IFE and auto infotainment gave Fred safe haven to seek in light of the brutal retail environment that everyone was facing this past year. This bodes well for both these two new markets as well as EDIG itself, as they both offer EDIG alternative markets that are not directly related to the individual consumer electronics markets but rather involve a more corporate approach.
However, the Odyssey 1000 is the most market ready product the company has and this is part of a growing market.
This is Fred's first priority, IMO, because it is what he has the most control over with the most immediate potential.
If you have a product as cool as the O-1000, a generation of kids growing up in the MP3 era, endless content, and OEMs recognizing this, there is no reason why more deals are not done. I can cut them slack due to recent economic conditions, but that is changing.
We shall see what this management team is made of in the days ahead.

arkie, there was zero marketing and the company was going through a major shift at the time when they should have been reaping the benefits of the holiday seasons.
A bad year. No one disputes that. And, many were waiting, hoping for the Odyssey 1000 to purchase for the holidays.
That being said, Fred is now center stage with his new plan, which has the DAP market being flanked by two even more exciting markets, IFE and auto infotainment.
Do we understand what it would mean in royalty payments if the microOS 3.0 is licensed and incorporated into auto factory installation ?
How about several airline carriers stocking their fleets with IFE products ? What about servicing those units on a monthly or quarterly basis ?
Then there are ipod numbers to massage...4 million in sales, primarily MAC users, at $500 a pop. How many thousands or million PC users will be looking for the next generation jukebox player at a better value ?
However, this is all short term banter, which bashers live for, since their perspective is minute to minute, making volume trades for miniscule amounts.
The focus is on the Odyssey 1000 becoming a marketable product into a growing market, followed by IFE and auto infotainment.
That is why investors are here, to participate in the development of these markets.
RP also stated their cash position was improving as well, from my recollections.
perhaps the "BUT" suggests EDIG follow sblu's path, since their retail experience in this market was so successful.
CDR, royalty payments are but one facet of the business model.
While royalty payments exist without any financial commitment from EDIG, they yield lower margins. The previous posts acts as if this is the only existing income generating scenario available to the company.
Etail sales of the Odyssey 1000 from the EDIG store carry a much higher margin. It will be this market to watch to see how successful this new sales approach will be.
And ofcourse, there are those bundling deals still on the table which offer further potential...all around the DAP products.
Then, as you point out, this DAP market is but one of three markets being mined by e.Digital to date.
Online Spending Forecast: $14.8B in Q1
By Beth Cox
The latest Internet Confidence Index report finds that consumers are slightly less sanguine than a year ago, thanks to the dismal economy, but still projects that U.S. consumers will spend $14.8 billion online in the first quarter of 2003.
The index, put together by portal company Yahoo! (Quote, Company Info) and market research firm ACNielsen, is a quarterly study designed to measure confidence levels in Internet products and services.
Now in its second year of analysis, the just-released fourth quarter 2002 results indicate a confidence level of 111 versus 115 for the same period last year. But the analysts who wrote the report said that the decline is most likely attributable to macro economic conditions.
That would more or less jibe with another recent report that found that despite horror stories about identity theft, account hijacking and assorted other rip-offs online, American consumers are more trusting than ever when conducting Internet transactions.
"The good news for the Internet community and e-tailers is that confidence levels remain relatively stable compared to other leading consumer related trends and indicators," said Manjima Khandelwal, vice president at ACNielsen International Research.
And the really good news from this report is that projections call for first-quarter 2003 online spending of $14.8 billion, compared to an estimated $14.6 billion in the year-ago period.
Interestingly, how one accesses the Internet seems to have a large impact on one's view of the experience.
Broadband consumers are significantly more confident than dial-up modem consumers, according to this report. Although Internet confidence declined marginally among broadband consumers in the fourth quarter of 2002, confidence within this segment continues to remain significantly higher, by 21 points, than consumers accessing the Internet at slow dial-up speeds. Clearly the World Wide Wait makes shoppers impatient and frustrated.
Even so, 56 percent of consumers polled said they intend to shop online in the first quarter this year.
"The fact that people are consuming more online and are becoming more sophisticated in their use of the Internet is demonstrating how intrinsic the Web is becoming to daily life, and how important it is for online businesses to deliver a quality experience," said P.K. Van Deloo, brand manager at Yahoo! Shopping.
