Trump Gave Russians Secrets News Orgs Are Being Asked To Withhold
by Ken Dilanian, Courtney Kube and Dafna Linzer
STILL WHINING AND CRYING...
Some of the intelligence President Trump provided to Russian officials is so secret that American news organizations are still being asked not to report it, two U.S. officials told NBC News.
The requests by U.S. intelligence officials cast doubt on the assertion by the president's aides that the sharing was appropriate.
Trump told the Russian foreign minister and the Russian ambassador in the Oval Office that the Islamic State had used stolen airport security equipment to test a bomb that could be hidden in electronic devices and slipped undetected into an airplane cabin, the officials said. And he named the city in ISIS-held Syria in which the intelligence was gathered, the officials added.
President Donald Trump meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, left, next to Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergei Kislyak at the White House in Washington on May 10, 2017. Trump on Wednesday welcomed Vladimir Putin's top diplomat to the White House for Trump's highest level face-to-face contact with a Russian government official since he took office in January.

U.S. intelligence officials have asked NBC News and other media organizations not to report the type of equipment, where it was stolen, and the name of the city where the intelligence was gathered, because doing so could harm U.S. national security, they say. But Trump told the Russians those things, the U.S. officials said, as he described intelligence that led to the new rules banning electronic devices in the cabins of certain flights.
The information came from Israel, multiple government officials told NBC News — another fact some news organizations had been asked not to disclose, U.S. officials said.
White House counterterrorism adviser Tom Bossert, who was not in the May 10 meeting, learned about what Trump said when he read notes immediately afterward, a U.S. official with direct knowledge told NBC News. He immediately called officials at the CIA and the National Security Agency to report a security breach, the official said.
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told reporters Tuesday that what Trump shared was "wholly appropriate," and that Bossert acted "maybe from an overabundance of caution."
McMaster, a serving Army general who is not steeped in counterterrorism, did not immediately realize the impact of what Trump had said, the U.S. official recounted.
Many current and former intelligence officials said they were aghast at what they described as a reckless mistake by the president. But behind the scenes, U.S. intelligence officials were divided on the real world impact. Some said it could harm intelligence sharing, while others disagreed. Many pushed back on a news report that the life of an Israeli asset was in danger.
Four U.S. officials told NBC News they did not believe any lives were put at risk. Two said, however, that the Israeli operation, one of the West's best windows into ISIS, was in jeopardy in the wake of the president's disclosure.
McMaster told reporters that Trump had not been aware of the source of the information he conveyed to the Russians, a statement that raised questions about whether the president has been properly briefed on how he should treated classified intelligence.

NEW LONDON, Conn. — President Trump offered a robust defense of his presidency Wednesday, arguing that he has been treated unfairly by the Washington media amid a series of deepening scandals that have engulfed his administration.
In a commencement ceremony at the Coast Guard Academy, Trump said “no politician in history .?.?. has been treated worse or more unfairly. You can’t let them get you down, can’t let the critics and the naysayers get in the way of your dreams.”
Trump did not directly address news reports this week that he revealed highly classified information to Russian government officials and that he had asked then-FBI Director James B. Comey to end an investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia. But the president was clearly eager to address the controversies, using the second half of his commencement address to express his frustration in rhetoric just loosely cloaked as “advice” for the new cadets.
“Over the course of your life, you’ll find things are not always fair,” he said. “Things happen to you that you do not deserve and are not always warranted, but you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight. Never, ever give up. Things will work out just fine.”
In an aside, he added: “I guess that’s why we won.” Then he returned to his remarks to add: “Adversity makes you stronger. Don’t give in, don’t back down, and never stop doing what you know is right. Nothing worth doing ever, ever came easy.”

The president arrived at Joint Base Andrews with a clutch of aides, including Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and senior counselor Kellyanne Conway, for the short flight on Air Force One. He boarded quickly, eschewing the customary presidential wave as he ducked into the cabin.
As Trump flew north, in-flight television feeds in the press quarters were tuned to the House Republican leaders holding a news conference on Capitol Hill, which was dominated by questions about Trump’s conduct and the political fallout.
“People turn on the TV and they think this is all that’s happening, all we’re doing,” Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) said. “That’s just not the case.”
Reporters could not see clearly to the front of the plane, where the staff was seated, but an open door provided glimpses of a screen mounted on a wall. The TV, which had previously been showing ESPN, had been switched to Fox News.

