DJ Lehman Ups Apple; Cites Back-To-School, PowerMac Cycle
By Donna Fuscaldo Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Thanks to a "solid" back-to-school selling season and the potential of the G5 PowerMac's upgrade cycle, Lehman Brothers analyst Daniel Niles raised his investment rating on Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) Monday.
In a research report, the analyst said that, in addition to a potentially "solid" upgrade cycle for the computer maker's G5 computer systems, Apple is "best positioned in music with its end-to-end offering of MusicStore, iTunes and iPod."
Niles, who raised his investment rating on Apple to overweight from equal weight, noted the company's earnings have "significant leverage."
Recently shares of Apple were trading up 3%, or 65 cents, to $21.34, on volume of 1.2 million shares. Average daily volume is 4.1 million.
Niles doesn't own shares of Apple, but Lehman does have an investment banking relationship with the company.

WLD, no attitude. What's with the question? Go back and review your original post.
You seemed to be questioning how I could have made a profit on SINA by selling on a down day.
The answer, as I said, is simple: I was up more than I was down when I cashed out.
Again, any more questions?
No Attitude Bootz
WLD, yes, you are reading that right. My profit cushion in SINA was larger than today's decline. Did you think I just bought it this morning?
Plus, I didn't sell at the day's low.
To review: SINA was down today, but I sold and still made a profit. How can such wonders be?
Any more questions?

Linda, at this exact moment, I'm still in SINA. But I'm being sorely tested. Almost every stock I own is getting hammered today.
Unfortunately, it's a Bad Ratio Day (BRD). The more I own of a stock, the more it's being hammered.
Historically, September is supposed to be a really miserable month. This one started out good, but is apparently trying to make up for it in a hurry.

China's Portal Websites Facing Uncertain Future
BEIJING, Sep 26, 2003 (SinoCast China IT Watch via COMTEX) --
The share prices of China's portal websites listed in the US NASDAQ, namely, Sohu.com, Sina.com and Netease, com, have sharply risen over the past year. However, these portal websites are facing an uncertain future.
In fact, some arbitragers have been borrowing the shares of these portal websites, in the hope of obtaining a big profit when the share prices of these portal websites fall abruptly. Meanwhile, Sohu.com's senior officials, including its founders and CEO, have also sold out the Sohu.com shares they held. Moreover, these portal websites forecast that the increases in their third-quarter operating revenues will slow down.
All these signs are repeating that China's portal websites are facing many uncertainties. Maybe, the chief reason for these uncertainties comes from their single profitable business, namely, the short messaging service (SMS), which has played a big role in dragging them out of the red. These portal websites send short messages, such as jokes, news and other contents, to mobile phone users and charge service fees. The SMS service fees have a 50% share in the total revenues of these portal websites, indicating that these portal websites heavily depend on the SMS in obtaining profits. The SMS itself is a low-cost but high- profit operation.
Therefore, these portal websites are facing another issue, namely, they will have to establish and maintain good relations with China Unicom, and China Mobile, the mobile telecom carriers in China.
If these portal websites want to maintain their present rapid growth and higher share prices, they will have to diversify their businesses apart from the SMS. Several businesses, such as paid email box service, paid search, advertisements and cyber games, will be decisive to these portal websites' future growth.
MDB Capital Group's equity analyst in San Francisco points out that he favors Sina.com. Sina.com holds a 40% share in China's Internet advertisement market, and has developed a large number of top multinational corporations. The analyst reveals that Sina.com is now making an investment in the high-end cyber game developing technologies in order to surpass Netease.com, which is a leader in the cyber game market. However, the only move Sina.com has taken is just to establish a joint venture with NCSoft, a South Korean cyber game developer.
At present, China's two mobile telecom operators charge serial service fees on mobile phone users on behalf of these portal websites. These portal websites will, in return, distribute a proportion, typically 15%, of the service fees to the mobile telecom carriers. The service fees mobile telecom operators charge on its mobile phone users also include web- based email service and movie browsing fees, which are not associated with mobile phone services at all.
This summer, mobile telecom operators decided to suspend charging fees that are not associated with mobile phone services. The relevant departments will carry out a three-month evaluation so as to prevent third-party websites from providing erotic contents for mobile phone users via these portal websites. However, the suspension has imposed a negative influence on the normal service fees of these portal websites.
Fortunately, the evaluation will shortly terminate. Insiders reveal that China Mobile is trying to establish cooperation with banks to put in use an independent billing system for services other than mobile phone services.
However, they are most likely to ask for a higher distribution proportion.
Sohu.com contends that the uncertainty in the mobile phone carriers will not influence its performance because it does not provide non-mobile phone services that require mobile telecom operators' billing system. Besides, the outlooks for its SMS and MMS (multi-media messaging service) businesses are optimistic.
Sina.com refuses to comment in terms of its share price and prospect. Meanwhile, Netease.com's spokesperson stressed that Netease.com has attracted investors with the business diversification and the basic balance between major paid services.
Some analysts point out that the share prices of these portal websites are so high that they are prone to generate a bubble-economy question. Besides, it is only a problem of time that more SMS providers will pour into the market and the mobile telecom operators will ask for higher service fee distribution proportions.

