Trading Alert: American Water Star (OTC BB: AMWS)
In the nutritional world there is a mega trend taking place. Obesity has become an epidemic in the US, plaguing 40 million Americans. Type II diabetes is a raging epidemic. It is self inflicted; induced by diet. There has been a 76% increase in Type II diabetes since 1990.
Nutritionist generally blame the obesity epidemic on two main factors. First: Fast Food and/or junk food. The processed foods we eat today are loaded with sugar and fat, leading to obesity. Secondly, our sedentary life style. Thanks to technology, our daily activities are much less physical than they used to be.
Within the food and beverage industry there is a mega trend taking place. Americans are starting to recognize we all need to make dietary changes to achieve health. The low carb revolution is here, and the standard bearer names are Atkins, and South Beach. Books like Dr. Phil's Ultimate Weight Solution are flying off the shelves, along with the South Beach Diet.
More main stream advertisers are pumping the "low carb" theme because it works. There are a few companies with leading edge ideas who will experience dramatic growth over the next few years as a result of the low carb revolution. Here's the OTC Journal's idea in this arena, a company I believe will grow very rapidly this year:
American Water Star's (OTC BB: AMWS) Revolutionary New Products
History is replete with small and creative food and beverage companies which came out of nowhere with a new idea. Ground floor investors made fortunes.
Here's a few examples:
In 1994, Quaker Oats bought Snapple for $1.7 billion.
More recently, PepsiCo purchase South Beach Beverage Co (SOBE) for $370 million.
From 1990 to 1991, upstart flavored carbonated beverage company Clearly Canadian ran from about $2 to a split adjusted high of $120 over one year.
American Water Star has emerged on the scene out of nowhere to capitalize on the low carb revolution. The company has developed new zero sugar, zero carb, zero calorie non carbonated flavored beverages.
Rather than start a brand from scratch, the company decided to license a recognizable household name. You are looking at their flagship product, the Hawaiian Tropic beverage line. The four flavors include Pineapple Pink Grapefruit, Passion Orange Guava, Kiwi Strawberry, and Kiwi Lemon Lime.
The beverages are sweetened by Splenda, the revolutionary new sugar replacement which is not considered an "artificial sweetener", and has zero carbs. I can tell you from personal experience, these beverages taste great.
Additional lines include Geyser Sport, the kid's beverage line. This one is starting to hit grocery shelves now, and is gaining momentum driven by new legislation. California recently passed a law entitled the Childhood Obesity Prevention Act of 2003, which bans high sugar/ high caffeine beverages from the schools. Some brilliant legislators finally figured out that our kids will learn better if they don't spend their school day artificially jacked up from stimulants.
40 school districts in Minnesota have started serving Geyser Sport, and California schools are starting to pick it up on an individual basis. American Water will be introducing Geyser Sport in the collapsible packaging all parents love. Geyser Sport comes in six flavors: strawberry kiwi, cherry, wild berry, watermelon kiwi, citrus punch, and fruit punch.
The company is also expanding into the drink mixer beverage line. As many of you probably know, blended tropical drinks are loaded with sugar, the evil carb. It is nearly impossible to find any reasonable substitutes for these products.
As you can see from the picture, American Water is introducing a line of sugar free, calorie free drink mixers. Margaritas, Pina Coladas, Mai Tais, and others are included in the product offerings.
This will be a lower volume, higher margin product line for the company. The company is capitalizing on the South Beach diet by naming the line to correspond.
The marketing campaign includes its own little mascot, a character you might see in advertisements over the coming months. Meet Fling, the guy who claims "it's all about the Bling", and has been created to become the low carb poster boy.
As the new zero carb, zero calorie line of drink mixers starts appearing on store shelves around the country, Fling will be appearing on signs and posters at key locations. The company has some very ambitious marketing plans for the Fling character, and he will be rolled out this summer in conjunction with the seasonal demand for tropical drink mixers.
You can visit www.americanwaterstar.com to learn more about their beverage lines.
Growth and Expansion Plans
The Hawaiian Tropic line was introduced last July, and spent the second half of 2003 gaining momentum amongst stores and distributors. American Water Star achieved $3.8 million in revenues last year which is really a start up number. Revenues doubled every quarter in the latter half of the year, and I am anticipating significant revenue acceleration this year as the Hawaiian Tropic line gains traction and new lines are introduced.
