Sorry Colt, but I think that poll just plain sucks! ;)
Well, Happy B-Day ksquared! 39 again? <g>
Not to worry Colt. Chances are, none of us will be in New Orleans in Jan. ;)
Colt,
Penn State ruins tourney for Michigan
Not bad, but I'm looking forward to this headline:
Penn State upsets Wolverines - knocks Michigan from their #1 ranking
Course, I'll have to wait a few years for it to happen - right ksquared? <g>
Yeah Colt, I heard that first thing this morning when I turned on the news. Very sad indeed.
ksquared,
Certainly Notre Dame would be the prize but I agree with you - it ain't going to happen. Someone mentioned one time that all the Big ten members should refuse to play them. Maybe that would shock them into reality. Of course, there isn't a school out there that doesn't envy their position - "revenue envy" as it were.
Anyway, yes Pitt - Penn State goes back many, many years and the rivalry has always been very intense. I'd have to look-up the series #'s but it's actually fairly close. Penn State has dominated during the Paterno years but Pitt "was it" before that. They do not have a great fan base tho - they rarely fill the stadium (share Heinz Field with the Steelers now) and don't travel well. That could change but I question whether the Big Ten would want someone who wouldn't bring the added revenue that a Notre Dame or Syracuse would - both good TV draws. Yet, Pitt seems to be mentioned more than any other @ this point. Who knows? I'm still trying to figure out why Miami's in The Big East anyway. ;)
BTW, forget the PSU a-holes from Manhattan - you're going to find individuals like that @ every school. Sometimes I think arrogance 101 must have been added to the curriculums @ all the schools since I attended and yes, I can be just as guilty as the next person. Of course, this medium could add to that. <g>
Mornin' ksquared,
Word had it on Thursday that Paterno was pushing to bring Pitt into the Big Ten plus Two.
Yes, I've heard that rumor too. They would not be my first choice but I'm a bit of a realist - whatever happens, happens. I do want to see the 12th team added tho. The conference championship game is the 1st step towards a true NC series for college football & it is needed.
Besides, I'm not against change as long as it doesn't change my life. ;)
Enjoy the wet holiday weekend!
I did a quick search:
http://doc.weblogs.com/2001/11/27
On one of the beds a late '50s vintage Hitachi 8-transistor portable radio was playing "Blue on Blue," by Bobby Vinton. The song ended and on came Charlie Greer and the WABC jingle, followed by one of his surreal pitches for "Dennison's, a men's clothier, Route 22, Union, New Jersey, open 10am to 5 the next morning. We've got shirts with fronts and backs and buttons to match. You've got the time, we've got the threads. Just come on down. Money talks, nobody walks..."
Interesting - I remembered it from listening to "Cousin Brucie" on WABC with my transistor radio plugged into my ear. I must have been very, very young @ the time. ;)
BTW, I also saw that "Barney's" used the same slogan @ one time.
Mornin' ksquared,
There's a rumor circulating that Miami will soon bolt from The Big East conference to the ACC & take @ least 2 more teams with them - giving the ACC 12 teams & 2 divisions & the all important conference championship game. If this happens, I suspect The Big Ten to jump on the chance to add the 12th team too. There's just too much money @ stake with these championship games & the conference will move quickly - maybe one of the remnants of The Big East.
I know you're a traditionalist but get ready - it will happen. "Money talks, & no one walks - Dennison's, Rt 2, Union, New Jersey!" LOL! 'Member that one?
Hope you're enjoying this nice Spring weather.
WHB et al,
If you've truly filed a suit, what jurisdiction? Where could one obtain a copy? I do think you're after the wrong fish tho - the great white whale is in Monsey, N.Y., not on Wall Street, IMO.
BTW, where the heck you come up with some of those numbers, I'll never understand!
.....and before I forget - nice to see some new "faces" around here. Ksquared & Colt & I were getting pretty lonely over here. <g>
Welcome everyone!
Lookin' good there, Colt! Hope your guys make it to the F4. I see the Lady Lions took it on the chin to Tennessee this afternoon so I have no one else to root for.
