OT: I bit the bullet on SATC and averaged up @3.59. So far, so good. COVD looking good today. Of course almost everything is looking good today.
Bootz
Averaged up on SATC @3.59. News out today. In COVD from 3.95.

ljk, roni, when I said it was an ugly day, I was referring to the market as a whole. There will always be isolated stocks and sectors that do good even on a generally down day. I've already acknowledged that with a reference of my own to the performance of the Chinese Portals today.
I'm personally having an OK day, too, despite the overall red. That doesn't mean it isn't an ugly day in the market in general.
As far as my "outsiders" are going, COVD seems to be holding six (in at $3.95), and SATC is up more than 7% (in at $2.24). I averaged up on the latter @ 3.59.
Good trading to all!

SATC doing nicely today. Up 6.5%.

ljk, have you never heard of the joint Gillette/MS venture? Turn your mouse up to High and the laser beam actually shaves your leg.
Two birds with one stone, as it were.

Yes, good, and yes. (And yes, I tried it on a bare leg.)

ljk, there's a base station that both the keyboard and mouse use wirelessly. The base station connects to the PC with a single USB (or PS/2) cable.
Bootz
cotton, locally, it was during a two-day special (Sept. 5 & 6). Involved an instant rebate and two mail-in rebates.
If the big deal isn't on in your neighborhood, I still wouldn't be surprised to see it for less than the $89.99 retail.
The edition I got (MS has six new ones out) is the Wireless Optical Desktop Special Edition.
The one drawback is the usual MS doofus: the base station has a split cable with a USB and PS/2 connection.
Bootz
I'm using one of the new MS wireless scroll-wheel mice right now. Curiously, neither it nor the MS wireless keyboard I got at the same time have an on/off switch. Since MS claims better battery life for both, I'm assuming that when the PC goes to sleep, so do they.
$89.99 retail the pair, but I got them at CompUSA on special for $29.99. Couldn't pass them up. Mac compatible, too.
The scroll wheel is the new one -- scrolls horizontally as well as vertically. Oh, yeah, and it has two buttons.
Apple's new wireless keyboard and mouse are $69.95 each, if memory serves. Shows you what kind of economy of scale (or pricing arrogance) Apple is up against.

Bare Feats benchmarks the new PBs:
(Excerpt)
ANALYSIS
The new 15" (and 17") Aluminum PowerBooks don't seem to suffer from the missing level 3 cache. The larger on-chip level 2 cache seems to take care of business. The bumped up clock speed and Radeon 9600 graphics translate into better performance. Apple's going to sell a "oodles" of these!
I threw in the Cetrino 1.3GHz numbers for a reality check. As you can see, it's faster in some ways and slower in others. But the newest PowerBooks are too cool for the competition. Game over.
We haven't tested the optional Hitachi 5K80 5400rpm 80GB drive yet but we will soon. I did run Xbench 1.1.1 drive test on the stock Fujitsu 4200rpm 80GB as well as a Hitachi 7K60 7200rpm 60GB Travelstar in a Wiebetech FireWire 800 notebook case. With sustained read/write of 40MB/s, the 7K60 blows the stock drive away (26MB/s). And don't say it was FireWire 800 that did it. I got the same numbers when I had the 7K60 inside a TiBook 800.
If I was buying a new PowerBook today, I'd get the stock 4K80 drive, replace with with a 7K60 from TransIntl.com, and use the 4K80 has an external portable FireWire drive.

cotton, you know what they say: everybody's a genius in a bull market. I'm just playing it for what it's worth.
Right now, it seems to be running on sentiment and perception, as opposed, say, to little things like, uh, fundamentals.
Can't fight momentum. I agonized over getting out of both CYMI and SINA and shorting them instead. Glad I didn't, needless to say.
Unfortunately, AAPL just doesn't enter the picture right now, for me, anyway. Just too many other stocks out there offering better returns.
Check out NGEN. Poor man's NANO?

An OS X question I've yet to see addressed anywhere: OK, so you buys your new 15" PB today and it arrives next week.
Presumably, future upgrades of OS X will be aimed at making it more and more 64-bit G5 compatible.
So where does that leave the status of future OS upgrades for the 32-bit G4, ie, that new PB you just bought?
Will Apple have to go forward with two versions of OS X, one optimized for the G4 and one that runs on the G5?
Sounds like a potential mess (or a quick road to obsolesence) for that new PB to me.
Or is it possible to continue developing and upgrading an OS X that will run on both chips?
Anyone got any thoughts?
