kind of OT: does anyone posting here have any opinions on stock trading software packages and related services? I am interesting in aquiring some trading software that provides level II screens, trade simulation mode (no actual money mode) and the option to switch to real trading mode (with a service). Obviously there are a lot of other features that these packages come with and there are a lot of these packages out there. I was hoping that maybe some folks here may have already done the due dilegence to evaluate some of these packages and have come to some conclusions. Any thoughts (other than go do it yourself!)?
Doesn't this discussion beg the question 'are these names targeted at the consumer or the OEMs?'. Certainly 'Intel Inside' was a hugely successful consumer oriented marketing campaign, but that marketing campaign still exists today in roughly the same form. Furthermore I agree with your assessment that consumers are not technically savvy enough to differentiate Core Duo vs. Core 2 Duo vs. Core 3 or i7 which leads me to argue that these product naming strategies (as opposed to the platform names VPro, Centrino etc) are really geared toward OEMs who would 'get' that i7 is in another league from the Core 2 architecture.
lol, what does that mean exactly? Nothing posted here will ever matter when we face our maker on judgement day? I agree whole heartedly. Or nothing posted here will ever matter to any of us that like to monitor, theorize and make decisions about our investments? I would disagree just as strongly.
I disagree on the 'big miss' comment. Names and marketing strategies are a very subjective thing. You really need marketing focus groups to try and quantify the impact of a name and/or marketing campaign. And even then it's an imperfect measurement at best. One person's 'big miss' is another person's 'cool concept'. I for one think jumping out into a new naming convention like i7 could be a good thing for Intel. As Wouter suggested maybe the new name sets the tone for a continuation of the 'Leap Ahead' campaign.
While a breakout to the upside would be great, it has been many years since this stock has moved away from me without a retracement fairly soon after. So I'm not holding my breath thinking a major breakout is in the making. But I continue to root for such an event right along with you.
I'd say the 'decent overall market' caveat is the key. I would give almost anything to be in a 'decent overall market' however I still believe that won't arrive until 1H'09. Having said that, I will look forward to your 'I told you so' post should we reach $25 soon.
not that you asked me, but I sold some shares long today at 23.69 and then shorted a new position at 23.99. As always I hope I am wrong I will be forced to cover at 24.99. I really have no idea what forces are currently at work on INTC. I only know that I believe it is more likely that we see 22.50 again before we see $25.
what makes you think you can gloat prematurely?
No other reason other than to try to get your (our) goat. The logical mind collects multiple data points from multiple sources and exercises patience before drawing conclusions.
Kate, I have the same T61 as you albeit with XP Pro instead of Vista. My only disappointment is that I expected the heat disappation to be less than my previous thinkpads. I was hoping the 45nm CPU would run cooler in my lap but sadly this one still heats up pretty good when working remotely. I'm thinking the 90nm chipset is to blame. I guess I will have to wait for a laptop with a SSD with an a newer chipset before the heat issue becomes a thing of the past.
my wife just hit the rule of 75 on her birthday last weekend. she can now retire and get a Tiffany ashtray or something plus a modest contribution toward health insurance otherwise it's no big deal (between this week and last week that is).
There never was a market share crusade...
Hmmm, sounds like a crusade to me...note the lack of comments like 'the company remains committed to maximizing near term and long term profitability'
Advanced Micro Devices, the world’s second largest provider of x86 chips who commanded 25.3% of shipments back in Q4 2006, said at conference that it would lower its sales guidance for the first quarter of fiscal 2007. However, the company remains committed to its goal of achieving 30% and above market share.
Speaking to investors at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco, Hector Ruiz, chief executive of AMD, said chipmaker would not meet its first-quarter sales guidance of between $1.6 billion and $1.7 billion, according to report by Forbes. However, Mr. Ruiz reiterated his company’s long-term goal to own 30% of the market “to break the monopoly”.
“The environment is very competitive, very competitive. We need to break the monopoly, and for that we’ve got to get above 30% [market share],” Mr. Ruiz said.

shorts are in a tizzy <eom>
I'm looking forward to that call and will hold you to it doc. :->
Anyone have an insights into the late trading action today? Almost twice the normal volume with most of it coming at the close it would seem. Could the brokerage houses be loading up now that they got INTC to participate in the downturn with their downgrades? Could they be replaying the script from January-February again?
AAPL pushing this app store concept could really leave Intel out of the picture going forward wrt to the iPhone3 etc. I think Atom's success will depend on competing products from other OEMs so let's hope we have some great form-factors in the near future.
From Mossberg's story:
All this development effectively means the iPhone will be constantly evolving. Ahead of the App store's opening, Mossberg says Apple has "a serious chance of turning this thing into a real platform for developers," which really would make the iPhone more than just a phone.

