Time horizon and the amount you have to invest are key. If you have less than $100,000 to invest then a muni bond fund would be better than individual bonds. Like Joe, I am not a big fan of the muni bond funds - there is lack of control over when you take a loss or gain, and you can lose money on them (unlike a CD). If you can do individual bonds then you might consider laddering the maturity. Also, to make the bonds tax free in your home state you should try to stick with bonds issued from your state's municipalities (while staying clear of private activity bonds if you need to avoid AMT add backs as another poster astutely mentioned).
As far as the problem with the insurers of muni debt - some issues really don't need the guarantee of the insurers, but you need a savvy bond person to know the issues.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Loved the slide show, cy. Thanks. I don't feel any compulsion to sell my few shares that I have owned since Aug 06. Maybe a mistake but I've got almost 30 pts to the good. I don't remember if your or Pantera's postings got me into that one. THANKS GUYS!!
I tried to cover one of my shorts on RIMM this am and had a limit price in from last night. The stock traded .40 below my limit and I wasn't covered so I called Schwab. I was never aware of "trade the exception" rule where a broker matches the buys and sells in house and then only takes the shares that are the top bid and ask. The broker isn't shown nor the total amount of shares traded. At least that is what the guy told me at Schwab. Another form of legalized stealing.
Wow, Joe, you weren't kidding on BTU.
I will be interested to read the article referenced, but what I was thinking of when I posted was that if there is a problem with a merchant (such as returns or travel-type stuff and the vendor or carrier goes belly-up) then if you use a credit card you have more recourse.
Plus there are those rewards too!
Joe, maybe AD will chime in on if debit cards get rewards. I don't have a debit card so I don't know for sure. It might depend on the bank that issues the card.
Nice to see business is doing well at your store!
I wouldn't buy anything with a debit card (and I don't have one). You get much better protection with a credit card. Just pay off the bill when you get it.
I wish I could have shorted PNRA. No shares available at Etrade or Schwab. I hate to buy puts.....
Rio sounds lovely and I would love to visit there someday. From what I have heard, leave your valuables in your backyard in the States, especially if you are hanging out on the beach.
'Cause you're older and wiser.
I'm just being a little snot, Newly, and fooling with ya!
I probably got the K-1 about a month prior to the 1040 due date, so I guess it was "early". However, since it was a surprise to me, I considered it late since I got everything else (even corrected 1099s) so much earlier.
Thanks for 'splaining.
It's a continuing nightmare for some of us, Pantera. Especially people like me that do the extension thingy. And then there are estimated taxes..... it just never ends.
Hey Newly, if you get that VAT idea passed let me know. There are a couple of things I want to buy first. LOL. By the way, I don't trust them that it would eliminate income tax either. So it would just be another tax.
I understand, Newly, that K-1s are typically sent out late. As far as your accountant goes, I would have fired him too! If it makes you feel better, my accountant hasn't gotten to my taxes either. In his defense, I only sent him the stuff a week before the due date. I know he is totally backed up as his operation was understaffed this year. Just as well, as I only found the K-1 this past Thursday. Gee, I wonder if he will send my return to India for processing. LOL. He actually had that in the engagement letter.
Hopefully your new guy will get it done before you hit the road.
So with a short in UNG, I wonder what happens to the K-1? That was a shocker for me putting together stuff for last years taxes. I almost threw it out as it was stuck with the prospectuses and it came late. I wonder how much my short term hold will cost me in accounting fees to account for that. LOL.
I believe he mentioned that he has visitors in town and would be away for a bit.
Well waiting didn't work in my favor on DVN. Just didn't want to jump in as I hadn't really been paying attention to it. It was an excellent place to write the calls though. Thanks again for mentioning.
Well, DECK didn't get to my price but I didn't want profits to evaporate so I closed out the position. Maybe I'll get a another chance later to re-short.
AD, DECK has earnings coming up on Thursday if I remember correctly. I currently have a short on it and will close it out if it gets to my price. COH beat earnings yesterday and still went down. It looks like the market is beginning to show some strength here though, so DECK might not fare as poorly.
That's very kind of you to let me know. I like the idea, it looks stretched to me too, but I am on the fence about what to do. With some luck I might have an opportunity tomorrow.
