That's a makeable deal. No need for the Cubs to hang on to either of those guys. Cubs are looking more 20th century with each season since they won it all: lost, visionless and just happy to be playing in one of the best parks in MLB.
In the meantime, Mets need to show up against the likes of Houston. These are the teams that need to fear you come October. Much as I can't stand the cheaters, gotta love Dusty....and the fact that they're still running away with the division after losing correra, springer, cole just to name a few.
Yup, Robertson has looked sharp this season, but let's see how that plays out because he's a dude who has banked a lot of money in his career not performing, mostly due to injury, but I'd want to see a bit more before giving up much for him.
I think your catcher situation doesn't require Contreras. The line up is doing just fine without him, and McCann will be back. And even though he's been a letdown, so was Lindor, but you still have to pencil him in at #3 every day. I'd just worry about upsetting the chemistry in the battery if you commit to Contreras. You only have to look at the Bronx to see that with a potent line up, catcher is a position much more important for it's chemistry. I think it was the a couple nights ago when some commentator threw out the tidbit that no team that dealt for a catcher at the deadline has won the WS.
The Astros are really, really good this year. Maybe Buck knew this game was over before Shreve came in!
You want relief? Problem with you needing bullpen arms is that most teams with better pens than the Mets are buyers at the deadline.
Maybe you can get Ian Kennedy for Dom, lol. Because barring injury or roster padding in August, Dom might be done in NY. He definitely deserves a shot where he can play every day and that ain't NY.
Gallo? Joey Gallo??!! I guess there's the great Yankee tradition of guys like Cliff Johnson and Steve Balboni that must be upheld and continued in the Bronx.
Bassitt and Walker are having exceptional regular seasons supported by an outstanding line up. I'm not underestimating them at all when I put them in the 2nd tier or lower of MLB starters. I'd even say that the Astros playoff rotation last year was better than Bassitt and Walker and we saw what happened there.
When was the last time a team went deep in the post season without a tier 1 ace? Or an Eovaldi who rose to the occasion? To me it's pretty basic: Come game 6, would you rather face your Walker or Walker Buehler, (assuming he's healthy)?
Crew win a classic Milwaukee game over the Cards, 2-0. Burnes for 7, Williams for 1 and Hader in to slam the door.
The Cards have a decent line up, proving again that great pitching will beat great hitting most times.
Bassitt and Walker are guys I'm sure the Dodgers and Braves would love to face in October. And you better lay in a big bottle of Rolaids for when Diaz trots with a 1 run lead to protect in an elimination game.
Back to the shift: OBP is huge. The pressure that having baserunners puts on the opposing team's pitcher and defence doesn't show up in the stats, but it's crucial, especially late in the game. Sure, maybe you don't ask Alonso to chip a ball the other way, but rosters are choked with all or nothing Gallo clones who can barely pull the ball anyway. IMO what makes the Mets so much better this year is the number of quality ABs you're getting up and down the line up. The pressure is constant and sooner or later, it'll find a way to put up runs.
Wish the Crew had some better OBP bats. I'd gladly trade Adames' 13 HRs and .206 batting average for a guy who can move runners, make contact and show some plate discipline.
Is it me or are hitters finally starting to beat the shift this season. Maybe it's just just the players who are desperate to add some points to their BA....Yelich, Bellinger...these guys are just touching the ball through the open infield and getting on base. Long overdue. I'm a big believer in not regulating defence with MLB imposed rules. Put 7 guys wherever you want. If the batters are too stubborn or fossilised to work it out, so be it.
Watching the Braves/Giants game. Fried looks like Cy material. You're definitely going to need Max and Degrom to beat teams of the Braves calibre.
Haha! Didn't they find Fisky slumped over the wheel of his pick up truck in a cornfield, drooling bourbon?
The only thing that could help the Yanks is for the playoffs to start 2 weeks ago.
Last year of 5 for Cain in 2022. Years 1 and 2 were great but he sure slid after that. It was all about D and obp with Cain, both of which have been awful in 2023 so I'm not sorry to see him go. Maybe McCutchen will be next.
The 2020 COVID craziness proved the disconnect between the market and the economy. No V shape recovery in the economy, but the market? Different story.
Bad call. Looked a tad over excited to me. Great series all up, but 1-2 isn't going to cut it. Kudos to the Mets bullpen.
Yup, we have a real problem getting to the 8th. Boxberger used to be a reliable 3 outs, but against a quality line-up, he's no sure thing. The rest of the bullpen is the same.
Brewers need a W every time Burnes starts.
Thanks to Buck for trotting out Reed. Like to see more of him tomorrow.
You're right that it's much too early to write the crew off, but they're not losing 1 run games like the Halos did in their 14 game losing streak. Milwaukee is getting behind early and has no comeback capacity in their line up. They've been a team that wins 4-2 games, but now the other team tees off early.
Hope they don't fire Counsel. Local boy who has deep roots in the area.
Pitching was the Brewers calling card but injuries have crushed the rotation. Fastball Freddy is down, Woodruff is down, Houser and Lauer have been shaky. Last year all these arms were healthy and reliable. Now it's Burnes, Williams and Hader.
The line up really does suck. I'd much rather they cut Cain loose and drop Adames to the 7 spot. He's been awful. K after K and a Galloesque average without the fantasy power.
