price difference to most of the OEM Vista editions (IMO home and enterprise basic) and you´ll get nearby to the cost of FDE/ETDM...
BR
ISPRO
GoKite....agreed.
Drive Trust works as a stand alone solution enabling software developers to adress the FDE. Without ETDM DriveTrust couldn´t use the TPM, IMO.
If we look at the WhitePapers from the FDE.2 and the DB35, we can see that both mention Drive Trust but only the momentus paper mentions the compatibility with TPM (through ETDM I think).

Barge/Gokite....what we know, what we read, what we assume....
Trusted computing is playing with fear therefore there are 2 different marketing approaches for one and the same technology.
While the gov, healthcare and enterprises are afraid of losing data, being attacked and so on, the consumer is afraid of having to pay for everything he does, losing his freedom to play, watch and hear pirate copies and being observed.
While TCG is marketed towards enterprises and govs, the consumer side marketing doesn´t even exists.
That doesn´t mean, that there are no TPMs in consumer devices! (we´ve never heard again about the TPM "like" Infineon chip in the XBOX - does it mean it doesn´t exist?)
Don´t tell the consumer, what´s inside, so he needs not to worry about it. There´ll come the time, when every consumer is told to turn on his TPM for making his banking transaction, online shopping or ebay.
While HP integrates TPMs in their desktop machines and workstations, which are sold to enterprise AND consumers, Dell only integrates TPMs in their enterprise machines.
I expect the first Dimensions and Inspirons WITH TPMs in May07 at the latest!!!!
While I agree, that Wave will earn money from enterprise business first, I´m sure that part3 of Waves business model will bring in the major part of the revenues. And this part will be driven mostly from the consumer side IMO....

RE: VIA/TPM.......on the other side, VIA knows exactly where to go in the future!
"News » Trusted Platform Module gets backing from Via
Vom 31.03.2006 00:00Trusted Platform Module gets backing from Via
In a move to help users better secure the data on their computers, Taiwanese chip vendor Via Technologies Inc. said Thursday it will add Trusted Platform Module (TPM) support to its line of chipset products.
TPMs are microcontrollers used to safely store and authenticate passwords, digital certificates and encryption keys. Generally attached to the motherboard of a computer, these chips, which are based on a specification developed by The Trusted Computing Group, are designed to protect user information from malicious software or physical theft.
Via will add TPM support to its line of chipsets for processors from Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), as well as those that support its own processor offerings. The company has validated its latest chipsets with TPMs produced by STMicroelectronics NV and BIOS (Basic Input Output Software) offerings from Insyde Software Inc. and American Megatrends Inc., it said.
In addition to TPM support, Via offers other technologies that help to keep user data secure. For example, the company's C7 processor line includes a hardware encryption feature called Via PadLock."

Svenm.......it´s an alternative product.IMO
"The VIA PadLock Security Engine includes technology for the processing of militarygrade
asymmetric encryption algorithms. Using a Montgomery Multiplier, VIA PadLock
accelerates all forms of public key encryption including RSA algorithms.
This accelerator allows VIA PadLock enabled applications to perform up to 900 RSA
signings per second. The closest competitor for this feature is the Trusted Platform
Module (TPM), which allows only up to 16 RSA signings per second.
However, the Trusted Platform Module’s RSA function differs slightly from the VIA
PadLock Montgomery Multiplier in that the TPM computes all parts of the RSA
algorithm whereas the VIA PadLock accelerates in hardware the algorithm’s ability to
perform the computations.
Figure 9 illustrates a throughput comparison of RSA signing through the Chinese
Remainder Theorem of the STMicroelectronics Trusted Platform Module and the VIA
PadLock Security Engine."

Nick....right, we discussed Secude a while ago and never found a mention of the TPM, so we ASSUMED that their TiDoCoMi access
management software doesn´t work with TPMs.
IF Secude and Wave had the same SW packages, the cost structure would depend on the managability and usability of the single software systems. BUT even IF the TiDoCoMi access management software could be used with TPMs, Secude has no other product, which could be compared with our product line.
Said that, I´ll come back to the problem for the CUSTOMER, who has to manage, maintain and train 3 DIFFERENT software packages AT LEAST! Thats why HP will come on board soon, cause IFX missed to develop the server side software....IMO
BR
ISPRO
Wavxmaster.....I would say both are wrong.
Nobody knows for sure that Secude hasn´t a software that manages the keys for the FDE in conjunction with a TPM. Nobody knows exactly the cost structure of the FDEs bundled with Wave or Secude.
But thats all NOT the issue!!!!
What we know for sure is, that Wave is the ONLY TPM software supplier in the WORLD who offers a complete solution!
HDD-CLIENT-NETWORK-SERVER including mangement of biometric devices!
So ask, who will be so stupid to install several different software utilities to manage the different devices on the client? If he could handle this with IFX-HP and Secude, what option does he have, when he HAS TO attest to a trusted infrastructure, how could he do a centralised key management and has this person to touch all the tousands machines of this company, to install 3 SW packages instead of ONE???!!!
LOL
So now what will be the more expensive (half)solution?

Said that, I think that nobody at HP wants to risk this partnership for a very small business portion as the TPM business right now.