The index score for the initial Yahoo!/ACNielsen Internet Confidence Index in June 2001 was set at 100 for use as a baseline. The sample size for the telephone survey is about 1,000 adults, who may or may not be currently utilizing the Internet.
RE: Wireless: Well, there you go.
Industry analysts predict the coming months will produce even more products to mine the PC's music treasure trove. Clearly, they say, an entire generation is addicted to the MP3 and other digital music formats.
"Overall," said Tribble of Streamwaves, "I think you'll see a wide consolidation of equipment with the entertainment center. Wireless, tuners, amplifiers and Internet connections are all going to come together in smaller and smaller units."

lickily,
I think the etail margins are much greater than 20%, perhaps close to double that, I am guessing.
What do you think EDIG's cost is on the O-1000 ?
Sentinel,
Possibly downloading content from the computer to your car or other devices wirelessly, perhaps. Transfering to handheld audio and video players or your car's video player...???
I would love to see phones included here but don't know about that....
arkie, if you want a quadruple from here then place your order first, not after...349 bucks for 20 gigs and voiceNav.
The greater the demand for product that is demonstrated, the sooner production ramps up and the sooner you see the quadruple you are requesting.
Just TOO Cool !

redwing, and this focused business model, with real products, moves forward on a balance sheet which has just seen its debt issues restructured and its overhead streamlined.
Moving forward, this company may just be embarking on its best year ever, a dramatic contrast to sblu, whose mounting debt burden hovers like a dark cloud above to the point whereby they are looking to possibly sell off all or part of the company. I wonder if their presence in retail will fall off this year.
EDIG's Odyssey 1000 may just become that STANDARD by which all other DAPs are judged, and will be the immediate next revenue boost for this company.
AND YOU ARE HERE !!!
I think the case was made that EDIG will be around for some time. EDIG management stepped up and indicated that they are coupling cost controlling measures with an increased revenue stream.
Products on all fronts, DAPs, IFE and auto infotainment are all moving forward and should see the light of day this calendar year, with the Odyssey 1000 bringing in revenues starting in 3 weeks.
Those global markets are still in the cross hairs and it is possible that all three fronts could kick in and ramp up this year. Fred indicated that the initial order of 4000 Eclipse units could likely increase with the efforts in pricing and marketing going on with Fujitsu-Ten.
I look forward to taking delivery of my Odyssey 1000 in the coming weeks. Should management find a way to drive traffic to the online store, via good press and positive reviews, among other means, these dramatically increased margins will help compensate for the early low volume stages of development.
AND, I am hopeful and confident that deals exist on the table that could leapfrog the current business model into the limelight.

Scheduled to start Thu, Jan 16, 2003, 4:30 pm Eastern
OT: RB has been reduced to Touretts syndrome style posting with a handful of bashers left...makes you wonder.
Has the state of day trading reached such a low point whereby EDIG's penny swing is their only hope for income, to the point whereby they spend their entire day posting nonsense and insults ? I wonder what that equates to as an hourly wage.
Amazed, though quite happy ihub offers an alternative for the discussion of EDIG.
Conference call at 1:30 PM EST---TODAY
BE THERE !
I came to ihub because it was a forum not focused on "personal" issues but rather on a discussion of the company, good due diligence and discussion about the products/markets etc., not unlike the early days at the Raging Bull.
Let's not turn this into a personal forum but rather one in which the company's business prospects are the center of discussion.
I applaud the design of this forum and its ability to filter out disruptive posts in order to maintain a rational discussion.
I'm all for freedom of speech, and I believe this forum allows for a rational discussion and for anyone to make their point, but it also has the ability to eliminate those whose sole purpose is to disrupt the discussion to further their ability to day trade, for the sake of day trading.
That element is not only counter productive to our investment but just a plain waste of time.
w_w, what, nothing better to do with your time ? Obviously ihub has allowed this thread to exist under the current conditions...with restrictions, whether you approve or not.
Your concept of utopia is pure chaos, which, of course, furthers your agenda.
Beyond this, responding to you is not what I consider quality time.
CDR, if a marketing door ever opened, it would be right now.