Yeah, Cy, on that one it is. Amazing!! And I'm happy for you too! ;)
Guz, just so you know, I didn't follow you into CROX. I jumped in prior to your postings. (Wasn't sure if you were sorry that you got into CROX or that you thought I was enticed by your postings to jump in. In either case it was my responsibility. ) I still have mine. Haven't decided what to do yet. Probably taking my lumps would be a good thing but I also see it as the horse has left the barn.
Good for her! I would need about 2 days and 48 sec.
I see UNH has earnings tomorrow morning. I got out near the time you did a while back. Its a good thing we did. I wonder if it might come up a bit but I'm staying away. The croc bit me too. :(
Zeev wasn't trading HAUP. It was a long-term hold.
I agree with Euterpe, ISRG is best shorted after their typical earnings pop.
Joe, you make a good argument, but this company seems to be still hitting on all cylinders. Not a snorter I'd take on at this point. That said, there is a decent chance you are right(and what a home run that would be). If you are wrong, you just need to be patient and I think the price will come back to you.
I see your point.
On another topic, how much longer do we get to enjoy your company? Aren't you hitting the road in a couple of weeks? I hope you can still post a bit while out there. It would be sad to lose another fine poster.
"be courteous"
Yeah, you would think people would know that without having to say. That said, I like that some are worried that others might be taken to the cleaners by unscrupulous posters doing the pump thing. So I think of it as a public service when they point it out.
Changing the ibox to exclude BB stocks would be a change for the thread. Since Tuna likes to post here too, I would think it would be best to keep it the same.
To my knowledge, there was never any policy against BB stocks on this thread. In fact Tuna would post some plays here that he couldn't put on Ico's board.
Personally I don't have a problem with BB stocks (I just stay away) but I do have a problem with pump and dump artists.
I've seem Rawnoc post occassionaly here before. I have no idea on what though.
Maybe I should have addressed this post to Lee. Oh well.
Yeah, I can see Maine voting for choad many times over. LOL.
Lee and Bruce are willing to take on the job and would be fine candidates. It is not to say that the others would not be good either. I see it as a win-win for all of us in the patch.
Thanks Gtober, that is a great idea.
Even when Zeev was here there would be some folks who had no self-control on the politics.
Solars are hanging tough in this sell-off.
Glad to hear that it is BS. Joe seems to think so too after checking the financials.
I caught the news yesterday on those MD-80s. I thought that was done already, but apparently not yet finished.
Yeah, I don't like to talk much about SNDK either. Oy!
Pantera, just read this on ico's board about AMR rumor

Well said and so true. Your statement also reminds me of the often quoted: "We've seen the enemy and it is us" (or something like that).
Beautiful Joe! Glad someone I know is capitalizing on this outrageous run. I was chicken.
Yes, Guz. Fun, isn't it? :)
Thanks Cy, I couldn't remember the name of the "spinner". I see BTU is up nicely too, which is nice considering i still own some.
It wasn't long ago that I learned my grandfather was a coal miner in PA as a young man (not long after he came to this country from the Ukraine.) So I guess it is good that I have some coal stocks to profit from.
$9 x 20 (shares) LOL. But like I said, its like free money!
Nice quick cash from CCJ!
I found it interesting that Lehman reiterated their underweight of FTO and reduced the target price to $25 from $29 (I think - my brain already is unsure.)
Also, anyone see the big rise in PCX? It was given an outperform rating from Friedman Billings. I know nothing about this stock, only that I got some as a result of a spin off (Can't remember from where.) I keep it around as it kind of looks like free money to me. :)
It is because this web site was Zeev's creation that we should attempt to keep it going. Although Zeev isn't posting, we can continue on, using his example. To move to another thread increases the chance that we disperse and not practice what he taught us in both trading and how to treat one another. I find the thought of closing this thread depressing and like suffering another loss. Maybe it is the optimist in me, but I believe we can succeed in maintaining decorum (probably with the help of a couple of assistants). Our best chance of staying connected is by staying here.
Yup I own some CELG, some for quite a while now.
Humor? I guess I missed it. Unless you are talking about what a bunch of wild asses you all are. ;)
