It’s Time to Grow Up, America
by Frank Shepard
http://boropulse.com/2013/11/its-time-to-grow-up-america/
http://boropulse.com/
Here’s our problem, America. We’re immature, uncultured, unevolved and unintelligent. We’re childish. We’re gullible, fearful, cowardly, selfish, and averse to suffering. And it’s killing our country.
That’s Obama’s problem. He’s too mature, cultured, evolved and intelligent. We’re not ready for him.
I blame most of our arrested development on religion. It has kept us babies for centuries. We’re credulous; we believe the silliest things and have no discernment for truth. Religious notions of the afterlife have fostered an “us and them” mentality where “we” get paradise and “they” suffer and we’re okay with it. We’ve lost our soul. We believe in a kind of economic Wild West where individual self-interest is the bomb and will ensure the survival of the fittest. In our fantasy cult of economic anarchy, fellow Americans justify turning on each other in a kind of bloodsport. It allows otherwise good people to run roughshod over our neighbors. We’re horrified by the phrase “redistribution of wealth” as if our fellow Americans in need would have to pry the filthy lucre from our greedy clutch.
What are we afraid of? Reality. Nietzsche wrote, “To live is to suffer,” and Orwell wrote, “Most people get a fair amount of fun out of their lives, but on balance life is suffering, and only the very young or the very foolish imagine otherwise.” We can take more suffering than we think, especially when we stick together—which is probably the point of our existence if there is one. There are great benefits in suffering. Suffering produces perseverance, character and hope. Life is just hard . . . for everyone. No one comes through unscathed. The universality of suffering, as evil as it seems, has a bonding effect. When we realize we’re not special, our suffering is not unique, and we both need help and can give help, we’re empowered to empathize with each other. Thich Nhat Hanh said in a recent interview, “I would not like to send my children to a place where there is no suffering, because in such a place they have no way to learn how to be understanding and compassionate.” It is possible to gain the world and lose one’s soul. Mandela said, “Our human compassion binds us the one to the other—not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future.”
Our current economic trajectory driven by fear is unsustainable. If we don’t grow up, realize that the perfect life is a delusion, join the human race, be thoughtful of our neighbors, and live within our collective means, then our lack of self-restraint, proven by our inability to self-govern our extravagant spending and thus our extravagant incomes, will no doubt ensure the expansion of governmental regulations. It’s true of parenting: when the child’s self-government lapses, intervention becomes necessary. Freedoms are for grown-ups. So if you like big government and the loss of freedoms, keep expanding the wealth gap; intervention is coming.
More than any time in American history, company executives and stockholders are victims of this childishness. In order to support their delusions and fears, they must make more money in one week than the workers make in a year. This chasm is ten times broader than it was in the ’70s. This demand puts a strain on the economy and forces companies to lay off employees, to seek cheaper labor outside of America, and to deplete the benefits for those lucky enough to keep their jobs. It has crippled the economy for America’s working middle class. Only deluded addicts could look at the evidence and continue to justify stuffing their insatiable appetites and deny the adverse effects on the economy.
Enough is never enough. Like spoiled children, we hinge our happiness on that next upgrade or that new thing, we cannot restrain ourselves. We’re in hot pursuit of the perfect life—a chasing of the wind—and only maturation or intervention will save us.
The reality check is we live in a finite world with limited resources. Money doesn’t grow on trees. Travel options are limited for most Americans. We’re stuck with what we’ve got. Adam Smith taught that capitalism relied upon the moral consideration of the entire community. When we lose our sense of connectedness, we’re out of touch with reality.
The gap between the haves and have-nots has been growing for 30 years. Even during the recession, which could’ve served as a wake-up call, the gap only widened. Since 2008, the earnings of the top 1 percent of Americans have risen by 11.2 percent, while the income of the other 99 percent has declined. In 2012, the top 10 percent of earners took more than half of the country’s total income—the highest in American history. It’s not sustainable.
This delusion is actually something from which we all suffer. None of us wait until everyone has enough to eat or a roof over their heads before we buy that superfluous item. We all are tempted to spend money as fast as it comes in. Perhaps the best we can hope for is a small tweak on the collective conscious of the general population; a slight return to the neighborly America I grew up in. Maybe America could get its soul back if we simply heeded Albert Schweitzer’s advice: “Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight.” Don’t look away, Rocketman. We need everyone to do their part, from the office to the factory, to sustain a healthy economy that will prosper our nation. We need everyone to rein it in, to live within our national means, not just the government.