The company already owns three of its own bottling plants, and more acquisitions are being contemplated. Two are now operational, and the third is being retrofitted to come on line.
Due to increasing demand, American Water currently is using seven other bottling facilities on an outsourced basis to meet the demand for its products.
Retailers carrying the product include Albertsons (AR, NM, and TX), Ingles (200 markets in SE US), Foodland (29 stores in Hawaii), Longs Drug, 7-11, and many others.
Today, with the news after the close concerning the addition of Wal-Mart Superstores, this stock is probably going gain a whole new life and a whole new audience.
To add further to rapidly accelerating growth, American Water recently added O&S Distributors to its customer base. O&S is not a household name, but it is the 2nd largest wholesale food distributor in the US, and one of the largest privately held companies in the world. O&S boasts a distribution network of 4,000 independent stores and supermarkets on its distribution list.
Conclusion: Current Value and Upside Potential
As you can see from the chart, which goes back to last summer when American Water first introduced the Hawaiian Tropic line, investors have been keyed in to the company.
The company has 75 million shares I&O, so based on today's closing price, the market is already assigning a $135 million market value to American Water.
Since large beverage companies generally trade at about 5x annual sales, you could argue the market is already pricing in $27 million in sales this year. However, large beverage companies don't double in size every quarter, and accelerate from there. PepsiCo will be lucky to squeak out 8% sales growth this year, and most of that will come from acquisitions.
Today, after the market closed, AMWS made the Wal-Mart announcement which you can read below. As a result, a break through the old high of $2.38 is probably imminent, and suggests much higher levels could be in store.
This company is one of the first to market; in the right place at the right time with the right products. The low carb revolution is just getting started, and the health care industry is beginning to grapple with the Type II Diabetes and obesity epidemics.
With Wal-Mart coming on board, there is no telling where this stock might trade in the short term. I believe $3 could be in the cards. We'll have to see what happens tomorrow. If you have a Wal-Mart Superstore in your area, try to get over there this weekend and find Hawaiin Tropic. Send me your comments to editor@otcjournal.com.
The time to act is now. If Wal-Mart loves it, why shouldn't you. Anybody who owned Clearly Canadian in early 1990 experienced the returns from a growing young beverage company with a new idea. AMWS could be Clearly Canadian 14 years later.

From OTC
To OTC Journal Members:
As I mentioned in the weekend edition, one of the big winners from 2003 is kicking the week off with an outstanding news event. Tomorrow after the close I am going to introduce my microcap idea for the exploding market in low carb/sugar free; Atkins/South Beach food products. I have a really strong feeling about this one, so stay tuned.
VirTra Systems (OTC BB: VTSI); US Air Force Places Initial Order
VirTra was one of the big winners of the second half of 2003. After making a four fold move from the introduced level of $.10, the stock made a new all time high last October at $.47. Since then, the stock has been grinding back down to about the mid point of its move.
VirTra Systems has taken its years of expertise and experience in virtual reality technology and turned it into products which are timely for today's unsettled world. In September of last year, VirTra introduced its 360 degree Judgemental-Use-Of-Force training simulator. You are looking at a picture a simulator in use for training law enforcement officers. I'll have better pictures in future editions.
Customers already include Mexico and India. Systems were ordered before the company even had the first working prototype set up for users. In fact, the first working version of the IVR 300 was unveiled last month at the TREXPO Show in Long Beach (Law Enforcement's Tactical Response Show).
I took the time to attend the show, not only to experience the technology first hand, but also to view competing technologies. My conclusion on the competition: There isn't any.
Every other use-of-force training simulator on the market today wasn't much different than the shooting games you would find at the arcade on the Santa Monica pier. You simply shoot a beam at a two dimensional image on a screen.
VirTra's technology puts you right in a real environment. Things are happening all around you, and you have to react. You are holding the actual weapon either the military or law enforcement would use in a similar situation.
I was able to shoot down a terrorist suicide bomber holding some children hostage. Unfortunately, I was killed from behind by a car thief in the next simulation.
Observing the reaction of law enforcement experts was far more interesting than experiencing the simulator myself. People from law enforcement were very impressed, and I personally cannot imagine any major metro area in the US without several of these for training police. For a minimal cost, law enforcement who have been trained on this system will simply be better when handling use-of-force situations in the real world.
My impression from first hand observation: It is simply a matter of time before VirTra Systems starts getting major sales traction in US and International law enforcement community. While we're waiting, the military is starting to make purchases.
