Doesn't this discussion beg the question 'are these names targeted at the consumer or the OEMs?'. Certainly 'Intel Inside' was a hugely successful consumer oriented marketing campaign, but that marketing campaign still exists today in roughly the same form. Furthermore I agree with your assessment that consumers are not technically savvy enough to differentiate Core Duo vs. Core 2 Duo vs. Core 3 or i7 which leads me to argue that these product naming strategies (as opposed to the platform names VPro, Centrino etc) are really geared toward OEMs who would 'get' that i7 is in another league from the Core 2 architecture.