If she's our best chance to get rid of the clown we have now then I'll even campaign for her. I just don't know enough about her yet, except she's got pretty deep pockets herself. Kathleen is pretty well like but I don't know if she can beat Walker. I have a friend that's very involved and was meeting with Mary Burke today, waiting to get her report.
It Will Be "All Out Hell" Over 2 New GOP Anti-Abortion/Anti-Birth Control Bills
did this POS not learn a thing from Virginia
Republicans in Wisconsin aren't done regulating lady parts despite 2 bills passed earlier that vastly restrict abortions and mandate ultrasounds. The quickly rammed through bills were signed in secret by Scott Walker who wanted to avoid the publicity that dogged Republicans in Virginia and caused the Governor of that state to be renamed "Governor Ultrasound".
They're not done exerting more control over womens bodies and one State Senator is promising "all out hell" if they proceed.
A Democratic state senator promised "all out hell" next week if Republicans stick to their plan to take up a controversial bill restricting abortion for public workers and limiting access to contraception for employees of religious organizations.
Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton) said Tuesday's session could mirror one in June, when Senate President Mike Ellis (R-Neenah) broke the base of his gavel as he slammed it down to quiet Democrats upset over passing a different abortion bill. Footage of those raucous proceedings was featured in an ad targeting Ellis run by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin.
Republicans who run the Senate are tentatively planning to approve two abortion bills on Tuesday.
One would ban any abortions that are sought because of the sex of the fetus. The other would prevent public employees' health plans from covering most abortions, and would also strictly limit the ability of employees of religious organizations to get contraception through their insurance plans.
That's right. If you're a public employee, you won't be able to get an abortion and if you work for a religious organization (like a hospital), no birth control for you.
In case you've forgotten, this is how Republicans rammed through these bills in June with only 1 speaker and no debate:
Yes, Mike Ellis broke his gavel telling Democrats to sit down and shut up. After the ram through, the State Senate, as you can see, quickly adjourned. Democracy doesn't exist for the GOP.
Once again, Republicans refused to hold public hearings, required for major changes. Republicans, however, say that public hearings are "stalling tactics" and refuse to hold them.
While Planned Parenthood sued and received an injunction on the recent hospital admitting privileges requirement law for abortion providers, the mandatory ultrasound law has gone into effect unchallenged. It takes money to litigate and the worst law was the one mandating that abortion providers have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.
Naturally, Republican Attorney General Van Hollen has appealed the injunction to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals which has scheduled a hearing on December 3. They will then rule whether or not the injunction stands.
No one knows what's going to happen when these new atrocities become law in Wisconsin. They will, of course, become law because the GOP is in the majority and ignore democracy and even the law to ram through every extremist measure they want. The side of sanity doesn't have the deep pockets of RW billionaires to litigate everything in sight.
For Your Amusement:
The notoriously unreliable and facts optional Politifact has given a rare Pants on Fire to Scott Walker (rare for a Republican to even get questionable ratings) after his claim (in a bulk email sent to supporters) that taxpayers in Wisconsin will save about $640 over 4 years from his shiny new $100 million tax relief. Bwahahahaha!
Even Walkers puppets said it would amount to only $33 per year and others have said the "savings" on the typical home would amount to only between $11 - 13 per year.
So, yeah, Scotty. Lie all you want, but this time you went way, way too far and even your pals at Politifact had to call you out.

6 Things You Might Not Know About Bill de Blasio, New York's Mayor-in-Waiting
Come Tuesday night, Bill de Blasio will likely be the first Democratic mayor-elect of New York City in two decades. De Blasio is expected to crush his Republican rival Joe Lhota. Most national attention has focused on the implications of de Blasio's win for the future of big-city liberalism, contrasting the humble Park Slope public advocate with Wall Street-friendly billionaire Michael Bloomberg. The city's rich denizens are supposedly quivering with fear that the new Democratic mayor will hit them with a small tax increase to fund universal pre-K, though Gov. Andrew Cuomo is poised to squash any tax hikes from NYC.
Here are several fun facts about de Blasio that you might have missed amid the class warfare.
He was born Warren Wilhelm, Jr.:
De Blasio has a fraught relationship with his deceased father. A navy vet who lost his left leg in World War II, Warren Wilhelm fell prey to McCarthyism in the 1950s. His career as an economist at the Commerce Department derailed when he and his wife were questioned about their views on communism. Wilhelm Sr. later became an alcoholic and de Blasio's parents divorced. "The pain he caused people, even if he didn’t mean to, just so many people were badly affected," de Blasio said in an interview with The New York Times. "I think I really was angered by that." By the end of high school the he had ditched his given name and opted for his childhood nickname Bill and his mother's maiden name.