Trump voters want jobs. Not noise about Russia
by Heather Long
May 16, 2017: 11:53 AM ET
The Rust Belt gave Trump his victory. Now these voters want jobs.
GO WATCH and LISTEN to the Men --it's NOT LONG
President Trump is in danger of doing what he accused so many "career politicians" of doing: Going to Washington and forgetting what real people care about.
For months, I've traveled the country talking with dozens of Trump voters. No one has ever brought up Russia, an issue that President Trump seems obsessed with. The topic never came up in Ohio, Kentucky or Michigan. Last week, I was in Wisconsin. There too, Russia never came up, nor did the FBI, both of which are dominating news from the White House.
These states went to Trump and were critical to his election. All voters there want to talk about is how America needs more jobs. They don't mean jobs at McDonald's or an Amazon warehouse. They mean jobs that will allow them to have decent, middle class lives, that pay over $25 an hour, and come with health care and retirement benefits.
Jobs and wages are "why we voted him in," says Kenneth Olsen, a 60-year-old factory worker from Racine, Wisconsin, who has been told his job is moving to Canada soon. He's deeply concerned that he and his wife might lose their house after he's laid off.
Kenneth Olsen from Racine, Wisconsin, who has been told his job is moving to Canada soon.
On the campaign trail, Trump seemed to be in sync with voters like Olsen and understand their deep economic pain and fear. He excelled at rallying massive crowds with promises to be the "greatest jobs producer that God ever created" and to bring back jobs from Mexico and China. He focused on what got his base excited.
But just over 100 days into his presidency, he constantly sets in motion events that threaten to derail his economic agenda that would fulfill his campaign promises. Those end up dominating key TV newscasts and then he focuses on turning the news cycle in his favor.
The latest attempts, especially on Russia, have backfired spectacularly because his comments contradict what his own spokespeople are saying about why he fired FBI chief James Comey in the midst of an investigation into his campaign's Russia connection.
Trump is getting sidetracked
Now sources claim Trump shared critical intelligence info with the Russians, a day after firing the FBI director. It isn't just raising many questions about Trump's handling of critical information, it's an example of Trump getting sidetracked from what his base cares about most.
The same thing happened with his claims of voter fraud. And the hugely controversial travel ban that caused even the business community to protest in his early days in office.
Olsen is a swing voter who says he has voted for candidates in both parties. He lives in the battleground state of Wisconsin, which Trump won by about 22,700 votes. I talked to Olsen a day after Comey was fired. It was barely on his radar. Olsen called it "just surprising." He wished the president would get back to his economic agenda.
"I really haven't seen him doing anything" on jobs, Olsen said. "The longer they stall around and dance around and whatever, the more people are gonna get hurt."
Researchers at Goldman Sachs, an investment bank with deep ties to the Trump White House, now predict that tax reform won't happen until 2018. And there are a lot of mixed signals coming from the White House on trade.
So far, the country has created 522,000 jobs, since Trump became president. It's early days, but it's a slower pace of hiring than what was happening under President Obama last year.
Bret Mattice voted for the first time ever for Donald Trump. He believed Trump understood how working class America was getting crushed.
'Why I voted for Trump'
Bret Mattice is 46 and works at the same engine factory in Wisconsin that Olsen does. He voted for the first time ever last year because he felt Trump really understood people like him and would fight to keep $30-an-hour jobs like his in the United States.
Trump "wasn't a career politician," Mattice told CNNMoney. "He was saying things that the average person who lost their job" wants to hear.
Mattice felt he "couldn't comment" about Comey. It wasn't an issue that got him riled up. Both Olsen and Mattice were waiting for Trump to reduce taxes and reform trade. They believe those policies could change their lives -- and is also a positive for the future of their kids and grandkids.
Early polls indicate that few Americans approve of Trump firing Comey. Only 29% of respondents to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday thought it was a good idea. But that seems like the wrong yardstick to gauge reaction.
Trump voters give him 'incomplete' grade
im and Peggy Stewart live outside Detroit, Michigan. They call themsleves 'almost' middle class.
People in the "heartland" aren't protesting this. Or dramatically changing their minds about Trump over it. Frankly, it's just not core dinner table fodder.
Most people I spoke with give Trump a "B" grade so far -- or an "incomplete." They're still hopeful, but they haven't seen a lot of action yet on the core issues that matter to them. They're willing to give Trump time, but they won't wait forever.
"I hope it's not the biggest mistake of my life," Peggy Stewart told me in February about her vote for Trump. She lives in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, a state Trump won by just 10,704 votes.
"Some of us are working too hard to fall back now," she said.
Stewart is 62. She really struggled to get a job, believing no one will hire an older worker. (It's a sentiment I've heard frequently from Americans over 50.) She finally found work as a security guard, but here's the rub: She's employed by the same company she worked at years ago, but it pays her less now.
She makes $9 an hour, barely above Michigan's minimum wage. When asked what she would tell Trump if she ever met him, the petite Midwesterner said, "Mr. Trump, please take care of us. We're looking to you."
Rev. William Owens is director of the Kentucky Mountain Mission of Eastern Kentucky, one of America's poorest regions.
Trump, a 'man of action'
Some of the most enthusiastic Trump voters I've met are in the Appalachia region of Kentucky. It's an area that contains some of the poorest counties in the entire United States. The mountains and hiking trails are stunning, but the coal and oil jobs -- and even some private prison jobs -- are mostly gone.
People were still sporting the iconic red Trump ballcaps when I visited Beattyville, Kentucky, known as "America's poorest white town," just after Trump was inaugurated.
"I think he's best for our economy, especially here," said William Owens, a pastor who has dedicated his life to helping the kids in Kentucky's forgotten hills where far too many are addicted to drugs and government aid. "We have the same problems here that the inner cities have."
Owens runs a youth center. He started a bowling league for teens, one of the few activities in town. He has helped to finally get internet service in the community and to push more kids toward college. Owens grew up as one of 14 kids. He's about as mild mannered as they come. He was concerned about how brash Trump can be, but he voted for him because he believed he was a "man of action."
As the FBI saga continues to unfold, there's a lot of "action," but not the type Trump voters want. Trump and his team are once again fixated on something far removed from his promise of "jobs, jobs, jobs."

