You'll be happy to know I drool no longer. Hmmmmmmm, with your highly developed sense of shaudenfreude ..... maybe not.
And what is Low down to these days? What sub-penny boards and agendas of the faithful are you reading for your morbid titillation fix?
Me or.
I had a root canal today. My mouth hurts like a mother. Am about to take a pain killer. The thought of it reminded me of the time I had taken pain killers for something, was totally loopy and you let me make a damned fool of myself out here. Encouraged it, even. You are so evil.
Off I go to get a glass of water. I'm practically drooling with pain.
Or a good bagel, even.
That killed. I have looked at it and laughed half a dozen times.
He's done a stellar job. It's the perfect love nest. All that's missing is a photo of the potato, or is that potato2... whatever.
Ozymandias
I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read,
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed,
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
-Percy Bysshe Shelley
I'm ignorant. Splain yourself, oh ridiculously well educated one.
I just looked it up. Seems like something I ought to see and surely should have known about but did not.
Being one who experiences a marked rise in the depth and breadth of my capacity for compassion and brotherly love after a glass of wine, a decent human being who has been called the wolf of Wall Street twice already this week, as a nice person who is referred to as Osama by the secretaries, processors and traders at the brokerage firm I deal with, and as the daughter of a sickeningly, pathetically deluded Born Again Christian... I hesitate to sneer at kinkade's seeming hypocrisy, but I will manage.
Oh how perfect! May derf and tate live ever after in that mint entertainment center.
Had a few interesting wines last night. A 2004 PAX, Cuvee Christine Syrah - 80$. It was really fresh tasting for a serious wine. I loved it, especially since it tasted remarkably like my wine. My partner and I had a wonderful night between that and a 2004 303 spatlese - 43$. You know what? The 04 is even better, MUCH better than the 03, shockingly. We could not believe it. More concentrated and elegant. Didn't have the same prominence of apricot, though some was there. It was brighter and more complex, not as muddy (though I hate to use that word since I so loved it). It was just as thrilling. Going to order a few more now.
He's in his entertainment center with somebody.
Petite Syrah is one of my new favorite varietals. Will try it. Thanks.
I want a group pic of ihub members of my choosing in togas. I will take it, of course. We can post it on the home page. See if people can guess who is who. I want laurel wreathes and sandals laced to the calf.
TOGA PARTY! YES! Oh, to see you in a toga.
One does what one must do. In fact, I was going to suggest that we all throw some wet towels with rotten grapes, apricots and perhaps a few mushrooms into the hamper for a week. Then open, smell and mangia... to prepare us for our next tasting. This wine tasting stuff is not to be taken lightly, Chu! We are not a bunch of dilettantes!
Thanks!
Had a '97 and '99 y'quem this week. The '99 was weird. Smelled like moldy laundry and tasted like it had some bad fruit in it. It was still good but quite bitter - hardly worth the money. Well, that's not entirely true. I got it on sale. Still, nothing all that special.
The '97 was better than the '99 but was much more expensive, too. It was delicious with the aged Gouda I brought to my friends' house. Aged Gouda is now officially my favorite cheese. Back to the wine... I expected more only because the '01 was truly a perfect wine. It was my understanding that the '97 was an exceptional though imperfect year. At least now I deeply appreciate what a miracle the '01 is. I fully comprehend that I have had one of the wonders of the wine world. There was no comparison, none, while it was perfectly wonderful and had I never had the '01 I'd possibly think it better than it was. The '01 is a 100 point wine without hesitation. The '99 was maybe an 89 and the '97 was perhaps a 93.
Found a great buy. I think it's called Clos Mimi Petite Rousse, Petite Syrah. Left the bottle at friends' but the label was pink. This I remember. Great buy. Better than the two expensive bottles of Bordeaux my friend opened. He readily admitted my 15$ Petite Syrah was the best by far of the bunch. Needs to breathe a little and then opens up into a lovely wine.
Munich - 1.8/5: I went to the movies and couldn't decide between Munich and Eight Below. I stupidly chose Munich. What a horrible excuse for a movie. It was disjointed, predictable (I swear that I predicted every single thing that happened in that movie from beginning to end, and oh what a distance to the end), lacked focus, Avner's nightmare/flashbacks made no sense in context (though I think Bana is a better than terrific actor - hard to believe that is that same guy who was in Chopper AND Troy)...
Regardless, I can barely build up enough steam to write about Munich but I might have to some other time when I'm not so tired. I even think the title is a stretch. Will see Eight Below next time for sure.
The Minus Man was terrific, imo. That was when I first thought, "Who is this Cox person" AND "Who is this Wilson person". I've been sort of studying mushrooms for a long time. Used to go mushroom hunting with a biology friend, so that part of the story resonated with me, too. The deadliest ones have a really sinister poison that turns your liver into soup. First you get sick, then you feel like you're getting better so you don't go to the doctor and then it's over, slow, excruciating and irreversible. Oh, and I loved the yellow room Wilson stayed in. Cox was brilliant.
The Straight Story WAS slow and really odd for Lynch. My favorite Lynch of all time and one of my favorite movies of all time is The Elephant Man. I liked The Straight Story, too.
Thanks for the reviews.
They must have turned you into a little green biscuit. Has anyone ever tried to capitalize on the concept. Marketed a snack food called Soylent Green? "Grups are fun"!
Grups was short for grownups in a Startrek episode.
If you don't love it, don't tell me!
I have nothing more to add. I agree on all. It is perhaps the worst movie I have ever seen.