He worked on Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign:
De Blasio managed Hillary Clinton's first run for office, but it ended poorly as the Clintons came to view him as weak and indecisive. Longtime Clinton pal Patti Solis Doyle was brought in from Washington to spearhead the final months of the campaign. Per The New York Times:
Despite having the title, Mr. de Blasio hardly fit the profile of a traditional campaign manager.
While he had a say on all sorts of matters, including finance and personnel, he did not have signoff power on many key issues, and did not enjoy the same access to Mrs. Clinton as other advisers, according to more than two dozen people involved in the race. Then still the first lady, she often relied on a team of White House aides she had known for years.
It doesn't seem like there are too many hurt feelings, though. Both Hillary and Bill endorsed de Blasio, but not until he'd already secured the Democratic nomination. Hillary also headlined a million-dollar fundraiser for de Blasio in late October.
His was a lefty activist in his 20s:
De Blasio got his start in progressive politics by supporting the Sandinistas in Nicaragua during the 1980s:
Mr. de Blasio became an ardent supporter of the Nicaraguan revolutionaries. He helped raise funds for the Sandinistas in New York and subscribed to the party’s newspaper, Barricada, or Barricade. When he was asked at a meeting in 1990 about his goals for society, he said he was an advocate of “democratic socialism.”
He worked as a political organizer at the Quixote Center in Maryland for his first job out of grad school, soliciting donations to send to Nicaragua.
He worked out at his local YMCA during the campaign:
Hard to imagine Bloomberg working up a sweat at the local gym. From New York magazine:
If I needed any further indication that the city is on the verge of a radical change in mayoral style from Bloomberg, who seems as if he were born in a pin-striped suit, there’s the 52-year-old De Blasio himself: He’s just back from his daily workout at the 9th Street Y and wearing a frayed, sweat-soaked blue T-shirt and baggy gray sweatpants.
He was evicted from his first New York apartment:
He moved to SoHo in 1983 but couldn't stay there since the apartment was an illegal sublet. Perhaps that experience will make him more sympathetic to those city residents who lack affordable housing than New York's current mayor.
He's not a Yankees fan:
In fact, he roots for the Bronx Bombers' despised rival, the Boston Red Sox. De Blasio must be feeling confident heading into the election, since he couldn't help himself from bragging about the Red Sox's World Series success, even when he campaigned in the Bronx.

wow, thx for sharing........
Most people here know our situation...wife had a decent job....since I'm a self employed RE Appraiser we were both covered with pretty good insurance thru her work. In 01/10 she was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma, had surgery in May lost her job, and insurance. We had Cobra that ran out in July of 2010 and were told by Unity insurance that they would even give us a quote and would be dropped because of her pre-existing. not even an obnoxious quote)She finally was put on disability but not after massive bills and red tape. Scammy insurance companies won't be able to pull this crap anymore thanks to Obamacare...another story I heard.....add to the list of pre-existing conditions insurance companies used to deny coverage over... Yeast infections. not kidding.. actually denied a womans claim years later for something like ovarian cancer because she failed to report on her ins application that she had been to a doctor years earlier and for treatment for a simple yeast infection. i think it was just discovered during a routine Gyn exam so her prescription on record was their justification for denial...
Health Care Forum & What I Learned....by Heather Rayne
11/01/2013
Picture
I have recently written about the Affordable Care Act. Since writing that, I have learned some additional details...
This past week, I had the educational pleasure of attending a great forum put on by the wonderful volunteers with Enroll Racine. This was a health care informational forum presented by Kevin Kane from Citizen Action of Wisconsin. It was extremely interesting and informative so I thought I would share with you what I have learned.
A few components of the ACA are already in effect. And others are to follow January of 2014.
One example of something that is currently in effect is the rule that children cannot be denied or charged higher rates for pre-existing conditions. January of 2014, this will be true for EVERYONE. Before ACA, it was legal for insurance companies to deny children with cancer and other pre-existing conditions. It is now illegal for them to do so.
Pre-existing conditions can mean a whole pluthera of things from acne to stress to pregnancy. There is a list as long as my arm of conditions which could lead to insurance companies to denying or dropping customers. More than 1.3 million Wisconsinites under the age of 65 have been diagnosed with a pre-existing condition.