MSNBC Ending Lawrence O’Donnell “The Last Word” Show Despite Top Ratings (Exclusive)
¦Television
by Roger Friedman - May 15, 2017 12:08 pm
I can confirm that MSNBC is ending the top rated “The Last Word” with Lawrence O’Donnell, the popular show that follows Rachel Maddow at 10pm. O’Donnell’s contract is up shortly, and the network has not made any overtures about keeping him on.
There is a fear that despite Maddow’s dogged liberalism, MSNBC is taking a turn to the right. O’Donnell would not fit into that model. But they’ve installed Fox News’s Greta van Susteren at 6pm, and more changes are coming. (This follows the disaster with Tamron Hall and the coming of Megyn Kelly from Fox News, too.)
It seems just like MSNBC to abruptly kill their own success. They’re finally beating CNN and Fox, so why not reverse course? Crazy. O’Donnell’s ratings have never been higher.
“The Last Word” has been on since 2011, and O’Donnell has been with MSNBC since it began. If CNN were smart, they’d pick him up right away. He’s one of the smartest guys in the room, and a pleasure to watch. Among his credits are writing for and consulting on “The West Wing.”
UPDATE
My NBC sources say that O’Donnell’s tireless criticism of Donald Trump is the cause of the trouble. O’Donnell calls Trump a liar on TV almost ever night. Says my observer: “Phil Griffin fought back Trump’s demands to Comcast chief Steve Burke that O’Donnell get fired for years. But now he’s president and now it’s Andy Lack’s decision and Andy has never run a single promo for O’Donnell and he wants access to Trump for Lester Holt interview and more.”
Morale at NBC News has been low for some time. My source says: “This version of NBC news would have handed the Pentagon papers back to the Pentagon. The New York Times and Washington Post remain our best hope.”
Maybe Bill O’Reilly will take his place. Maybe pigs will fly.