BTW, I got my ticket application yesterday for football tickets & plan on attending the Spring game next month - too early to be talking about this? LOL!
Best of luck!
ksquared,
Dang I am out of the popular culture loop.
As Martha would say, "that's a good thing". <g>
ksquared,
Everyone's favorite insider trader - Ms. Stewart. <g>
Colt,
As Martha would say, "that's a good thing". :)
ksquared,
Agree on the TV thing - 60+ channels & I can never find anything to watch. Remember when we had a choice of 3 & were completely satisfied? That is "reality T.V." IMO!
No commercial is more obnoxious than the Verizon "can you hear me now?" thing. Drives me nuts! <g> Of course, here I am talking about it so I guess it's effective. :(
Colt,
At least you have cheerleaders - Mr. Rooney feels they distract from the game. Well, Duh! LOL!
ksquared,
What, no mud wrestling? <g>
BTW, Did you notice PSU lost to Michigan? Now there's a shock! LOL! They did have a nice upset of Indiana last week tho, for their 2nd Big Ten win of the season. Whoops, the season's over now. <g>
Colt,
Many of the women's games are better than the mens games. Much more emotion and a whole lot LESS Hot Dogging. <g>
There's a joke in there somewhere. ;)
Congrats to Villanova!

Bob,
I think what's more important is the fact that this is the 1st time the SEC has indicated it's awareness of the scam involving "toxic" convertible debentures. I find this very encouraging. How many of these scam company officers are actually benefiting from these deals? I'm sure I'm not the only one convinced that they are shorting right along with the holders - offshore, of course. They issue them solely for that purpose, IMO.
Everyone reading this board knows the name Nussen - he's raped 3 public companies that I'm aware and is probably involved in others with CD's too. He's the King. Hopefully, the SEC is watching - no, hopefully they are already investigating. He deserves jail time, IMO.
Colt,
That would be neat if somehow they slipped in and got a bid.
Yep, and then I woke up. <g>
Hey, PSU won their 1st conference game - one step closer to "the final four"! LOL!
http://www.gopsusports.com/BasketballM/pressrelease/pressrelease.cfm?anncid=3988
Celebrate, celebrate
dance to the music! <g>
Guilty. <g>
ksquared,
Maybe they'll rename the school Paterno State University... <ggg>
That will depend on whether there's a Dem. or Rep. Governor @ the time and that could be 3 or 4 more elections if he keeps moving back his retirement. <g>
BTW, I have something better than a snow blower - I have a brother-in-law with a snow blower who lives across the street and thinks it's fun to use. LOL!
ksquared predicted he wouldn't quit until he got another crack at the Wolverines.
He also won't quit until he thinks his son is ready to take over - remember where you heard that first! <g>
BTW, they underestimated the 6" here overnight. It's amazing how pretty the snow can be but you put millions of flakes together and it screws up an entire region of the country.
Picked a good year to buy my 1st 4WD. <g>
I can't wait to see the two biggest Ego's in the NFL go at each other next season. I'd say by Game 5, they will be clashing.
Yep, it should get interesting down there. Of course, they have to compete with the biggest ego of all and he's down there also - How's Bobby doing @ Texas Tech these days? Has he thrown any chairs on the court lately? LOL!
They say everything is bigger in Texas, I guess that includes egos, eh? ;)
Hey ksquared,
I really don't follow the BB team much - in fact, I didn't realize that they hadn't even won a conference game yet until Colt gave me the incentive to look. Oh well!
Snow? Yeah, it started here about mid-day. We seem to be right on the fringe of the big stuff tho - 3 to 6 tonight, 2 to 4 tomorrow and maybe another couple tomorrow night. Directly SE thru the mountains could get up to 3 feet from what I've heard. That would be just South of State College. They will probably be nailed too. My sidewalk is a lost cause - I gave up on it early on. <g>
Stay warm and get a snowblower. ;)
Looks like your guys are having a great year, Colt. I hope it continues for ya. BTW,

ksquared,
That list didn't format well - actually, it's a ranking of football recruiting for next year. An indication of how well future teams will be. The individual's name is supposedly the top recruit from each school listed. Yes, there were 6 Big Ten schools in the group - PSU not being 1 of them. I've been told, however, that we didn't have very many scholarships to offer this year. The NCAA only allows around 80(?) over a 4 year period so we must have used up most of our quota the last few years.