Picture
In fact, simply being a WOMAN has been considered a pre-existing condition for many years. Right now, women pay up to 50% more than men for the exact same coverage - just because of their gender. Beginning in 2014, this will be illegal.
Also in effect now, anyone 26 years of age or under can be covered under their parent's health insurance policies. Because of this rule, it is estimated that over 6 million people are now covered due to this rule.
The ACA ensures that Americans will have the opportunity to take responsibility for their own health care coverage by making insurance accessible and affordable. It also holds insurance companies accountable for their practices. Beginning 2014, Congress will be required to choose from the same exact plans offered to all American citizens. It will be in their own best interests to keep these practices honest and ethical.
Because of the ACA, preventative care and screenings will be covered with NO deductible and NO co-pays. Preventative care is the most crucial step in our health care. Screenings, testing and wellness visits are far cheaper - for everyone - than the treatment of advanced illnesses. Not to mention, it will save lives.
A friend of mine, a woman in her 50s, is now suffering from colon cancer. Colo-rectal cancer runs in her family and she was at an increased risk. However, because she did not have insurance, she did not get a colonoscopy at the recommended age of 50 (earlier with family history). This screening would have caught the cancer early enough to avoid the multitude of surgeries and treatments she is now enduring.
There will no longer be lifetime limits on insurance plans. There are many cases in which children have met their lifetime limits before entering adolecence. If someone is diagnosed with a chronic or severe illness, it is easy to approach those limits very quickly. Medical bills are the leading cause of bankruptcy in this country. Lifetime limits will no longer be an issue.
Not only will it now be illegal for insurance companies to deny a person coverage, it will also be illegal for them to drop a customer if an illness is diagnosed. This has been a very common practice. It will be no longer.
By holding the insurance companies accountable, there will be caps on overhead and excessive profits. This will keep premiums down and used for actual healthcare and not paperwork or CEO bonuses.
The new marketplace, which will provide insurance plan options to consumers, works much like travel sites such as Travelocity or Expedia. When you log on, you will be able to enter your information and chose from different plans, companies and levels of coverage.
The marketplace is NOT for people on Medicare. Medicare will not change aside from the fact that there will be more oversight. But those on Medicare will not be affected by the ACA.
These marketplaces were designed to be set up by each individual state. However, because our Govorner chose to challenge the ACA and not comply, Wisconsin (and states in similar situations) has a marketplace set up by the federal government.
The cost of insurance premiums will be subsidized with an IMMEDIATE tax credit (subtracted directly from your premium cost) based on a sliding scale depending on income. There will also be insurance co-op options. These co-ops are non-profit and will keep the premium costs down due to competition.
Unfortunately, there are those who fall into a gap which should have been covered by Wisconsin's Badgercare system instead of the ACA Marketplace. When Walker denied the ACA funding, he denied Wisconsinites billions in federal money which was to cover those who fell into this gap. Because of that, 98,000 low income earners have been or will be kicked off Badgercare. This also added an extra $149 million to the state budget. Wisconsin CAN accept this funding at any time. It is not too late. This is crucial and something we cannot stop fighting for - but I will talk about that later.
Luckily, these people who are being denied Badgercare will have access to the ACA Marketplace. But it may be more difficult for them to afford the premiums. Again, this really needs to be something we fight for and yell about. LOUDLY. We must demand that Wisconsin takes this federal funding we - as tax payers - have coming to us. States which have complied with the ACA - states which have set up their own marketplaces - have been able to offer much more affordable plans. By not taking this funding - it hurts everyone.
There are 4 levels of plans - bronze, silver, gold and platinum. There is also a catastrophic plan as an option. The cheaper the plan, the higher the deductibles/co-pays. However, you should remember that preventative care is covered with no deductible or co-pay. So if you are young and in decent health - a lower premium plan may be all you need right now. Just make sure you keep up with your preventative care!!
We all know there have been glitches in the Healthcare.gov website. However, they are not as dire as reported. Many, many people have been able to register and enroll. It may just take a little patience at first. Things will begin to work smoothly. You can also look at the plans available to you before you even register. Simply visit www.healthcare.gov or you can call 1-800-318-2596 to talk with a person who will help you enroll. Citizen Action of Wisconsin also has a helpline 1-855-318-2596.
Next week I will attend a training on Badgercare. I will share with you what I learn there as well.