Steve Jobs would likely exploit it if the shoe were on the other foot. I wonder what Ted Waite is doing today ?
The iPOD shuffle...gotta love it. Good news for anyone who wants to capitalize on this engineering snafu.
packers1, it's like the death penalty...sometimes the innocent are wronged for the good of the majority.
I stated that some posts, whether justified or not, will be removed, at the sole discretion of the powers that be.
Engaging in this forum comes with that understanding.
No one is forcing anyone to be here and there are other boards for discussion available to all, especially if you want a free wheeling forum...
Personally, as it is right now, I prefer a few posts to be eliminated, whether I agree or not, for the good of forum.
When it gets intolerable, as RB got for me, I will use this forum less.
That's freedom of choice.
That is a rather sophomoric perspective. I would expect most to understand that start up projects need to reach a point before negative margins are eclipsed.
1999 had no products, just concepts for products. In 2003 EDIG has products in retail and etail globally, with plans for the next generation products to replace the legacy products...and more importantly, NEW markets yet untapped, with products designed and shown at CES, not to mention the huge potential with IFE.
You're so 2001-2002...lol
what's wrong, no audience for zachery miller left ?
In this early phase of production, top line should always outpace the bottom line...if things are to progress to the point that EDIG is growing its market....it takes some time before you reach critical mass and cross over to profitability.
packers1, this is a forum created by some EDIG investors for the discussion of the business of the company, for the most part, and as a direct alternative to the Raging Bull forum.
It took me a long while before ihub became my first choice as an EDIG forum. Having spent the "early" years on RB with mostly reasonable investors I really wanted it to remain what it once was. However, it has evolved into an irrational anti-EDIG forum where there is no continuity of discussion. I find no fake posts here, no fake news releases, no rude comments, all while I see some quite able to discuss their disappointments.
You are in their house, so you play by their rules.
Blackdog,
While I did not TOS bomba, this is ihub and not the raging bull. Without any discrimination by a "higher power" this will turn into the Raging Bull. So even though I may agree with you on this, it is worth seeing some sort of restraint applied to keep this thread civil.
RB is what it is and ihub is what it is. And we are all free to pick and choose knowing the rules in advance and while we discuss this, I see no reason for the constant discussion...lol.
PS, you owe me a glass of wine....next year's shareholders meeting.
revenue growth is irrelevant ??? lmao...oh my. It would depend on those growth projections and estimation for reduction in those negative margins, to the point of reaching profitability. Collier's projections were in the neighborhood of the mid $30 million range for top line revenue...that was his crossover point for his retail model.
This is not a dot com. They have, and will have more products for sale in multiple markets.
Maybe RP is speaking in the present tense, of which we will find more about tomorrow.
gernb1, I don't think that's it.
Basic content is loaded at the factory, or that is my understanding.
Now, additional content may be added for special reviewers etc...especially if their preferences are known in advance...but for the standard unit I think it comes preloaded from the factory.
FWIW
Duke,
you just stated what I was thinking, but with the "state of the union" as such, I thought I'd try to be as precise as possible.
sunpoop, I think most understood the point you were making.
When someone comes into a chatroom to discuss a company's prospects with unknown aliases, I think most do so with the basic understanding that each and every post is not researched to withstand the scrutiny of a court of law.
It's a chatroom for heaven sakes, and if someone takes the time to fly to Las Vegas, spend hours walking and talking, I think they are allowed a little leeway for poetic license when reporting their "perceptions".
Missing the big picture is epidemic on these threads lately.
I appreciate your efforts !
bomba,
when EDIG is receiving orders for 10K at a time all these issues should hopefully have been all sorted out...however, look at the Apple problem being reported. If that is true, whose fault is that, engineering or manufacturing ?
Shiit happens and EDIG has had its share of it, however, as the dust settles, the Odyssey 1000 is still standing tall after its CES2003 launch, in a crowd of worthy competitors.
From all reports it measures up in features and value.
Now it's time for OEMs to make their move if this reinvented business model is to take off.
Duke, not an accountant,
but as a small business owner I would think that the percentage of time that it is used in the business vs personal use would be what you are allowed to deduct.
thanks milplease for the clarification. I wonder if there have been any changes since that data was released.
