Okay, three immediately came to mind. One, I can't find hide nor hair of anywhere... strange. It was a wonderful movie I could SWEAR was called Roundabout, Australian, made in 70's perhaps? I see a few Roundabouts but not this one. It's about a guy who leaves his kids in the Outback (this is all from foggy memory from perhaps ten years ago so I could be off somehow, but I really loved it). He walks them away from his car and they look back to see him commit suicide by blowing up his car or setting it on fire, leaving them to fend for themselves. They meet an aborigine who befriends them and the journey is marvelous. Don't want to say anymore just incase it shows up somewhere or I have the name wrong or something.
But here are two that ARE available, apparently:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0140888/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095305/
My ten, possibly eleven year old neighbor came over to hang out one night while I was watching the first one, Central Station. She kept burping in my ear and batting her eyelashes against my ear to distract me. She squirmed, huffed and puffed but finally gave up and actually got totally absorbed. She said at the end, "I don't know why but I like sad movies better than happy ones. I really loved it. I didn't think I would at first." It was pretty long, too. I think you will like it.
The second one is Judy Davis at her best. I'll leave it at this before I outdo myself for most drawn out post.
There are plenty others but these came to mind immediately.
P.S. 4.5 out of 5 pickles for each.
Hey, you've made me aware of plenty of movies I otherwise wouldn't have known about. You're very welcome.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh great! You haven't seen it. I'm happy I mentioned it, then. :)!!!
Apparently it isn't! LOL.
Well, some friends felt it didn't come close to the book. We'd all read his stuff. It's my only experience with feedback regarding the movie so it may be a bit slanted. I loved it, though.
I can see how people wouldn't. Sheltering Sky was one of those. It was awesome, to me, but understood why many didn't really like it.
Hideous Kinky was fun for me for some reason.
Was that Hideous Kinky? Oh, I liked that one though. Please don't tell me you didn't. I didn't love it but I did like it a lot. Slow and just nice to watch.
Did you like it? DON'T SAY NO, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I can think of anything else I think you'd love I'll let you know. If you've seen it, NP, but it's nice to know what you like now.
Wasn't it great?! That's at least a 4 out of 5 for me. Just loved it. Would have to see it again to rate it accurately. I don't know what's come over me lately. My brain has too much garbage in it. If only a few months pass, a movie grows faint.
Hi Raz,
That's about right, now that you bring it back to mind. When it came out it was a bit more unusual than it might seem today. Too many unusual plot twist, odd ending mainstream movies have come and gone since. Our ratings are pretty close, though. Happy to see that.
I think you're going to like Diamond Men. I suppose I don't have to remind you that it's a low budget, modest movie. But it's really nice and easy to watch. It has a certain dignity. I liked it much more than Lola. For ME it's a 4 out of 5.
The reason I didn't like Finding Neverland (though I did find the actor who played Peter to be sophisticated well beyond his years, Wow! He stole the show), I felt no energy whatsoever between Winslet and Depp, for one, which made his supposed interest in her hard to swallow. It is possible they were being amazingly sophisticated, attempting to point out how it might seem in reality if a man were really interested in the young boys but using the mother as a ploy. I don't think that's what they were doing but that's how it played, to me. And it's something I wasn't much in the mood to fathom. Winslet's cough was pathetic. I was chronically aware of her chronic fake cough. The ending was predictable and silly - beautiful, but goofy - again, to me. The movie was unpleasantly manipulative. Even Depp bothered me in his Peter Pan role. Well, I could keep going but won't. Will move on now - :)
ps - forgive if I don't proof the post, too long.
Addendum to a prior post:
Some of Jarmusch's stuff rots! Mostly newer stuff like Coffee and Cigarettes.
Had to say that just in case that's the only thing anyone's seen. Boy, was that about the worst film I have ever seen. But it doesn't negate his masterpieces.
Out.
Sorry to load your boat, junk. One more note because I do love this guy. Brian Cox is a special presence on screen for sure. He was great in both Minus Man and LIE. He's great in everything but those two, totally original style. You can tell he's a stage actor.
P.S. Maybe somebody has mentioned him. I NEVER use the search function. If you have or someone else has, forgive my blundering self, please.
You know what I want to say about that, btw, before I go back to work? I keep forgetting to ask why nobody mentions Jarmusch? If I'm going to talk Spotless mind regarding Winslet, How about Dead Man and Depp?
Jarmusch is a legend. Three of his films are on my hit parade.
Okay, back to work.
I seriously did NOT like that movie. But since we already dissed Winslet today let me say that Spotless Mind was AMAZING.