G5 supercomputer cluster considered a bargain
September 25 - 10:30 EDT Virginia Tech told MacMinute this week that its new supercomputer cluster, which uses 1,100 Power Mac G5s, is a relative bargain compared to alternatives (such as Linux machines) and one-tenth the cost of an average supercomputer. Lynn Nystrom of Virginia Tech's College of Engineering said that the total cost of the cluster is US$5.2 million, financed over five years. "At $1 million a year, and knowing that the College of Engineering brought in over $100 million in research money last year, we consider this an investment that will attract big science research money and increase our overall research expenditures significantly," she told MacMinute. Virginia Tech fired up parts of the cluster for the first time on Wednesday to get it ready for inclusion in the Top500 project's new list of the world's fastest supercomputers -- a list that currently has no Macs. Nystrom said volunteers started assembling the cluster in August and "have been working 24/7" since then in order to have it ready for the list's October 1 deadline. She confirmed that the university will indeed have its numbers in by the deadline.

zanny, fewer iPods sold = mucho effect on Apple. It's one of their high-margin items. Or was.
Wake up. Dell could've sold a zillion. Now they won't need to sell a single one, as in no more Dell ads for the iPod.
Exactly what about the situation don't you understand?
Each and every Dell "pod" sold or bundled away is a lost sale for Apple.
Unless you're suggesting that iTunes for Windows will only work on an iPod?
I didn't think so.
Bootz
You people are way too...complacent, if not stupid in the bargain. Dell could've been a major, major
retailer of the iPod, especially what with iTunes for Windows on the way, but Apple fumbled it. (Again?)
Instead, they'll now be offering their own alternative music player under the Dell brand name. And the PC scale of economy means they can give those puppies away with the purchase of a Dell computer, and/or as a small add on. (I predict both.)
The largest computer seller in the world will no longer need to sell a single iPod...and some of you think this won't affect Apple at all?
What kind of dreamworld are you living in?
All you can say is that the Dell model won't match the iPod's ease of use or elegance. As if Jane and Joe Blow gave a damn!

StreetInsider Alert for AAPL
Sep 24, 2003 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --
Apple Computer (Nasdaq: AAPL) is seeing pressure today on rumors Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) may introduce a product that will compete directly with Apple's popular iPod digital music device.

A wireless iPod to defeat piracy?
September 24 - 07:42 EDT In his "Byte of the Apple" column for BusinessWeek today, Charles Haddad wonders what would happen if iPods went wireless. "Riddle me this: What would you get if you crossed a BlackBerry with an iPod? The answer: The future of the music business," writes Haddad. The concept behind this is called Everywhere Internet Audio (EIA), and it would allow an iPod to become a "wireless digital ladle," providing the user with a constant stream of digital music without the need for a storage device. Haddad also notes, "It's an ill-kept secret that Apple is trying to figure out how to add wireless Internet connectivity to the iPod."

Stillwater, Minn. students, teachers to get iBooks
September 23 - 13:16 EDT Minnesota's Stillwater board of education has approved a plan to give every junior high student in the district an iBook to use at home and school, "despite requests from dozens of angry parents to delay the decision," reports the Pioneer Press. On Monday, the board approved a five-year, US$2.85 million lease agreement with Apple to provide the laptops. The iBooks will go to about 2,270 students and 135 staff members at Oak-Land and Stillwater junior high schools by next fall.

Mac OS 9 usage dwarfs OS X in creative fields
September 22 - 16:04 EDT Following our report earlier today on Apple's market share numbers in the creative industry, Vincent Naselli, a director at research firm TrendWatch, provided MacMinute with a further break down of the numbers. According to the firm, 71 percent of professional graphic designers use Mac OS 9 as their principal Mac operating system, while 17 percent have OS X. For corporate designers, 60 percent use OS 9 and 13 percent use OS X. For professional ad agencies, 72 percent have OS 9 and 20 percent run OS X. The figures provided were the latest data available through June 2003. Since then, Quark has released an OS X version of QuarkXPress, which should have increased the operating system's usage in the industries.