First Military Contract- US Air Force Steps Up
VirTra Systems announced its first purchase order from the US Military today. In light of recent activity in microcaps that have delivered events of this nature, I would expect the stock to trade extremely well as a result of this news.
According to the press release, the Air Force sent a team to the Trexpo show to experience the simulator. An order for the first unit followed shortly behind.
In the press release Michael Kitchen, VP of Sales for VirTra, discloses: "This is a huge endorsement by the US military for utilization of our IVR HD series simulators. We are already working towards finalization of plans to install additional training systems at further Air Force locations."
It is evident from the language in the quote that the company anticipates further orders from the Air Force. Observers of the interaction between different branches of the armed services know that once one branch of the military has something new and useful, they all need it.
For $.25 is seems like a great bet that VirTra can keep delivering more and larger multi unit sales. The company is in the sweet spot of the market today, as the unfortunate recent escalation of violence in Iraq has put homeland security and defense related companies back on the front burner for investors.
I still believe this stock will eventually find its way to $1. There has been a lag since the end of October when the stock made its new all time high, but the market may have assumed the big sales were going to materialize sooner.
So far this year they have achieved a multi unit sale to Mexico and opened channels of distribution in India. Perhaps the news of the first order from the US Air Force is their best achievement to date, as it marks the first domestic sale. Their simulator has both military and law enforcement uses, so the upside is virtually unlimited.
I provided a longer term chart today, so you could get the big picture. The chart goes back to last July when I first wrote about this company at $.10. As looked at since last July, the stock is parked on a perfect 50% retracement. This suggests the stock is ready to begin climbing again.
If you think a four fold move in 2004 is too optimistic, recall that the stock made a four fold move in the second half of 2003. It happened before, so it could happen again.

UPDATE - ChevTex, Exxonmobil win Nigeria-Sao Tome oil block
Saturday April 24, 10:03 am ET
(Adds quote and background)
ABUJA, April 24 (Reuters) - U.S. oil giants ChevronTexaco (NYSE:CVX - News) and ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM - News) have won rights to drill for oil in the highly sought after block one of Nigeria and Sao Tome's Joint Development Zone in the Gulf of Guinea, the licensing authority said on Saturday.
The Joint Ministerial Council which takes political responsibility for the JDZ said Chevron which won a 51 percent stake, will operate the block. Exxonmobil has 40 percent, while Norway's Equity Energy Resources has nine percent.
The council said it will announce winners of the seven other blocks in the zone at a future date.
"The JMC will deliberate further on the results of the other blocks and the decisions will be communicated in due course," the council said in a statement after a meeting in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
The award of the priced block is the highpoint of a six-month licensing process of nine offshore blocks which marks the first steps of the tiny island nation of Sao Tome and Principe into the world of big oil.
ExxonMobil and little-known Environmental Remediation Holdings Corp (OTC BB:ERHC.OB - News) had exercised pre-emptive rights to minority stakes in seven of the nine blocks, which the companies earned by doing preliminary exploration work for Sao Tome prior to the establishment of the joint authority in 2000.
Exxonmobil took 40 percent in block one, while Texas-based ERHC, a subsidiary of Nigeria's privately-owned Chrome Energy, claimed a 30 percent option in block two, the second most sought-after acreage.
The Gulf of Guinea, shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Sao Tome, has seen a swathe of huge oil discoveries in deep ocean depths over the past decade.
The United States sees the area as a strategic supplement to its oil supplies from the war-torn Middle East.
The nine JDZ blocks are thought to hold some 10 billion barrels of hydrocarbon.
Each bid comprised signature bonuses to be paid up front, production bonuses to be paid after a certain volume of oil has been produced, and community projects planned in Nigeria and Sao Tome.
Revenue from any oil produced from the area will be split 60/40 in favour of Nigeria, according to terms of the bilateral accord.
In October's bidding round, the highest bid was $123 million offered by ChevronTexaco for block one, the second highest was for block two, where Nigerian dredging company Foby Engineering bid $113 million. Foby was also top bidder for block nine.
Sahara Energy was the top bidder for blocks three and five, ECL International lead the pack for block four, Maurel et Prom was top bidder for block six, and Fusion (London:FOG.L - News) was sole bidder for block seven. Block eight attracted no interest.
The two governments had said they would consider technical criteria such as experience in deepwater exploration and production, local content and financial capability of the bidders in selecting winners.