I can't wait for you to see it. You have to see it in the theater only because Hoffman's performance is so perfectly nuanced you don't want to miss a twitch (thought he did twitch his nose maybe ONCE too often - lol - you'll understand when you see). I am so looking forward to seeing it again and to your review. And please do catch up on reviews! If you feel up to it, make a list of your top whatever. I've seen a few lists by you lately but I'd love to see an updated best of.
Good to see you.
Saw Capote in the theater tonight. Holy mother of everything, what a movie!!!! I am giving it 4.75/5
Hoffman's performance was perhaps one of the best I have ever seen in anything by anyone. I was in awe, AWE I tell you. I honestly don't think a better job could have been done by anyone. Hoffman did Capote better than Capote.
I've read In Cold Blood and seen the movie years ago, will see it again now. Capote the movie, however, was more a portrait of the narcissist Capote was than about the murders. My husband had one minor complaint, that the other characters weren't as well developed and to me, that was the point. Capote was a narcissist. Everything was about him. And if I were the editor, I'd have used as much footage of Hoffman at his best, too, regardless of how it shortchanged everyone else.
And, WHO IS BENNETT MILLER AND WHERE HAS HE BEEN HIDING?
The direction was utter perfection. The performances he elicited from everyone were right on the money. Clifton Collins's subtle portrayal of Perry Smith was wonderful. Even Keener was kept under control. She's good as long as she's not called upon to talk or act too much. I'm betting Miller had to tell her a million times not to peck her head arrogantly as she spoke because she almost broke into that schtick once and it was nipped in the bud. Capote is in my top ten+ of all time. There were scenes in this movie that could not be improved upon in any way and, in fact, exceeded anything I expected.
Must see in theater.
If it's wine, it belongs here.
I do realize you will have absolutely no interest in this wine but, just had a glass of 2003 Home Ranch Zinfandel my husband brought home for V-Day. Zindfandel gets no respect and I happen to like it. This one was kind of pricey - 33$ but it was worth it. Fruity and big. That's what zins do best. Wasn't concentrating on what I was getting out of it but I know it was good.
Happy V-Day, Susie
This Quinta de la Rosa was just that on sale. It usually goes for 21$. I'm Ported out about now. It's one of those delicacies that lose their delicaciness if you have it too often.
I wonder if delicacy is where the word delicatessen comes from. Must be! Just never thought about it.
I'm going to call a few stores here to see if they have it. I can't believe that! How do they make money? If I could find a good 3$ wine? That would really be something.
Okay, here's one for you: I had a 1983 Fonseca Vintage Port today. It was just okay. The most interesting part of the experience was identifying the nose as being incredibly much like Kahlua - I mean REALLY like Kahlua. First I got sweet coffee and then after a series of revisions and tweaking it hit me over the head - KAHLUA.
The only other high end vintage port I'd ever had was a Graham's '85 and that was AMAZING. The styles are very different. Graham's is bigger, sweeter, fruitier, much more complex and full, lush. The Fonseca was nice but no contest. It was delightful, don't get me wrong but a 1996 Quinta de la Rosa Vintage Port (for 15$ on big sale) I had last night was better and 1/5 the price. The Fonseca was also very on sale.
I perhaps was expecting something else and didn't give myself enough time to adjust my expectations. Had only a few ounces and left it at my friends' house.
What else have I had... hmmmm. Okay, I'll think on it.
Was .19 a second ago. YOU'RE GOING TO BE SICK?!! I SOLD @.075!!!
I wish you had, too. Unreal, right? I should have gotten back in but once I sell, I get spooked. Better luck next time.
I'm going to SCREAM on MHPT. Very low float. I've been holding that one for awhile. Finally lowered my ask yesterday and sold for a few hundred extra bucks just as buying pressure was coming in. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! I have to stop rubbing elbows with Chu :)
I say that with affection, of course.
I remember the scene well. It was awesome. Maybe I'll start playing with that quote myself. I can think of a few doozies.
And no, saw it before - long time ago.
I'm going to buy the soundtrack. A few wonderful scenes, the music ones. Great movie.
I might be in the minority. I liked it the old way. I could return something to my inbox that I accidentally repsonded to without keeping by filing it, then returning it to inbox. Oh well.
Jaws (the original) - 4.25/5
The scene below deck when they're showing each others' scars... actually, the minute they get on that boat, it REALLY starts getting good. Quint is spectacular, what a character. Dreyfus gives a flawless performance as well. Brody was equally amazing. I mean, after a certain point, movie making doesn't get much better. Not affected. A certain innocence from the era adds to the beauty of it all. I enjoyed the hell out of seeing Jaws again by chance on TV.
Caught the end of The Shining. What hokey hyped up malarky. It was like, anything goes whether it makes sense or not. I HATED Jack Nicholson's wicked snarly face thing he does and I felt no compassion for Shelley Duvall's character whatsoever, but she WAS pretty good at playing a clueless gawk pain in the bumm. That damned kid with his froggy voiced "redrum". I was like, STFU already. 2.75/5 for being a curiosity. I was at a bonfire party on the beach with a bunch of European friends (of mine, I didn't crash it) and they all felt that The Shining was one of the best movies ever made. In fact, a few of them said it was their favorite movie of all time. Those Europeans gotta get out more.
Hustle & Flow - 4.25/5
GREAT movie. Turn on the subtitles for backup, though. Heavy Memphis accents at times. I was taken off guard by how good this movie is. Very few false moves. I think I might even want to see it again... soon.
How's it shakin in that entertainment center, derf?
THANKS!!!!!!!!! Good luck!
Thank you. It looks really good to me. What do you think?