How pathetic is the Brewers line up? Mets played well but the crew have really slid. They're now a team other teams want to see on their schedule. No pop. No fear in the minds of their opponents.
I will say Trout is a true baseball guy in the old school sense. Lives and breathes it. Must be nice to have found your calling...and make half a billion in the process!
...there's also only 3 teams that have scored more than 300 runs---and we're one of them---no flats on those tires----so far
Front right side wall failure: Hicks
Front left slow leak: Donaldson
Rear right slow leak: Marwin
Rear left blow out, rubber strewn along the highway: Gallo
You have Judge and then Stanton and then the others. Easy to crow while judge and stanton are healthy.
The Yanks pitching has indeed been superb. I especially like seeing Severino make it back after such a struggle. I can't believe the Sanchez factor has that big a role in it. Last I looked the Twins were leading their division without Berrios.
Don't know about that. Someone would have taken on Sanchez for much less than what it's costing the Yanks to pay Donaldson. Catcher is a weak link in the majority of MLB lineups.
Don't get me wrong, I n think the Yanks needed to move on from Gary, but this deal had much more to do with CASHman's historical preferences than the need to move Sanchez.
Trout's mic'ed up for the MLB game. I thought he was from Jersey. What's up with the southern accent? Gotta say, it's a good thing he can hit the curve ball because based on his range of insights and interests, he could easily be flipping burgers. Love his aspiration for his son: golf.
"so far" being the key phrase here. This is some blind squirrel action IMO: sign enough balding tires and one of them is bound grab a bit of road.
Just saying a defending WS winner that adds a top 5 MLB talent to it's roster is a force to be reckoned with. That's not to downplay what the Mets have achieved this season. They certainly have a quality roster. To compete in the post season they'll need their starting pitching healthy; they'll also need the bullpen clicking. Both of these things can happen, but if they don't, the Mets will struggle to compete with the cream of the NL.
As for the schedule, winning teams get on rolls and nobody, good or bad, wants to face them. That's the Braves now. The Phils have been cruising too, but they had 4 in Milwaukee so sadly, that doesn't prove much.
Don't look now but the Braves are 5.5 out and playing amazing baseball. I almost forgot how good Acuna was during his injury. The pitching is coming around and the Mets are definitely gonna have some questions to answer before this division is decided.
Bit late for that, lol. Don't know what the Yanks and the CASHman negotiating team were thinking, but whatever it was, it's going to cost them some serious cheese.
Ha! Maybe they should shift everyone to the bench except for the pitcher and catcher.
No argument here. With the pitching they've had over the past few years, a rental bat or 2 would have made all the difference. Now that the pitching is hurt or struggling, there's nothing to carry them. This line up is worse than watching the Reds. If there's a worse line-up in MLB, I haven't seen it.
Crew dropping 7 in a row tonight but will end up .5 out of first even with a Cards win. Worse, the team has become virtually unwatchable. Boring, anaemic offence with no promise of coming back when down a few runs. No punch outside of Tellez. Time to drop Yelich to the 8 spot until he earns it.
If you torch Cole for 7 earned, that's a game you gotta win. Twins should be feeling pretty 2nd tier about now.
Franco, Acuna, Soto, Tatis.....these dudes and others were young and too good to keep down on the farm. It's rare to see a 20 year old playing every day on a major league roster, which does explain why it's also rare to see a 3000 hit player.
I think hitters will join the 3000 hit and 500 HR clubs at a rate much more similar to the past generations than pitchers. For pitchers, the 300 win milestone is becoming less achievable for a number of reasons, including quick manger hooks, harder throwing and better bullpens. Kershaw is a lock first round HOFer even if he doesn't throw another pitch and he has fewer than 200 wins. Same with Scherzer. Verlander won't make it to 300 wins either, but he'll be in Cooperstown. Maybe 200 is the new 300?
Both Ohtani and Trout are too young for CASHman. He definitely has a proven preference for over -the- hill, over paid veterans who stymie the development of younger players coming up through the farm system and need big league innings.
CRXT .40
Waiting on orphan drug status in June.
Inevitable he'd get tagged. Brought back a lot of bad Freeman memories, lol.
Crew needs a win. Don't want to see 4 straight losses turn into an Angels streak!
Speaking of Alonso, did you check out his slide into home yesterday.
Brewers have had excellent luck avoiding the injury bug.....until this season. No depth in the bullpen or bench and all of the sudden they look more and more average. Their window was the past 2-3 years. Hopefully they can prolong it a couple more but without some help, it's getting harder and harder. St Louis has a decent line-up.
Slow down, cowboy. I know this is a Yankees board by default, but this current yanks squad team hasn't won squink that I can see. Let's not confuse a hot run with a great team.
Angels are now a .500 team. 2 weeks ago they were better than 10 over and a lock for Oct ball. Even if the yankees don't stumble this season, which means Judge doesn't get hurt, making the playoffs and not advancing to at least the WS is a lost year.
Rest assured he'll never scare you in October. Buck won't let that happen.
Mets are a loose, fun bunch to watch these days. Hard to believe they're playing so well with their 2 prime pitchers out.
Girardi having a silent cornary in the dugout. Dribbler to first in the 10th and Familia forgets to cover the bag. Finally chugs over late, drops the throw and watches the runner score from 2nd.
I've seen better defence in Pony league ball.
If I'm Buck Plummer's in the line up tonight. Sweet swing, hot bat.... that's gotta play.