Free Advice to Trump Aides: Quit While You Can

On Monday night, Lt. Gen. H. R. On Monday night, Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, President Trump’s widely admired national security adviser, held a hastily convened news conference to try to knock down reports that Mr. Trump had shared highly classified information with Russia — only to have Mr. Trump appear to confirm the reports in two Tuesday morning tweets.
“General McMaster spent decades defending this nation, earning his integrity and honor. Trump squandered it in less than 12 hours,” responded the Republican strategist John Weaver in a tweet. The journalist and former speechwriter for George W. Bush, David Frum, asked: “How does McMaster not resign today? That thing he said ‘did not happen’ the president has just defended doing.”
General McMaster may find a way of avoiding that conclusion for now, but — if the yelling from the inmates of the West Wing is anything to go by — the moral and intellectual contortions now required of those who serve in the White House are extracting a heavy cost. It is tempting to believe, for instance, that the president’s press spokesman Sean Spicer will forever be remembered for the evening Mr. Trump fired the F.B.I. director, James Comey, when Mr. Spicer cowered among the bushes on the White House grounds to avoid journalists. But in all likelihood, Mr. Spicer will soon find himself at the center of yet another humiliating tableau, one that will supplant that last one in the public consciousness.
After all, before people started decorating their shrubbery with Sean Spicer lawn ornaments, he was best known for the petulant, hectoring and surreally dishonest press briefings that Melissa McCarthy immortalized on “Saturday Night Live.” No one knows the next national joke that will have Mr. Spicer as a punch line, but one thing is clear. As long as he works for this president, he is unlikely to recover his dignity.

Comey Memo Says Trump Asked Him to End Flynn Investigation
By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDTMAY 16, 2017

Credit Gabriella Demczuk for The New York Times
“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey, according to the memo. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey that Mr. Flynn had done nothing wrong, according to the memo.
Mr. Comey did not say anything to Mr. Trump about curtailing the investigation, only replying: “I agree he is a good guy.”
In a statement, the White House denied the version of events in the memo.
“While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn,” the statement said. “The president has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey.”
In testimony to the Senate last week, the acting F.B.I. director, Andrew G. McCabe, said, “There has been no effort to impede our investigation to date.”
A spokesman for the F.B.I. declined to comment.
Mr. Comey created similar memos — including some that are classified — about every phone call and meeting he had with the president, the two people said. It is unclear whether Mr. Comey told the Justice Department about the conversation or his memos.
Mr. Trump fired Mr. Comey last week. Trump administration officials have provided multiple, conflicting accounts of the reasoning behind Mr. Comey’s dismissal. Mr. Trump said in a television interview that one of the reasons was because he believed “this Russia thing” was a “made-up story.”
The Feb. 14 meeting took place just a day after Mr. Flynn was forced out of his job after it was revealed he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about the nature of phone conversations he had had with the Russian ambassador to the United States.
Despite the conversation between Mr. Trump and Mr. Comey, the investigation of Mr. Flynn has proceeded. In Virginia, a federal grand jury has issued subpoenas in recent weeks for records related to Mr. Flynn. Part of the Flynn investigation is centered on his financial ties to Russia and Turkey.
Mr. Comey had been in the Oval Office that day with other senior national security officials for a terrorism threat briefing. When the meeting ended, Mr. Trump told those present — including Mr. Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions — to leave the room except for Mr. Comey.
Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates.
Mr. Trump then turned the discussion to Mr. Flynn.
After writing up a memo that outlined the meeting, Mr. Comey shared it with senior F.B.I. officials. Mr. Comey and his aides perceived Mr. Trump’s comments as an effort to influence the investigation, but they decided that they would try to keep the conversation secret — even from the F.B.I. agents working on the Russia investigation — so the details of the conversation would not affect the investigation.
Mr. Comey was known among his closest advisers to document conversations that he believed would later be called into question, according to two former confidants, who said Mr. Comey was uncomfortable at times with his relationship with Mr. Trump.
Mr. Comey’s recollection has been bolstered in the past by F.B.I. notes. In 2007, he told Congress about a now-famous showdown with senior White House officials over the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping program. The White House disputed Mr. Comey’s account, but the F.B.I. director at the time, Robert S. Mueller III, kept notes that backed up Mr. Comey’s story.
The White House has repeatedly crossed lines that other administrations have been reluctant to cross when discussing politically charged criminal investigations. Mr. Trump has disparaged the ongoing F.B.I. investigation as a hoax and called for an investigation into his political rivals. His representatives have taken the unusual step of declaring no need for a special prosecutor to investigate the president’s associates.
The Oval Office meeting occurred a little more than two weeks after Mr. Trump summoned Mr. Comey to the White House for a lengthy, one-on-one dinner in the residence. At that dinner, on Jan. 27, Mr. Trump asked Mr. Comey at least two times for a pledge of loyalty — which Mr. Comey declined, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates.
In a Twitter posting on Friday, Mr. Trump said that “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”
After the meeting, Mr. Comey’s associates did not believe there was any way to corroborate Mr. Trump’s statements. But Mr. Trump’s suggestion last week that he was keeping tapes has made them wonder whether there are tapes that back up Mr. Comey’s account.
The Jan. 27 dinner came a day after White House officials learned that Mr. Flynn had been interviewed by F.B.I. agents about his phone calls with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak. On Jan. 26, Acting Attorney General Sally Q. Yates told the White House counsel about the interview, and said Mr. Flynn could be subject to blackmail by the Russians because they knew he had lied about the content of the calls.

