Notice of Selection Under U.S. Department of Energy Program to Capture About 60 Tons Per Day of CO2 While Simultaneously Producing Approximately 40,000 Kilowatt Hours Per Day of Ultra-Clean Electricity
Affordable and Scalable Fuel Cell Solution Captures CO2 While Producing a Revenue Stream From Electricity Generation
DANBURY, Conn., Sept. 01, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FuelCell Energy, Inc. (FCEL), a global leader in the design, manufacture, operation and service of ultra-clean, efficient and reliable fuel cell power plants, today announced the selection for negotiation of a $23.7 million cost share carbon capture project with the support of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy. Sponsored by the National Energy Technology Laboratory, the project is to install and operate a two-megawatt Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) system configured for carbon capture in addition to power generation. The carbon capture fuel cell system will be a modification of the Company’s commercial DFC3000® fuel cell power plant and will be installed next to an existing coal-fired power plant to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the exhaust of the coal plant. The Company expects to finalize the award with the DOE by the end of September 2015. The Company is evaluating multiple sites with interested utility and independent power producers that operate coal-fired power plants and expects to announce the site selection in the fall of 2015.

“Our affordable carbon capture solution solves coal-fired power plant emission challenges, enabling an incremental transition to cleaner power generation from coal,” said Chip Bottone, President and Chief Executive Officer, FuelCell Energy, Inc. “Our value proposition is attracting a lot of interest in the power industry and from legislators in states with a reliance on coal as we address a compliance obligation with a solution that provides a project return compared to conventional carbon capture approaches that incur only costs.”
The initial installation under this project represents the first of an expected two phase project at the selected site. The second phase, to follow this DOE project, would be to install eleven additional fuel cell power plants to capture approximately 700 tons/day of CO2 in total, while simultaneously generating about 648,000 kilowatt hours/day of ultra-clean power.
The carbon capture solution for this project routes the flue gas from a coal-fired power plant into the fuel cells air intake system. The CO2 is concentrated and captured within the fuel cells and approximately 70 percent of smog producing nitrogen oxide (NOX) is destroyed, supporting clean air initiatives, such as the U.S. Clean Power Plan. Following capture, the CO2 is cooled and compressed utilizing standard chilling equipment and is available for industrial or agricultural applications, enhanced oil recovery or sequestration. Unlike commercially available carbon capture technologies which significantly reduce the power output of the existing coal-fired power plant, DFC-based carbon capture is projected to provide additional clean power while separating carbon dioxide from the flue gas of the coal-fired power plant.
“Generating power while simultaneously capturing carbon emissions means that a coal-fired power plant operator or a project investor receives a return on capital, making this an affordable solution for ratepayers,” continued Mr. Bottone. “The power plant operator can adopt our solution incrementally, capturing greater amounts of carbon and reducing pollutant emissions over time, while increasing the overall power output of the facility.”
The multiple advantages of FuelCell Energy’s DFC carbon capture fuel cell solution include:
Utilizes a proven fuel cell power system owned by utilities on three continents
Scalable solution that can be added incrementally over time to capture greater amounts of CO2
Affordable to rate payers and provides the owner with a revenue stream from the sale of electricity generated by the fuel cell power plants
Extends life of coal-fired power plants with an easy-to-site solution that addresses emission challenges
FuelCell Energy has more than 50 sites operating globally with customers in nine countries. These fuel cell power plants utilize a fuel source such as natural gas or renewable biogas, combined with ambient air, to cleanly and efficiently generate power via an electrochemical reaction that virtually avoids the emission of pollutants. The fuel cell power plants configured for carbon capture will utilize natural gas as the fuel source and process the flue gas from the coal-fired power plant in the fuel cell air system, where CO2 will be transferred across the fuel cell membrane for concentration in the fuel exhaust stream during power generation. FuelCell Energy sells 5.6 megawatts of fuel cell modules to POSCO Energy for Asian market demand
Commencement of POSCO Energy fuel cell manufacturing on schedule for fall 2015 commercial production
Asian manufacturing volume supports additional cost reductions globally
DANBURY, Conn., Aug. 10, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FuelCell Energy, Inc. (FCEL), a global leader in the design, manufacture, operation and service of ultra-clean, efficient and reliable fuel cell power plants, announced the sale of 5.6 megawatts of fuel cell modules to South Korean partner POSCO Energy and provided a progress update on the local manufacturing of fuel cell components in South Korea for the Asian market. The fuel cell component manufacturing building in Pohang, South Korea is completed and is concluding pre-production testing with full production expected to begin in the fall of 2015. Raw materials have been ordered and delivered from the supply chain shared with FuelCell Energy. Increasing purchasing volumes will reduce the per-unit cost for both FuelCell Energy and POSCO Energy as the integrated global supply chain serves both companies.
“This second manufacturing site provides both flexibility of supply as well as redundancy of supply as capacity is added to support growth,” said Chip Bottone, President and CEO of FuelCell Energy. “This manufacturing initiative is a key aspect for supporting global adoption and driving production volume to reduce costs, and our utilization of one common fuel cell platform worldwide enables these initiatives.”
The global integrated supply chain of FuelCell Energy serves the new POSCO Energy manufacturing facility in South Korea in addition to the existing North American and European facilities. Production in Asia will lead to higher purchasing volumes, resulting in more favorable supplier pricing.
“A key aspect of our continued cost reductions is reducing the per-unit cost of raw materials and componentry, which is coming from higher production volumes,” said Tony Rauseo, Chief Operating Officer, FuelCell Energy, Inc. “Our two organizations are closely coordinating purchasing, and FuelCell Energy is placing combined volume purchase orders to ensure tight purchasing integration to drive down costs, and receiving compensation from POSCO Energy for procurement services rendered.”
The 5.6 megawatt sale is in addition to existing fuel cell kit sales under a previously announced multi-year contract, and will help meet growing fuel cell demand in Asia. The modules were delivered and FuelCell Energy recognized revenue from the 5.6 megawatt sale in the third fiscal quarter of 2015.
Multi-megawatt fuel cell parks solve power generation challenges for utilities as the combination of near-zero pollutants, modest land-use needs, and the quiet operating nature of fuel cell power plants facilitates their siting in urban locations. Fuel cell parks offer a multitude of advantages for utilities and neighboring communities, including:
Environmentally friendly power generation with virtually zero nitrogen oxide (NOx) that causes smog, sulfur dioxide (SOx) that contributes to acid rain, or particulate matter that aggravates asthma, and the power is delivered with a low carbon footprint
Distributed power generation places power near where it is used, enhancing the resiliency of the grid
Highly efficient power generation process that is economical
Continuous renewable power around the clock that is not reliant on weather or time of day
Rapid construction of a 59 megawatt fuel cell park, the world’s largest, constructed in only 14 months

