Yes, going uphill with those puppies on can really warm you up! Poles help.
Yes, the sun is shining in lovely downtown San Jose!
Extel, Just because you posted an article about him I didn't assume that you were a groupie, so not to worry. :) I actually enjoyed reading it, so thanks for sharing.
OT Got out of Dodge and I'm wondering how much more snow I got up there.
Tried snowshoes for the first time the other day. What fun and what a workout!
Thanks Joe, that makes sense and helps me.
Ben Stein creeps me out ever since I heard the story of how he hit on a friend's 19-year-old daughter a couple of years ago. When she showed her disinterest, he said something along the lines of: Do you know who I am? I'm Ben Stein. Gross.
<<Doug Casey has correctly pointed out that it is when the trade deficit starts to shrink, which it recently has, that you need to look for cover... because, among other things, it means the tide of U.S. dollars is beginning to wash back up on U.S. shores.>>
I don't follow this. I can understand if the trade deficit shrinks it can be from a shrinking economy, but I get lost on how US dollars washing up on our shores as illustrated by foreign investments in US companies is a harbinger of doom.
Since this tidbit came from an "advertorial" I can see my question is not the main point of the article. However, I believe Doug Casey is still respected and I wish I understood more of his comment.
Glad you're smiling! I started making money on DECK when I went long. LOL. Actually make a short trade yesterday too.
Had to hose off the satellite dish this am. I have over 10 inches of snow and more on the way. Since we don't plow the roads on the mtn it could get interesting. Looks like I'll have to try to escape sometime today.
I wish I held on to my QID! Good job, Pantera with that and your patience on DO. You were there and ready!
Like many I have a lot of stuff underwater and am trying to be patient. Wish I had more dry powder.
Having fun with swings on DECK though.
Yeah, I saw Soros wrote that. I was actually kind of surprised that BasserDan posted it since he is such a Ron Paul fan. :)
This guy points fingers at US authorities as bad regulators and then complains that the lack of regulations is part of the problem. Does this mean other authorities - Chinese, European, Brazilian are better or that a planned economy is the way to go? I don't get his complaint about US protectionism either.
Its a great return if CFC stays above $5 and you get called. It looks as though expectations are for a market bounce of some type soon and that should help get BAC and CFC higher. That said, these stocks look like they want to go lower. I'm a scaredy cat, Joe, but you seem to be able to do a great job of calculating the risks in these type of plays. I was going to ask you how you come up with some of these ideas. I have been catching up on posts and I saw your wonderful trade with the preferreds.
Choad, I'm catching up on old posts and I saw this question. I doesn't look as though anyone answered it (at least in public). The answer is Yes.
<<This always confuses me....can someone varify I have this right.
If I was a canadian nursery grower selling a 1 gallon plant for $3.00 U.S. at exchange rate of .85,and the canadian $ goes from .85 to par (which it has) then the Canadian grower must raise his price to have a commensurate return.....is this correct? I know it's a stupid question but this always causes me confusion>>
AMGN getting a little pop. I have no idea why. In edit. sees earnings over guidance
I misunderstood, Newly. I thought you were looking into the possibility of moving. So my thoughts on Rio were just for your day-to-day personal safety. I don't recall the Mexico fiasco. How long ago did this happen? A man I know owns a place in Puerto Vallarta and he's "owned" it since the early 80's at least. I believe at that time an investor needed a Mexican partner.
I wouldn't consider Rio a safe haven. I have no idea about Buenas Aires. What about Costa Rica, or in Panama there is a place that is supposed to be the "new" Costa Rica? Met someone yesterday who purchased a future retirement home in Mexico for $30,000. She spent another $20,000 putting in AC, pool and some other improvements.
Your post was on my mind when I responded. :) I didn't remember where I saw it though.
E trade bank is looking for deposits. :)
Actually some banks require the account owner to appear in person. That is what my credit untion requires anyway. Seems odd in this day of internet banking but maybe it was because it was a joint account with an unrelated individual.
Hi Zeev, I'm just one of many continuing to wish you good health. Hopefully you will soon will have completed your treatments. Its not the same here with your limited posting, despite the other wonderful contributors. Who knows, when you are back to feeling great you might not want to do this trading and posting anymore either. All the best to you and your family.
Good job turning apple into gold (and silver)!
Biotechs have been kind of weak. Almost as bad as tech stocks.
How are things in the oil and ng patch?
That was a sweet play, AD.
When DNA opens you might be able to get a great price! It looks as though they are going to zero.
I'll take luck! I have a crystal ball -- it doesn't work so good.
So, are you looking to get back into DNA or are you waiting until after the news?
Its those reuseable shopping totes you've been handing out Joe!
Way to go!!!
I wish I sold my DNA when you did. Right now I'm debating what to do with it given the headline I read that was negative on Avastin use for breast cancer being approved by committee for FDA.
Hi BasserDan, thanks for your continued posts in/on the precious metals biz. As one of the impacted from the seemingly overreaction to the news at NG, I was wondering your thoughts on adding here or waiting a bit.
I also need to clean up my portfolio. In attention since this summer as allowed some dogs to lie about and I find that cash accumulation is probably in my best interest. One of my classified "dogs" is a small investment in UXG. If I remember correctly, you liked the company but thought there were better plays. Not sure if you are following McEwen these days. I would love to hear your insights if you have any to share.
Thanks Joe. Do you have a news service that you subscribe to? Schwab Street Smart Pro isn't very timely with their news.
Hey AD, I sold my GRMN for 2 points, reducing my loss a little. Too chicken to hold for the weekend, which caused the debacle in the first place. Oh well. Won't be around to watch.
There was more to that article from Boomberg, where someone else questions Birinyi's thoughts. I think I read it on the turnips thread.
What is going on with VRSN?
maybe some short covering on GRMN into the close?
<<You know what to do>>
Yes, I went and got myself a poppy seed bagel and now I'm feeling better. :)
I actually bought some GRMN after the decline, so right now I'm up a few. We'll see if it lasts.
I haven't done the covered call thing lately only because I was too piggy with my asks, so none of them executed. I wasn't prepared for the weakness that we have seen and I am not able to spend that much time lately on stock matters. Just trying to keep my toes in the water, so I am not totally lost when I am able to devote more time. Flying out tomorrow am for the east coast.
Re: GRMN, thanks. First I laughed and then I was pissed!!!
Great trading on this board lately. Its a good thing I don't post my trades, as I totally blew it with GRMN. I think out of four or five trades I only made money on one. The last straw was getting scared out of a position yesterday near the lows. I saw it higher after hours and then this am, BAM. Yup the MM got me big time. Such is life.
Maybe I should go back and finish the article then. Although, I must admit I lost interest when he was writing things that were true and or consequence of others besides the current administration imo.
Gee, you think this guy had an axe to grind?
Maybe it seems there are a lot of trucks because there are fewer cars on the road.
I noticed a lot of truck traffic also on I-5 but in upstate and Northern CA. Despite the season, it just seemed to be higher than usual - but I don't count them.
We had a similar discussion about DECK a couple of years back. Uggs have had unbelievable staying power. In Nordies at Valley Fair they have lots of floor space and I overheard a salesman tell someone that they order the classic style every month as they continue to be hot sellers. So, maybe CROX will do the same.
Actually, Silly Valley is doing pretty well and is a bright spot, maybe not as bright as Seattle though from what I hear....
Biotechs are having a good day (finally).