She's pretty good. You have to tell me about it.
As I recall, I was surprised by how natural she was on SNL, too. Post how it was.
The only theater I've attended lately is the opera and man, what a bore! I go often for some masochistic reason. I sing opera, did you know that? Guess I feel obligated.
Jeesh, I really have to get to work here. How did I let this much of the day get away from me?!
Too many exclamation points in this post. Must edit.
That's a great story. That's what sank Sinead O'Connor!
Hey, The Return of Martin Guerre. I forgot about that one. Saw it in an art cinema many moons ago. I swear, I think my mind is getting too full. I do not remember it. A MUST see again, for sure.
I explained in a post just now what kept me from LOVING The English Patient. I too thought it was wonderful, though.
Okay, I have to add one thing about The English Patient before I forget. I would have loved that movie if not for Binoche. God, did she irritate the pis_ out of me in that movie. This wench stuff wears so thin. I've loved her in stuff but she RUINED English Patient for me.
I also didn't like Lovers on the Bridge as much as some of my friends. I was expecting too much and found it contrived and over the top in a way that didn't work. Basquiat is an over the top and gritty film that DID work, IMO. Claire Forlani - quite easy on the eyes.
I know, he loves these films. Strange. I liked Remains for the historic value and it was pretty good. Husband likes Emma a lot. I think she was good in a few things, like Wit - which wasn't exactly joyous but it was a tough role. Overall, however, another overrated actress. She irritates me, actually.
P.S. Sign me up for the club!
I don't get what everybody loved about it. Was it purely because it was such an expensive and elaborate production? The build up? I just don't get it. It lacked the subtleties of romantic, period films like The English Patient, which wasn't great but quite good. I was immediately partial to that film when I heard Marta Sebestyen playing in the background early on.
Anyway, I hated The Titanic before I saw it but found it tolerable upon viewing.
Me three! Me three! Over here waving from the back of the room.
My husband loved it, thought it was existential? That's one of the things I love about him, he has these idiosyncratic perceptions. For me, it was watchable but that's about it.
He also LOVED Remains of the Day, which was pretty damned good but for him, it's holy.
You mean that story we were dissecting when I was on Codeine after I hadn't slept for a year - lol.
Your logical analysis and my aimless ruminating? Oy vey.
YES, I've regrettably heard of it, THANKS TO LOW!
Do you think I'll be able to rant like you when I grow up? Please?!!!!!!!! LOL.
Really, really beautiful and perceptive review. I will now (HUMBLY) contract into one-liners for awhile.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!! I WANT MORE OF THESE!
Thank you soooooooooooo much, Raz.
TX, lobo. I return the compliment.
I believe the only reason I didn't give it 5 out of 5 is, it wasn't a feel good movie like The Incredibles and I was in "I need feel good" mode. Timing is everything. It was a 5er for sure, had I seen it on another day in a different mood.
Have The Battle of Algiers in the computer right now (DVD player broke down) waiting for a free moment. It's an oldy. Will let you know what I think, if you haven't seen it.
See you lobo....... have a great day.
City of God: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/
Saw this one a few months ago and just came across it again. Brilliant film. 4.5 out of 5 pickles. Too tired to write too much but I recommend it HIGHLY. Not even sure why I'm not giving it 5. Just don't feel like it, I guess.
Oh yeah, P.S. Walken is the funniest host ever on SNL: The Continental, The Cowbell, this one where he asks if a Milky Way can be counted as someone living in the apartment... he's too good.
Baldwin is amazingly hilarious too - surprisingly talented comedian. But this Seinfeld one where he plays Elijah come to a seder... My husband hated Seinfeld til he saw that, then he loved him. It was brilliant.
I think I just heard a dog get killed by a raccoon in the neighbor's yard. My husband and I tried to get there in time to break it up, the dog was going ballistic and the raccoon was growling and spitting, but believe we were too late. Stupid dog wouldn't let up and suddenly... silence. I called the dog's name over the high fence (he must have cornered it) but ... nada. Then we ran away, suddenly imagining this crazed raccoon from the dumb White Castle movie flying over the fence to attack us. Can't get in the yard, either.
On a lighter (ha) note, I have to try the pork lard tactic. What are the three main food groups? Fat, sugar and lard, right?
:( It just arrived from Netflix today. I had a feeling it wasn't going to be worth the time. Previews were empty / devoid of energy - impulsively added it to my queue while surfing. Now I feel like putting it back in the envelope. I hate wasting my time on sucky movies, moreso serious sucky movies than goofy sucky ones. Saw a TERRIBLE movie the other night about searching for a White Castle. It sucked, yet, because it was dumb, it had redeeming moments.