The President Of The United States
Only like 25 more years of this.
This has, at times, chafed the president, according to two officials with knowledge of the situation. Mr. Trump, who still openly laments having to dismiss his first national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, has groused that General McMaster talks too much in meetings, and the president has referred to him as “a pain,” according to one of the officials.
In private, three administration officials conceded that they could not publicly articulate their most compelling — and honest — defense of the president: that Mr. Trump, a hasty and indifferent reader of printed briefing materials, simply did not possess the interest or knowledge of the granular details of intelligence gathering to leak specific sources and methods of intelligence gathering that would do harm to United States allies.

Our Dumb Country
The headlines are something like "Trump to give speech on Islam in Saudi Arabia." Obviously Trump doesn't know anything about anything, so any speech subject would be pretty funny, but he of course knows absolutely nothing about Islam and yet "we" think it's perfectly fine and normal to visit another country and talk to them about their state religion. I'm sure they will value his insights and also all the weapons he sells them.

Because I Am Not Serious
Trump is a senile old man with some sort of degenerative brain condition and he will brag to anybody about anything. This isn't about Russia, really, it's about a president of the United States who brags to people that important people visit him in the Oval Office. A president of the United States who brags that he won the election. A president of the United States who tells reporters about how impressed people are with him. A man - not just a man, but the president of the United States of fucking America - who can't have a conversation without telling someone how impressed other people are with him. He'll tell anybody anything to impress them with how impressive he is.
Trump has been on my teevee and radio my entire adult life. I was a Howard Stern listener for a long time. Trump was a regular. He was always a horrible narcissistic braggart, but not like this. He has a problem, we have a problem, and despite the fact that his handlers keep telling the press that they have to treat him like a 5 year old, no one will come right out and say the obvious: Trump is in serious mental decline and also he runs the world.

Trump Shared Classified Data With Russians, Officials Say
By MATTHEW ROSENBERG and ERIC SCHMITT 29 minutes ago
During an Oval Office meeting with top Russian officials, President Trump is said to have described highly classified material about a new ISIS plot.
The details had not even been shared with American allies, and the disclosure could jeopardize a crucial intelligence-sharing relationship.

what the tv is saying ... god knows he is dumb . .but damn!
and now, I've heard talk that our party will split .. so no nothing for awhile, for them or we dems either. I will weather the storm but I will drink poison before I vote for anyone such as him or anyone such as him backs... I'm thinking about ordering this new book .. it's for people who can't stand to be around 45 much .. . Mother Jones has a list, I picked this one, as it seems that this phenomena goes off every so often ... it went off then, in this last primary. Now, I have read other things on this .. but this is new and I thought perhaps it would have newer information .. it sure is an old story ... ; )