Still, it's not reassuring to me. Hopefully, the sophs & jrs. will make up for the small freshman class. One thing's for sure, at least we won't lose to the Wolverines next year! LOL!
Recruiting rankings as we approach "signing day". Is it just me or is someone conspicuous by their absence? Yikes!

Mornin' Colt,
Thank you for the honor! Please don't expect me to contribute too much on the BB thing tho - not really much to discuss if you're a Nit. <g>
Did you really have to list the Big Ten standings? LOL! One of these years ..........
Thanks again.
Mornin' ksquared,
I hadn't noticed - thanks for the heads-up! I'm glad he had the good sense to list you 1st. <g>
BTW, wasn't it you who was wishing for a nice cold winter? Did you have to make it the "brass monkey" variety? ;)
Take care & stay warm!
Congrats to the Longhorns too, Colt!
Guess I'll have to concentrate on the Steelers for a few days until they bite the bullet too. :(
BTW, thanks for starting the thread this year - it's been a lot of fun & you people have been really great to chat with.
ksquared,
And now they are 4-1...
Ouch! <g> I figured they were in trouble when they didn't capitalize early on when they had the opportunities. I was glad to see Robinson in there - it's going to be a good competition for starting QB next year. Under the circumstances, I think Joe did the right thing putting Mills back in there when he did tho. He's done well under pressure in the past & Robinson hasn't really had the experience. Still a good year.
Congrats on your win - at least the worst the conference can do is 4-3 which is still pretty good. UM should move back into the top 10.
Looking forward to Fall of '03 already!
I'm trying to figure out what to do today - anyone know if there are any football games on the tube in the next 15 hours? LOL!
Best of luck to everyone! BTW, The Big Ten is 3-0 @ this point! :)
Colt,
Penn State and Joe Paterno maintained its clean-cut image and went on to stun the Hurricanes, 14-10, as Pete Giftopoulos intercepted a pass from Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde to seal the win.
Oh yes, I remember it well - I attended the '83 Sugar Bowl when we won our 1st NC vs. Ga. but missed that one in Tempe. We decided not to go because we were afraid we were going to lose. <g> I'm not name dropping here because I really don't know him personally but Pete Gioftopoulos is a good friend of one of the members of our tailgate & frequently stops by. I must admit that I flashback to that intercept every time I see him. One other thing I remember about that game was the telecast - NBC decided to try something different and did not have mics around the stadium to pick up the crowd noise. They figured the game was big enough that it didn't need the hype. It was strange. It was like the crowd wasn't there. I don't think they've done that since & that's a good thing. <g>
Good luck tomorrow in the Cotton bowl!
Mornin' ksquared,
I did stay up for the end of that game and I'm glad I did. It was a great game to watch. Not only were they able to tie it on a 4th & long with seconds left but to win it in OT just seemed fitting for a Big Ten team this year. Some of the best games this year were OT games (of course, for some of us OT is NOT a good thing!). LOL!
Good luck on Wed. - here's hoping for a Big Ten clean sweep!!!!
BTW, you aren't completely shameless - you could have grubbed the "1001" post too! ;)
Up to a foot of snow in the next 24 hrs.! Looks like Santa won't have any trouble getting around here. <g>
A belated Happy Birthday to Colt & Happy Holidays to All!!!!!
GOSANTA!!!
alexed,
I appreciate what you're saying - I think, overall, they had an excellent group of athletes. However, the bottom line is they failed on 3 occasions. I accept that, I have too. And considering the 2 previous years, things improved greatly. The key now will be whether they can build going forward - recruiting will be key. All these awards for LJ will help in that regard.
BTW, I think all us Nits have been somewhat spoiled over the last 35 years under Paterno and the truth is you can't always play for the NC. I just hope we remain competitive.
Gary