Am reading a wonderful book: Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin. One of the most beautifully written, lush, vivid, imaginative, interesting and intricately woven stories I've ever read. It's ten years old, though. I think we ought to have books up there in the board description.
I just saw that Bale was the young guy in Empire of the Sun! OMG. I don't remember a THING about that movie other than I saw it. Now I have to see it again. Though, my recollection is of a quasi-artsy, elaborate production typical of the era. Maybe I just didn't appreciate it at the time.
I'm going to put that in my queue. TX for recommending it.
I have this new keyboard and am hitting something that quits my browser all the time, AFTER I've typed a post but not yet sent.
Anyway, wrote I have to see Manchurian again. Might see the new one this time. Barely remember the original. Have you seen The Conversation with Gene Hackman? I'm sure you have. It's a classic. He's such a pro.
Am incredibly interested in The Chronicles of Narnia. Read those when I was 6 or 7 and they had a huge effect on me.
This is what came to mind when I read The Island on your list:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056049/ It was called The Island here, as I recall.
Can't find it anywhere. It was stunning but I barely remember it. Saw it as a teenage art student. Would love to see it again.
Here's what a person who commented wrote about it and it seems to fit my recollection and experience:
"If you have ever wondered what a film would be like that exemplifies how the tools of the craft can be used to do powerfully what no other art can do, this film answers the question. It is among the most carefully wrought, least encumbered yet profound movies ever made. The fact that it has long been unavailable in America and Europe in any accessible format reflects very sadly upon us all."
P.S. You know what was an amazing book but a TERRIBLE movie? The Beach. Excuse the non-sequitur. It was sort of a stream of consciousness connection there with The Island.
In the queue it goes. How did I miss that one?
TX!!!! And now, the weeds are calling :(
Oh hey! He was in Lost in Translation, that's right. That just might be a chick flick kind of thing but I totally and completely loved that movie. That is a movie that can divide people for sure. I felt like I was in Japan - in the theater. And as I've said, I really like Johansson. Murray does great serious stuff. Man, did I get sucked into that film. Ribisi was perfect.
Should get back out in the yard. My break is over.
Curious to see what you think of Georgia. It's got a touch of the Leaving Las Vegas mood going on.
Nobody seems to respond to American History X. Hmmm. I thought it was amazing. Did nobody see it or did everybody see it, it's a given, you've all beat it to death already, I missed the boat and am being a dork?
Yeah, Ribisi was everywhere. I'm going to look him up on IMDB and see what's with that.
Thought it was cool how they gave characteristics of the voices to the characters. Holly Hunter was terrific and I must admit, Elastigirl was HOT. Even when she got older, loved the way they gave her a nice arse. Mr. Incredible was a friggin adorable mench. I want one!
I read a wonderful book awhile back called The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Something about Elastigirl reminds me of how they physically describe the main female character in that book. GREAT BOOK!!
TX. Okay, I won't! :)
Can't wait to see Nemo. I keep pushing it down in my queue - am delaying gratification because I KNOW I'm going to LOVE it.
Shrek 1 and 2 both get 5 out of 5 for me! I LOVED THOSE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Must admit that 2 was a bit better but I refuse to lower the rating on 1 after seeing 2. Saw lots of Princess Bride in both of them.
Could not get my husband to watch them and it pissed me off - royally. For the life of me I cannot understand what his deep seeded prejudice is - that it's so bad he will physically leave the room if I put on an animation. He gets this superior attitude like I've somehow compromised myself or my judgement is slipping. It's the most frustrating, infuriating thing you can imagine. I'm going to tie him to a chair and put toothpicks in his eyes one of these days.
This may get me kicked off the board but I saw The Incredibles last week and I give it 5 out of 5 pickles. I can't think of one thing I didn't like about that movie. I'm not a fan of anime but some other new animation out there is pretty cool - like The Incredibles. It was totally absorbing from start to finish. I hesitate to press submit! Not sure why I feel funny giving an animation 5 pickles but I think it was genius.
Happy to hear you feel that way. You're the first person I've met who's seen it let alone loved it as much. Saw Election but for some reason it's not fresh in my mind. Timing is everything. Maybe I was having an off night.
Have you seen Georiga with Jennifer Jason Leigh? It doesn't have the same kind of energy as Freeway at all but it's a very cool movie that deserves higher praise than it got - like Freeway. One of those gems.
Have you seen Boiler Room? Wouldn't call it a great movie but it was a really good movie. Giovanni Ribisi's acting style works for me.
