Pier 1 -31.1% on FY15 warning; CFO retires
Pier 1's (NYSE:PIR) January comparable store sales rose 5.7% Y/Y, "well below " the company's expectations. Due to the shortfall, and "unplanned supply chain expenses," the company now expects FY15 (ends Feb. '15) EPS of $0.80-$0.83, below prior guidance of $0.95-$1.05 and a $1.00 consensus.
FY15 comparable sales guidance has been lowered to 5% from mid-to-high single digit growth, and gross margin guidance to 40.2% from 40.5%-41.5%. Year-end inventories are expected to be at $480M.
The company is now taking "a more cautious view" for February sales, and also states some of the unplanned supply chain expenses "will be ongoing" through the first quarter of FY16. Full FQ4 results arrive on April 8.
CFO Cary Turner is retiring. SVP of planning Laura Coffey will serve as interim CFO.
Shares have plunged to $11.70 AH.

Genworth swings to after-hours gain after detailing reserves
A volatile late session for Genworth Financial (NYSE:GNW), which has swung from heavy after-hours declines of -16% to turn positive, +3.7%, after its Q4 report.
All eyes were on the size of the hole in the company's long-term care reserves, and Genworth took an after-tax GAAP charge of $478M "related to the LTC active life margin review of its blocks acquired before 1996." Estimates varied widely for the difficult-to-calculate figure.
"I am disappointed by the continued challenges in our older LTC blocks and how it is overshadowing otherwise strong performance and momentum in other businesses," says CEO Tom McInerney.
Cushioning the reserves blow were results in U.S. mortgage insurance, up to $21M from a prior loss of $2M.

Cook: Apple planning $850M solar farm, Apple Pay outperforming
Tim Cook (NASDAQ:AAPL) states during a Goldman conference talk Apple is partnering with First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) on an $850M California solar farm. Apple is a week removed from announcing plans to invest $2B to build a Mesa, AZ global "command center" for its data center infrastructure that will run on renewable energy. (live blog, webcast)
Cook also states the Apple Pay rollout is "going faster than I thought it would, much faster." Apple has provided few details thus far about total Apple Pay transaction volumes.
He asserts once more Apple Watch (set to ship in April) will be a game-changing product, as debate continues to swirl about the size of its market opportunity. "The customizable nature of the Apple Watch is incredible."
Apple closed up 1.9%, making new highs and becoming the first U.S. company to post a $700B+ market cap along the way. First Solar closed up 4.8%, spiking in the final minutes of trading thanks to Cook's disclosure.
Update: First Solar has issued a PR about the solar project. It's located in Monterey County, and is expected to be finished by the end of 2016 after starting construction in mid-2015. Apple will receive 130MW of electricity through a 25-year power purchase agreement, and PG&E the other 150MW.