FuelCell Energy Announces Project Development Agreement With E.ON Connecting Energies GmbH and First European Megawatt Stationary Fuel Cell Power Plant Sale in Europe
"Obesity cost the global economy 2 Trillion dollars...To put that into perspective, obesity's global cost is 54% higher than illiteracy, 43% more than alcoholism, and just an estimated $100 billion behind smoking and armed violence, war, and terrorism. As the report noted, obesity is now responsible for 5% of all deaths worldwide."
"Despite these concerns, the technology is certainly worth watching, and it could make a big difference those patients with BMIs of at least 40 to 45, or between 35 and 39 with at least one serious health-related condition."

Can This New FDA Approved Device Banish the Bulge?

Last month doctors at Tufts Medical Center in Boston completed the first commercial implant of a device that curbs hunger. The Maestro System, made by EnteroMedics (ETRM), works by delivering a nerve signal from the brain to the stomach that makes you feel full, also known as vBloc therapy.
Sajani Shah, MD, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgeon, at the Tufts Medical Center, who performed the first outpatient procedure, tells FOXBusiness.com it is an “added tool” in treating obesity when traditional diet and exercise aren’t cutting it. Mostly reserved for people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40, a 5’3” female with a BMI of 36 weighing about 215 lbs could be a potential candidate.
Similar to a pacemaker, the device works via the vagus nerve by sending a signal of fullness from the brain to the stomach helping patients “eat less and be full longer,” according to Shah who also stresses the procedure does “not violate any organs,” making it a less invasive option than a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy surgery. The device, which is on 13 hours of the day, can even be customized around sleeping and work schedules.
Along with Tufts, the University of Minnesota and the Scripps Health Center for Weight Management in San Diego also offer the therapy. EnteroMedics aims to have 30 centers certified by year-end but a spokesperson told FOXBusiness.com it is too early in the commercialization process to forecast the number of implants it expects to complete in 2015.
Should the procedure catch on, it would be a new innovation for the more than 78 million Americans battling the bulge. “We need to treat this [obesity] like the disease it is” said John Morton MD, President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Obesity can often lead to complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure and more serious ailments if not managed. Morton, who served as an FDA investigator during the clinical trials, hopes this “will attract people who may not seek care otherwise.”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Maestro earlier this year, the first clearance of a weight loss device in seven years as annual medical costs of obesity run about $147 billion, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
vBloc is not yet covered by insurance and Morton cautions that may take as long as two years because insurers are “notoriously slow to review coverage.” EnteroMedics did not disclose the cost of vBloc but said it is “competitively priced with other bariatric surgical options.” Those costs can run $10,000 to $30,000, according to the Bariactic Surgery Source.
Along with the cost, patients also face rigorous scrutiny before being accepted for the procedure. I “pick patients carefully” said Shah who expects them to have “accountability” when it comes to their lifestyle before and after.
In the first quarter, EnteroMedics posted a net loss of $7.2 million or $0.10 per share.