AMD, the second-largest computer-chip maker, also may win more server sales from Intel with its new Barcelona processor, the analyst said.
I only need to think about what I would do if I were bringing up a server farm to understand that this is and will not be the case.
My guess is that the word is out that we will be hearing lowered guidance for 2H earnings. I predict that Intel will report the first signs of a slow down are starting to show up in customer sales etc. The so called 'smart money' that is still in the stock has decided to bail early.
Yet another painful lesson that trading based on FMV for a stock based on fundamentals is never immune to macro-economic factors.
I'm staying the course this time and will not bail on any of my long position no matter what. If the ship goes down, I'm going down with PSO and the rest of the crew.

I added to my long position as well at 21.59.
Bought my INTC shares back at 22.34, let's see if I can hold on to these for at least a week without hitting my stop loss.
Got whipsawed and lost theshares I bought this morning. I thought 22.39 was a safe stop-loss point, but not so. My last two trades have both been losers like this. The stock now sits at the price I paid for it, which I would have been happy with if the market makers hadn't stolen my shares.
I picked up some Intel this morning at 22.79. I'm expecting to make a buck over the next week or so.
wife says the Vista upgrade is still on hold corporate wide.
I think I paid an extra $25 to get XP Pro on my T61
I had a limit order to buy at 22.80 but it didn't go off. Raised the limit a bit hoping I catch a dip but may have missed this opportunity.
Kate I also just ordered the same machine (T61) from Lenovo over the weekend and it shipped on Tuesday, can't wait to get it. I upgraded to the T9300 processor, added the DVD, bluetooth and 3GB of memory. This will also be a return trip for me back to the Thinkpad after several years with a Dell. Sounds like we were on the same corporate refresh schedule, although this will be my own personal purchase.
Is the amount of the fine new information? Or was everyone on the board expecting a fine at this level of the stratosphere? $4.1 billion seems like a lot?
I wish I had more cash every day.
mmoy...looks like your INTC breakdown prediction was spot on. I had to dump the shares I bought from you on Monday (TIC) at a lower price this morning.
Just bought your INTC shares at 23.74 looking for a turnaround back to 24.49 within the next week.
Had a feeling that comment might press some buttons. My only retort (and you can have the last word) is that few democratics ever understand is that 'political posturing' like McCain's comment on staying in Iraq for a hundred years if that's what it takes' etc. is meant for other ears to hear. Statements like that make our enemies wonder about our leadership and what they might do, and that's a good thing.
'treating Intel better' just means leaving them alone. I have more confidence that McCain will do that than I do in the other side (Obama in particular).
Just outside of my downtown Portland condo, the masses (75K of them) gathered on Sunday to pay homage to the Senator from Illinois. Perhaps some of them would feel different if they knew their company might suffer if he were elected. But judging from the blueness that I see around here, I doubt it.
I remember some years that Intel came out publically in support of the democratic nominee (I forgot what election year it was). I think they believed at the time that getting more computers into the hands of the middle and lower economic classes would benefit the company and supporting the democratic platform was the better way to achieve that. I wonder now IF today Intel were to support a candidate, which way they would lean?
I am looking to buy back shares below $24 and should get that opportunity soon.
I'm still holding my 27.50 jan09 calls hoping to at least reach break even by September. Perhaps they could even make it into the money, something I have not even considered possible until now.
wbmw, do you still own Jan 09 leaps (now calls) with strike price of 27.50? I recollect we both bought these around the same time.
holy smoke!
uhh...yeah I have, but those days are long gone IMO. But I will conceed that 'never' was not the correct word.
Sarmad, I sold 7% of my long position at 24.50. Will I get a chance to buy it back lower? A little sellers remorse here, but I forget that Intel has never been a stock to runaway from us to the upside, but someday that may change.
